The Matrix: Resurrections Movie Review

  • The 4th and latest installment in The Matrix franchise released recently in 2021. The end product wound up being so divisive, even during the production stage not everyone came back for this one. I can't say for certain if they all weren't on board or not, but I can say that Lilly saw The Matrix as the past and felt no reason to return, leaving only Lana of the Wachowskis coming back for this installment.
Neo, played by Keanu Reeves is back! Kind of a surprise after Matrix 3, but so is Trinity, played by Carrie-Anne Moss!! Again, even more of a surprise. Also, so is Morpheous and Smith, except they're the same person except they aren't the same person except they aren't even played by the same person but there's footage where they are... yeah, we haven't even started talking about the plot yet.
Is that necessary, though? Will it help you make the choice of wanting to watch this review? Or is the truth that the choice has already been made for you..?

feels like Neo and Trinity's arc in this film was effectively the Wachowski's "we don't wanna do this anymore, but at least one of us would rather have some control over the ship instead of letting WB do whatever they want" i.e. "we have a choice, but people aren't gonna like it, that doesn't matter cause it's our choice to make"
and if shows, the film is flat in the studio mandated reboot/nostalgia grabs, but interesting in the parts where the actual story of the struggle between the studio and Wachowski's was told.
was it a good film? idk, as a Matrix film, probably not, as author commentary on what the studio system can do to a creation when trying to franchise it? actually yes.

One thing that really bothers me about this movie is how soulless and sanitized the cinematography and production design looked (and there's no way it was intentionally
"making a statement on the artifice of the Hollywood machine", it just looked like a generic Netflix original). Man, I miss when movies were shot on film and textured and weathered with great designs, props, and visual world-building. Denis Villeneuve's Dune did this right.
Also, the action choreography was so lifeless. More than anything The Matrix: Resurrections fundamentally failed as a cinematic experience. It just felt so clean and clinical. Other than that, I don't have any problems with its story structure (I didn't love it, but it was fine), it just didn't really feel like a movie to me.

Methinks Wachowski intentionally made this bad in order to prevent the studio from demanding even more of them be made.
Plus take jabs at the studios in the dialogue along the way.

I have a feeling this movie might have been made for a different reason other than to simply make another Matrix film. But that would be too crazy of a conversation to get into for a movie review.
Also, I know October is a ways off yet, but I think Trick r Treat would be a fun one to review then. Just a thought.

The last attempt to free humanity (Jesus) failed but left the controlsystem (the babylonian sun worshipping cult) with a now-built-in anomaly. The next attempt (soon) will be succesful and permanent.
The new Matrix movie depicts our current time where people think that messages in entertainment are just fantasy.
They are not. They are fading memories of what has happend and glimpses of what's to come.

I used to have hair that long. What I used was Pert 1in2 shampoo and conditioner, nothing fancy. The trick to keeping it silky is spending two minutes in the repeat phase under cold water.
Really, two minutes spent cleaning every crack and crevice, 1 minute spent soaking and shampooing the hair, then two minutes spent repeating that in significantly colder water.
(Heat is the death of good hair)

Well, I did like how you constructed your reason for liking this movie. To me, it does come off as a genuine opinion, instead of just following the beat of what others have said. Though I still dislike this movie for being underwhelming and hard to watch, especially when the voice in the back of my mind is yelling "I've seen this before, can I see something new, please?!" or "Wow, this was completely pointless...I'm want to watch Dune 2021" I hate this film for a more philosophical reason, it's perpetuating the inane reason to keep reusing Sagas who already told their stories with a conclusion. It's even worse, when the original actors don't reprise their roles, the characters have poorly developed, and overall it just feels like this installment was running on steam, and even worse with no objective reason to resume a completed story.
I do agree the Matrix sequels are poorly thought out, but that's because there was no objective reason to continue or had anything deep to say while continuing the worldbuilding. Though, I will say that Lana Wachowski violated the unspoken rule of franchise building, do not make more than three films. Only do one movie plus two sequels, because unless you constructed well thought out storyline, you'll burn yourself out of your creative momentum. Thus your films' successes will start to fail, especially when the elements you put in, do not serve the narrative you're trying to established.
