It's quite literally a remake of "High Noon" with Connery in the Gary Cooper role. And I think it's excellently done and entertaining as hell. The great Frances Sternhagen, who passed away recently, is awesome as the doctor.
Yep, one of the main difference is that instead of outlaws from the Marshall's past coming after him it's hitmen called in by the Mayor for threatening his gravy train.
It may not be considered Connery's best performance, but the scene of him talking on the communicator with his kid while trying not to have a breakdown is my favorite bit of acting from him.

I honestly love Outland. Watch it everytime i Marathon the Alien series (as in Alien 1 to 3) right between Alien and Aliens. Something like Outland was really needed. Interesting enough, the scifi and western genre merge pretty well when you set the story and characters at the fringes of the space faring civilization.
That's cause the Western genre isn't about the location or time period like most people think, it's about living on the frontier and being self reliant, where/when that frontier happens to be isn't relevant. You'd still classify something like The Last of the Mohicans or Quigley Down Under as a western even though neither takes place in the west or Firefly and Outland even though they take place in the future.

"Looks like Alien" - True, so much so that in my head-canon Alien and Outland (as well as Bladerunner) take place in the same universe. The technology in all three movies seems to be quite compatible, especially in Alien and Outland. Alien's Androids and Bladerunner's Replicants also seem at least a little bit related. So perhaps Replicants are the product of a competitor of Weyland who choose to take a more "biological" route in creating artificial humans. And in Bladerunner they show adverts for moving into outer space colonies and starting a new life - which sounds just like what the people in Aliens or Covenant did... Also tonally all three movies fit quite well together, all three painting the picture of a society in which companies hold even more power than they already do today and who show a common disregard for the lives of "just people".
Saturn 3 has a similar look and feel so it might also be in the same universe. Kurt Russell's character from Soldier saw action at Tannhauser Gate so it's definitely part of Blade Runner universe. Obviously, Predator is in the Alien universe but Blade Runner and Total Recall are also in the Alien universe with the advertised opportunities of the off world colonies. There's more! Your skin is really good at holding you together and there's not that much difference between one atmosphere and no atmosphere. There's nothing to conduct heat away, no gravity for convection, and you're not a good radiator so you'll stay warm for a while. Longer if you're in the light but then you'd get a hell of a sunburn. The big danger is wind shear and airborne debris if there's a lot of air exiting the ship with you. Suffocation followed by freezing and then desiccation. But like falling into a frozen lake, you're not dead until you're warm and dead.
I loved this movie but then I'm a big Connery fan. I first saw it as a kid and while I knew who he was I had a hard time following the movie, Saw it again some years later and was just taken by it. Great Job Decker man as always
Outland has been a Sean Connery favorite of mine since the mid-80's when I first saw it and has so remained until this day. As you said Decker, they just don't make 'em like this anymore.
Sean Connery elevated any movie he was in. I really liked this movie and I liked that they used 'normal' guns, even in the far future hand held lazer guns are just fantasy .
Whoa whoa whoa....we don't know what happens to someone in Io's atmosphere when their space suit is compromised. Oh and Io is not a dead arid rock, in fact because of the gravitational pull of Jupiter and Europa is surface is molten sulfur. With literal lakes of liquid sulfur and ice bergs of partial solid/solidified sulfur on them. Uh now that I think about it, I am not sure if any where on Io is cool enough for this mine to exist.
oh I believe far more than Aliens. Alien & Outland are definitely brother & sister films. the Metroid/Kid Icarus of sci-fi films, which is a pretty good comparison if you ask me.
Oohhh man! Jim Steranko did the comic in the pages of heavy metal in 1983? Maybe before but wow his perspective is spot on in my head.💯 This movie IS highly underrated.
17:09 I think he means that it costs them all the labor, not that the drugs themselves cost a lot. What's cool to me about this movie in retrospect is that you can play ALIEN ISOLATIOn and really get a feel for how the team pulled in elements of Outland, both in design and in some of the other organizations, IE: The Colonial Marshalls. I love that.
"I'm unpleasant, not stupid" is a great line.

The summer of wrong turn 😂🎉😢😅😊
Excellent film. So sorry Frances Sternhagen passed recently.
I firmly believe that ALIEN and OUTLAND are intended to be in the same universe.
oh I believe far more than Aliens. Alien & Outland are definitely brother & sister films. the Metroid/Kid Icarus of sci-fi films, which is a pretty good comparison if you ask me.
Even in the Alien RPG corebook the authors made a lot of references to "Outland"
No.
The only Outland i know, is from the old Burning Crusade xpac, in World of Warcraft.
I had forgotten all about this movie you’re right about the climax but it’s a lot better than the other space movies that are out there
Man I loved this movie and still do.
Oohhh man! Jim Steranko did the comic in the pages of heavy metal in 1983? Maybe before but wow his perspective is spot on in my head.💯 This movie IS highly underrated.
Love Outland !! Great review !
What is this, I see no "Bill the Cat" nor "Opus?"
Hey one of your videos finnaly poped up in my feed 😊😊
How many movies did Connery pass on that became smash hits that depressed him into retirement basically?
I am going to have to find this and watch it was my dad and brother. Both will appreciate it
The anti choke collar was nuts 🥜
