RoboCop 3 was the last of the mainline RoboCop movies, up until the recent RoboCop remake. That might be because of the fact that even the filmmakers didn't quite know what direction to go with the story at this point. Or, the PG-13 rating. Or... well, I guess like always it's simply a combination of many factors.

One thing I DO like about this movie is that the general populace doesn't have goldfish memory like they do in most other series that try the "hero is now evil" thing.
When the news goes, "Robocop is now evil!" pretty much everyone's response is, "Do you think we're stupid?"

I liked the core idea of the story, uprooting people from their homes and the part where the cops join the fight. If only the execution was better and samurai bots weren't wasted, Rip Torn's over the top energy was toned down (should have made Johnson the CEO), and maybe play up Bill Dauterive double crossing the gang.

If you want to see this story better executed, you should read "Robocop: The Last Stand" by Frank Miller which was actually the original script re-adapted into a comic book. The story was much more darker. The Rehab-Team were originally in Miller's Robocop 2 script, and had a stronger presence in that story than Miller's Robocop 3 script. But the hand gun was also a chain gun rather than an all-in-one machine gun, flamethrower, rocket launcher. The jetpack was also in Miller's script as well and there are many characters that had their roles switched around in the movie. Dr. Lazarus is Lacesse in the comic, and is more like the child, Nikko from the movie, but wasn't a 12-year-old girl but was much older and a badass in a leather jacket and is more of a emotional wreck. She would've had an emotional connection with Alex Murphy, is extremely intelligent and is the one assisting and repairing him throughout and I believed she reprogrammed herself as a hologram. Also, during the finale where the cops are at war with the Rehab-Team, they bring in RoboCain as their weapon along with Ed-209 side-by-side.

Pretty much, from what I can gather. It's too bad, as he directed two really creative, quality movies prior to this. "The Monster Squad" and "Night of the Creeps" are bona fide cult classics, these days.
Dude worked on House, monster squad, night of the creeps, and a tales from the crypt episode. This movie just seems random.
I think they actually did a decent job of making the new actor look like Peter Weller. Too bad he didn’t have nearly as good a voice.
Best line in this movie: It's time to show'm how real cops kickass (Cocks Shotgun). Seriously, one of my favorite movie lines.

Man, I have all the nostalgia for RoboCop 3. This used to be my favourite film as a kid, I just remember loving seeing RoboCop drive off the car park and shooting the roof off. This film will always have a special place in my heart.
A bit o trivia for you. The Robocop suit in this movie is the same one that was designed for Peter Weller for the first two movies, they didn't make a new suit for the new actor for budget reasons, it was not designed for anyone else to wear except Weller and it caused Robert John Burke so much pain to movie in the suit that the "cool martial arts scenes" planned for Robocop 3 couldn't be filmed.
This is also the reason why Robocop wasn't in much of his own movie.
I don't mind the plot to this film. Re-watched it recently and actually kind of enjoyed it (this was right after watching 1 and 2 again). I do feel the lack of a "R" rating hurt it overall though. The action scenes came off very flat as a result.
Robert John Burke was in excruciating pain from just moving around in the suit and it's the reason why Robocop wasn't in much of his own movie and the action scenes were flat. The suit in the movie was specifically designed for Peter Weller to wear.
This is what you get when you turn a R rated franchise into a PG-13 movie family friendly movie.....utter shit.

+Decker Shado One small error. The four 90-minute episodes were a mini-series that was closer to the movies. The actual TV show had one season and 22 episodes. In fact, one of the episodes had a They Live feel and featured the late Roddy Piper.

They ruined this by making it PG, They had an awesome android that couldve been like a japanese Terminator, but instead we got cookie japanese robots that pulled weird faces. This thing shouldve been like a bad ass ninja, fast nimble, slick, shuriken throwing, smoke bomb hiding, showing up and going through the resistance like they were nothing.
As for the Aliens Reference, it couldve been made so much better if the japanese android tried to kill the lil girl, and then Bertha showed up with sum kind of machine gun/rocket launcher/flamethrower and was like get away from her you bastard-a nod to Aliens 3 ellen ripley, and so she couldve died defending the lil girl allowing her to get away. OR couldve bought enough time for Robocop to come in and save the day.
and then some better coreography. It shouldve been like Terminator 2, Robocop tries shooting him with his standard side arm, knocks him down, robocop stands over him to scan his face to try and identify him to find out who sent him, u know like a cop would, then all of a sudden the Android stands up or attacks robo either grabbing him or kicking him away, n thn does sum kind of flip onto his feet. hav robo grab him, do a bit of tussel back n forth like in terminator where they throw each other against walls try to overpower 1 n other.

Robocop is knocked down again Bertha tries to save and help robo by shooting a shotgun. She unloads all rounds, with lil to no effect on the android...it goes to end the nuisance human once and for all, but then robo goes to attack him with a metal pipe/pole, but the android here's him, and with his swift reflexes reaches back and grabs it, then kicks him, disarming robocop and then begins pummeling robo with the pole. you know...like this...

then he gets his had chopped off, as this is an important trope for most heroes as was seen in star wars and then he gets knocked down, robocop gets up and stumbles, struggling to stay up, he gets knocked down once again, he begins to crawl

This should have been like the T-800 meets the T1000, where the Older model is outclassed in nearly every way, and robo gets ruffed up quite a bit, but then clutches a win
AND YES They shouldve took the ED 209 with, get him to go into the back of the Van and sit like a good lil doggy.
Imagine ED 209 Fighting the bad guys in the scene where the OCP guys raid, He could shoot off the OCP but then the enemies fire power gets too much, and they overwhelm him, and the lil girl is like thanks robot. like the Lost in Space robot that holds back the spider swarm sacrificing itself.

Perhaps he has a face off with the Android, but the Android is too fast for him, and gets to a week spot like under his legs/ behind him or gets on top of him like in robocop 2 or like the robocop remake, and opens him up and shuts him down/ destroys his processor
OR Maybe the lil girl and Dr Lazarus return later on when the coast is clear to try and find Bertha ad Robo, but they find Bertha dead, and Murphy is gone. But they do find some hope the find the shutdown damaged ED 209 and repair ED 209 shows up at the end when the cops are overrun, and puts up a good fight but in the end the ED 209 gets blown up by a grenade launcher or better yet a 6.1 Barrett M82 (as the "Cobra Assault Cannon") , as a call back to the nostalgia of the original classic, plus its OCP, why couldny they get some more Assult Cannons?
Final thing is the replacement of the Old Man, with Rip Torne, Torne is good, but hes too comical, need someone that is more serious, like the The "Old Man".

I think the BIGGEST issue for this film was probably the budget, as a LOT of what im talk8ng about would probably EXCEED what they had to work with but YEAH...it wouldve DEFFO improved and saved RoboCop 3☺️

They had a LA SHOW??? I don't remember that at all! I vaguely remember the 80's animated series but not a live action.
@@ShojoBakunyuI think they even had TWO in different moments of the 1990s, at least one of them was Canadian, and one was more Robocop cartoons or Robocop 3 PG-13 style, the second was more like the first two films as much as TV stuff allowed.

It's nowheres near the worst movie I've ever seen, though...and I think that people might be a little kinder towards this movie. However:It was, indeed, a flop at the Box Office, so.... there's that.
In my opinion, though... it's still kind of fun to watch, so I'll personally give it a 2.5 out of 5.
How the hell would the rebels "take" ED-209? It wouldn't fit into the van and they couldn't disassemble it. Just have the girl walk it to their hideout? Until the first OCP goon with a Cobra gun, sure.

"visiting" someone at their house, telling them bitches to leave, shooting the homeowner in the kneecaps multiple times to insert a CD in the homeowners home cinema system that reveals a deadly message from his college, to only leave a timed grenade on the the table is the fuckest-uppest-sadisdic move in all of movie history tbh.

The idea behind the film was interesting, the "old man" replaced by a corporate cook sucker, the japanese technological industry (Kanemitsu Corporation) creating the first fully human-ish AI in mass production. The battle for "Motor City" with the civilian population against the Rehavs and Street Gangs, all of this while the Police Department is trapped in between of two major wars.
But then... the Nation of the PG-13's attacked... and not even the Avatar could have saved us...

It's probably referencing a manga/anime from the 60s called "8 man" which was a story much like Robocop where a murdered detective is brought back to life as a robot to fight crime/revenge. But in this case, he recharges by smoking. I know that sounds silly, but that is literally how he powers up... :p

McDaggett, for me, is the diamond in the rough. He was actually a damn good villain who legitimately pissed me off for all the right reasons. And don’t get me wrong, Boddicker, Cain, and Dick Jones were also entertaining villains but none of them pissed me off as much as McDaggett did.

In the second film Robocop took a direct hit from a 20mm cannon, fell from a building, got caught in a natural gas explosion, and got tossed around by the big villain robot, and was perfectly fine. In this movie he gets taken down by a grenade launcher. What happened to the nearly unstoppable, tank on two legs Robocop from the first two film?
Not to mention it took only two or three out of shape middle aged men to carry him.

If you ask me, 2 and 3 felt like they're nothing but fanfics; just written by two entirely different writers. The Robocop franchise is one of the very few times I'm with the "The first one's great, but the sequels suck!" group.
I 100% agree. Even if the second one had potential and some good ideas, there was no need for sequels, just like The Matrix.
I think the fall of this franchise can be summed up in two letters one number. PG13. The first two movies were R. It’s like having a PG version of the terminator.

While I prefer R rated Terminator, the first 3 arent really gory, and have some cursing in them, if they were released today, they most likely would be PG13. Robocop should never have been rated PG13

Fun fact. The director of Robocop 3, Fred Dekker, is also the writer of The Predator. Shane Black also makes a cameo as one of the police officers in Robocop 3.
I've never liked this one I think I've watched it 3 or 4 times where the first two I've seen more times than I want to count. Another great review Decker thank you as always man.

This movie has the feel of a made for TV movie. The tone of the original is completely gone. The second didn't really have the intelligent satire. But it retained the tone with the ridiculous levels of violence.
Damn it decker, it's 2:08am here. Ah what the heck I'm on vacation. Time to watch.
I actually like this one more than 2. Police chief was inspiring to me as a kid and when Robocop jetpacks over the battle to the theme music I rewound it over and over. Even as a kid though I noticed the same critics you listed.
Only Decker can cheer me up after Ex problems.

Because of Orion going bust, I played the Amiga/PC game way before we got the chance to see the film. I think even the makers of the game had only the loose plot and a few stills. As such it is a really atmospheric and quite intense FPS/Driving//Beat-em-up/Flight sim. Maybe the first FPS I can remember ever seeing.
I do hope you got your fiancee that ice cream. That does sound good. 😉😂 And saw in the credits you mentioned the RoboCop cartoon, was also a live action series too. Dad had a few episodes of that on video tape. And let me close in saying, at least he didn't picture that kid too after his ex wife, that would have gone on a whole new level of creepy. Anyways, thank you, Decker. Loved these reviews.

this is what it took to take this movie down to the sewer.
there were some good elements to this movie, but it had no chance against such bad decisions.

Really? Now I know why I couldn't even get past the first 20 minutes (I'm talking about The Predator 2018), and I hadn't seen the original yet. I only watched RC3 because it's freaking Robocop, but I wanted to stop watching within the first ten minutes. Yikes.

I know it's got problems; But the town partnering up with the police that have honor and stand down when Omni Consumer Products have forced them to evict innocent people. I have a guilty pleasure with this film.
I only remembered bits from this movie, I watched it a few times I think, about 20 years ago and I was still a kid. I decided to watch it again after seeing the first two. I didn't particularly liked it. It got entertaining after we FINALLY see Robocop, but I feel it dragged whenever he wasn't in a scene. I still am bummed that Peter Weller didn't reprise his role, but after seeing this crap I don't blame him. Even though Lewis' death was dumb, it still took me by surprise, I didn't even remember she died, so I actually teared up, but that's because I'm an oversensitive fool, I still think it was all pretty stupid. I figured Nancy Allen wanted to get out of the movie so that's why they killed her character off, and it turns out I was right! (at least according to a comment).
Even though I didn't think the second movie was good, at least it was closer to the essence of the original. I know the first one isn't perfect and it is oozing with that good ole 80's cheese, but it had something to say and it was well executed. The other two were clearly cash grabs, just like it happened to The Matrix. Totally awesome first movie, mediocre-at-best-sequels.

I had been waiting for this review since you did the original. 3 sucks but at least it gave us RoboCop giving chase to the villain in a pimpmobile. That's worth something in my book.
