thanks Neil at Italia Autos.
I did up a salvage MiTo not long ago with NSF damage. Looked a state but fortunately all cosmetic. Got it on the road and within a couple of days found the original cause of the crash - a random and spontaneous EPAS fault when taking corners!
Nice one Neil, another great video.
A possible cause for the failure on this car is that the steering mechanism is not mechanically centred.
There should be an even amount of turns from lock to lock from centre. This car clearly has more lock to the left when you turn it to its stops almost at the end of the video.
This is so often over looked when replacing steering column and rack components, then causes pulling and alignment issues until corrected.
Iirc Mito should have approx one and a third turns each way of centre. This can easily be confirmed by using the lower centre spoke of the steering wheel as a pointer. It should end up approx 2 o’clock when on full left lock and 10 o’clock on full right lock.
You’re welcome 🤗
A friends mito also started having trouble and l sorted that by getting a new battery. In this case the problem was loss of power steering. But I have seen many people fixing their electronic PS by replacing battery.
This is a good point. The EPAS computer is very sensitive to voltage drop and the motor requires a lot of current. Sometimes tired batteries can't maintain sufficient supply voltage under such load and the EPAS computer suffers brownout and shuts off. Often gets misdiagnosed as a faulty computer.
This happened to me doing highway speed lost power steering, turning car off restored it temporarily, nil codes, checked battery over a few days of non driving, voltage read 12.5 first day and 12.37 2nd day, replaced with good quality new battery and have had nil issues since, so definitely worth checking.
You doesn't need to change the whole wheel motor. The problem is in the torque sensor, a 20 bucks piece, quite accesible.
You do, after 2008 the sensor and motor became one unit. No more swapping them out separately
Another interesting video. Electric power steering is the Achilles heal of the Fiat/Alfa Group. I replaced the motor 4 times on my 2001 Fiat Punto in the 18 years I had it. Sadly it started to have issues again but the cost to replace & the welding to the floor required to get it through the MOT meant it wasn't cost effective to repair any more.
Great timing on this topic! My daughters Mito had the steering motor replaced yesterday since she suffered increased number of failure while driving. My wifes Mito starting to show same issue, planning to replace her steering motor set in January. Seems like a weak spot on the Mito. Still love the Mito. My wife and two of our kids are all driving Mito 1.4 TB(155hp). Regards from The Netherlands.
Thanks for sharing
Out of curiosity.
What mileage are on the cars with the faulty steering issue?
@@TheOriginalDaveJ happens at any time this was only low miles.
@@ItaliaAutos cheers Neil.
Having just bought a 61 plate Mito for my stepson I'm curious.
Already need to replace the gear position sensor (like hens teeth) as it developed a stop/start issue along with a DNA fault.
@@TheOriginalDaveJ . My daughters Mito has done around 90.000 Miles.
amazing work on you channel ! can't wait to see this
Enjoy.
@@ItaliaAutos great video, thanks
Thanks for this! I have the dreaded power steering cutting out problem synonymous with mitos. I have the courage to tackle it myself seeing how easy it is to remove and replace!
Good luck!
@@ItaliaAutos Turns out it was the battery. Fitted a new battery and problem went away.
Good and helpful video , I had read that shear bolts are sometimes needed when doing this job , but didn’t see that mentioned in vid
Many thanks
Nope none are needed
Excellent you make it so easy with your experience.🎄
A bit easier than the MK2 Fiat Puntos. Dam i done a tonne of repair on those lol. Oh using the best friend of a FCA product owner, the MultiEcuScan and a ELM327 lol. I love that software.
It is good software.
Hey Bro,I wanna change on punto Fl the complet sterring column, i fund a replace part, (same year, same car, but different ECU numeros)Can it be fitted, or has to be "exactly "the same? (There is an other one for 3x price witch has same ecu, but i dont wanna spend more if its not neccessary) Thx
the problem of that is the sensor not calibrated...just learned that once ive disassembled my own..
and for that u need a special device to calibrate the sensor back to point 0
and its not the motor.
the bad thing about the sensor...is that once u try to replace it with a new one...you have to calibrate it manually...it wont work from the ecu.
wish i could have the right tools to fix my own.
Great work!
Thanks
Great video ! Just done my motor following your video , only thing I wandered is do the tongue like extensions on the column mounts fit to anything , they just seem to hang , would I be right.
Great video!
Thanks
This is why Alfa romeos are so much fun to drive
Nice video Neil, maybe a easy thing for you but is it possible for you to make a video of placing LED lights in headlights? Or can you tel me which one you Recommendation
Italien interiors are so well made they don't require a seat cover to protect them 🤔🤔
had power steering motor repaired took whole steering column off in one steering wheel still attached, now steering column wont go back onto the power steering shaft will only go down about an inch. Sorry for commenting again I’m so stuck with this car now
Giving you a workout as well great vid my mrs has a mito in germany is the motor ok for left and right hand drive
Hello guys, I also have 4 errors including steering wheel, hill holder, VDC, ASR. The battery is 1 year old but was the car was sitting for 4-5 months because I was out of town. I reacharged the battery but the errors are still there. Alfa Mito Quadrifoglio 1.4 170cp.
That is a really weird issue. My son had a Mito for a while and his self steered to the right dramatically, only once but it gave him real fright. Fortunately there was nothing coming and he managed to get it under control. Shortly after that he took me for a drive to see if I had any ideas why his gear shifts were noisy. I drove it for a few miles and it did feel really clunky. He went back to driving and I suggested taking it back to the dealer. A few miles later the gear box self destructed, dumping oil and bits of gear box all over the road. We managed to borrow a shovel off a guy nearby in his garden to put some soil on the oil and clean the road up, while we waited for a tow truck.
The dealer refused to replace the clutch when the new box was fitted and two weeks later that, predictably, self destructed.
Unfortunately he lost confidence in it after that and replaced it with a Fiesta ST.
@@deividasnavickas Of course, it is up to the car owner to realise that he should not drive his car incase it has a design fault. I have always bought my cars as ornaments, and never make unrealistic demands from them like providing routine reliable transport. I cannot understand these foolish souls that buy a car to continuously drive. What a silly idea!
This has been a common issue since '99 with the MK2 Puntos which started using EPAS. You'd have hoped they would have a reliable solution by now :(
It is just ridiculous. Whole FCA electric steering is a joke.
@@OneMarko It really is. When it was used in the MK2 punto, it was unheard of in cheap, mass-market hatchbacks so there were bound to be teething troubles. But for it still to be an issue is ridiculous...
What was worse was that replacement units from Fiat were about £800 IIRC, with a two year warranty. Refurb places started offering £250 repairs with lifetime warranties - they had more faith in their replacement sensors (which was/is almost always the fault as Neil says) than the OEM ones!
@@ojmbvids well i had mk2 that had this problem, then grande, same problem. Now 20 years later since they started with this thing, still can't figure it out. I'm not saying this was the only problem, but come on, it is the most basic thing that should have never failed.
Great video! Any tips on how to shift that torx at the base of the steering column. Having a lot of trouble getting enough leverage.
nice one neil
Is this the same thing as when the steering fails and goes rock hard when driving? Great video!
Yes it is.
@@ItaliaAutosthis is what is happening to me at 75,000 miles. Will it be expensive for a mechanic to fix?
Hi Neil, What do you charge for this replacement ? my father in law has an issue with his 2012 1.4 Mito (currently in France)
Hi bud thanks for the video, I have just brought one for my wife for school drop off, went to pick up today drove off and 1 mile down the road the steering lost assistance. Drove back to dealer, not sure if I should return or fix. So stress my miss really wants the mito
If there a chance I could bring to you guys. Thanks
Going to at least be the same problem. Book it in and I’ll take look at it.
Neil … What’s your experience please with the weak ESP and the Mito steering column faults over time. Multiple. Just the one Mito ?? I’m puzzled. With 2 Mitos in stock same time. And 2 sold last month I’ve hit Steering Corrector unavailable 1002 in MES Fiat software. Wondering what VDC is and if a basic Mito has it or not. I’ve a non DNA Sprint Mito and Turbo Benzina 155 Mito both in stock same time. Both ends. Well excluding 170 4 leaf that is
can the instructions also be used for the Fiat Punto 199?
Great video, thanks a lot for it, just one question, would it be possible to modify the steering column to lower the steering wheel so that it doesn't have that weird angle (too high up for me)?
Yes it should be possible with a few extra washers
From having a read I need a CANtieCAR interface to be able to do everything. Your interface in this video is black. What interface is it. I see you have the registered copy. multiecuscan 4.6
Hi Neil , can you change the universal joint shaft without removing the steering wheel?
My daughters mito has some backlash due to a worn joint.
Possibly but not tried it. Don't see why not
When calibrating the steering position angle back to zero, will this wind up the clock spring?
C1002 steering column motor, torque position sensors, C100B, Torque limitation request from NFR, C100C, Torque requested on steering wheel from CAN (module DST)
Lady in her Mito temporarily lost her power steering in her Mito. Key off and key on all good again. Those were the codes.
Any thoughts?
So after posting the above text I saw the video. Sensors in the power steering motor fail.
The ladies power steering is back to normal. Would you tell her to monitor and if happens again to have motor changed, or straight away have motor changed as you know it will happen again. Mito is 2010
Hi i have a abarth and the error that it gives me is C0051, i read that could be the rear right wheel sensor could it be? The car just gives me the asr and hill holder control errors in the dashboard. Best regards
Electric Power Steering is one of the worst developments in car design in the last 15 years. It is so unreliable compared to hydraulic power steering. I've had 3 cars with EPS and have had problems with them all. In my current Suzuki Swift, it's failed twice and the bill is up to £1,300. That Mito steering automatically turning full lock to the right is pretty frightening! Can't believe there are no recalls to check for this.
It is reasonably common with all cars with electric PAS, not just Fiat group, even "reliable" Japanese stuff.
13 mins labour I bet your customer was happy
If only it did take 13 min
@@ItaliaAutos I had one in px today, similar issue, but just failure no spinning, only 30 mins from you, I'll be calling you tomorrow for a quote. :)
@@chazoclock ok speak soon
Is it expensive to fix the power steering that goes occasionally?
Around £500
What version of the Multiecuscan do we need to reset the steering as you did at the end of the video? Can it be done with the free one or does it have to be the registered one?
paid. worth every penny
Which solftware do you use or scantool?
Neil is using multiecu scan software which covers all Alfa and fiat models, it works very well.
Good video Neil. Is there any extended warranty on this as it's a safety issue?
Yea you would think Alfa Romeo would be interested in why this is happening
Definitely a safety issue and it pulls into oncoming traffic.
You ever had any aggro with a giulietta steering rack? Mines making some nasty noises....
Yes. But not noises.
@@ItaliaAutos 🤣 minor technical fo par... Seems the track rod end hadn't seated correctly when I did up the nut.... Donk Donk Donk. Better now but the shock tops are telling me that they need to be replaced! Alfa joy!
How much roughly is this to fix ? Mine doesn’t spin the powered steering just stops
Around £500
Hello do you know the best place to order a steering column from can’t find any that arnt gonna take months
Send current one to he fixed.
Thankyou so much :)
Does the new motor need to have the same code/ serial number as the old one ?
Same part number
My power steering fails while driving and I get the message "Power system error, steering corrector unavailable". I'll switch the car off and everything will be alright until the next time. Do you think the motor is to blame or is there something else that might be involved?
Yep same fault as this video
@@ItaliaAutos Wow, so not a sensor issue at all? The dealer wants to replace the whole steering rack as well as the steering position sensor.
Apparently if you sit there with the engine on tick over and turn the wheel the revs can drop, the voltage to the power steering drops and it can stop working. If you're idling and turning the wheel give it a few revs.
Im writing because i was in autobahn and while driving the steering wheel stopped working. ( on the dashboard i had the steering in red but when i turned off the car this icon dissappeared, now i dont have any lights anymore in the dashboard) fortunately, i managed to turn off the car and when i turned on the problem dissappeared. I fear that i have the same problem , i will go to a local garage on Saturday. But if i purchase a used steering coloumn how probably it might be that this problem might still occur in the future? So my question is: im gonna buy a used coloumn but how can I avoid purchasing a bad one? Thank you so much!!
Lifetime warranty on rebuilt ones so don't buy used
Where can i find it in italy?
Do you maybe have any link?
if you completely removed the steering motor would the car still work?
Yes, but it is very heavy - much heavier than you'd expect and not something you could really drive with
Hello Neil,
Got an issue with my 2013 Abarth Punto. Seems like the steering always wants to rest at 12:30 going straight and easily veers to the right. Performed two alignments and supposedly it's all perfectly straight.
Would this possibly mean a faulty angle/torque sensor?
No errors, steering feels fine turning both sides. Could this be corrected with an angle sensor relearn?
Thanks!
Somthing I'd need to check
Can this happen while on the move?
Yes.normally just loss of power steering
@@ItaliaAutos cheers. can't believe there wasn't a recall.
How much does the motor cost?
Used ones are around £200 but they do vary depending on what part number you have.
A lot of refurb places will refurb your current one now for a little less, and you usually get a lifetime warranty too. I've used "BBA Reman" and more recently "ECU-Testing" - good experience with both companies.
I've been quoted £700 for this, is that reasonable? It sounds very costly for 2 hours work?
Bring it to me then. £450.
@@ItaliaAutos WOW! thats a big price differance! I might just do that, I'm 48 miles away but It'd still be cheaper even if I got it transported down there...
Hate jobs under the dash. So awkward.
How much would this sort of job cost to have done?
2 hours labour plus the part
@@ItaliaAutos so how how much would that be?
@@martynwildish5257 I just got quoted £700 for this :(
Best video title ahahaha
It was going to be this mitosis like my wife "always right".
How much is the new one?
Not cheap.
@@ItaliaAutos The steering on my mito is always biased to the right. I always thought that is because of the road bank angle. At low speed it's not bad, but at high speed on motorways I always have to hold the steering wheel to keep the car straight. Do you think my steering is faulty?
TIA
@@ampm9771 don't know without looking at it.
@@ampm9771 sounds more lika a alignment thing.
Amir, your problem is probably a binding brake caliper but could also be a broken spring.
Both common problems.
Mines still going strong after 55k miles lol.
Lol... 55k miles is nothing. You'd hope it should still be working. Will it still be working at 100k - that's what you want to be asking.
My theory is that it was the daily driver of a right wing politician who also owned a Ctroën XM with Diravi selfcentering steering. Of course the twit kept blabbering on about that car to his passengers while drivign this one. Thus the poor little Alfa developed a inferiority complex. Who wouldn't?
Great video!
