So glad I watched this video My 99 dodge 2500 was for a long time tiresome to drive and hated the way it would wander. I was very serious about selling it, but now I will try this. Thanks again
the track bar is also one of the largest known causes for super sloppy steering on almost any dodge and i would recommend people to check the track bar before the steering gear box but both are known to fail early.
Can't go wrong with a Red Head. Been using these for all our 2nd Gen and 3rd Gen trucks. We also use the Solid Steel Industries Steel Stabilizer to tighten up the steering with a "Luke's Links" adjustable tie-rods, and track bar. Really appreciate your focus to detail, and the time you take to share. Great content... thanks!

The gearboxes for 2nd and 3rd gens are underbuilt for the Cummins. My first choice would be PSC. You won't need the steering stabilizer bar either. It's more expensive but it's a big improvement and the only brand new gear box you can buy for a 2nd gen.
Why couldn't this video have come a couple weeks ago? I could've saved some money 💰 lol. Loving the 2nd gen content! It's helping me with my 02. Keep up the great work!
Awesome awesome video Greg A, nothing finer than taking the 2nd Gen out of the steering lol. After owning two 2nd Gen trucks, I can say without a doubt they are all over the road with the factory steering box. Quite literally the two things you do with a 2nd Gen when your not driving it, is fixing the steering, and fixing rust lol.
That's awesome you did this. I was just getting ready to order me a redhead box for my 94 second gen cummins that has almost a million miles on it. It still has the stock box on it. It's all over the road with the new 37 inch tires. So I order the same ajustable track bar a box brace kit and a new steering stabilizer kit. The truck has been in my garage for almost a year now get new paint and all rebuild. I cant wait to get it finished.
I put a redhead on my 06 super duty. I highly recommend them. I do wish I would have went with the more aggressive tighter gear ratio. Adjusted and ready to go.
I put a redhead box in my 01 3500. Only lasted 6400 miles. I don't put a lot of miles on my truck. The redhead was two years old with 6400 miles. The original 130k miles. Replaced the redhead with cardon lifetime replacement. Redhead offered me $100 off of a new one. My truck has a steering brace on it.
I second the motion Greg!! I have installed Newley a dozen red heads over the last year!! Life changing for a second gen owner. Older superdutys get to be just as bad and the redhead comes in clutch there as well. Also customer service is great, one of the ones I installed had memory steer after being replaced and they shipped me a new one right out and made it right!!
Looks like a good place you ask this question 06 Dodge 2500 with Cummins Does the death wobble, and we can't track it down. Everything is tight. Checked the entire front steering add suspension, recently found one the shocks/ dampers was bad, replaced them still have it. Any direction would be great
Just changing the steering linkage and track bar on mine alone made a HUGE difference. My truck was obviously a farm truck based on some of the things I've come across
I thought you were going to say BUY A FORD. HAHA. Yeah I slapped a Read Head gear box on my 06 Ram 2500. The first one had issues, looked used when it arrived. They sent me a replacement and that one is still in use five years later with no issues.
You should have done a comparison between redhead and bluetop. Both are great brands but I have hear redheads quality control is not what it used to be.
@@decentgarage its hard to compare because the red head is on a 3rd gen and blue top is on a 2nd gen. But I prefer the redhead. Also last I heard blue top was out of boxes...so you have to send yours in and they rebuild it. So they wait time would be pretty long.
Pulley puller with an impact works wonders on that pitman arm. Just returning the favor for the advice because I’m on my 3rd steering gear and I’m getting sick of it lol
I been looking at getting a steering box for my 06 as well. Was on the fence about spending the money on a red head , but I think you convinced me it's worth it. Already have the steering brace on but my box is SHOT!. LOL . Thanks, great video
I have been driving my 2 Nd gen for 300,000 plus miles on 35” tires now 40” irocks, with 2 fingers, stock components for V-10 Which is HD standard on truck back then they did advertise HD steering, been through 2 reach bars, one set of ball joints only one bad at 300,000 but I swapped all joints, 3 sets of wheel bearings Assyrian about 100,000 per unit, 3 sets of tie rods, never had death wobble, one steering box son did that so not sure of mileage
Quick ratio Greg a lol you the man , that will be nice for towing you know when you have to weasel a big trailer around stuff you imagine a quick ratio steering box for towing good idea !!
The 2nd gen is my favorite truck of yours. I've got a 2nd gen 1500 that needs a loooooot of work but I wanna diesel swap it soon as part of the restoration.
I did a lot of home work on the red head and got mixed reviews. So I went with a similar company they just use a blue top I believe the company is family related. Any way the blue too has a 3 year warranty and I have O complaints. I’m about to do the 4 th gen steering up grade 👍🏻
Honestly I don’t even bother trying to remove the pitman arm from the steering gear most of the time I have replaced them on trucks. Normally I just buy a new one every time I replace a box because they are usually either stuck on there good from decades of service or were already replaced by a previous owner who failed to torque it down properly because they just used big wrench’s to tighten it up and then years later it’s vibrated loose and now the splines are sloppy. I will say I’ve never had any issues with NAPA steering gears but I’ve only used them on GM and Fords, never had to replace one on a Dodge yet but I have a feeling that I’m about to so maybe I’ll get a Redhead one since the Dodge steering gears seem to be prone to be more problematic than the other manufacturers
170k on my 3rd gen. Learned a lot chasing my wandering steering down. Before replacing the steering box, make sure other steering components are not having movement. 1. Ensure no Track Bar movement (you did). Upgrade bolts to 9/16. Takes out 14mm slop. Make sure frame mounts have not been wobbled out. If so, weld washers. 2. Upgrade to 2009+ setup (you did). This geometry setup helps prevent death wobble. Also requires newer pitman arm. 3. Intermediate shaft bushings (often overlooked) on '94+. The coupler has a rubber coupler that gets soft through time. Heavy/large tires make this rubber a delay/non-response time for minor steering movements. Put these bushings in on any 94+, steering issues or not! You may feel a tad more road sensitivity through the steering wheel. But oh so worth the change. I'm betting many change out all other components, still have an issue, and never know about this $10 fix. Steering is tight right now. But I've had Red Head in my sights once the steering box gets worn.
190k miles on mine and it actually isn't too bad, it has a little play but not nearly as bad as most of them😂. Definitely gonna invest in a redhead now tho

I put 3 redhead gear boxes in my 1997 2nd gen cummins in 8 years. The 4th gen box setup is the absolute best. You can buy the spacers and it bokts up. You do need to shorten the linkage slightly to make it work. The size of the internal gears and the increase in ease of steering makes it like nothing else. RedHead has a very limited warranty. They would not do anything for me because it would fail after the 1 year warranty. They are quick to blame everything but their box. Even after 3 failures they wouldn't discount or do anything other than sell me another one. They are better than stock but its still a under sized gear box for all that weight. If you run oversized tires its even worse. I was only running 33's. With 35's or bigger the box will fail even quicker. I have a RedHead steering box in my Duramax and have had no issues. On the 2nd gens they do not hold up. I still like the video but do a 50k mile update video and check play.
Nordic67, I read your post with a LOT of interest. Mine is an 01, with only 108,000 miles. I had the front end lifted, only enough to make it level. Also, it's 4WD. Steering was progressively getting worse. Just 2,000 miles ago, I had new ball joints installed, 4 new Billstine shocks installed, a new upgraded steering shaft, and a new track bar. After all that, it was taken to get aligned. Seems like it really didn't really "Solve the problem". Have been told about Red Head boxes, but your comment, about them, worries me. Geno's Garage sells PCS boxes. Are they any good ? At this point in time, I don't care what the cost is, I just would like "That problem", to go away, forever ! There has to be a specialist steering shop somewhere in Northern California. Any other tips ? Thanks, Pete.
@petermoale2116 Hey Pete, yes the gear box is a PSC. With my entire front end (4wd) being rebuilt the gear box was the problem. Also if you have the cash the Thurn Fab upgrades for the 2nd gen is worth every penny. I recommend you reach out to HMS Diesel they do a lot of dodge trucks. HMS Diesel is in Dublin California. Stay away from left coast Diesel. Ask for Nick over at HMS. Slowly I was able to upgrade all my suspension front and rear with Thurn fab products. The truck drives like a brand new truck now. Took many years and many headaches to get where I'm at. Feel free to respond again if you have any questions.
@@Nordic67 Thanks for your reply. I just recently had a new track bar installed, 4 new Billstiene shocks installed, new EMF ball joints, and a new steering shaft (the upgrade.) after that, it was taken to get aligned. After parts and labor paid, it didn't feel any better than when I took it there !!! I did notice there is a LOT of play at the point where the steering shaft goes through the firewall. It's a 2001, with 108,000 miles, LB club cab,4WD, auto trans (that was recently re-manufactured with ATS parts, stage 4. Truck is great, except for that damn steering ! May just have to show up and let Nick "Feel it". May I ask where you are located ? Thanks for you help and comments. Pete
I bought a brand-new dodge in 01 it has 370.000 miles and I have never replaced any front-end parts and still drives as good as new. the only thing I can tell is that it does need new shocks.
I installed a Redhead gear box, but still have play, truck wanders. Any tips that I may over looked. All the front end parts are good. 1999 Ram 2500 4x4
Just replaced power steering gear box on my 96 ram 1500 pickup, 4wd/ 5.9L eng. Bought the only one available that NAPA offers for this model...STILL has PLAY!!!...about 1" on left & right. Also, steering is stiff, not fluid like any power steering should be. They asked me, " Are you sure its not something else in the steering column? …I kind of doubt it. So, this is the last thing left after completely redoing my entire front end and suspension; everything is new. Any suggestions...I know...get a redhead.
Hey Greg, I’m picking up another 01 tomorrow and it’s an ST, looking for leather seat upgrades at least for the front, any recommendations man? I can’t find anything really. It is a manual so I don’t want a super wide top on the seats
So this may be a stupid question, but you said its 4th gen steering linkage but your link was for an 03 to 08? Wrong link or is there something I’m missing 🤔
You can pretty much eliminate it by putting a bushing in the steering column under the dash there’s like a rod thing in there and it slops around I mad my own bushing bc the price is dumb for the one people sell and dual fox stabilizers my truck has over 300k and it is really tight now and it drives so nice
noahgray-jt4gq, I have noticed that too. My 01 has 108,000 miles on it, but steering is terrible ! 4 new shocks, new ball joints, new upgraded steering shaft, new tie rod, and after all that was taken to get aligned. Seems like it really didn't do any better. Now, steering wheel position is 90 degrees from horizontal ! Not hearing very good things about Red Head boxes. What exactly did you do for that stabilizing bushing ? Machine it yourself ? Installed from inside cab, or in engine compartment ? I work as a machinist, and have a lathe to make one. Thanks for your comment. Pete
Redhead rebuilt my stock steering box after 125k and it came back with messed up splines. I sent it back and the next box they sent had significant slop in it. It was removed in less than a year. Did I just get unlucky or not? I have a supposed new PSC box now and it too came with slop. I'm really sick of this problem. The steering box play is the culprit to my wandering, all other components are new.
Ok...so i have a 92 and a 99. Been trying to get 99 to steer properly.had it at local 4wd repair place (the best) and still wanders on highways. Had redhead box (4:1 ratio) put in and up grade tierods. Still wandered ON highways, much better on back roads!!! But still scarey!!! HELP!!??
Another informercial. Vice Grips Garage puts out an epic 1 hour 40 minute feature length will it start and 600 mile drive home with zero product placement.... I guess that's why VGG has 500k subs and GregA can build a new huge workshop and has a fleet of a dozen mostly identical trucks.

170k on my 3rd gen. Learned a lot chasing my wandering steering down. Before replacing the steering box, make sure other steering components are not having movement.

Little bit at a time the steering wheel is now 90 degrees from straight across. Constantly correcting the steering wheel. I do have to tell you that I have about a 2.5 to 3" lift on the front, to make the truck level. Will that mess things up ? I live about 300 miles North of Dublin, CA.
Those wheels........ wow, just wow......
Redheads are a good choice for GM vehicles as well. I love mine in my 2500HD
How big of a difference is the redhead gear box if I could I get it to fit on a 1500 2nd gen
What year is the 2nd gen? I have a 1997 2500 Diesel extended cab 4x4 that has always “drifted” and wonder if this would work on it?
I installed a Redhead gear box, but still have play, truck wanders. Any tips that I may over looked. All the front end parts are good. 1999 Ram 2500 4x4
do you need to get the steering box with the hydraulic assist ports?
Just replaced power steering gear box on my 96 ram 1500 pickup, 4wd/ 5.9L eng. Bought the only one available that NAPA offers for this model...STILL has PLAY!!!...about 1" on left & right. Also, steering is stiff, not fluid like any power steering should be. They asked me, " Are you sure its not something else in the steering column? …I kind of doubt it. So, this is the last thing left after completely redoing my entire front end and suspension; everything is new. Any suggestions...I know...get a redhead.
So these aren’t available for the rack and pinion assembly… shame cause I was def going to buy this
Pre 98.5 you need a 7 degree reemer to make the 4th gen steering work in the joints an I had to take an inch out of the tie rod bar
Awesome have to check them out for a steering box for my jeep cherokee xj..thanks for the video
Ran the same steering on my 97 had to cut it down roughly 1/2 inch of each tie rod at the threads since the 4th gen is wider
Got a new redhead box in the garage to go on my second gen. I’m currently on my 3rd reman box in 80k miles.
I ended up installing the 3rd gen linkage as well. This is the best my truck has ever steered.
Wat kind off oil did u use sr, i jus got mines in yesterday, and theirs no info on oil.. ATF+4 or power steering fluid
good video as always Greg!
Hey Greg, I’m picking up another 01 tomorrow and it’s an ST, looking for leather seat upgrades at least for the front, any recommendations man? I can’t find anything really. It is a manual so I don’t want a super wide top on the seats
How do I find parts info for track bar and tie rods you used
So this may be a stupid question, but you said its 4th gen steering linkage but your link was for an 03 to 08? Wrong link or is there something I’m missing 🤔
I’m wondering the same thing! I’m about to order all the new steering and suspension for my truck and what track bar did he use???
Steering and front end parts are next on my list for my stock 02 after my new AirDog 165.
Could you please me know where you got those headlight housings!
Did you have any issues using the 4th gen parts? You used a 4th gen stabilizer and steering box?
Key to run and and rotate the upper sleeve to straighten the wheel.
Pete
I JUST replaced my steering box from an Autozone one and it's total crap. Looking into getting one of these next time around.
The upgraded steering is awesome !
Hey man where did you get the adjustable trac bar? and is it foruth gen?
Do you have the Part number for the adjustable track Bar?
2nd gen 1 ton steering pretty much same as 4th gen. I'll be getting me a red head I bought a stock one. Junk within the year.
FUCK yes. Goddamn I love this comment so much. Glad I'm not the only one.
Dad (elderly) owns a 2000 Ram 1500. Cops pulled him over for weaving too much. I drove it for him and its not him - its the truck. Unreal. Feels like my old Mustang with a severely worn rack. Will look into at least the gear box!
I have been waiting for this vid thanks brother
Can you post the link for the redhead box please.
I dunno....it appeared there was still a lot of play in the steering wheel when you test drove it.
Replaced the same thing on my dad's 7.3 powerstoke and the steering is 100% better now that it's replaced
does it work on dodge ram 2500 1998 8L V10 Benzin?
What’s the part number for the box?
Normally I follow your lead Greg but not this time. I've heard pleeenntty of terrible things about redhead. Hopefully it works out for you but im gonna go with a PSC. actually surprised you didn't put a 4th gen on it.
I'm debating on a red head or blue top!
@@bimmerDallasBikersUnitedDBUCan neither. PSC. Redhead and blue top are just remanned bullshit. PSC is almost twice the size because they cast brand new housing and have bigger components....they're also a legit steering company.
I have a 2000 1500 v8 almost entirely stock anything fixed was with junkyard parts, I can drive with one finger.. the steering wheel isn’t even straight cause the guy i got it from fucked it up while fixing some wiring issues odd
Saw the Amsoil stickers, I immediately knew this guy knows his shit
I'm on my 2nd redhead and I still have the steering issues on my second gen . I still have a wobble on my steering and I've had all my front end on through. So I don't know
How long does a redhead last with 24x14 wheels
