- Not too much to put here folks. This “new to me” dirty dodge needed a home and I had just the space for it. Cheap enough we could overlook her obvious issues, and with all the potential to be this years firewood delivery machine! So here’s to the first video with her, and some of the immediate fixes we made after getting her home. Stay tuned to see many more videos I’m sure as we drive and fix her up.
This just feels like OG youtube. No innecesary overdoned editing. Just a guy recording what he loves doing.
I can’t tell you how good that comment makes me feel.
@@MXguy95 - what year is that Dodge?

@@MXguy95Just wanted to say that I love that you found a 2nd Gen Dodge like this in very very good condition given how old it is. It's hard finding them like that where I live unless I go a state or so over. Love this video hoss, I'm gonna be coming back here to learn about this truck if you make more videos about it🤙🏻
Every other video now begins with, "Here's yo' boy backatchu with another video..." I hate fads.
I love second gens, and even have two myself. They are the king of the cheap trucks as far as someone who knows how to work on their own stuff keeping them going as long as you repair the valley pan gasket and replace the sheet metal with aluminum, and keep your transmission serviced and bands adjusted.
great video. Love the 2nd gen, love how much you got done, can't wait to see more progress.
I wish I lived in a state/ area where THIS was $500. In my area, you cant find ANYTHING for $500. If you do it is only a part off of a car. For $500 - $1000 here you get what used to be a vehicle. Been sitting for 10 years, frame looks like Swiss cheese, transmission shot, engine wont run, body also looks like Swiss cheese. $1000 - "No low balls, I know what I got"
This sounds like Argentina, where a r12 sells for 4000 us$
Love the video and I’m looking forward to more videos about the dodge. You got a good deal for sure and surprisingly it’s in great condition! Cheers
Congrats to Dirty Dodge 2. She is a looker. Great video as always.
Thanks 👍
One of my favourite colours it looks amazing when resprayed with extra clear coat
I have a 2000 Ram 1500 with 6 cylinder engine that I bought in 2002. All these years later, it still runs and hasn’t cost me too much money in repairs. This truck must be from the south or southwestern U.S., given how little rust it has on it. I have rust-through over all 4 wheel wells and on the rocker panels - up here in “rust belt” Ohio. My fabric seat is still in good shape. 👍🏻 But it meets my needs and I will drive it as long as I can. I think these vintage Dodge’s are good trucks.
P.S. I had critters chew on my wiring harness twice. Had to start spraying the engine bay with stuff that they don’t like the smell of - once per month. My dash is cracking - not to that extent. My tailgate straps rusted through - replacements from Chrysler cost outrageously, so I rigged my own cables. Oh, and my windshield is cracked similarly - from scrapping/chipping ice - happened in 2007 and still fine.
Respray some clear over the paint too give truck some protection !
Oh look, a real truck!

You are smart..
I run the same truck in France, but 4x4, 318 ci...same color, even with the black hood 😂
Take care buddy...
I have the same truck but mine is a short bed. But your interior looks way better than mine
There's some interesting brush on insulation I saw at harbor freight if you wanted to check it out. It's probably sold online too.
Reminds me of the 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee I bought off Facebook for $800, I put maybe $2000 in it and now it's my daily driver
Hey man first time watching you and gotta say that you look like the male version of lucy from the new fallout show 🙈 keep up the videos 🙌🙌
This dude has the best job in the world
And the older second gen dodge ram trucks are the ones that have red green blue brown and other interior colors lol...
Other than the crap plastic dash boards on these old Rams and a weak transmissions they were pretty damn good IMO. I owned 2 1997 models and loved them. I really miss mine. Transmissions will last if they were serviced from the beginning. The plastic dash boards are the achillis heal for these. You can hardly find any junk trucks with good dash's and they do not make them new. Somebody needs to open a business that makes after market dash kits so people can restore them. Still my favorite Body Style Dodge truck too.
They do in fact make complete dashes for these trucks now. Along with quality replacement tops and front bezels now. My 99 has a new one in it. (Also had to get the transmission rebuilt ) haha
@@MXguy95 That is good to hear this was bad for the trucks.

Between 2012 and 2014 I bought several cars for about $500 off of Craigslist or marketplace. Most of them were very dirty and had seized engine. I would spend 2-3 weeks on each car. Used parts are easily available in my area. By the time , I was done working on them, they ran and looked very new. I enjoyed working on these cars. You can never beat the feeling of turning a key on and drving a car you spent so much time at. It is a joy for every mile.
Man, that sounds awesome! I hope you made some good bucks!
why only 2012-2014?
I always worked on my own cars. In 2012-2014 had delays license where I would buy cars with seized engines from auctions and rebuilt the engines. That was my part Time job 5pm-midnight Monday thru Friday. I was too honest when it comes to fixing and selling cars so I didn't make much money. 2 years later, I decided to close own my car business.
That's the problem with marketplace. I recently bought a Mercury sable and there were four other people ahead wanting to look at it. Somehow I managed to get it because all four of them didn't show up. I consider that a stroke of luck. It was owned by a little old lady who took immaculate care of it but her family took away her keys when she had a run-in with a yellow safety pole that dinged the driver side door. I ended up fixing the damage by pulling off the plastics on the inside and manually working the dent out and now it looks as good as new. At only 125000 miles she runs good as new. Did I mention I only paid $1000 for it?
it sounds like you got a great deal hopefully it's still holding up well
I love single cabs so much, having a bench seat and a buddy is just irreplaceable!
You need to listen to a song. It’s called “Me, and you, and a dog named boo” by Lobo. It’s a good summertime, windows down pickup truck riding song.
@@MXguy95 Thanks for the recommendation! I have such a loving spot in my heart for that kind of 70's music, but it'll be a bit before I can have a nice windows-down summertime ride to test it out!
@@MXguy95Just gave the song a listen, Very good song.
A good running truck for 500 bones? Can't beat that! Easy repairs too, great work Jay.
You got that right!
What's scrap values at now a days? At 500 bucks I'm guessing you basically paid scrap value or no?
@goleafsgo8496 yup basically but a emaculate condition truck at scrap value.
Bought me a 96 ram 1500 laremie, found it had a rusted out frame. Got a frame painted it, redid the suspension during swapping it over, new brakes. Rebuilt the engine and transmission during swapping them over. Decided to paint the truck while swapping them over too! Now I'm considering doing the interior also. THIS TRUCK WAS ONLY SUPPOSED TO GET A FRAME SWAP IN THE BEGINNING!!! YEP
“Fixing it up a little” is a slippery slope bud! Starts off as a cheap truck you got a good deal on, then the next thing you know your trying to fix a couple dents, spruce it up with some wax and BAM full on barn restoration 😂
@@MXguy95 yep, happening at this Moment...
How the truck doing 😂@arthursmith5409
@@nobody-sy5xw Well, I'm having to pull the engine and put it back to stock. This electronic engine was not made to be beefed up! All is done, outside of the engine, painted, wheels.
23:17 The cheap Chicom ball joint "kits" will literally fall apart in a few months, at best. If you're gonna put the work into it, put something at least half-decent and raise the resale price to cover the difference. The buyer will be much happier having quality suspension parts in there, as opposed to something he'll need to replace soon.

thats a hell of a rig for $500 jay. i drove a 2500 v10 second gen as a work truck for a while and loved that thing to pieces. i also dont think ive ever seen one of these with an intact dash!
I live in the rust belt, you'll find original intact dashes up here, but at the price of the whole body being eaten by rust lol. I'm tempted to come down south and buy one of these to body swap onto a northern 4x4 frame because all the ones up here are ate up by rust in the worst way. Although the frames on these seem solid, don't see too many with rotted frames, just the bodies.
@@jaymoe5.7 im in the rust belt as well and i dont think ive seen a rust free example in a long time
@@x1warrior1x85 I've seen very few nice, rust free examples in the past few years. One was a guy who made a twister replica truck and told me it had parts from 4 other trucks on it and another owned by an elderly gentleman who never drove it in the winter and only used it to haul a camper down to Florida in the winters. Recently I did see a half ton forsale on marketplace that had 60k original miles and a torquestorm supercharger on it but otherwise looked completely factory but he was asking around $24k for it. I dunno man, rare to see nice ones up here but it's always nice when you do.
That truck was a pretty good deal Jay! Hard to come by those anymore. Truck cleaned up pretty good too. Gotta love them no frills models. Less to break.
Sweet Dodge! You don't see many stripped down 360 1500 Rams, seems like kind of a rare truck. I'd love to find a 2nd gen v8 on the cheap like this! Great video as always Jay.
Yeah and when you find them unless it's a fleet ordered company truck base model it's usually the 3.9 litre 239 cubic inch V6 very rarely is it a 5.2 litre 318, or the 5.9 litre 360 gas motors and a buddy of mine had a very frequent maintenance truck but started slipping because he couldn't afford to keep that up and other than the Indiana salt on the roads eating up the sheetmetal of the truck, it was 3 below zero and the 112k truck acquired a water pump leak at the bottom of the water pump and you couldn't see it,we just knew it was overheating and still had zero heat in the cab, well after two gallons of antifreeze and a gallon and a half of well water it finally stopped overheating and he drove it two miles down the road to his mom and dad's and said when he got up at 7am it was halfway down the radiator and after a few hours at 24 degree weather he got it to run and then went to top off the coolant and had to dig ice chunks out of the radiator and after that he drove it to town to put gas in it and go job hunting,,well he made it to the gas station and with a complete new fuel system it didn't want to start and left to go to McDonald's and grab a bite to eat and it instantly started overheating, drove it to Walmart and let it cool off and it was completely out of antifreeze so he went into Walmart and put antifreeze back in it and shut the hood ended up only going to three of the eight places he planned to put application and give his resume to.. he started driving it back out in the country towards his mom and dad's and got two half a mile from my house and it started overheating and rattling, and the truck had steam puffing out of the front of the 98 ram st long bed bare bones except the 360 and power windows, didn't even have am fm stereo cassette player, just Chrysler am fm clock radio, non ac, and we checked it over and then shut it off and let it cool off and checked the spark plugs every one was wet from coolant... I cleaned them up and we gapped them and put them right back in the truck and fought it to get it started for about 2 hours immediately noticed it now knocks!! My best guess the block froze because of the leaking water pump and it constantly overheating didn't just blow the head gaskets but cracked the both cylinder heads and maybe even the block, it had a rebuilt transmission but it ended up getting sold for scrap
Gotta love a 2nd gen. Probably my personal favorite truck of all time. Not sure I’ve ever seen that blue either
I always wondered why dodge went so far with the styling when other trucks of the era were square and simple. I liked the square and simple… but after driving them and then owning some for myself I really get it. It was a huge step in a different direction for trucks to come. And dodge really made their trucks look like nothing else first and that style continued for generations of rams afterwards. Great trucks, good engines (in this generation anyway) and strong as an ox for what it is
Agreed!
@@MXguy95 Dodge had been selling basically the same truck since 1972 and had less than 5% market share. The genius behind the second gen ram was making it look so different from the Ford and Chevy. Love it or hate it, it got attention and their market share went up 4 or 5X during that generation. If they had put a square simple front end on it, nobody would’ve given it any attention.
1958 to 1970 my favorite ones.
Are you gonna do a follow up on this Ram ? Many of us are interested!!🤔
Anytime you can find a reasonably rust free truck that runs & drives for $500 today, you have a gem!! A few dollars & a little loving turned this into a decent ride! Kudos!👍

I can't believe that you found a running vehicle for under $1000! Several years ago I found a 98 Town Car for $900. Daily driver for several years. It replaced my old 85 Chevy Caprice woody wagon I got from a neighbor. The Town Car had just over 100k on it. Can you avoid an inspection and just put on "historic" tags (or equivalent there) like here in MD? I have never heard of someone replacing the striker plate! Good work man!
Man, that truck here in Central Florida, where the construction is still booming is $2000 all day! On top of that, we got people arriving from all over the world to live here. I check Facebook and Craigslist daily, and I got a similar deal for $500 in 2020, but that is it. Takes consistency, persistence and luck to get deals like that anymore. Good job!
It’s way more competitive nowadays. All the different groups of people in the same places Did u notice the cost of land and taxes is skyrocketing . There’s all these people no one know and all these different people and no one really gets along.
I remember when central Florida was empty
$500 is an absolute steal. My bro-in-law had an old 79 Ford F100 2wd with rust all over the place and he sold it for over $4k on an online auction. I'd buy as many trucks like yours as I could all day long for $500.
Wow he did good! I would buy two or three more at this price too! But sadly, I think was a “ once in a while “ kinda of deal for me 😅
I did a revive on a 1994 about 6 months ago. Same green color. I had to put a fuel pump in it and then found some mouse food wires. They are really good trucks, people just let the maintenance get too far ahead of them. Nice work cleaning up another one.

Nice find for the price imo. My room mate has a 97 or 98 that is identical to this truck, only maroon instead of green. Hes clocked about 70k miles in all the years he's had it, and the only major issue he's faced is that the drive line shelled out at the rear end, which fortunately a buddy of ours fixed for a cool $100 parts included.
He paid $800 and it's carried him everywhere he needs to go for just about four years now.
Love your videos as always Jay! Pretty sweet for $500 and rather clean with not much wrong. Love this generation of the Ram and a lot of people I know own them as well. Good trucks and can't wait for another video on this one. Sweet find!

I like the second generations compared to the newer rams, my stepfather used to fix a lot of them, like Clifford, that had the broken dashes! We’ve actually borrowed a second generation from a dealership that he worked at and we would usually put a dash Matt on it I remembered you started out with the white one that you saved from the junkyard about four or five years ago!
@@user-dd3pl9ii2h grew up in 2nd gens, built multiple 318 and 360 LA engines and a few Magnum 360's for drag cars, and while those engines are damn tough, reliable and able to make power with a good set of heads there really isn't a comparison to the hemi in terms of power. I have a 2012 4th gen that I daily drive and I too deleted the MDS from mine but I tow with it a lot so I added heavier springs and helper bags in the rear. Tows a 8000lb trailer with 600-800lbs of stuff in the bed no problem and barely squats. However mine wiped a cam lobe at 157k miles so I replaced the cam with an off the shelf Comp cam and hellcat lifters a few years back and had it tuned. Now it's really a monster! They come factory with a tiny little baby cam in them, but once you add a bigger bump stick and get rid of the factory tune they really wake up! After doing this to my truck and making over 450hp with barely any mods I went and picked up a 392 BGE block out of a wrecked 2019 Ram heavy duty and a forged rotating assembly for it and I'm gonna do a twin turbo build on it for my 79 Plymouth Volare Duster drag car. I've seen similar combos to what I'm building make over 1100hp on the dyno with factory heads! But I have a set of AFR 224cc black hawk heads on order and I'm gonna top em with a Holley hi ram intake so hopefully I'll be able to make a bit more power. These hemi's are kinda spendy but man do they make power!

Owned my 01 1500 sport for over 2 years now and its been a headache of a truck but no matter what i do to it that 360 will not die they are amazing engines that just keep chugging even after 200k+ miles.
I can’t complain, my others have absolutely been put through the ringer and held up great. I hope this one does the same. Putting a little work into it in the beginning I don’t mind, so long as it gives me a few good years of service in return
At least this 2nd gen had the decency to shed all of her clearcoat; mine is still hanging on to half of the clear, hiding the sexy ultra matte emerald green. Mine was sitting for 10 years in my driveway, started her to roll the tires occasionally. Got back to her this summer when I decided to sell my hybrid as I don't drive enough to own a newer car, working from home - hopefully stay that way til I retire in a few years. She passed emissions with what gas was left over from 2013. I ordered her several goodies for Christmas. She's my forever girl - 5 speed club cab.

@@MXguy95 it was the best sounding option. Price had nothing to do with it
You donut's brother?
Those hinges man
Jay, I remember seeing this Dodge on marketplace while searching for parts for my '97.
Honestly, that interior is worth more than the truck itself. In fact, you landed on a honeyhole if you had to part it out. That spruce green interior is an extremely rare color for 2nd gens. They were only available for the 96 & 97 model years, and was only available on Emerald Green & Bright White. They were available in cloth & vinyl on the WS (yours), ST, and SLT trims. The only other time I saw this color interior was in 1999, on a White 1997 Club Cab SWB 4x4 SLT.
Didn’t know the interior was that special, just assumed it was something for the base model trucks. I kind of like it this way.
I couldn’t believe I was able to get it, I knew someone would have beaten me to it
@@MXguy95 For $500 you scored big time! I'm just wondering if that truck was a special order, either by the original owner or the dealer. The majority of those WS models came with the 3.9L standard. On occasion you'd find them with the 5.2L, especially 4wd models. It's rather unique to have the 5.9L on a 1500 WS long bed 2wd model.
If you're looking to restore her, spend the extra money and buy a dashboard from LMC or Mopar. LMC has the interior paint to match, and the adhesion promoter. Don't ever install one of those glue on covers. I made that mistake years ago, and nearly destroyed my dash frame. Once that cover is glued on, the heat & the cold will cause the cover to buckle. Thus causing the frame supports that house the radio, gauge cluster, HVAC, basically everything behind the bezel to crack & break away. I replaced mine with a Mopar dash back in 2019, when my heater core went out. Fortunately, I was able to fiberglass repair my dash frame. It's a pain, but well worth it. My entire dash is still holding up.
@@AngryCatMan1982the Magnum 5.9 had a lot of power. This truck would fly.

You get much better fuel mileage with a 2WD less moving parts and quite a bit lighter.
Been here for almost ten years watching you. Keep it up
cant go wrong for 500 buck, I purchased one of these when they first came out I think in 1994 ( still have the window sticker someplace), but black and was extended cab, had the smaller v8 ,2 days later I went thru a car wash and got sprayed on both sides as the doors were not aligned correctly, 5 days later backing out of my driveway I heard this weird clunk-pop then I stopped then kept backing out, then went into drive and would not budge halfway on the street, revved the engine a bit then it popped into gear, went to work and end of day to leave from work it wouldn't go into any Gear, called the dealership and they towed it and had it for 3 weeks because there was no fix and was a common problem with brand new trucks, dodge gave me an extended 100K full coverage warranty to keep me happy, I traded it in the day after for a TransAm, when I got it back from repairs
