Sack of Bones - Sum It
the collar is a safety to prevent the rod from coming out of the steering gear in case the bottom bolt comes loose. It needs to be up top. If the bottom comes loose where you have the collar will not stop it from coming out of the steering gearbox.
That's what I was thinking, up at that little boot would make it stay the same length, steering gear is mounted to frame, so dimensions aren't supposed to change
@@joshuabushard7432 Even though the steering gear is mounted on a frame there is a certain amount of body flex on any vehicle. As you can see the depth of the rod and design is different on the original steering rod. Newer does not always mean better. Sometimes its just a cheaper design to accommodate older systems and to make profit. That is the reason for the additional stop. To prevent them from losing in a lawsuit. Improper installation that leads to death is not their fault. It becomes the fault of the installer. Big companies only care about the bottom line. PERIOD. If they can make it cheap and make a good profit with liability then its a win for them. The collar makes the installer liable.
@@joshuabushard7432 btw I grew up just down the road from this channel. County 17 for those who know..... Roosevelt County, Wolf Point MT. Love MT but hate snow so I am a Texan...lol
Your correct sir
@@johnperkins630 I know that the frame does flex, but also know that it shouldn't do so significantly, ie, enough to change the length of the steering shaft
We have a tracked machine and it’s nice for picking stuff up and not worrying about flat tires, but going across hard summer pack July august ground it sucks, I remember the first year I worked for my fencing boss and I picked up about 18 line hedge post with the wheeled bobcat machine and it picked it up but the tires squated and then we got the new cat 259 and it’s on tracks and I do not think we will go back to wheels ever again for a main machine
Before you paint the box/headache rack for the ol dodges' flatbed. You should rework the headache rack so it's at least as tall as the top of the cab, that way you can haul longer materials, like lumber for a house or garage, and not worry about caving in the cabtop....just my .02
Tracks are only good in limited situations, provided you have the right tracks. With the wrong tracks they are worthless in the snow, at least you can chain up bald tires and get some grip. Little TLC and the old truck will be good as new, hopefully the new truck will be back up and running soon. They make a module that disables the active cylinder management thing or whatever Chevy calls it, so it always just runs on all eight cylinders.
Go with the patina. If you paint the bed sides, the rest of the truck will look wrong.
Hey Nick, I wanted to tell you dude about your PSA. I sought on UA-cam very well done the one you did about the farm safety and little kids very well done and boy do I agree with you about how precious your shoulders are it’s 1000% true
I've driven deere, cat, and case track steers.....case by far was the roughest/ most rattling machine
that splatter from the rear seal is part of the auto rust protection attachment
That collar does a 2 fold job, prevents the boot from sliding down and keeps the shaft in the steering box. So, as another commenter said, it needs to be up top.
Certain skid steer brands do ride nice and smooth, others, not so much as you found out. My personal preference is Bobcat, they're just a solid machine.
Hey Guys Zach Johnson hit a Million! It’s your turn now!
LETS MAKE IT HAPPEN PLEASE PEOPLE LETS SHARE THEIR CHANNEL AND PROMOTE THE WELKERS!! TOGETHER WE CAN MAKE IT HAPPEN!! ❤️ Kobe would be so happy!! ❤️🖖🏼🇺🇸 God Bless.
👍 Eric thanks
I guess what you save by not using anti-seize on tie rod end threads and such, or Loctite on the steering shaft set screws helps pay for the new skid steer LOL
I don't know Nick. When you are working dirt, tracks are king. They say Once you go Cat, you won't go back. Seriously, the Cat Multi Terrain is the smoothest machine that I have run. The new Bobcat or John Deere are ok. It makes a difference what tracks you use also. Nice video.
we have a cat skid steer on tracks, hate it rides rough and they get one little thing in them they run off, tires are much better for farm use
That's what we think, tracks have their purpose but our operation wheels just do better.
john perkins is right the collar goes up top it is your second lock so the steering shaft can't collapse. seen it before dodge steering
Hi guys you can’t beat wheels on your fork truck! Tracks are for diggers and dozer’s. Nice to see the old Dodge back out on the farm. Rob from the 🇬🇧🍺
when I did pm' s I always checked breathers on gear boxed they often plugged internally with rust and dirt causing pressure when oil heats up and can cause seals to blow. scrap piles are a plus!
I had a tracked Bobcat and it was useless pushing snow especially if the sun was out. Flat ground not so bad ,but cleaning out hilly areas it just spun..And yes it rode terrible.
If you find the noise from the chain drive to much. We tipped our machine on its side and filled the tank full and cut the noise in half! Our local dealer also does that to all machines now! Happy CASE STEERING!!
#GoodYear use to sell flotation tires for the old new holland L778 in the late 70’s and 80’s they were smoother than the industrial tires every one uses now. They looked kind of like the LSW’s on the 747. Also the big ditch witch tire machines use them. Thanks for sharing y’all’s videos.
I hope you’re getting the snow cover you need this winter to jump start planting in the spring. Here in central Wyoming it’s been an epic snow winter, reminds me of the 70’s & 80’s
It's interesting that you swapped the red one. But you made some good points for the swap. Travel time and comfort make a difference when you're using equipment. The truck sure needed some love.
Best thing to do get out get some fresh air i spent Christmas in hospital for other reasons but the gave me a dose of self same little bug so i got out PDQ and out fishing next day within a couple of days ALL Gone .
I love the old Dodge pickup. It brings back memories from when I was a kid.
Holy crap, you guys have no snow there. We’re only 400ish miles north of you in Alberta and we have hardpack snow that had 3/4” of rain on it this winter. Not good for snowmobiling but good moisture, hope you guys get more snow and get some good moisture in the ground for spring
We live in a bubble, moisture goes above and below us but not over us 🤷, but we have seen more this year than previous.
Nick that stop collar goes up on the drop to stop the rod from pulling out
That’s why farmers have a great supply of fix it all with duck tape, bailing wire, and JB weld
Don't know many people that can provide a good laugh while working on a vehicle. Good one.
Nice new machine! You have to upgrade the tires though! Those little construction/forklift wheels don't look right! The balloon tires look so much better and would be better suited for you guys!
maybe you should give the truck a good wash from the underside and paint the the bed than i would look like a nice workhorse!
another great video, love your sense of humour and performance but then you are a Mr Hollywood stand in. Surprised the tracked skid steer took a long ride, the newer one sounds like a much better fit. The metal yard just keeps producing great items, all just waiting to be picked up. My first thought on the truck deck was you might want some sort of siding on it. Next thing bone yard had the perfect item. thanks for taking the time to produce these, always watch them several times.. The spread sheet video was one sweet production.
Thank you John!
I love working on and owning the old stuff vs the newer. That is why we always keep trucks around the farm from 70s and 80s.
Only thing I know about vehicles is how to drive them😂, but I always wonder if parts for old trucks are more expensive then new since they’re harder to find. I’m surprised he can even still get parts for an 80s truck.
@@chrissyfrancis8952
When it gets cheaper to buy than it is to maintain, they buy new.
Hi Christy
@@RobertWelkerFarmerBob hello there Mr Welker. I’m getting excited for planting season & praying the drought is over! I’m hoping Nick is disappointed in the Fall that he didn’t plant every single acre. We’ll soon find out.
You gotta read the closed captions for this! You installed the new shaft into the steering "Beer" box, and its a mile and a half to you "Vineyard". How are your grapes doing?
LOL! I watch a lot of trailer channels and the auto-translate really throws up some rubbish and on one occasion gave me a sentence that was absolutely rude. I mean x-rated rude and they were talking about the trailer running gear or something.
I had a dodge the same . Those front axles tend to bend slightly!! I trussed mine . Those were good trucks. Wish I still had one!! Too much coyote hunting back in the day!!!
on single wheel trucks with same tires front and back get 2 mason strings tape across rear tire pull string to the front tire. straighten the front wheels best you can. now pull string tight touch rear curve of front tire check gap on front curve of front tire look for around 1/16 each side. then pull steering wheel reset straight
Hey Nick, morgan here cause I ain't there. My name frequently gets traded for the common nickname of More'gonzo, Na, don't ask why when the obvious is most easily figured out. Our old iron is still keeping many rigs going as our pockets say new to us is good enough. Ah before I ramble too long, my comment is about skidsteers.. the Case "Manticore" as always.. spelled wrong and just hoping you have heard of the new beast... if memory serves me at all, its a 550 in size with a quick change on its front so the bucket and pallet forks can go on but hold it... a dozer blade, six way blade with the backblade ripper attachment. Plus it has a real ripper on its backside as to a toy in sense. The ripper on the back is no joke. I wish to say now that this machine is a game changer in skidsteers. If and when those peas, beans, corn, grain or cow turds ever turn into money for you, then add it to a wishlist that is longer than the new to this rig sideboards and headache rack. I think that if only the headache rack remains after some time goes by, the back of the cab will say thanks. Prices on fuel make it hard to even think a diesel engine is the sweet swap for a pickup that never really needs that extra torque a diesel is known for. Who knows just how many years go by before you get a newer machine like the new beast mentioned as Bill Gates takes over running our country eliminating our election process. Its how I feel its going.... in any case, Joe ain't running things as again I bump the political sides of a conversation not supposedly to be mentioned. Guys, as I age or ferment along in years..... I see our youngest generation be hornswoggled into thinking.. thinking might just be a "too strong a use of that part of our vocabulary." Longevity has been added to each generation of us as time does go by. In my earliest years remember that around thirty five to seven was old age and commonly known to be when many men passed on. Now we are nudging a part that says to me.... maybe a hundred will be the new old age limit to drawing SSI. If your a poor but hard working man, it might at least feel this way. The floors although just a camera angles for inspections on this end seem quite solid like the many nice rigs just parked along the Alcan highway system in canada where no salt was used on the road system. No place to send any metal to meant the old rigs when farmer/traveler said new is now in order and their old rig parked in the weeds sat for years with a seat torn and a few rodents make it home, are now being discovered for a new old toys for young folks to discover and make road worthy again. Just when found in the last few years was a ultra rare 1942 Hudson pickup truck with some really innovated for the times. It was setting in a barn that had given up due to snow, rain, time in general took out its ability to remain standing... plus a tree also laying on the roof of this barn helped to see it collapse onto this old truck but tin worms hadn't removed its own ability to remain in general good health. That particular pickup would be a even trade for this new skidsteer I referred to. I guess this is a good spot to close out my storyline or a book would fall into line here... hoping a few more years remain for Coby and that all Welkers remain healthy, your voice is troubling as our new strains of bugs... Errr, don't get me restarted/LOL, wishing ya all good times and health
Nice to see the ol farm truck getting some love.
Is there a groove or lip on that collar that the boot can be slipped over? Also is there any zerk above the boot where the shaft slides, for a little give? The boot accordions, to keep moisture from getting in,and rust stopping movement, which would 🤔 cause undo pressure on the U joint. If no zerk, anticez the ...p out of the shaft.
That skid steer needs some Welker Farms stickers on it asap...
I'm from Oklahoma and I went to school with a Welker. In fact, I worked for his dad and his older brother. They had property in Skedee, Oklahoma. Do you have any relatives in Oklahoma as I think you once stated that your grandpa or great grandpa came from Oklahoma.
Hope you are feeling better Nick. It is nicer on wheels when you can than tracks, hope it works out great for you guys. Be safe. You should paint the dodge farm truck and rack so it resembles a Bud if you can.
Bad pinion seals are very common on high mileage vehicles or “used ones” by “used” I mean USED hard worked! It can leak to mass damage in the rear end. You gotta change it when just started noticing leaking oil everywhere.
Yep
Pinion bearing took out that pinion seal, Nick. Low fluids will destroy the front of a differential in minutes. Glad your feeling better.
Do you have to get at that bearing from inside the diff? Big job. Removing the pinion and axles? If you have time to reply, I appreciate it.
A easy way to check your tow in and tow out is to put a piece of angle iron on the outside of the tires to measure front and back
I imagine you don't have great cold weather performance for a while after first starting, since I notice the metal hose from the exhaust manifold up to the valve on the air intake funnel is missing. That preheats the air coming in until the engine fully warms up
Nice old farm truck !!
Thanks for another great video.
It was interesting and enjoyable.
Like your new yellow skid steer. Fully understand having the wheels instead of the tracks. You all did a good swap. Looks to be a nice unit and fits better on your farm operation and ground. Good deal.
Nick, good job on the dodge pickup. You have all the odds and ends fixed and a much better pickup now. Good job nick.
Thanks for everything nick.
Trust you will get better soon. That stuff is hard on you.
Take care.
The Iowa Farm Boy.
Thanks Steve
Thanks Bob for your kindness. Steve
I noticed that you did not mention the hole in the exhaust pipe🤣
Love the new skidsteer makes so much sense for your outfit. I think you should give the old dodge a rattle can makeover shes earned it 👍
You’re always so much fun to watch! I always love how farmers/ranchers recycle EVERYTHING! So very resourceful and responsible…
👍
Unless you need the flotation and traction of tracks they are an expensive item to maintain. We have 1 track machine and 7 wheeled machines.
As cool as tracks can be. They really didn't seem to be the right fit for your farm. Wheels all the way! That was a nice shade of red though. Great episode! Take care and God bless!
Where's your anti seize on the tie rod ends, your going to miss the TV380 when it gets muddy.
Get the headache rack and side boards off and cleaned up paint it with Rustoluem epoxy black it will last a long time.
the exhaust pipe before the muffler looks like it has a big rusted out hole in it too
I saw that too. What could possibly go wrong with a little carbon monoxide in the cab?☠
Yep Nick them dodges keep going we even put a new cab on a Dodge just keep going
Nick, You said you were going to make the Farm truck less of a Rust bucket... and literally placed a heap of Rust coloured Rust onto the bed.
Get out the Sanding discs and make it pretty ! It does not deserve to have that rusty thing spoiling its appeal... I would go with Battle ship grey and make the bed blend in with the body work.
And whilst your at it.. Spray paint the SV340 Red... then I wont miss the TV380 so much lol.
You guys should do an updated equipment tour that would be cool
Love restoration shows and farm shows. Got both here!
Our old pickup steered like that. Didn't know it wasn't normal until we bought a newer one.
Nick you are rare form in this one. The Beavis laugh on the seal - hilarious.
the joys of old trucks
Hi, Take the bed rail off the Dodge and put on the ground . Then give the kids o job of painting it. What could go wrong?
You didn't want an orange one, they are great machines. Love mine
This video is why I like your channel! You fix your own stuff unlike others especially millennials who send it out to have others work on their stuff! You also use your equipment and keep it while others channels are nothing but what new expensive thing will they blow money on next! He did take his dog for a ride though! Oh, you have been doing that for years!
🔥right on guyzz, really enjoy watching the old dodge come back to life, solid old truck 🛻 and perfect farm truck 🔥👊🔥🏍🔨⚙️🛻
Paint the bed and the wheels case red with silver accents. Then she would be mint.
I usually count how many turns it takes to get tie rod ends out. Replace same turns in.
my Takeuchi has the industrial tracks which are rough as heck and not great on snow pack but i do allot of manure work and not much roading so tires arent as practical and i cant justify the cost of putting new tracks on that are more flexible.
its funny that american farmers whith wide open spaces loves their 11.5 mph bouncy skidsteers and in confined europe we love our 25 mph agri telehandlers
Great video as always! God bless you all and keep you safe and well!
Your exhaust broke upstream of your muffler, aft of the transfer case while you were looking the opposite way behind your head on your left above you 2:28.
feel for you i lost my voice with covid and never came back fully, the truck will be nice when it is all done
Nick I have hand it to you are pretty good you are doing thing I would never try I could take it apart but some one else would have put it back together , I waiting for farming to begin my son has a 90 hp track steer new holland he also had a mulched and a grapple he is in the concrete business
Needs glass packs. Even better straight pipes.
Move that collar up to other end next to shaft Nick, safety collar
Nick & Bob, I really liked that old Dodge pick up, Nick you done a great job fixing up those little problems on the old Girl now the Dodge is prancing like a young Colt, Great job, I don't know about the Skid steer ,I like the tracks it grips better ,I think when you build your new house Nick it might not perform as good as that Red model did, it might be a little slower but I think it has better traction, but a skid steer is great to have a you Beaut Video, cant wait to see the tray on the Old Dodge painted, Blessing to you all, Regards Trevor.W.Bacelli. Now that you have wheels on the skid steer, can you put a hitch feature on the front to allow it to be towed by trucks or tractors? Have it on the quick attach, drive up to a truck's hitch, lower the lift arms raising the front tires, then tow to your destination.
Not with the hydraulic drives.
Luv it . I got an old dodge just like her . For the farm . She keeps on running..
Good video the case skid steer with the wheels is a lot better. God bless see you in the next video.
I bet it doesn't look like that now, I'm talking about your advanced snow melt. We just got a foot of snow. It's been a long winter...
1:00 don't forget the massive hole in the exhaust
You guys have such an amazingly wonderful parts department up there! Sure hope there has been more moisture than what is showing in this video tho. -Bob...
Loving the random farm projects. Channel is Awesome 😎
Glad you enjoy it!
Hope you are all recovered Nick! The sound of chain drive was a bit concerning to me but I've never driven one over 3 mph. 😂
Loved the video!! Enjoyed the seal replacement and the way you did it. lol. Glad you are feeling better!
You would a little wore out to if you had two Welker boys driving you, just kidding. Great video sorry you got sick. Love old trucks and cars. You were to funny today. I like your new Case wheels
Use what you guys like but I will always perfer track over tires
Tires for the win 👍
Lot of slop in that pitman arm and that collar on the steering shaft goes up against the rubber seal to help keep debris out of the slip joint.
Your family just has too much fun farming. Enjoy your videos so so much😊
Tires SkidSteers are great til you have mud… then they are completely useless. We have a tracked Case and it’s not nearly as rough as yours must be your hard ground.
That old truck has been well loved. 😂😂😂😂
I know ya know, but ill say it anyway.... You'll get to the end of the breaks eventually Nick. Lol neglected old equipment does this.... But at least the old stuff speaks in a language most of us understand... Lol thats the bright side.
Umm that chunck of 2 by makes me think maybe you should put some eyeballs on the motor mount bushings. Lol
You definitely tried to make the red one work. I remember the video you made changing tracks to try to get a better ride.
You need to get Rock Auto as a sponsor!
Surprisingly that dodge still holding seat up in cab
Hard to get rid of the red one 😢😢😢
