The B-Wings are one of many unique fighters in Star Wars, and it is still very cool.
Except they are so hard to fly they literally have Japanese Zero marking on them....
And then Someone put 2 B wings together, made the most terrifying 1 man vessel and then named it the Death Raven

Carried an unfair prejudice against this ship for years. It always seemed so slow and unmaneuverable in the Xwing games. Hearing your break down of it's features makes me wish I could fly it again. Wonder if a flight simulator could be made to incorporate the gyroscopic cockpit.

Honestly its one of the reasons I hate the new trilogy. Theres just not reason to not have the B-wing all over the place. I'm so sick of the B-wing never in movies. Its finally got put into the last one but come on, its pathetic. Disney is just terrible.

the B wing is powerful, but the Y wing is a flexible fighter that is much easier to fly and use

The Y-Wing is a multi-purpose fighter-bomber that is designed to be used against capital ships and other fighters.
The B-Wing was not designed to fight another fighter, it was designed with a very specific purpose which was to destroy capital ships.
@@Obiwan7100 that's why I like the Y wing over the B wing, I prefer multi-role vessels over single purpose, look at the Empire with that ideal throughout their fleet and you'll see why I think this way
@@LoneWolf20213 Rebels had a more haphazard type of Fleet but in the end they were better then Imperial fleets due to the flexibility of them
Same goes for the Republic cause they did have some good reliable ships that could have multiple uses

360° rotation of the ship around the cockpit module, in addition to changing the firing field, would allow the pilot to roll the ship without rolling the cockpit, thus maintaining a frame of reference and creating a true relative "up/down" flight orientation.
I think B-Wings should have been in The Last Jedi instead of the bombers we saw.
Yes. Those bombers were an homage to the directors grand pappy who served on a B-17 during the Deuce.

just keep in mind it was an entire dreadnought they needed to destroy, the only reason the starfortress was able to one-shot it was the fact it was armed with 1000 proton bombs
Fast yet durable, and capable of taking on everything from a starfighter to star destroyer, the b-wing is an amazing fighter. It is a shame fighters like this were uncommon, especially for the empire, where they could have been extremely effective in crushing the rebellion. Similar to my TIE Defender, which, had it been mass produced, would have destroyed any enemies of the Empire
The B-wing and the Tie Defender are my favorite Star Wars fighters, both because they are OP, and because they are distinctly Star Wars design. :D
As the governing power in the galaxy, the Empire needed a cheap, high volume fighter to occupy and garrison all the things. Remember only a small fraction of the Empires forces were ever involved in fighting the Rebels/New Republic, even in the big, set piece fleet battles, whereas the Rebels could concentrate their forces as they wished, and required better gear to make more efficient use of their limited resources. It's the classic quality vs quantity dilemma.
Even the TIE Defender is only a partial solution for the Empire, because the Rebels could largely neutralise them by just operating in areas where they weren't present. Defenders were far too expensive to re-equip every ship and base with, and with most of the galaxy to choose from, the Rebels could just keep attacking those places and ships that didn't have them
@@talltroll7092 True, but the Empire could have built less Death Stars and Star Destroyers, and put that output towards better, smaller ships.
There was an UGLY starfighter from a bounty hunter attaching two B-Wings to one cockpit.
One is great, so double it.

The B-wing is less like a fight or a bomber really, and more like a Star Wars version of something like an A-10 Warthog. Especially with that underslung chin gun. Way I see it is: you call in A-wings to intercept fighters, X-wings are the "Jack of All Trades", Y-wings are great against capital ships, and you call in the B-wings if you want to seriously tear shit up!

The first time I saw this ship, I fell in love with it straight away, one of my favourite star fighter bombers
Again I have say, this my favorite design for starfighter in star wars. The asymmetrical/symmetrical design is a signature of star wars' design for ships and why I love star wars outlandish ship design.
My favorite configuration of this magnificent heavy fighter is the version you get in the B-wing expansion to the original X-wing.
3 lasers, 3 ion cannons, 12 proton torpedoes.
The Y-wing may be the old reliable multi-role fighter/bomber.
The B-wing is a purpose built heavy attack fighter meant to engage larger capital ships.

The B wing E is my favorite ship. I love the spinning and wing action. Very well intonation and tone.
The Resistance Transport was a converted B-Wing into a troop transport. We see Leia flying in on one in TFA. Also the escape pod Finn and Rose fly out on was a salvaged B-Wing cockpit into a small escape shuttle.
only the cockpit of the resistance transport and maybe the weapons were from the B-wing. the main body was taken from a couple passenger modules mashed together

Not gonna lie. This fighter has always been a low key favorite of mine. It’s just such a unique fighter/bomber.

This is kind of overcomplicated for the Star Wars Universe, a laser rangefinder would do great, but the writers clearly were inspired by old school range finding methods for artillery pieces, primarily for tanks
One of the simplest examples I can think of is the Pz.Kpf.W VIII Maus, the primary 128mm cannon had a coaxial 75mm which was primarily for range finding, or a more practical example that was actually in service was for the American M40 106mm recoilless cannon, they were fielded with a small, low velocity .50 caliber semi auto gun on top of the barrel for range finding
Concept is pretty easy, if the small gun hits you adjust ranges accordingly for the bigger gun

Its over designed, needlessly complex. How does having your entire ship rotating around your cockpit make any kind of sense? Or having your primary guns so far offset from your point of aim? It just looks ridiculous.

Dale Ford Your assessment is correct, however this is Star Wars, not real life. It is said to be very effective when you can master it. Bruh dude even said in video that it has one of the best targeting systems. It is one of the best bombers in Star Wars history.
@@panafricanmarxist7632 the one thin I will say it has going for it is the narrow sight picture it presents when you're chasing it. It's so skinny from behind that it would be a real pain to actually hit. I still think its over engineered though. But I also really like the k wing and that thing takes 4 people to man so I could just be biased 🤷♂️
This 80's kid thought the B-wing was a pretty cool toy ship. The gyro-scoping cockpit was a cool touch.
I believe B-Wings based upon star wars rebels are of Mon Calamarian designs . Mon Calamarians are known for having very durable ships that where originally civilian crafts I wouldn't be surprised if the B-Wing had a civilian luxory counterpart which allowed the Mon Calamarians to do ship production under the noses of the Empire while at the same time building a war fleet.

When I was a kid the B wing was my favorite fighter toy. I remember trying over and over to order it from Sears. They were always out of stock because not many were made compared to others. I would call Sears catalog every day for a couple of months until they finally got one. Then I yelled at my mom to come from the living room and finish the order with the credit card info. When it arrived I was very worried as the box had gotten smashed. It was ok however.

A few modifications would have made the B-Wing a terror in any engagement. Replace the durasteel armor plates with impervium plates, upgrade the power core, move the autoblasters to the rear to act as a rear gunner, add more accurate rapid fire twin laser cannons in their place, and add either an astromech or droid brain to tale some of the work load from the pilot.
I used to love the B wing. As I got older I moved onto the TIE series

4 LAAT ball turrets mounted on the wings and cockpit section of B-wings, mounted on the raised turrets of Lancer frigates, which are mounted to barbette turrets hardpoint of SSDs, which in turn are planted ass-first all over the surface of a Death Star, provides the ultimate combination of full-coverage firing angles and concentration firepower!!!
Back in the late 80s, playing the original RPG and running Strikeforce: Shantipole was one of my favorite gaming experiences. (Doing Tatooine Manhunt, which introduced Jodo Cast, was another.) Getting to fly _the_ first B-Wing was something else; it could, and I did, disable the Imperial Nebulon-B set against the PCs at the end single-handedly.
I really like B-wing and for some reason there is not many videos about it.
It always remind me mosquito fighter bomber great planes but with many flows and that's why I love it.

Great video, you could add that B-wing was a base for the extremely lazy ship called Resistance transport, which used it's cockpit and a part of it's weapon's platform on the main wing.

My favorite Star Wars fighter. Bummed they had issues with filming them in RotJ and couldn't use them more in the Battle of Endor scenes. I wish Lucas had gone back and added some scenes with them in with his new edits instead of the nonsense we got stuck with.

i loved this ship as a kid, i thing the unusual looks drew me to it (plus it has alot of cannons), now i prefer the more sleek designs of the A-Wing or the TIE Interceptor.

In squadrons I’m going to try spinning because it’s a good trick.
I think I would have gone with a B-wing squadron having regular b-wings and then one with the same composite laser as the prototype to act as an extra heavy support. Have to make sure that the outward appearances of all of them would be the same though, so the super-laser variant couldn't be singled out and targeted before it was able to do its work - and then after firing could have a maneuver where the squadron quickly merges together and crosses paths while shifting directions, in order to try and re-obfuscate the heavy support b-wing and in that way it can continue firing without hopefully being singled out too easily.
From what I've seen, this is a beast in the X-Wing games!
