Hello MMBxMOB ! Nightwish fan here, your musical quest summoned me.
Welcome to the world of symphonic metal! And thank you for checking this legendary band! This live recording is from Wacken Open Air 2013, together with Floor Jansen [pronounced Yansen], the 3rd and present female singer of the band, in front of an 82K audience.
About the instrumental and vocal added parts - it's good to know they recorded their orchestral and vocal back tracks with prestigious institutions as London Philharmonic Orchestra. London's The Metro Voices choir group and London's Young Musicians Children's Choir as their regular partners.
Since this is your first Nightwish reaction, it is my duty to give you the [updated] short history of the band concentrated by Ann Waychoff, one of the biggest Nightwish fan who has since passed away (and I am doing this in her memory):
" Nightwish was started in 1996.They are considered a Symphonic Metal band, with a female main singer. They are from Finland.
Tuomas Holopainen [pronounced Tuo-mas], the keyboard player, composes and writes the lyrics for 95% of their music. [Sami Vanska was the bassist of the band starting with their 2nd studio album, he was with them until 2001. Then Marco Hietala was bassist and vocals, since 2001 to 2020. He recently announced his retirement both from the band and the public life for the next year at least. Then in May 2021 Jukka Koskinen [pronounced Yukka] became the bassist of the band, for the Human :II: Nature tour - and recently, the band announced he became a permanent member] And there is the guitarist Emppu Vuorinen [he also recorded the bass lines for their 1st studio album]. Then there is Troy Donockley from UK who is a multi-instrumentalist and vocals. Jukka Nevalainen [pronounced Yukka] is the drummer. In 2015 due to Jukka's health issues Kai Hahto became the drummer and as of now is a permanent addition.
Nightwish has had three singers. 1st one was Tarja Turunen [pronounced Tarr-ya] (Operatic vocals). She was with them until 2005. The 2nd one was Anette Olzon from Sweden (Poppy, strong vocals). She was with them until 2012.The 3rd and current singer is Floor Jansen, from Netherlands (power, operatic, soprano.....most versatile) - you just heard her.
There are live concerts that you should use depending on what era. From Wishes to Eternity and End of an Era (Tarja), Montreux Festival live 2012 and Exit Festival (Anette), Live at Wacken 2013, Live at Wembley, Live at Tampere, Vehicle of Spirit, Decades live (Floor). I hope this helps.

The Valkyrie singing in this live version is Floor Jansen. There will be a guy named Gabriel that will arrive. He has The List and The Lore. He's a general of the Nightwish Army, and his list is excellent. Storytime or Ever Dream would be next, though I like Romanticide. These folks don't do a bad song, so you can't really go wrong. Please do the live versions, this band is better live. Floor is our Valkyrie Queen, sent to Midgard to show us poor mortals what singing is supposed to be. You've scratched the surface, my guy. I loved the expression on your face. For those who know Nightwish it's a familiar sight. Anybody, from all over the world, who hears this for the first time, is totally flabbergasted. Wasted. And the wonder is: You can listen to it 1000 times ( like I did) and still get goosebumps and tears listening to it. It just is the most beautiful peace of music ever written, performed by the very best musicians ever born in combination with a Dutch singer that, how shall I put it, is the best performer and singer of all times, by far. There are a lot of excellent singers out there, don't get me wrong. But Floor is an alien. She was sent by the Gods to bring happiness and joy to mankind on this troublesome rock. Show her to a guy called Vladimir or Kim and I would not be surprised if peace is the result. It is not just singing. It is transferring emotions by truckloads. Her stage presence blows you away.
By saying this I really need to point out that ALL members of Nightwish were on that same rocketship towards earth. A God sent group of musicians and beautifull people.
I must congratulate you. By discovering Nightwish you just opened a box filled to the top with pure happiness that will enlighten your life. The music is epic, the message beautifull. Take your time to read the meaning of songs because there always is a story behind it.
Finally: stop telling you're stupid. You are NOT. I am 67 and discovered Nightwish and Floor Jansen just a year ago. Now THAT is stupid 😂

Ha, this was pretty much my first reaction to hearing this song and band too. I've seen many people with all kinds of musical tastes, including me as symphonic metal has never really grabbed me outside of Nightwish, become smitten with this band. The singer in this performance is Floor Jansen btw, the third singer who is still with the band today.

Nightwish was formed by keyboardist/ songwriter Tuomas ("to - mas") Holopainen in the 90's, originally as an acoustic/ folk project... He had played in numerous bands in Finland, and asked then 18 year old female singer Tarja ("tar -ya") Turunen to record vocals for the Nightwish demos... However, Tarja was operatically-trained and her powerful voice inspired Tuomas to write heavier songs and that made the first Nightwish album 'Angels fall first' in 1997... Tuomas did the male vocals, but did not like how he sounded... so, he would ask other singers to contribute male vocals to Nightwish songs after 1997.
My impression of Tuomas is that he seems like a quiet, brooding genius... extremely creative, not big on being up front on stage, and reluctantly took on the role of 'band leader' of Nightwish. He is one of those artists who is more concerned about the art he creates... not the money he makes. Tuomas once said he enjoyed playing smaller venues in America because of the interaction in an intimate setting w/ the audience... even if the money is less.
Tuomas wrote the majority of songs and lyrics for Nightwish, and after their debut album was recorded w/ Emppu (guitar) and Jukka (drums) and Tarja (vocals) ... (Emppu also played bass on the record)... Nightwish played their first live concert w/ Sami (bass)... 2nd album 'Oceanborn' (1998)... and 3rd album 'Wishmaster' (2000) ... brought Nightwish fame and record sales as the band toured Europe.
However, Tuomas was burdened w/ his newfound fame and lamented that he had 'lost his innocence'... He felt by 2001 that he was no longer writing songs to express himself; he was now writing to sell records and appease their record label. That angst was present in his lyrics for the 4th album 'Century child' (2002) on which Marco Hietala (bass + male vocals) joined Nightwish.
5th album 'Once' (2004) was their biggest record w/ Tarja and saw Nightwish playing huge venues in Europe and S. America... but they played their first US tour in '04 in clubs.
In 2005, Nightwish fans were shocked after the band announced via 'open letter' that singer Tarja Turunen had been fired... Apparently, she and her husband were making demands from the band that they could not deliver. After a final homecoming show in Finland in '05, Tarja was given her notice... She began a solo career in 2007.
After 2 years, Nightwish announced the addition of new female vocalist Anette Olzen from Sweden... and the new album 'Dark passion play'... Anette was a pop singer and not operatically-trained. Nightwish wanted to go in a new direction musically and vocally, and 'Dark passion play' became their biggest-selling album as they toured until 2009.
Nightwish released the concept album 'Imaginaerum' in 2011 and announced a full tour in 2012... However, Anette was pregnant that year and she got sick that year on the US tour... Nightwish made the decision to send her home and Dutch female singer Floor Jansen was hired by the band for the tour and Anette's replacement... Multi-instrumentalist Troy Donockley was also added to Nightwish... However, drummer Jukka Nevalainen announced that his health issues related to insomnia mandated that he take a break from Nightwish in 2015... Kai Hahto (drums) joined in 2015 for Floor Jansen's first Nightwish studio album - 'Endless forms most beautiful.
Floor Jansen was also operatically-trained in the Netherlands and joined the symphonic metal band After Forever in the 90's... They released a few albums before the band split up by 2009... Floor formed her own band ReVamp and released 2 albums... She was taking a break from music in 2012 when he was asked by Nightwish's managers to fly to the USA and finish the band's tour.
She has also released a recent solo album.

Hello dear reactor, Nightwish is been my favorite symphonic metal band for years. I've seen those eras with two previous singers, first Tarja, then Anette. I have nothing to complain they fitted Nightwish at that time. And now Floor Jansen is there. I am so happy to have all of their studio albums since 1996 including the rare 1996 collector's edition album. I was at their last concert this year 16th June, and I tell you if you ever have a chance seeing them live go! When I drove back from Vaasa city (Finland) to my home (Oulu city) about 400 kilometers...I just was...what did I saw and listened. My cousin told me years ago that Floor is God's gift Nightwish (I don't believe in God) and I said Nightwish is God's gift to metal music. The people in that crowd I was, they were such nice and polite, we were all friends and polite people. Nightwish will publish their new album 2024 and after that they propably start touring again. I will be the first in line seeing them again. Tuomas Holopainen (keyboards) is our metal Mozart who writes and composes these beautiful music. And I have one question to ask him, but I don't say it in UA-cam before I see them live. But I have to say about that drummer Jukka. I know the current drummer is Kai Hahto, very good and professional man. But Jukka has his own very unique style when playing what I love and admire. Years ago when I saw him playing I've been wearing also bandana in my head. Have a beautiful journey with Nightwish.

The singer is Floor Jansen. Her name is pronounced like the English word for the bottom of a room. She is from the Netherlands & her name is a reference to flowers. Her last name is pronounced "Yan-sin." She is 6 feet tall. Off stage, she is a wife, mother & humble girl next door that does her own grocery shopping. On stage, she looks & sounds like a Valkyrie, the Viking equivalent of an angel. For me, she comes across like a Valkyrie who is just pretending to be an ordinary woman singing in a band.

Welcome to Nightwish! What Gabriel said! Nightwish Army, Blue Mountains Corps, Australia. Nightwish since 1996. Your eyes, man, when you saw & heard Floor singing!.... Classic! 6- feet plus Valkyrie Queen Goddess!... and you aint seen nuthin yet! metal, growls, opera, rock, folk, pop - she sings what she wants!!!! The band - Tuomas ("two-oh-mass") on three lots of keys (composer, arranger, backing track controller, writer, some spfx triggers), Floor (just as it sounds - Dutch for "flower") on vocals, Jukka ("yoo-ka", the mad pirate, beatmaster) on drums and percussion, Marko (just as it sounds) on bass (long white hair and beard, called "Gandalf" by some and The Viking by others)- also a great singer and did post production on this video), Emppu ("em-poo", THE Electric Hobbit - he's only 5'3" but a black belt in judo!) on that purple rhythmn and lead guitar... and Troy (not on stage in this video) who can play pretty much everything "except hockey". Also, Villie Lipiainen on cinematography - imagine what he has not shown us yet!!!?.... that at the end is called a "Floorgasm!" literally jaw-dropping and fun to watch! New sub from Oz! G'day, mate! Owzitgoin? Looking forward to more Nightwish! One Million dollars bought the entire London Symphony Orchestra and London Metro Voices Choir - as well as some special guests - for the album and backing tracks!... Lot's more to love!

That's alright. I was the same way the first time I heard them. For some unknown reason, somebody actually played them on U.S. radio. I immediately sought them out, and they've been my favorite band ever since. I'm 76 and have seen many of the greats live. Nightwish tops them all.

The band has had three singers, Tarja, Anette and Floor. Tarja was the singer when the Once album was made, but the performance you just reacted to was our beloved Floor Jansen singing lead vocals. Floor is one of the best female vocalists in the world. She has trained in opera but only for one year, and she can sing in any style, Metal, Pop, Classical, Opera, Jazz and even Death Metal Growls 😂
This performance was at a Metal music festival in a small town in northern Germany called Wacken (pronounced Vah-ken). The flaming bulls head is the logo of the festival, not of the band

Welcome to the wonderful diverse world of Nightwish. UK Oldies Division of Nightwish army here as a new subscriber. Hope you'll keep on watching and listening. Especially their live recordings. I saw them live at Wembley in November 2022 and it was the most amazing experience. To hear more from them, I suggest you follow Gabriel's list or pick and mix from it. I have followed Nightwish for some time now and have just about every Nightwish recording, live and studio and not a single track I don't like. By the way you will get an even better experience if you use headphones. So much more you will absorb.

It is perfectly fine to pronounce the singers name Floor as the english word floor. Many are floored by her voice. Reactors are perfectly fine to use floorgasm for the eargasm they experience from her voice

Tarja (Tarya) was the original singer of Nightwish, but she had a falling out with the band. Lots of drama there, if you want a different kind of a rabbit-hole. lol Floor Jansen took over lead duties.
"Once" was the album that made me a fan of Nightwish. I was in my late teens at the time. I think Tarja's great, vocally, but Floor does at least as good of a job technically, and I think has more of that human element. Tarja is very classical, and by-the-book vocally (in my opinion). Can come off as synthetic, or melodramatic at times. Floor just nails it. The first time I heard this (the studio version is worth a listen too) it brought me to tears. Just such a great composition that's knocked out of the park with a great vocalist. Given the nostalgia of that first experience, I never get tired of this performance; so that's saying a lot.
Highly recommend checking out "Once", and other past Nightwish albums, as well as the recent ones. Stellar band, and Marco (the bassist) does amazing vocals/growls. Their albums are kind of like a dark Disney/fairy tale experience. They call this kind of metal either Symphonic Metal or Power Metal. I'd say Nightwish is about 80/20 on that ratio.
