Hello Thunder Rooster ! Nightwish fans here, your musical quest summoned us.
Welcome to the world of symphonic metal! And thank you for checking this legendary band, performing at Wacken Open Air in 2013, together with Floor Jansen, the 3rd and present female singer of the band, in front of an 82K+ audience.
About the instrumental and vocal added parts - it's good to know they recorded their orchestral and vocal back tracks with prestigious institutions as London Philharmonic Orchestra. London's The Metro Voices choir group and London's Young Musicians Children's Choir as their regular partners.
As I saw, you liked the powerful performance of the band. Hope you'll continue on this path.
Since this is your first Nightwish reaction, it is my duty to give you the [updated] short history of the band concentrated by Ann Waychoff, one of the biggest Nightwish fan who has since passed away (and I am doing this in her memory):
" Nightwish was started in 1996.They are considered a Symphonic Metal band, with a female main singer. They are from Finland.
Tuomas Holopainen, the keyboard player, composes and writes the lyrics for 95% of their music. [The 1st Bassist of the band was Sami Vanska, he was with them until 2001. The 2nd one was Marco Hietala, as Bassist and vocals, since 2001 to 2020. He recently announced his retirement both from the band and the public life for the next year at least - we'll see what the future brings to us. Then very recently (May 2021) Jukka Koskinen became the 3nd Bassist of the band, for at least the Human :II: Nature tour] And there is the guitarist Emppu Vuorinen . Then there is Troy Donockley from UK who is a multi-instrumentalist and vocals. Jukka Nevalainen is the drummer. In 2015 due to Jukka's health issues Kai Hahto became the drummer and as of now is a permanent addition.
Nightwish has had three singers. 1st one was Tarja Turunen (Operatic vocals). She was with them until 2005. The 2nd one was Anette Olzon from Sweden (Poppy, strong vocals). She was with them until 2012.The 3rd and current singer is Floor Jansen, from Netherlands (power, operatic, soprano.....most versatile) - you just heard her.
There are live concerts that you should use depending on what era. From Wishes to Eternity and End of an Era (Tarja), Montreux Festival live 2012 and Exit Festival (Anette), Live at Wacken 2013, Live at Wembley, Live at Tampere, Vehicle of Spirit, Decades live (Floor). I hope this helps.
I want to welcome you to the Nightwish community. I hope you like them enough to continue the journey. Believe me Nightwish will surprise you with their songs. You will never know what to expect. They are unbelievable live. I want to warn you that Nightwish fans are hard core. So be prepared. lol "
Hoping you'll continue this journey with us, I'll drop here a list of songs (with links) with the current lineup of the band you may like (please consider this list of links only as "a tip of the iceberg", an indication that they have a vast and very diverse repertoire, and not as something mandatory):

@Nightwish Arena: Since most of the reactors end up doing a lot of reactions from Wacken 2013 concert, they should be warned that there are a lot of slowed down and even high pitched versions of this concert, so it is better to use only official videos or this version of the whole concert: ua-cam.com/video/cAwtzi7Q3Bk/v-deo.html
Last but not the least - they released their 9th studio album on April 10th 2020 named "Human :||: Nature" - just take a peek to their official playlist: ua-cam.com/play/PLihZ3gi5Yvzc0pfH2cbNKUUX8o3pb8eVg.html (for example: "Shoemaker", the 3rd track from this album, tells the story of Eugene Shoemaker, one of the founders of planetary science, whose ash was sent on the Moon after his death, as a tribute from the scientific community ..)
The links presented above are with the current singer of the band, Floor Jansen, since I'm a fan of the recent era of the band, with Floor as the singer. That being said, I will add here the messages left the other days by some old fans of the band.
@Fabrizio Gorla: To be fair to the old fanbase, you may want to include also some of these songs.

Thank you for the catch up on the band. I very much appreciate learning about them. Very passionate fan base! This should be a fun rabbit hole to go down. I have not heard anything like them. The closest thing I could think of (in certain parts of this song) is Evanescence. Apparently saying that is a no no. Lol but that is all I know to compare what I just heard. I am looking forward to the diverse nature you have painted for the band. Thank you and I am sure I’ll see you in the comment section of our next NW reaction.

Evanescence is an alternative rock band, the final product of nu-metal evolution, along with Linkin Park. Symphonic metal relies more on traditional European metal, being a direct continuation of its evolution, with a strong influence of Hollywood symphonic soundtracks and European folk music.

One thing, there NEVER was an online battle between Tarja and Floor. In fact they are both friends. And the Album *Dark Passion Play* was with the 2nd Singer (between Tarja and Floor) Anette Olzon anyways. The beef was between Tarja and Tuomas (the keyboarder) about the End of their working relationship in 2005. There's no bad blood between Floor and Tarja, they are actually (good) friends, some NW fans want to compare the 3 singers though.
Also the base player left because of personal reasons, not because of anything else. No tinfoil hats needed.
This was more of the lighter side of NW, the have even more "poppy" songs and they have angry trashy songs like Dark passion play. Ghost love score is one of the big three though, but you have to dig really deep to find even just an average song from them.

    Great reaction! 👍🤘
Greetings from the UK! Info dump for you below!😁
Nightwish is a glorious rabbit hole of awesome, with world class song-writing, musicianship and arguably (or unarguably to most who've heard her enough😉) the best female vocalist alive today (maybe ever), the Valkyrie Queen of metal herself Floor Jansen (pronounced Yansen). Floor is a classically trained soprano and has a vocal range of more than 3 octaves (D3 to F6+).
Floor is the third female vocalist that Nightwish have had (and my personal favourite), she was only with them on tour for 10 months at this point and officially joined the band in 2013, she is still with them today.
    The other vocalists are -
Tarja Turunen - (1996-2005) - (Finland) - Very operatic focused vocals.
    Anette Olzon - (2007-2012) - (Sweden) - More pop-centric vocals.
Floor Jansen - (2012-Present) - (Netherlands) - Extremely diverse vocals, from deep growls to full on opera.
The other band members are/were -
Tuomas Holopainen - Song writer/composer and Keyboards. (Finland)
Marko Hietala - Bassist and vocals. (Finland)
    Emppu Vuorinen - Guitarist (Finland)
Jukka Nevalainen - Drums (Finland) Retired in 2014 due to health issues
Troy Donockley - Multi-instrumentalist and Vocals. (United Kingdom)
Kai Hahto - Drums (Finland) - 2014 to Present
Floor herself is Dutch and is another glorious goldmine of awesome as she has a lot of non-Nightwish related stuff (including 2 other bands, After Forever & ReVamp) that she has done that is all pretty amazing as well. She is also an absolutely lovely, funny, smart and grounded person (in fact all the band members are exceedingly down to earth individuals). She has her own channel here on UA-cam where she regularly posts covers of songs.
The band was formed in 1996 by lead songwriter/composer and keyboardist Tuomas Holopainen.
The name of the genre they generally belong to is Symphonic Metal but their discography is extremely varied.
The "Symphonic" backing tracks of their music is composed in the majority by Tuomas and performed by the London Philharmonic Orchestra.
This was the 13th song in this particular set, Floor is belting notes like that the entire set.
Nighwish are almost always better experienced with live versions of their songs if at all possible.
Most new reactors are better off sticking with the Wacken 2013 set to begin with as it offers a taste of a lot of what Nightwish has to offer, they have multiple concerts though all of which are superb.
Some suggestions for more songs for you to continue your journey would be Romanticide, Storytime, Ghost River, I Wish I had an Angel, Song of Myself, Ever Dream, Dark Chest of Wonders, I Want My Tears Back and Amaranth all from Wacken 2013 (pronounced Vacken).
Saying that, anything from Wacken 2013 is golden really to start, there's a reason why that set is pretty legendary at this point, 82,000 people were in attendance.
Beware of some messed up slowed down versions of the Wacken 2013 songs as they can take the energy right out of the performances, just check the comments on them and I'm sure someone will mention if it's a slowed down version.
Your choice obviously but I'd avoid Poet and the Pendulum and The Greatest Show on Earth for now until you are more familiar with the band and it's history, they will make a lot more sense and be more enjoyable for you that way.
Prepare for the Nightwish army to arrive and enjoy your Nightwish journey, I know I did!😎🤘

I have decided that the inevitable evanescence comparison by American reactors is well, inevitable. It’s the closest thing they can find and people do like to make connections like that. It’s certainly not meant as an insult and it’s not insulting to either party and in fact it’s a great compliment to evanescence. It’s always bothered me but I’m going to get over it. It’s OK. And it’s OK not to like this song. and it’s OK not to be floored so to speak. To each their own. I admit it is disappointing when people are not awed and amazed by this performance but it is what it is. Next reactor please!

    • @bkeyser
      @bkeyser 2 роки тому +4

@@maurenegarza6427 Yeah, I think the Amy Lee comparisons are as much based on appearance as the vocals, especially since the music itself is so different. Doesn't bother me either; people naturally compare to things they've seen.
With this type of reaction, you pretty already know there won't be other NW vids to follow. It's a shame but I think GLS is probably not the song to start with for people who have less appreciation for the composition and just want some genre of metal. Romanticide or Yours is an Empty Hope would be a better starting point for them.
But of course, to each his own. My comment wasn't a knock on the reactors; you can only feel what you feel and I'd rather see a genuine reaction than a fake one. But knowing the Army, some of those comments are likely to draw some thumbs down.

    • @ThunderRooster
      @ThunderRooster  2 роки тому +9

It was an honest reaction. Paul (the one with hair) has heard of their older stuff so that probably dulled down his reaction. And I had no idea what I was getting into. Despite what many May think, we are doing more NW. I think they are very talented and I mean that. And I can see that they have a very dedicated army of a fan base. We will take the thumbs down if that is what people really feel. But we will never fake a reaction. Myself (the bald guy) a musician, was taking in all of the arrangements, riffs, rhythms, and vocal colorings. I think this was a great song to start on. I have a feeling I am going to be very surprised by the next one we do. Thank you for your comments and have a great week!

    • @bkeyser
      @bkeyser 2 роки тому +2

@@ThunderRooster Appreciate your response. I indicated to another commenter that my comment above was not a knock on your reaction. I'm a NW fan, and frequenting the reactor circuit - heh - I've seen the responses reactors get from the Army regarding certain comments made by the reactors. Amy Lee usually draws a groan, and I do think that if you're not ready and already a fan of symphonic metal, GLS can really throw you off. It did me, the first time I heard it. I grew up on Maiden, Priest, Triumph, VH, etc. in the late 70's early 80's, so it was a shock seeing a front woman that wasn't Joan Jett. What I came to love about them is the maturity of the music and the magnificence of the writing/composition.
So I hope you do more NW, and I'll be on the lookout for it. You'll find that unlike most bands, NW music covers a broad spectrum and rarely do two songs sound alike. You'll get similarities and patterns across songs, but The Islander and Planet Hell are miles apart.
Again, thanks for taking the time to respond and I hope you didn't take offense to my initial comment as none was intended. I was careful to say "This started off" since it seemed clear that once past the initial shock of Floor's first lines, you did seem to start to settle in a bit. NOT and uncommon reaction, and one that made it clear to me yours was genuine. Still, I do think a 10-minute piece that is truly a score is a tough introduction for someone who isn't familiar with the genre or expecting something different.
Take care, and I hope to see you guys again in another vid soon.

Evanscene founded in 1995 and Nightwish in 1996... BUT Nightwish had their breakthrough in 2000 with the album Wishmaster and singer Tanja Turunen and Evanescene in 2003 with the album Fallen.
If you really want to know what "Wacken" means, I recommend you "Blind Guardian - The Bard's Song & Valhalla - Live at Wacken Open Air 2016" - goose bumps guaranteed. And if you want to know more about the basis of the music of Nightwish - then I recommend you "Theatre of Tradegy" founded in 1993 and breakthrough in 1994 with "Tanz der Schatten" - yes, they sing there in German, they are just Norwegians who didn't speak a word of German at that time but that's just how it is... "a rose for the dead" or "cassandra" also belong to the early successes of ToT. By the way, the singer Liv Kristine is still active, solo and with her band "Leaves Eyes" - here I would recommend "LEAVES' EYES - Blazing Waters (2021) // Official Music Video // AFM Records" as a nice start ;)

@@ThunderRooster Yes, this is absolutely possible and not unlikely. However, it is very likely that both have their inspirations from the pioneers of symphonic metal, from Germany it was mainly "Lacrimosa", which in the early 1990s incorporated more and more classical elements in its music (Fun Fact: In Mexican schoolbooks, among others, lyrics by Lacrimosa are next to Goethe, Schiller.... so that the students can learn German). I would recommend "Lacrimosa Stolzes Herz HD Video Official" watch?v=M5Q6L5ldtRo or "Lacrimosa - Ich bin der brennende Komet (Live)" watch?v=jXM5M1uu0w - a recording from 2007 in Hong Kong. On the Nordic side there are especially the Swedes of "Therion", who developed this style around the same time, with more focus on metal - especially to mention is e.g. "THERION - To Mega Therion (OFFICIAL MUSIC VIDEO)" watch?v=2ZQ0BsNi24A - of course there are also groups like Blind Guardian (video I already suggested), Within Tempation, Paradise Lost or also Haggard, who either had strong influence on this music or just released Opera Metal very early.
And I hope that my English is understandable, it's been a few decades that I learned it in school and so often you do not use it in Germany ;)

Private Marshall Nightwish Army reporting for duty. Glad you enjoyed it Thunder Rooster. There is so much more. This entire concert can be reacted to from the beginning, one song at a time. There are no bad songs and each one you hear will become your new favorite. That might sound ridiculous but we have seen it over and over again. This is a live band. This is a rarity that the live music is better than the engineered versions. Stick with live.
I see General Gabriel has arrived to give you a road map and a history to help you on this most magical of journeys. A few of my suggestions outside of this concert venue, Yours is an empty Hope, Wembley. (The cruise ship video is not as good) How's the heart, Planet Rock Acoustic version and I want my tears back, Buenos Aires Argentina.
Liked your comments and visual/Audio presentation. Welcome to the world of Nightwish.

Most of the time this band is about really diving into the depths of music and poetry, it´s about finding beautiful melodies and emotions. That´s why so many people love them. But they can get harsh as f..., too. But overall they are real artists. Every member plays exactly the part he is supposed to play, not more, not less, just enough, what the particular song needs. Tuomas, the composer (keyboard player), always mixes the right recipe.

about 60% of their music is heavier than this song, if you want something heavier. But Romanticide is an easy one to suggest. Yours is an Empty Hope, Ghost River, Dark Chest of Wonder, Shudder Before the Beautiful all are heavier also.

I think this was a great reaction !! You’re like little boys in church, you can’t focus on it if you don’t care about the sermon! well, we have no doubt that that situation will change, if you just manage to stay on the horse and you will ride vith us an interesting journey to the last stop in the world. To the finnish soul landscape. The journey is long and very heavy, but you can bring one wish with you... Your own personal nightly wish, keep on it, boys!👍👍

Nightwish and Evanescence start at the same time in 1996. If you like more harder songs than do "Song of myself", "Romanticide", "Last ride of the day" (this 3 from Wacken '13), "Slaying the dreamer" (Buenos Aires '19), "Shudder bevore the beautiful", "The poet and the pendulum" (this 2 Wembley '15) and many more, or in a little keltic/folk metal style than you could do "I want my tears back" (Buenos Aires 19) or "My Walden" (Tampere '15 ) and some more. Bye

Both Nightwish and Evanescence started mid 1990s. But Nightwish with Floor Jansen has a much wider spectrum of musical styles and sounds. Follow what Gabriel suggests and you won't go far wrong. For something heavy try Romanticide at this concert.

Floor is a very versatile vocalist and a vocal coach. She does have operatic training but she can also growl (like real deep as hell death metal growl). You can hear yourself by checking "Yours Is An Empty Hope" (live at Wembley 2015). The other two songs that can possibly interest you are Romanticied (faster and heavier than "Ghost Love Score") and Pink Floyd's cover "High Hopes" (absolutely brilliant interpretation).

You guys seemed not only genuine, but also insightful! That bit of comparison with delivery from Freddy Mercury was very apt. While the reaction was more on the "chill" side, there was no doubt about you getting into the music and the delivery. A raise of eyebrows or a grin oftentimes speaks more than all the habitual gasping and falling off the chair (which is moreover easy to detect when it's fake ;)).
Also for someone into harder music, NIGHTWISH and the whole symphonic sub-genre might sound a bit strained or over the top, depending where one is coming from. Still there is an immense palette of emotions contained within, along with some very heavy memorable stuff, that it might draw you in if you're not careful! NIGHTWISH is usually really poetic in the way they present their songs. You might also want to take a look at a band in the same genre, but a lot heavier with a nice use of the choir - EPICA. They have attitude and aggressiveness in spades, while also playing with most tender of sounds and varied influences. "Design Your Universe" (my personal fave rendition) or "Sancta Terra" (feat. someone you know) from the "Retrospect" show can be recommended to start, although there might be even better options ahead!
Another great band to check out would be THERION - basically a Metal opera style with multiple and varied vocals. The added spice is that the fathers of the band took it from Death metal roots all the way to being classically inspired multi-player show. Almost any song from their classical albums like "Theli" or "Secrets of the Runes" would introduce a listener nicely into the concept. Just bear in mind that THERION especially can have a really wide variation in style from song to song, so it is hard / inadvisable to form opinion on them after a track or two. Worth a try though!

This band is one of the great bands in this genre but with faster rifs and more death metal influences than Nightwish. Simone Simons is one of the great Dutch singers in this genre just like Floor Jansen, Aneke van Giersbergen, Sharon den Adel and Charlotte Wessels. A good starter for an Epica 'rabbithole' would be the songs 'Consign to Oblivion' and 'Essence of Silence'.
