Hi Steve, thanks for the kind words! So I have only used my electronic drum kit live once or twice, and that was back when I had my jobeky set up (so years ago!) hi there! i’m a beginning drummer, but having some issues with recording it (so this vid was a gift from heaven). I was wondering what DAW you use, and if the program audicity works? anyways, lots of support cause it was really helpful (:
Dude... Many interfaces are made with midi in/out. Using a USB midi cable is a horrible idea. The interface isn't just a fancy place to plugin your headphones. It also facilitates low latency playback while tracking, gives you outputs to connect monitor speakers and it gives you mic pre's and Hi-Z inputs to record vocals, guitar, bass, keyboards, whatever. For all those looking for info on a setup, buy an interface with midi in/out. Don't waste money on a mid to USB cable. You can add more to the system later on in the form of: studio monitor speakers (you can buy them 1 at a time), monitoring headphones for tracking (DT770's are a good choice), a microphone, etc.
@@theradiantchild There are many sophisticated videos on the different options that do a better job than my opinions. However, I own and use these regularly: - Behringer umc404hd (great budget option) - Focusrite Scarlett 2i4 (great mid range option and sturdy) - Roland Studio Capture (great large/world class option) Other mentions would be: - RME (a leading brand, but pricey) - UAD Apollo (same as RME) Other Presonus, Steinberg, Roland, etc branded interfaces will do roughly the same thing - although, M-Audio get a bad wrap - but the design aspects will be slighlty different. For example: the Presonus iOne has a notched volume and gain knob that drives me nuts, but Focusrite knivs are smooth as butter. Software may also be more/less cumbersome across devices. The most important aspects are the features you need. If you may use midi drums/keys/etc in future, get a midi input. If you plan to reamp, you may need more than 2 outputs - one to send audio. You may record guitars with plugins, which would require Hi-z inputs. You may record vocals and need better quality preamps - although I personally believe this to be myth because most people don't overdrive their pre's to utilise the particular pre's character. If you are mobile, you may want an aluminum case. Lot's of options that a unique to each usage. Knowing your needs is crucial and not skimping when the time comes to buy us a good plan.
great video! i've been using logic pro and sd3 for drums covers, i dont have a scarlett but a usb dac and i wanted to know if you have a SD3 multi out preset in logic that sounds great that you could share! thanks!
Hey Josh, a big reason I would want to set something up like this is to improve the drum sound quality not only in a recording, but as I play live (in my room using headphones). By using a VST and listening to the input through my computer, is this something I can feasibly use to have great sound on my drums while playing them? Or would latency be too much of an issue and this technology is only used in the recording itself? Thanks for the video!
Hi Lucas and thanks for your comment. The VST will 100% give you a better drum sound with minimal lag. Ever since I was introduced to the world of VST's, I stopped using the internal module sounds all together... even when I was just practicing. It's one of those things that when you're introduced to it, your entire world changes!
Does this method use the sounds that are with the Roland kit? Or does it use Logics kit sounds? I really want to just use the actual sounds from my Roland device as they’re much better.
Just picked up my first electric kit today. I'm going to use this process for recording but how am I able to listen to the song I want to play along to and record at the same time? Looking to do this for drum covers.
Hi Dan, thanks for your comment and I’m glad you found this video helpful. The in ear monitors I use are the Shure Se215’s. Super cheap, universal fit and great sound :)
@@JoshCameron Thanks for your reply! I own a pair of SE215’s, however I barely get any low end from them when monitoring my Roland TD30 - they just sound really tinny. Do you ever have this problem?
Any tips for people who have windows? this video was great but I'm not able to get Logic Pro. I've pretty much discovered that if you want to get into recording apple is the way to go lol
Thank you for the video. What i understand is that we can get various drum sounds from Superior Drums. How can we get the sounds of the inbuilt drum kits of the actual module of E Drums in our DAW as multi tracks?
Hi there, thank you for your comment! I'm not actually too sure how you do that one. It would depend on the number of outputs you have on the back of the module I believe!
This can be tricky without individual outputs, but not impossible!... What you can do is record the MIDI into your DAW and then playback each drum track in solo and simultaneously record the drum module audio output - for example, record a performance so that you have it in MIDI then create a stereo audio input... Solo your first drum track in your DAW, i.e the kick. When you play this kick, you can route it to play back on your drum module, like you would a synthesizer sound module - then just record the module output in real time and repeat for each drum/cymbal!
I too would like to record the midi info but hear my module's sounds. So far demonic sweater's example of recording both midi and audio at the same time is as close as I've seen. But I wonder if importing samples from module to laptop is going to be the ultimate answer.
Hey Josh, is it necessary to manually add all those mixers channels? is there a better way to do it? in my SD3 preset there are SO many mixer channels.
How would I record an electronic kit if I want to record with MIDI but also the kit's own sounds, separated by track, e.g., kick, snare, toms on their own channel. The Alesis Strike Pro SE has separate outputs for all of the various triggers. Thanks!
Can i use HP ElitePad 1000 G2 Tablet for VST ezdrummer and record? This tablet needs usb Adapter, is there possible to be any lag because of HP usb adapter? Nice video!
Hey Josh - thanks for the video! With your DAW/Superior Drummer setup, is there any noticeable latency when playing, between when you hit the drum and when you hear the sample?
No latency at all! Bearing in mind latency comes down to the module you’re using as well. Roland modules have the lowest latency on the market I believe 👍🏻
Is it better to record directly from the brain td27 via usb on the pc or to record with the sound card (M audio) by connecting the brain td27 with two jack cables (left, right) from the main out to the sound card line1, line 2 and from the sound card via usb to the pc? What do you suggest;
Hey, just wondering how I can rename the track from 'Kick In' without it changing the first channel in the Logic mixer. Also, what are Small Room/0.4s Snare Chamber and Large Hall/3.9s Prince Hall One and can I get rid of them? Thanks
Hey! Is there a way to monitor a Logic drum set VST by using an Alesis drum amp instead of monitoring what I'm playing through headphones? That would be cool if that's possible! I just want to be able to hear the VST sounds in the room using the amp instead of the module sounds of the Alesis kit. Thanks a lot! :)
I have trouble recording my Roland TD on Garageband to make it sound smooth. What is the best mixing for it?I use Focusritr too. I have a Yamaha MX20 and I use Garageband
Hi Josh. I just had the thought. Would the midi notes have different volumes if I was to record directly from the module? I just found the cymbals on the mt powerdrumkit program i used were a bit quiet. I started to think I was better off recording straight from the td50 module
Great video! Are you able to individually export each microphone as a separate audio file if sending for an online session? Like you would if recording an acoustic kit with mics through an interface. Thanks!
Hey Josh! this is probably a stupid question but here it goes. When recording a cover, can I simply play a song using Spotify onto the DAW which will then record it?
Hi James, thanks for your comment and for watching this vid! You'd need to download the track first and then import into your DAW - best way to do it really is via a UA-cam to Mp3 conversion website and just pull it off UA-cam - hope this helps!
i have a roland td17kvx and i do video recordings through the roland go mixer pro x console with a camera from my smartphone. Is it worth the effort and the cost to make video recordings via sound card, pc midi? Or should I continue with the Roland go mixer pro x?
I don't have the usb thing in my drums so I can directly plug it into my computer, I am getting sound a signal while going with an tele- cabel ( telecommunication cable) don't know what it's called in english. My problem is that everythings seem fine but it is recording everything instead of just the drums, so when i play the drums the guitar is in the same track for example.
When I record threw cords. I play with headphones on. Which helps to dock and drown out the outside distraction. But when I listen to the recording I hear the sound of the sticks hitting the pads.
I’m stuck for some reason. I have the USB AB cable to connected to my module and my computer, I’m pretty sure I have my module driver downloaded (Alesis is weird), and I’m using audacity. I can get any audio from my module to playback on my computer
The #1 thing I hate about triggering sounds with electronic drums ? IS the moment you do it, you loose the multi trigger sounds and it takes you back to single zone sounding and feeling drums. Very annoying. Somehow this needs to be fixed or it will never be as useful as acoustics.
I get what you mean, and I agree with you there. Sometimes you lose that layer of realism when using the kit in this way, but for the most part i'm able to do what I want with it!
Hoping someone can help me troubleshoot a problem I'm having recording midi drums from my kit - but this video is 2 years old (and Josh has apparently moved on to a different hobby), so it's not likely anyone will read this... First, my setup: I am using an A2E kit (acoustic kit converted to electronic - Gretsch Catalina with Jobeky internal side mount dual triggers and Remo Silentstroke mesh heads) with the Alesis Strike module - midi out to a Focusrite Scarlett 1818 and Superior Drummer 3 in Studio One DAW. When I record midi into the DAW's timeline, I see several extra midi notes of lower velocity following the initial strike on the track These notes only appear on the snare and floor tom (rack tom and kick seem to react just fine) and are likely due to vibrations of the head. I have the mesh heads pitched pretty tight and even used some gaffing tape to subdue overtones, but I still get the (almost inaudible) multiple strikes. I have the retrigger and threshold settings adjusted properly in the Strike module to allow for realistic playing and cannot reduce them much more without sacrificing playability. Is it the single ply mesh heads causing the issue? Has anyone experienced a similar problem and found a solution?
Recorded it this way, so it keeps the midi all in one line on the DAW? or do they also split? I tried this way by recording midi first, then multichannel the plugin and have a second bout of recording with the audio coming out un multi channels. but maybe keeping all midi info is better. . .
I have a td-11 and I plug it into the laptop via USB and I'm using ableton. I don't currently have a vst but even just trying to play with the modual sounds the latency and misfire is insane. It's like it's lagging badly and doesn't pick up all the notes I play. Could it be an improper driver? I cannot figure it out!
Great video - lots of details, thanks! I want to be able to record from my TD11 into GarageBand on an iPad; I’ve seen videos of people connecting straight in with the camera connector but when I try that I don’t get the drums triggering any sounds. Can you tell me how to do this? I like the mobility of recording on the iPad and mixing on my Mac afterwards.
Hi Scott, thank you for the kind words! Unfortunately I can't help you here; never done this myself! However my buddy over at 65 Drums should be able to help - check out his channel!
Josh, thanks for doing a video like this. Quick one: does a MIDI cable work the same as a USB cable? My interface has both options, so I'm just curious if there are any advantages to using either cable.
Hi Jay, thanks for the comment and sincerest apologies for the delay in responding to your question. I’ve messed with usb cables and midi cables before.... your best bet is a USB/printer cable if possible. It just seems to work straight away without no messing around and gives more consistent results (from my experiences at least!)
Midi cables give you better chance at synchronization considering you can accept MTC directly into the DAW and use a vst plugin I'm the software for the drums.
I have a DD400+ drum module would that work? I cant find how to download so it would pick up the signal like you did with the Roland or do I not need to download anything other than a DAW. Thanks
Hey Daniel , thanks for your comment and sincerest apologies for the delay in responding to your question.... unfortunately I wouldn’t be able to help there. The manufacturers website should have all available drivers listed under “updates and drivers” however the DD400+ module isn’t from one of the bigger brands so I wouldn’t be sure how it would work for that one. Sorry about that!
Hello Josh, Thanks for your video, I am running a TD30 via USB into my macbook pro and using logic and superior drummer 3 and are having some latency issues, would this be to due with me having only 8gb of ram ? or does the TD30 need to go into a interface via MIDI cable and then have a thunderbolt cable in to the macbook ? Thanks for any advise.
Hey! Thanks for the comment - sorry for the delay in getting back to you on this, ... did you manage to solve the issue? I’m not sure why you’re experiencing latency issues to be honest.... from what you have described everything should be working just fine. 8GB of Ram should suffice!
Hello @Mollerice you have to download a driver called ASIO4ALL and when you plug the usb for your drums, go to the audio settings for the logic then set the audio input to asio and set the samples to 64

Hi , great video. I have a Yamaha dtx400 kit and Focusrite 2i2. I ran a 1/8 inch to 1/4 cable from the DTX module to the input on the front of the 2i2 and then connected the 2i2 directly into my laptop and also changed my laptop sounds settings so the sound comes through my headphones which are connected to the headphone port on the 2i2. Other Presonus, Steinberg, Roland, etc branded interfaces will do roughly the same thing - although, M-Audio get a bad wrap - but the design aspects will be slighlty different.
Hi Josh, really useful video. Just interested to know what in ear monitors you use. Are they custom fit or universal? Thanks!
Do you ever have this problem?
do you have a video on how to make a cover song using this methods?
Unfortunately not!
@@JoshCameron ok. I hope you consider making one that would be a lot of help thanks
Awesome video man !!! Super helpful. With recording e drums this way, does every hit mark as a midi note that can be quantized ?
Yeah you can easily quantise your playing if it’s midi :)
Thanks this is very helpful! What hi hat are you using and do you like it?
I am using the VH-13 and I LOVE IT! Possibly the best e hi-hat out there :D
Hi Josh! I got a question, what Roland Module do you use?
So if your say using a Sony Camera to record the video how are you getting matching audio to it to match up the video to the Audio from the DAW?
Hey Josh, is it necessary to manually add all those mixers channels? is there a better way to do it? in my SD3 preset there are SO many mixer channels.
How would I record an electronic kit if I want to record with MIDI but also the kit's own sounds, separated by track, e.g., kick, snare, toms on their own channel. The Alesis Strike Pro SE has separate outputs for all of the various triggers. Thanks!
Great video! - i was wondering if it’s possible to connect an SPD-SX Roland sampling pad, to go with the recording of the Electric drum kit?
You can run an SPD as a separate audio or midi instrument in your DAW :D
Can i use HP ElitePad 1000 G2 Tablet for VST ezdrummer and record?
This tablet needs usb Adapter, is there possible to be any lag because of HP usb adapter?
Nice video!
Love the instructions
Thank you !
@@JoshCameron awesome, thank you Josh! :-)
Is it better to record directly from the brain td27 via usb on the pc or to record with the sound card (M audio) by connecting the brain td27 with two jack cables (left, right) from the main out to the sound card line1, line 2 and from the sound card via usb to the pc? What do you suggest;
I can get my drums from the midi to the pro tools, but it has no sound. Is this because I don’t have a vst?
What would you recommend if a drum kit didn’t have a usb outlet?
I have trouble recording my Roland TD on Garageband to make it sound smooth. What is the best mixing for it?I use Focusritr too. I have a Yamaha MX20 and I use Garageband
Really great tutorial here!
Thanks Eric!
Hi Josh. I just had the thought. Would the midi notes have different volumes if I was to record directly from the module? I just found the cymbals on the mt powerdrumkit program i used were a bit quiet. I started to think I was better off recording straight from the td50 module
You can always change the volume of each sound you’re triggering inside the VST software!
Great video! Are you able to individually export each microphone as a separate audio file if sending for an online session? Like you would if recording an acoustic kit with mics through an interface. Thanks!
I'm pretty sure you could do that if you assigned each mic to it's own separate track inside of the recording software you choose to use!
@@JoshCameron thanks, how would I do that?
I'm using Logic and SD3, thanks again.
Hey Josh! this is probably a stupid question but here it goes.
Love these kinds of videos. Would this be possible to do with a Scarlett Solo? Not a 2i2 that you have.
i was wondering the same dude.. @joshcameron
@wordbearer did you find it out bro?
Hey! Yes It would! The solo should work absolutely fine :)
Nice! Thanks!
Thanks to you as well for watching!
Josh are you still drumming? Lets rock it bro!
Nah not anymore unfortunately!
@@JoshCameron all good mate. :)
When I record threw cords. I play with headphones on. Which helps to dock and drown out the outside distraction. But when I listen to the recording I hear the sound of the sticks hitting the pads.
Are you layering video over it? Maybe it’s the audio from the video recording?
Recording all to midi channel 10 or each part to separate midi channels? Thx.
And how does the recording works if I don´t want to use any VST?
I’m stuck for some reason. I have the USB AB cable to connected to my module and my computer, I’m pretty sure I have my module driver downloaded (Alesis is weird), and I’m using audacity. I can get any audio from my module to playback on my computer
That's great
Can I do this with Roland td-1dmk?
P.S- Can't afford a Interface
You have a Roland td-1dmk but can't afford an interface?
Hey Josh, how come you selected multi output over stereo for superior drummer? Is it better? I believe you explained it in the video
ive got a elesis e drum so i just need to instal the drive and im good to go ? sweet thanks
Got a question, at the end of the video it shows a single track reflecting the entire drumkit, can you not have each drum separate?
About pluging your headphones to the audio interface, for the shure se215 do they need that extra amp or any average laptop could handle them?
In my Roland kit module the drums sound different from the drumkit i hit on pc. What gives? I followed your instructions
When I record midi into the DAW's timeline, I see several extra midi notes of lower velocity following the initial strike on the track
These notes only appear on the snare and floor tom (rack tom and kick seem to react just fine) and are likely due to vibrations of the head.
Has anyone experienced a similar problem and found a solution?
what usb audio interface do you use? I have a td12 and im looking for a low latency interface to trigger my VST.
I use the focusrite Scarlett 2i2... Really affordable and has never missed a beat!
Same but garage band I gave up years ago and am trying to come back to it and it’s STILL a headache 😂
I need help.
I have 2 e-drums : millenium mps 150 and 750 but i cant find on the web where to download the driver as you did with yout roland tdk30
Thank you for your response, that’s okay no worries 😌
3 years later, already did everything, my drum doesnt sound when i play it ;(
Thank you, young man; most helpful 🙂
Hi Josh can I do this same thing with Garage band and superior drummer instead of Logic Pro?
Are the drumtec heads any better than the stock heads?
Can I use my module's sounds through the recorded midi track?
Hello Josh,
Thanks for your video,
I am running a TD30 via USB into my macbook pro and using logic and superior drummer 3 and are having some latency issues, would this be to due with me having only 8gb of ram ? or does the TD30 need to go into a interface via MIDI cable and then have a thunderbolt cable in to the macbook ?
Thanks for any advise.
Hey! Thanks for the comment - sorry for the delay in getting back to you on this, ... did you manage to solve the issue?
I’m not sure why you’re experiencing latency issues to be honest.... from what you have described everything should be working just fine. 8GB of Ram should suffice!
Hello @Mollerice you have to download a driver called ASIO4ALL and when you plug the usb for your drums, go to the audio settings for the logic then set the audio input to asio and set the samples to 64
Mine is going different right about where you reset the track I don’t have that. And then I found au in the plug ins but then it’s different again at the toon part mine only has Apple
All seams to be working except I have no sound from my snare. All other pads are working. Do you know what the problem might be.
