Hey. I just wanted to let you know, that I've been recording drum covers for a while and I have been using my tablet to record the drum covers and have been using a speaker to get the sound out. I've tried to find ways to make my videos better and ways to get the sound better. After I watched this video I ended up buying that iRig device. Just got it today and decided to give it a try. I plugged the iRig into my phone, plugged the guitar cable into iRig and into the drum module and plugged the aux cable to the iRig then to the drum module. Turned my camera on and pressed record. After I tested it out, I watched the recording and it worked. I couldn't be any happier because I found a way to make my drum covers better. I already recorded a drum cover with the device today as well. That being said, I want to thank you for introducing me into this idea. If it wasn't for you and this video, I wouldn't have known about iRig. So thank you again.
Chester's Channel hello sir, do you know how to hear the drum sound while recording? I’m confused because the output is plugged with the guitar cable that connects to the iRig, thanks in advance
I have just bought a yamaha dtx522k and have played for 4 hours straight!!!! So happy, very nice quality drum kit and really like the features. WORTH IT! I only have to buy a good amplifie when i want to play with friends. I really wanted to thank you because I did a LOT of reaserch before buying an electronic drum set and i mostly got info from your videos, you really helped me a lot.
I'm just now starting my drum journey and I know you posted this five or so years ago, but this is still super helpful. You did a great job of explaining, but also the encouragement I really appreciate! You definitely broke things down and calmed the intimidation factor on my end, for sure. Thank you so much for this!
A tip for making sync easier: play some audio out from your module so your camera mic picks it up, then you have an audio reference for syncronising audio from the module direct feed and camera.
If you record the midi and use the monitors instead of headphones the camera mic willl pick it up and you will have to sources to play with. Some people have a reamp that outputs to an ampliier which is mic'ed up to the interface. All kinds of ways you can do it.
BLESSSSS YOU! i’ve been trying to figure out how to record drums using my irig 2 and this was perfect. every other video i’ve watched doesn’t mention any methods using the irig
Just FYI: You can use an interface (like the Focusrite Scarlet you were showing) with iOS devices, as well. You just need the appropriate USB Camera Connection kit (lightning or 30-pin), and a powered USB hub. Plug interface into the powered USB hub, connect the "output" of the hub into the camera connection kit, plug that into the iOS device.
I always set up about 3 cameras when I’m shooting drum covers. I use software called Pluraleyes that syncs all the tracks using the reference audio and master audio. In Final Cut Pro I just delete the reference audio after the sync is completed. That whole process takes less than 5 minutes. I can have a video up on UA-cam a short time after that. It doesn’t take long at all. You offered some good tips. I had not thought about going right into my camera. I have a Sony A7iii and will try that next time.I also just picked up the iRig HD 2 so I can quickly post to social media a good sound coming from the Roland TD 11. The latest craze is folks doing “Duets” on Tik Tok and I want to have a good sound for doing those as well.
THANK YOU SOOOOO MUCH!!!!!!!!!! The time you put into making this is very much appreciated!!!!!! YOUR AWESOME!!!!😱👍😁😎😆 You my friend have earned a new SUBSCRIBER!!!!!
Great, informative video Justin. Might I add one note: Invest in some lights. They don't have to be expensive. Some budget, Chinese-made LED lights or soft boxes with stands. It'll make any video - cell phone or DSLR - much, much better. Most of us are making drum covers in a bedroom where lighting is pretty poor. Some strategically placed lights make all the difference
Justin this is GREAT video! It is packed with information that will save us time and aggravation. The only thing you did not mentioned is how you position your camera for the correct angle and what kind of stand or tripod setting you use.
Thanks for the info on iRig as a first time easy way digital drum record. Now I'm going with a USB interface. Thanks for the great infor! Made my covers easy to start uploading on FB
Thanks for the video. It was something I was wondering about. The Rockband idea is really good to know. One other benefit of those tracks are most of them are master tracks, so you’re actually playing along with musicians you may be a big fan of. Awesome sauce! I’m still stuck using a TD-3 for the time being, so you won’t be seeing any cover songs from me anytime soon. 8) You keep making videos and I’ll keep watching. Thanks again.
I know it is cause of you that I found out about asio4all this helps!! But all the programs I use like I have said many times are all freeware and I use a midi to usb interface!! As always great information!!
Thanks man I used the irig method but I used an aux cord to plug into the module from a different device (Apple doesn’t let you play music and record) and it recorded everything already synced and it sounds great
Thank you thank you thank you.!!! I have been researching for days trying to find a more in depth explanation on how to record electronic drums this is great.!!!!!! 😁
I have a roland td-17kvx and I bought irig2 for my android phone to record video and audio, I couldn't record the sound in the video but I downloaded the cinemafv you said and it works perfect.. Thank you
Great video Justin. I use a TD12,midi to usb interface straight into my iMac triggering SD3 on an A2E converted Mapex Mars. Videos I use the GoPro hero 4 and combine it all in iMovie. iMovie is really easy to sync audio and video. Love the channel and all the info you put out there.
Another great video. Surprised you never mentioned any of the Zoom products. Great studio audio with HD video - all in one. Absolutely one of the best products for the money. The H2Q is amazing and simple to use. Thanks Justin.
Mark Blake I was thinking the same thing bro. I have a Q8 and I love it. Maybe he just didn't have much personal experience with Zoom equipment?? Just throwing a guess out there.
Also, the Zoom Q8 camera is _incredible_ for this kind of thing -- 2 XLR inputs with preamps, and you can actually expand it to 4 XLR inputs with a separate input cartridge (EXH-6). The camera quality definitely isn't SLR, but it's GoPro quality for sure, but with MUCH better sound.
As usual @65drums makes the most informative videos answering all the basic questions in one go! Keep it up Justin! Still not sure how to sinc multiple cameras into one LIVE STREAM, I guess the only way is to use the Roland mixer to get the audio, but still that only covers one camera from my iPhone.
Justin, thx! I've watched sooo many dam n videos on recording edrums for not! Literally 10 minutes after watching yours bro, I recorded my 1st test cover video using my DSLR Fujifilm camera. Perfect! I have the Alesis DM10 Pro kit and then Movie Maker on my CPU to edit. Your videos are awesome.... keep making them!
Again loving this channel ! Anyway, Android users - like me (couldn't afford an IPhone) well i tried the iRig on 5 of those different android phones (my mom's, my dad's, my sis's, ......well u get the idea). ....and it didn't work at all. Ya so, i downloaded a 3rd party application like Cinema FV-5 (which doesn't have a flip-to-front cam but has a volume monitoring before recording function) and so i downloaded another 3rd party application call Camera MX (which have a flip-to-front cam but doesn't have a volume monitor before recording function)...well, u win some, u loose some right? but works well with me for having both apps at the same time running it with Androids :) Do set the mic to "external mic" for both apps.
Nice overview & great idea to cover. This will help a lot of people. Two notes though. 1. When you mention Laptops, you should talk about different ways, because with MacBooks you don’t need ASIO and you don’t have latency issues. 2. I don’t think you should recommend anything that limits creativity. UA-cam is not always about just uploading a lot of stuff. As a musician, it’s about expressing yourself. You don’t go to your rehearsal room, play one song and then go home again either, do you? ;)
When covering so many things I knew I wouldn’t get every single tip in the video so thank you for bringing that up. As for your second point, before I said focus on less camera angles I stated it was a personal opinion. A complete beginner really shouldn’t attempt using 5 GoPros, while learning Adobe Pre, and figuring out cool lighting all on the first video. It’s overwhelming and most likely, there are many half finished drum covers sitting on countless drummers’ hard drives because of that. I was suggesting beginning simple.
I'm running a TD-11 module into a MacBook Pro 2009 (El Capitán) running Superior Drummer 3. I couldn't run a decent buffer without suffering latency issues. I ended up patching through a Native Instruments Komplete Audio 6 interface. This bypassed the onboard Apple soundboard and solved my problem. So, depending on your setup, it is possible to have latency issues with a Mac. Just FYI. Yes, upgrading to a new MacBook Pro would probably solve this but I can't budget that at the moment.
Reiner Rosin Good question. That was the first thing I tried and had issues also. I didn't have these problems with Superior Drummer 2. I think that SD3 is more intensive, requiring a better processor and sound board than my current MacBook Pro and TD-11 has.
Great video! Very good information here. Was using step 2 for a while and now playing with multiple cameras and drumming software. Would have loved to have seen this video 9 months ago when I started lol. thanks for sharing this valuable info!
Thanks for a very informative video! I'm going to go with an Irig for now, as I now know my DTX 502 doesn't support USB audio. An audio interface isn't a bad idea to consider
thanks justin. it was a very informative one. i personally benefited a lot. i always watch your videos and every-time they provide me solid info. keep up the good work.cheers.
Thank you, man. I’m struggling with recording because my Roland td11 cause the driver don’t work great with Windows 10. Already have an I-rig but don’t knew that works. I definitely will go with this. I was also looking for some trs-trrs p2 cable. Anyway, thank you again, amazing video and very rich of information. You gained a subscriber.
Great video! I was just wondering how you know you're in time with the song if you're not listening to it while playing? And how do you know what part of the song you're drumming to if you're not listening to it? I'm hoping to get in to it but unsure about that
Hi Justin, Some days I'm so lazy to typing anything, like today! BUT your practical video made me have to write it: THANK YOU so much Please Keep go on...
Unfortunately I could not get my E-Drum (Roland HD1) recorded today. I have a Samsung S7. My camera cannot record the drum. Backing track comes from PC. May you can helpf me with this? The aim is shooting simple UA-cam video from my drumming. Thanx in advance. :)
The clip where you had the video editing program up and you synced your talking inside the editing program was freaking awesome. I'm like wait what! Hey Justin all trapped inside the video editor! Get outa there!
Hey, really great video. Could you tell me how you monitor the song and the drums at the same time without recording the song along with the drums? Do I need a splitter? I was gonna use FL Studio with maybe Superior drummer. What if your opinions on those? Thank you so much for this information.
Justin, Awesome video! I'm finding your channel full of very useful information, this being one of them and perfect for what I am trying to do. You've already answered many of the question I have as a new electronic drum player. Keep up the great work! Very happy subscriber here.
I made 2 drum covers back in 2010 of me playing 2 Chris Tomlin songs live at church with a cheap $20 Jaz camera from Big Lots and it's condenser mic. It was all in synch with no latency, and I got some nice responses and then I suddenly got 2 red flags from youtube, so I wrote them an email asking why and what can I do to fix it, but before I got a response I was banned! I see face book and IM postings of music (drums, guitar, etc.) covers with no crediting the artist, but youtube requires it. Why the difference? I want to make more but have always been apprehensive that it might happen again! Thanks Justin for all you do for us e-drummers!
Really digging the part (and recently just experienced it) about going for less camera angles. I suspect with GoPros it's possible to just have to press 1 button from the laptop and activate all the different cameras while also having all the angles showing up on screen in real time. Trial and errors with camera angles, having to walk back to all cams, making sure there's enough space remaining and that they are armed is so energy/focus consuming. I'm always like : I hope I get it this time cuz I don't wanna have to redo the recording process ON TOP of recording a live performance which is already taxing.
Hi Justin! I want to start making drum covers, i just have questions first before uploading. 1. Is there any copyright issues if I do drum covers? 2. If i get drumless song on youtube, and do it as my drum cover is that another copyright issue? 3. Can i monetize my drum cover? Thank you Justin. Big help to me your answer.
There is another way - That I don't think you covered? Drum module out > inexpensive interface like The Miditech Audioface 2 > phone charging port. You have to have an otg enabled phone. To my knowledge most of these are stereo. The Miditech is an extremely handy little unit which is made for ios too. It's actually designed to record your fav old tapes /records onto iPad, but it works pretty well with Android too via the charging port for drum covers. The audio quality is very good. It gets its power from your phone. Then I use Power Director to edit the vdo. (Android) Also, your phone needs to have a decent camera (which most mid priced to high end phones have anyway) I use a Samsung Galaxy A50, and use Open Camera which is a far better app than the stock one. I also use a Huawei P9 Lite as a 2nd camera, it difficult to synch the Huawei with the sound which is recorded on the Samsung, but you get used to it pretty quickly. So with this you have 1080p or 4k and direct line in sound. You can also use Video mp3 Converter /Lexus Audio Editor (play store) to extract the audio for editing if necessary. This to me is the easiest way to do it. Also, using chroma key/green screen can also be a big help in changing the background to make it interesting.
Hi, Love your posts. You're very knowledgeable. I've had a long career as a pro percussionist but just bought my first set of V-Drum ( Roland TD-17 KVX) thanks to your reviews. I know this is an old video for you, but if you happen to read it I wonder if you could help me out? I'm trying out to record to my Canon Rebel T5I. I've run a cable ( 1/4" end into module mono output and 1/8 end into the camera mic in.) and using my iPhone as a source for the drumless track. First, I turned down the Camera's audio to the bottom and raised the module's sound to the loudest as per your suggestion and I was not getting any audio pick up at all on the camera. Then I went up to 1/4 on the camera and pulled back on the module level and I'm getting some blow out when I hit the cymbals even though I'm trying to hold back the volume... this, of course, happens as well even without any drumless track running. Any suggestions? Is it just a matter of trial and error to get the right balance?.
This video alone made me subscribe to your channel. Now, I’m no newbie as far as music, audio recording, video recording or even video editing is concerned (in fact, I did think I even do a decent job with lighting, if you check out my latest video). So I do feel your video covered all necessary bases for anyone to get started. Many years ago, before the whole drum covers craze started, I even did a raw video shot on a handycam with room sound and the song synced in editing. Did its job just fine. So I also see value in the less is more approach. But because I am a bit of a perfectionist, and I do enjoy putting together a quality video, here’s a brief rundown of my setup, if it may help someone. (That’s the beauty of UA-cam!) 1. At the root of it all, I use a converted mesh head TAMA kit with Remo heads on it, as well as Zildjian Gen16 cymbals. These are fabulous cymbals to get your thing on and not disturb your neighbors... too much. - 2. I trigger the heads with drum and other brand triggers and run them through a (discontinued?) Alesis DM Dock, which is connected via USB to my laptop running EZ Drummer 2. The Zildjian cymbals I run through the Zildjian Gen16 module. 3. I also use my iPad for the original tracks’ sound source from videos I find on UA-cam. 4. I plug these three sources into a small mixing desk along with a Shure headset, for those times when I want to be teaching something and be heard with a nice quality. The phones output on the desk provides me with my personal mix (I love the Sennheiser HD202 headphones). 5. I output everything from the mixing desk Main through jack cables that I then connect to the Zoom Q8 (think GoPro if it came with professional audio connectors). This is the the final mix, so if anything sounds off, I’ll check the connections above or just re-record. Add a few GoPro-like off-brand cameras, sync up everything in editing and that’s it! Again, you can check out the final result on my latest drum cover on my recently launched channel. (Click my name). Hope it helped! Thanks for your video!
Hey Justin :-). Just wanted to say that your clips really help me, so thanks heaps. Im a re-incarnated drummer after a 20 year break. ive bought a Kat KT2, expanded of course :-). Im really struggling with all the techy stuff but your vids really help. i used to play only acoustic and half the time not even mics etc lol. the likes of you and blokes like Mike Luke, Little Drummer etc really keep me enthused in a world of tech that would otherwise demorilise me. ill need to watch this video a few times i think as im not quite computing it in my brain real well. I have got a new 2017 MacBook Air. i have ezdrummer 2. I have Gopro. Any suggestions on getting started with my drum covers would be greatly appreciated. Cheers from down under.
I've bought a used DTXpress IV afew months back, and just bought a Presonus 96 USB. But I can't seem to to get a sound via the mono output -> audio interface -> Studio One (DAW) or Audacity. I've not yet tried stereo or the headphone jack method. I hope I don't have to go to the MIDI route because it means I need to spend more $ on drum softwares.. As for video software, here's one for my fellow aspiring drummers! I found a certain free software called "Shotcut", you can check it out!
Here is my thoughts about this topic and to your video: - I think the only really good working way to record drums for a cover is using a DAW (option #6 in your list). This gives you the chance to have different volume levels and content in your headphones and your final mix. E.g. on my headphones I like to add a click track and the original drum sounds (with lowered volume) and have my drums louder than the music and in the mix I only have the music and my drums mixed in the proper ratio - As an alternative to Reaper (60$) I can recommend Cubase LE. It's available for about 15 bucks on some magazine's DVDs. It has some basic mixing and effects and can handle MP3 audio as well. It even has some video features in it, but I am not sure whether they are intented for producing video clips - You mention a free drum VST. I guess you are talking about MT Power Drumkit 2? There is also a free version of DrumCore 3 floating around in the public. I think MT Power Drumkit 2 is sounding better, but for some music DrumCore 3 might work as well - Even with the onboard sound of a Windows laptop latency isn't a problem anymore with a free ASIO driver like ASIO4ALL from Steinberg. The main problem is the sound quality when using edrum headphones on a PCs headphone jack because of the different impedances. I am using the USB sound of my Roland TD-15. A cheap and acceptable alternative is the Behringer UCA202
Clapping 3 times after pressing the REC button will help syncing Audio and Video - Easy to identify in Video and shows 3 peaks in the Audio track.
I usually hit the snare 3 times as need synching with my e-drum tracks, but thats great for acoustic stuff
Count the time with your stick.
You make more eye contact with me than any of my friends. 😭😂 Thank you for the video. 🤙🏽

It took me 6 years to find exactly the way I wanted to approach this e-drums recording lol Huge thanks man.
This video was the reason why I got the irig!
No bs, no promotions, just succinct and concise info peppered in with personal experience. Great video.
Dude, I am starting my drum covers journey with my e-kit, this was amazing! Thanks a bunch!
I know this is an old video, but I just started drums lessons and this video was super useful. Thank you! :)

did you buy the "IK Multimedia iRig 2 Guitar Interface Adaptor for iPhone, iPod Touch & iPad" off of amazon? Just curious as I am gonna buy it
@@chancben i actually bought mine from guitar center. they offer a warranty so whenever the wires get busted they replace them with a new irig

Why you don't use your TD-11 as an audio device?
ANTWORTEN
Reiner Rosin Good question. That was the first thing I tried and had issues also. I didn't have these problems with Superior Drummer 2. I think that SD3 is more intensive, requiring a better processor and sound board than my current MacBook Pro and TD-11 has.
Wow! Just what I needed. Thank you. A ton of information in a short periuod of time. Taking notes!
Thanks for this. watched a lot of videos and this was the most helpful. easy to understand and very well explained.
Thanks a lot, idea of using IRig to record drum really works. It gives a decent good quality sound.your presentation is also good 👍
Congratulations for this video is perfect explained, you give ideas, ways to do everyone for any result he wants!! Yeah Man!!Great!!
Great video! Very good information here. Was using step 2 for a while and now playing with multiple cameras and drumming software. Would have loved to have seen this video 9 months ago when I started lol. thanks for sharing this valuable info!
Best video ever, how to record a vid with audio.!!! Thank you so much 65 Drum 👏🏻👏🏻👌🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻 You a got a new sub here...
Thanks dude!
Thanks for a very informative video! I'm going to go with an Irig for now, as I now know my DTX 502 doesn't support USB audio. An audio interface isn't a bad idea to consider
Such a good topic!
And so many options.
Im a happy interface + cubase user.
Have used asio4all allot to, great for starting to upgrade.
Appreciate the clear info and what can be technical. Always wanted to do this. Thx
Great video, Justin. Very good info for the newer drummers on the scene.
great video, Justin! I record my videos with a gopro and record to audacity then mix them together with VSDC video editor.
This was amazing! Thank you for putting it together!
Great video exactly what I was searching for, but providing even more insight and tips!
thanks justin. it was a very informative one. i personally benefited a lot. i always watch your videos and every-time they provide me solid info. keep up the good work.cheers.
Awesome, thanks Justin! And bonus points for going with Tom Sawyer in your example!
Thanks a lot men, the 6 was definitely what I was looking for to play with GGD Invasion !
Thanks Justin just what I've been trying to research. great info
Great job Justin! Really solid info on all the different ways to get dropping some cover videos. Take care man.
So far, you’ve been my go-to for everything drums and I’ve never been disappointed. I appreciate ya much.
Really enjoyed this. I have been wondering how this was all done and now I know.
Thanks great video i ordered IRIG 2 ! For recording drums
Great video! I was just wondering how you know you're in time with the song if you're not listening to it while playing? And how do you know what part of the song you're drumming to if you're not listening to it? I'm hoping to get in to it but unsure about that
Metronomes and memory can be helpfull.
Second video I’m watching by you and sold. First one was the TD27kv vs the Strike Pro SE.
Very useful tutorial Justin. Thanks a lot!
Great vid Justin!
Hey I would love for you to do a review of the magnatrack drum triggers!
Thanks
Hi Justin, Some days I'm so lazy to typing anything, like today!
BUT your practical video made me have to write it:
THANK YOU so much
Please Keep go on...
Thanks so much! I'm glad the video was helpful :D
@@65Drums Hi again,
I spent half of my today, have bought new cabels, installed new Apps, 100X recird-test, still no success! :/
Justin, thank you so much for these videos you put up. So useful..
This channel is amazing, subscribed
You are great! Thanks for all the info. I love your videos.
Thank You so much! now I can make my own drum cover using irig..
Your videos are always so helpful. I have acoustic drums but I enjoyed this video a lot :)
Great video. Thanks a ton. Love the sync joke at 15:30
Justin, Awesome video! I'm finding your channel full of very useful information, this being one of them and perfect for what I am trying to do. You've already answered many of the question I have as a new electronic drum player. Keep up the great work! Very happy subscriber here.
Thanks dude!
My man!! I been waiting for this!!
This is an amazingly helpful video. Thank you very much.
Hi Justin! I want to start making drum covers, i just have questions first before uploading.
1. Is there any copyright issues if I do drum covers?
2. If i get drumless song on youtube, and do it as my drum cover is that another copyright issue?
3. Can i monetize my drum cover?
Thank you Justin. Big help to me your answer.
this was absolutely great!!! thanks a lot mate
Fantastic video- thanks for your continued great videos for us drummer!
Thanks Christopher!
(Android)
Also, your phone needs to have a decent camera (which most mid priced to high end phones have anyway) I use a Samsung Galaxy A50, and use Open Camera which is a far better app than the stock one.
Could you a “How to” for the iRig Recorder 3 in recording audio with video for an electric drum with iTunes and a utube drumless cover?
Great job! I really enjoyed this!
I'd love you see you expand on connections that involve video and audio simultaneously while using Toontrack software or other drum software.
This is just fantastic thank you.
(That’s the beauty of UA-cam!)
Like to vote for Method 6. Best sound quality so far.
Here is my thoughts about this topic and to your video:
- I think the only really good working way to record drums for a cover is using a DAW (option #6 in your list). This gives you the chance to have different volume levels and content in your headphones and your final mix. E.g. on my headphones I like to add a click track and the original drum sounds (with lowered volume) and have my drums louder than the music and in the mix I only have the music and my drums mixed in the proper ratio
- As an alternative to Reaper (60$) I can recommend Cubase LE. It's available for about 15 bucks on some magazine's DVDs. It has some basic mixing and effects and can handle MP3 audio as well. It even has some video features in it, but I am not sure whether they are intented for producing video clips
- You mention a free drum VST. I guess you are talking about MT Power Drumkit 2? There is also a free version of DrumCore 3 floating around in the public. I think MT Power Drumkit 2 is sounding better, but for some music DrumCore 3 might work as well
- Even with the onboard sound of a Windows laptop latency isn't a problem anymore with a free ASIO driver like ASIO4ALL from Steinberg. The main problem is the sound quality when using edrum headphones on a PCs headphone jack because of the different impedances. I am using the USB sound of my Roland TD-15. A cheap and acceptable alternative is the Behringer UCA202
Happy new year, Justin.. your channel are growing so fast.. congratulations, awesome work
Thanks Arlindo! I've been working really hard on it.
