I forgot to mention that a lot of current generation Simmons drums, such as the Titan 50 and the SD1250 have Bluetooth MIDI. So you will not need a cable connection for MIDI if you have one of these drum kits! You will only need to connect to the Bluetooth MIDI within the Garageband Advanced Settings, and then use an audio output from your iPad to the Aux input of the module.

On my Alesis Nitro Mesh Kit and my Medelli DD508DX I could literally just plug in the iPad using USB and it was pre mapped except for one or two pads, on my Roland TD11KV not so. In fact with the Roland, I have to use a MIDI INTERFACE (thank goodness it still had a midi out on the module, some modern modules don't have it anymore. There are some great apps for ios like Drum Session and DRUMS XD which are very reasonably priced too.

Lol man, I did that today with my 1st gen mini iPad based on your older iPad video. I gave up years ago using midi controller through lighting cable because it wont recognize it after update iOS 9.3.5. But it ocurred to me that I could connect the Simmons Titan 50 through bluetooth. And yes ! it works flawlessly. Barely noticeable latency. What I couldnt do is listen to the audio back through the Titan 50 module. I just listened through the iPads headphones output.

I had one of the newer iPads, but got rid of it for this same reason. Tried the hub thing, but it was still finicky and cumbersome. Hated that fact that they deliberately removed the headphone jack, and anything Bluetooth had latency. So I just went back to using my older iPad pros with home button and headphone jack.

I have a very simple e-kit that I cannot change most anything, midi notes included, but I’m doing very much the same thing…
I use a Lightening to usb-B cable to my kit module USB MIDI and output of my iPad to drum module aux input. I also can’t turn off local MIDI (I did say cheap ;v), but I can turn the volume off on the module. So I don’t hear the drum module sounds and only sounds from the iPad. I can then play along with UA-cam songs etc. Oh, and I have my phones connected to the drum module.
I’ve been using an app called Drums XD. I need to try GarageBand!
    Thanks for the great content!
    Karl
BTW, you can do this with a good Android tablet, running a DAW like Cubasis or FL Studio Mobile. You can even get good VST drums for these. However the iPad does a better and simpler job. Plus it’s so well supported by the music industry by in large. I also think you get better sound from the iPad.
UPDATE: So Garageband does work, but FL Studio Mobile is more awesome (altho also more complicated 😑). It let's me set whatever sound I want for each pad or cymbal (triggers) and I can adjust volume independently, as well as other settings (effects, attach, sustain etc). I can add HH pedal and Open sounds to a cut group so the pedal stops the open sound. This lets me fashion multiple custom kits that I can switch to between songs even!
    Thanks for the inspiration @demonicsweaters !!! 😁🏆

@@DesolateMourning I just picked up a small Coolmusic amp that has Bluetooth. I also have FL Studio Mobile (a DAW for iOS & Android about $30-40). FL let's me set up a kit using various sounds from free and included drum libraries. One drum piece per track. So I can fashion kits completely from scratch! I can adjust volumes/effects/sounds of each piece as well! It's an awesome set up! I can select from more than one kit, once set up.
Bluetooth in the amp is great because the iPad does all the drum processing with FL, and I can control music and volume from my phone via Bluetooth to the amp. Though you could do everything from the iPad (or Android tablet) as well, I think. FL keeps the midi connection active in background, I think.
One trick is; for the high hat you have to assign a 'cut group' (under Seq settings), so that when you use the hat pedal it stops the open hat sound. Both the hat pedal and the open hat need to be in the same cut group "A".
I haven't been able to get cymbal choke working just yet. Cut groups don't seem to work as my kit puts out 0 for the midi value of the cymbal note and I think FL is ignoring it.
This all brings amazing sounds to my cheap kit!!

There should be several velocity curves to choose from in the DrumKat, read the manual to see how to select them. You can't really adjust trigger parameters in the module since the DrumKat uses MIDI out. If the velocity curve doesn't help, you may need a new FSR for your DrumKat. Alternate Mode will still fix any DrumKat sent to them for a charge, but it's very reasonable. You can also just order the FSR directly from them and install it yourself.

@@justinsnow3979 I think it's called the Simmons Advanced app or something like that. It tells you the models they work for in the app descriptions. I know it's not Simmons Drums 2, that one is for Titans.

I have a Yamaha dtx 520k with a dtx 500 module! I cannot find anywhere in the manual how to set this up! I got everything setup the way you did! Can record! Can use songs on the iPad! But don’t know how to turn of the local control! Need help

Just turn your volume off on your dtx500? If you route audio from your iPad to the module’s aux in, and have your phones in the module, it should work.

@@calebcasselman8631 it may not work if both are tied to the volume control. It does depend on how your kit works.

@@calebcasselman8631 Ok great. So then try this instead. Leave the midi connection as is between your drum module and the iPad, but remove the aux cable and use the iPads earphone jack as your output. Turn down the volume on the drum module - tho that shouldn't matter.
With this config, your drum module sends midi to Grarageband, which in turn determines the sounds used for each drum pad, and that's what you should hear from the iPads earphone jack. Don't connect any output on your drum module, other than USB/midi to the iPad.
(Note that volume on the drum module, has nothing to do with midi data sent to the iPad. All volume is now controlled on the iPad)

the GB Drums, for a free virtual drummer, have a lot of uses, but.. have a very limited amount of midi mappings for good hi hat triggering, at least in my experience.. a closed hat on the bow works fine, an open hat on the edge works fine, and you can get the pedal to trigger, well the pedal sounds.. on a Roland TD9 and the VH-11 hat controller..., no luck with getting the pedal to close an open hat sound.....you can only close the open hat by striking a closed bow.. .triggering SSD 5 or even Logic Drums requires no extra fiddling.. the hats works great... not so with the GB drums..

Yes, more simple hi hat mechanisms work best. Really a simple kit with single zone cymbals is mostly plug and play.

Yes! You’ll just need an audio adapter that allows you to use the lightning port too, unless you have Bluetooth MIDI

I have a few pieces of MIDI plus gear, actually I just got a new MIDI controller by them that I like. However, they're very hit or miss. I've got some hits with an equal amount of misses. I've never tried their drums.

Apple Logic Pro is essentially the better version of GarageBand. There’s also Cubasis by Steinberg for iOS that has a lot of pro features. I need to make a video on that.

@AlternativeDrummer Sounds like a good way to go. I've had the Alesis DM8 forever now lol, so far its held up to what I do. I had a sweet pearl export pro series 7 piece set with Roto Tom's and a ton of cymbals. Unfortunately I lost that complete set to a pawn shop over my own stupidity. So I've gotten out that whole and things have been great for oh 12 years. Anyway, f8nding something thats similar I dynamics especially is hard. Obviously the Dm8 isn't close to a td30 or 50. That's really my biggest complaint, dynamics and cymbal sounds. Home is the dynamics on the Simmons you have?
Thanks for the tips man, much appreciated

Tapes are pretty popular with several genres and scenes of musicians. They are stylish, cheap and have a cool sound. They have been popular as retro format for over a decade. Some musicians never stopped using them. I was releasing 7 inch records in the 90s. It’s a big old world.
