When a musician or band is honored at the Kennedy Center event they usually invite a bunch of famous musicians to perform covers of their songs in their honor. So yeah, the older gentlemen in the audience are the surviving members of Led Zeppelin, and the drummer who played with Heart is their late drummer's son who considers all of them his uncles and actually is Robert Plant's godson, so it obviously was a very moving tribute. Original drummer John Bonham used to wear a bowler hat. His son Jason is sitting in for his father wearing his hat, and the whole chorus at the end all wear bowlers to honor John Bonahm
For those that did not know, the reason they kept showing the drummer, is that his dad was their drummer and had passed away before being inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of fame. Very fitting that his son got to be on this cover!
So.. best band ever covered by a great band, cannot go wrong. Plus John Bonham’s son as the drummer, just a perfect take on what music is. This should be a 47 out of 10, with the original being a 10 billion out of ten.
It's so funny. Guaranteed, every single person in that audience knows this song so damn well, and what they're appreciating is the cover. For Vin and Sori only, this is a brand new song to them.
I went a few years refusing to listen to this cover, even though I'm an absolute huge fan of both Heart and Led Zeppelin. In my opinion this is one of just a few songs that should never be covered. Many have attempted and although they put their all into the cover, they have failed miserably. Stairway to Heaven is on many lists, mine included, as the greatest rock song of all time! I had a really cool music teacher who would have us listen to music and then we'd have to give our interpretation of the lyrics. This is one of those songs. We all had different interpretations and we were all correct. The lyrics were written in a manner that can be interpreted in any manner the listener needs them to be. The music itself actually builds up as if you're actually climbing the Stairway to Heaven. What Mozart, Beethoven, Chopin, etc. was to classical music, Led Zeppelin is to rock and roll! Heart slayed this cover!
Without knowing the context of all of this, still a very good reaction. The three being 'honored' and The Kennedy Center that are left of Zeppelin watching their most iconic famous song (usually a top 3 fan voted song of all time), with the son of the drummer playing, who passed away in 1980, of which they never really played again until pretty recently, is a very large context to the song and moment. This performance was epic.

I am SO disappointed with you two. OK, its weird you (Vin) have never heard the original. So be it. Vin As you know, This is annual Kennedy Honors. That year, 2012 had surviving members of Led Zeppelin: Robert Plant, John Paul Jones, and Jimmy Page in the main audience with Obama and his wife. Their late drummer, John Bonham's son, Jason doing the drumming. Jason considered as one comment mentioned as his uncles. You can see Robert's eyes tearing up at the end.

Led Zeppelin were being honored by the Kennedy Center and yes, that was the surviving members of Led Zeppelin which the camera repeatedly cut to. Also, the drummer in this performance is the son of the late Led Zeppelin drummer and his dad often wore the hat that Jason and the chorus were wearing. It was a great tribute and a great performance, though you should have listened to the original first, either the live or studio versions. This song is considered by many as one of the greatest rock song ever and the original did not have a choir.
profanepersonality beat me to the punch, camera kept panning to the 3 living Zeppelin members and Heart's drummer here is the son of late Zeppelin drummer.
I saw Heart on August 16th 1977, the day Elvis died and they closed out the show by playing Zeppelin's "Rock n Roll" dedicating it to the King. They are heavily influenced by Led Zeppelin and have covered many of their songs over the last 4 decades. Actually this arrangement was done by Heart, they had a day to rehearse. Depending on which version of the original you watch/listen to, album cut or live, it varies. For me the best version was "Live at Madison Square Garden 1973".
This was televised for the Kennedy Center Honors. They honor various artists every year. You will see the honories wearing the rainbow ribbon w/ gold clasps around their necks. They bring out artists to pay homage to these artists by doing renditions of their more famous songs/ acts. Led Zepplin (Robert Plant - lead vocals, Jimmy Page - Lead & Rhythm guitars, John Paul Jones - bass & John Bonham - drums) broke up after the death of John Bonham. On stage, Heart along with Jason Bonham on drums, who is the son of the late John Bonham, paid homage to them by performing their most iconic song. The surviving members are in the box looking down on this performance. Robert Plant said that this is the ONLY rendition of Stairway to Heaven that he has ever liked and enjoyed. This was one moving performance.
This version actually edits out a couple verses. Long song. But yes this was part of the Kennedy Center Honors, where cultural achievements to the landscape of America are honored. So they got an award from Obama for their contributions, along with other artists, scientists, etc. They did it every year. Not sure if any have happened the last 4 years or not.
I guess that was a Big Anniversary Event related to Led Zeppelin and a lot of bands did their covers. The original band was there all the time watching their songs played on stage in their honor.
It was an honors/tribute event. There were quite a few other people that were honored that night, that weren’t singers. In fact, that was David Letterman, sitting next to Jimmy Page, who was also given honors that night.
It's the Kennedy Center Honors, it happens once a year, at the Kennedy Center. The President at the time, honors a band, musician, actor/actress, photographer, artist etc, for their contribution to society, through the arts. Honorable guests are in attendance, while other musicians, actors/actresses, artists, pay tribute through performance, video montages, & or speeches. It's been happening for decades. The only reason we haven't had any recently, is probably because Trump didn't want the embarrassment of everyone refusing an invitation. I'm sure it will resume again, when it's deemed Covid safe.
Heart was greatly influenced by Led Zeppelin and you can here a lot of Zeppelin in their own originals. Heart are the Wilson sisters primarily but they had a very good rock band in the 70s and a little more commercial and glamorous in the 80s before returning to their roots and are back together after a brief family squabble.
one of the greatest songs in history, written by one of the best groups ever, covered by the best female lead bands ever, and then . . . (that must be them ?)
Kennedy center honors. You know you're doing something right if you make led zeppelin cry. I love Heart. And this was ranked one of the best covers. Btw the electric mixed in, is how the song is. You need to listen to the original. The drummer is Jason Bonham the son of Led zeppelin drummer John Bonham who passed away.
Don't forget that Page was a big fan of Crowley .When he speaks of words in this song it could be a mantra, an invocation or a magic formula."There is two path" it means right hand or left hand path in the tantric way (Crowley was left hand) . Path of purification (the right) or path of taking all the senses to the extrem (the left) both lead to illumination , one is safe but long , the other is fast but dangerous.
I really enjoyed your discussion and this is the first time I have seen anyone react to a "cover" (although this was way more than that, it was a tribute) before trhe original and so it was great in terms of that as well....your first time hearing this song !
The Kennedy Center honors are granted to artists who had big influence on America culture (kinda like the library of congress). Each year 5 nominees will be nominated and they celebrate with the presence of the president of the united states in Washington DC.
The artists are presented with lifetime achievement medals from the President, can you imagine 45 hosting these awards, it would be an evening of self aggrandisement.
This was at the Kennedy center honoring Led Zeppelin, not the Obama's. The older gents in the balcony where Jimmy Page, John Paul Jones and Robert Plant. The drummer was Jason Bonham , the son of the late great drummer John Bonham of Led Zeppelin. You should watch the whole tribute to Zeppelin where artist like Kid Rock , Lenny Kravitz paid tribute and sang Zeppelin songs...
In my mind this is the greatest cover of all time. Ann and Nancy killed it Jason was spot on. But to do it infront of the greatest rock group of all time and to have them think back of all the great memories and then to have one of the hardest losses in rock history with John Bonham. These guys got to reflect on the most know rock song
This is the Kennedy Center Honors for Led Zeppelin and also Buddy Guy. If you want to see another awesome performance from this night, check out Beth Hart and Jeff Beck performing "I'd Rather Go Blind" for Buddy Guy.
Btw this performance was part of a tribute to Led Zeppelin, thats why Obama was there. The guys with the rainbow thingy around their necks are members of LZ
Yes, the old guys were most of Led Zeppelin....most. John Bonham died in 1980 of a drunken mishap and that ended the band. John Bonham was considered by many to be the most influential drummer in Rock! When he died, there was no question that Led Zeppelin was over. His son, Jason Bonham is playing the drums in this performance. That hat he and the choir are were wearing is in reference to the hat John wore.
I know you all like Pink Floyd as do I but you still have not touched on the album that hooked me. The album is Obscured By Clouds. Got into this in 1973 while visiting a friend I met while going through a Army medical school. We had some great weed and some really good dry white wine. He said you have to hear this and during that foggy night we listened to it 3 times. The bit of the album that put the hook in me was 2 songs played back to back. Obscured by clouds and When your in. You will not be disappointed as this later let into what they are the most famous for. You know the 3 albums that made them what all progressive rock try’s to be like. Give them a listen to and see part of the roots of Pink Floyd post Sid Barrette.

You two had actually reacted to Heart 3 times before this. Crazy on You, Barracuda, and Alone. They're considered one of the greatest female-fronted rock bands ever. The Wilson sisters were also very close to Layne Staley from Alice in Chains and collaborated with him a bit. This song is probably the biggest loss on the channel since Imagine by John Lennon, in all honesty. Stairway to Heaven is the single most iconic rock song in history. It's the most popular Led Zeppelin song, it's one of the first songs most guitarists try to learn on guitar, and it's a song that's been banned from most guitar stores. Covering it was considered a taboo at one point. With Led Zeppelin reactions having strict copyright, you'll probably have to mute it, but hopefully you'll react to the original in time, as well as many other Led Zeppelin songs. There's been a ton of love for Black Sabbath and Iron Maiden and Metallica, but The Beatles and The Rolling Stones and Led Zeppelin really would be worth more experience. You'll love them.

You sould have listened to the original first to make a comparison then you would see how great this was
This version actually edits out a couple verses. Long song. But yes this was part of the Kennedy Center Honors, where cultural achievements to the landscape of America are honored. So they got an award from Obama for their contributions, along with other artists, scientists, etc. They did it every year. Not sure if any have happened the last 4 years or not.
All it took to replicate Zeppelin was a great rock band (Heart) John Bonnan's son (Jason) an orchestra and two choir's. They did a great job but...
...but NOTHING. DING DONG.
You should have listened to the original first.
That would have made sense
I think they have not reacted to the original because it can get blocked.
It's amazing to me how many people don't know about the Kennedy Center Honors. It's a shame really
I guess that was a Big Anniversary Event related to Led Zeppelin and a lot of bands did their covers. The original band was there all the time watching their songs played on stage in their honor.
Lenny Kravitz did a very passable cover of Whole Lotta Love.
Thank you so much for sharing that with me.
"that lady" lmao...
Can never replace the original with original members!
I really enjoyed your discussion and this is the first time I have seen anyone react to a "cover" (although this was way more than that, it was a tribute) before trhe original and so it was great in terms of that as well....your first time hearing this song !
I watch this at least once a week 🔥🔥🔥
So happy that you guys reacted to this!!!
The Kennedy Center honors are granted to artists who had big influence on America culture (kinda like the library of congress). Each year 5 nominees will be nominated and they celebrate with the presence of the president of the united states in Washington DC.
The "Uncoverable Song" and Heart murdered it!
The artists are presented with lifetime achievement medals from the President, can you imagine 45 hosting these awards, it would be an evening of self aggrandisement.
This still gives me goosebumps even after the 100th watch.
See the lead singer Robert Plant shed a tear! The older guys they keep showing is Led Zepplin
Btw this performance was part of a tribute to Led Zeppelin, thats why Obama was there. The guys with the rainbow thingy around their necks are members of LZ
Also, I believe I spotted Yo-Yo Ma and Carol King in the crowd.
Yo-Yo Ma, Jimmy Kimmel, Steven Colbert, Debbie Allen, and the one you thought was Carol King, is actually multi-Grammy winning legend, Bonnie Raitt. 👍
If this doesn't give you goosebumps you're ready for your dirt nap
This was so moving and it got to me emotionally
Heart is my favorite band they inspired me to pursue music as a job
ZEPPELIN WERE THE GIRLS IDOL'S YOU GUYS! :) SO THEY'RE PLAYING IT FOR THEM. AND JOHN BONHAM'S SON ( JASON ) IS THE DRUMMER! YEAH O'DRAMA IS THERE TOO. :) HAVE FUN, ENJOY!
Jason Bonham on drums! Son od the original LED Zeppelin drummer - one and only John Bonham!!! Check "Kashmir" from "Celebration Day" concert, original lineup with Jason also!😀
This is epic 👍
Ann Wilson was 62 yrs old when she did this. Nancy her sister was on the acoustic guitar
I loved seeing Bonnie Raitt rocking out in the audience!
For the Sin and Glory Alliance it was our winner for Cover Songs week.
Robert Plant has said that the lyrics don't have any specific meaning.
Something like that. He said it was abstract and he doesn't know what it means. It is open to interpretation.
Yeah but we all know whats going on....
