  • It is rare for Led Zeppelin to honor an artist to cover their song on such a platform as this. Heart received the honor of covering this iconic song, and with so many celebrities in the crowd, I could imagine the pressure they had to withstand. And their performance was just incredible.
Join professional opera singer Elizabeth Zharoff, as she listens to Heart for the first time, performing "Stairway To Heaven” ALSO for the first time!

I love watching an artist appreciate someone else's rendition of their song, or a song written in tribute to them.
There is a band called First Aid Kit, two sisters from Sweden who have some of the most hauntingly beautiful vocals in music. They do a tribute to old country music, yes they are from Sweden, pay homage to the great Carter family, Johnny Cash, Gram Parsons, and of course Emmy Lou Harris in the song Emmy Lou.
I would love to see you do a reaction to First Aid Kit singing their song "Emmy Lou" to Emmy Lou Harris at the Polar Music Prize.

I was part of the choir for this show, I'd love to share some behind the scenes details and answer questions!
Jason Bonham being on drums was a surprise that they hid from everyone, including everyone at every rehearsal. At rehearsal, Dave Grohl was the drummer, which we all thought made lots of sense, since Jack Black was doing the introduction, and Dave Grohl was their drummer for Tenacious D's "Tribute", which is ABOUT Stairway to Heaven, and this performance by Heart *is* a tribute to it! Then Jason Bonham came out and we were all shocked, including Led Zeppelin. He was wearing his dad's iconic bowler hat, and so they had all of us main choir members wear a bowler hat too. I still have mine.

So the video for this is actually cleverly cut from both the live performance with the audience there, AND the final dress rehearsal. You can tell because some of the choir members are in different places in different shots. For the dress rehearsal, I was next to my high school choir teacher, and the final performance she had moved to a different row.

The backstory of this makes it all the better. Heart had been doing this song as part of their live shows for several years, so they were well practiced. And then there's Jason Bonham. An amazing drummer in his own right, he's the son of the late drummer of Zepplin, who the rest of the band have known and played with hundreds of times since he was a child. Wearing his father's favorite hat. That was echoed in the chorus' outfits. The surviving members of the band had asked him to come to the ceremony and sit with them, but he said "sorry, I've got a gig that night", not letting them know he'd be on stage. They thought he was blowing them off. That's what brought the band to tears. In addition to the great performance of course. One of the best/biggest builds in a song ever.

Ann and Nancy are actual fans of Led Zeppelin and were very influenced by them. The way she stays true to every inflection of this song, just as Robert Plant sang it, is the ultimate mark of respect. As great as she is, she knows it's not about her and doesn't do any showboating. It's beautiful.
Also going on here is that Jason, the son of their late drummer John Bonham, is playing the drums. He was such a vital part of the band and their sound, that they refused to go on without him when he tragically died.
I think the combination of Ann's gorgeous tribute and seeing the son of their lost friend was just too much for them, because you can clearly see their emotional reaction. ❤️

Sit down and listen to this, from Led Zeppelin's new album. You're going to like it.' And it's like... you had cultural reference at that point. It was literally the first time people had heard the song. And you got together with your friends later and discussed it, and it was like, holy sh-t, this is probably the best rock song ever and this was way back in the 70s. And it still is the best rock song ever but people know about the song before they ever listen to it. Back then, to us, we had no idea what was about to run over us like a mothership crashing. When talking about this performance, both admitted to a little bit of stage fright performing Led Zeppelin's magnum opus in front of them. At cue-in, they held back a few seconds, looked at each other, took a deep breath, fist-bumped and took the stage. Damn. That took some balls...big brass ones. Then to top it off...they simply killed it. Killed it. The big grin from John Paul, the tear from Robert...and watching Jimmy rock out was just the icing on the cake...until Jason paused and looked up at his dad, and for some reason my screen gets hazy...foggy...and I gotta wipe my eyes for clarity.

It saddens me to listen to singers on shows who destroy lyrics by failing to pronounce words or mangle words without subtlety or control. This should be a lesson for all aspiring singers

It's an absolutely amazing performance! Besides obviously loving Page, Plant, and Jones reacting in their box, my favorite audience reaction is Yo-Yo Ma just casually rocking out.

I loved seeing Bonnie Raitt having a religious experience 😂 I think we all do when listening to this amazing tribute. One of the best live performances ever. Straight up.
