I have to absolutely agree you could never do it better than Led Zeppelin. However I don’t think you’ll ever hear a better more epic cover than this one. When you bring Robert Plant to tears and can get a smile from Jimmy Page and JPJ you know you nailed it. Great review
First of all, I can’t even imagine how much guts it took to perform this song in front of Jimmy Page, Robert Plant and John Paul Jones. Hats off to to them just for that. 2nd, the arrangement of this was beautiful however look how many people they had performing this song....whole choirs. Led Zeppelin was only four guys yet each of them was the best at what they did so when they performed it the song became one of the greatest rock songs ever written. The tribute to John Bonham with the hats was fantastic and I’m sure it was very hard for Jason to keep it together while performing. Like you said.... this was not better but it was a beautiful tribute to four of the greatest of all time.
Reading the comments elsewhere, Ann and Bonnie were terrifed about what Jimmy and Robert would say. They even considered sneaking quietly out in advance, to disappear forever. This cover gets so close to perfection, I can only say I am weeping within 30 seconds!
I read somewhere that the reason Ann Wilson wears that long black coat during this performance is to hide her set of giant brass balls she has for being able to preform this song in front of Plant, Page, and Jones.
Was a single mom, the words, to be a rock and NOT to roll meant everything to me! And my three children came out great! They are my gold in this earth, I got what I was owed! Praise God for that! That’s what this song meant to me!
The emotion I felt was seeing Led Zeppelin themselves react to this honor. They did the band and the memory of John Bonham proud, as evidenced by Robert Plant's emotional response.
One of the reasons Robert Plant looked like he was about to cry during the Heart tribute performance was because he had just prior to the show been talking to his bandmates about Jason Bonham, the man playing the drums and who is the son of the Led Zeppelin drummer, the late John Bonham. Robert Plant was best friends with the father, and told his bandmates that he regretted that they had not invited his son Jason to the Kennedy Center Honors to enjoy it on behalf of his Dad. Then he all of a sudden Jason appeared on stage with Heart and Robert Plant was overcome seeing him.
Stairway to Heaven is not just a song my friend. It is a spiritual awakening of the utmost kind. It’s not the lyrics, which are wonderful by the way, it is the notes and how they are arranged to form this song. It is a gift from God. You can say rock is the devils music, which I’ve heard so often from my Pentecostal background, but nothing that beautiful can never be evil. Stairway is truly a beautiful gift from God. Not just to the people from the 1970’s but to all mankind. Not in a zillion years will any rap song, dumb country song or any song will never ever match the majestic greatness of Stairway to Heaven. 🤟Rock On!
Heart has been performing this song live for over four decades now. They don't do it in every show but it's possible that they have done it live more times than Zeppelin did
I cry every single time I hear THIS version!! To sit and watch Jimmy Page cry from appreciation and respect is NOTHING SHORT of LIFE CHANGING ❤✌❤ Thank you for the wonderful reaction
Go said what i have tried to say what made zep so great is they were like an all star basketball team every player was the best at what they did and there were no egos because everybody got to shine, but heart did a fantastic job all you had to do is look at page smiling it was worth a thousand words
It brought a lot of smiles and tears to the boys. Robert said he got emotional because they didn't know Jason was going to play. Then at the end, he looks up at the words "to heaven." This is a performance of a lifetime. Beauty perfected.
" Nothing will make me feel like I felt the first time I heard Led Zeppelin's Stairway To Heaven. When I heard that, man - that's life changing shit to me.." - Amen. Absolutely, the truth. Life changing! I will say though, that this is the the best cover I have ever heard. It was a glorious tribute.
Respect man! No one will ever do it better than they did, but that being said, this is my favorite "cover" of all time! Anne's voice is so perfect and with Jason Bonham, the son of the deceased original drummer Jon Bonham, it just adds a whole another dimension! It's both a tribute to Jon Bonham and Led Zeppelin, it's also a representation of the ungodly talent of Anne and Nancy Wilson and then you add an orchestra and a choir?! Pure magic!
I absolutely LOVE this version, but even though this one gives me goosebumps, I'd never compare it to the original. Mainly because unlike a lot of covers this one wasn't done to compete with the original. The whole point of the Kennedy Center Honors is to do just that, HONOR the original artists. Next to the original, this version beats any other I've heard hands down.
I have to agree you cannot say anyone does Led Zeppelin better than Led Zeppelin themselves. The whole point of tributes or covers are to give their best interpretation of the band or the song and again I agree that this is the next best thing to the original. The vocals by Ann Wilson are testament to both Robert Plant and herself. She has to be one of the best female vocalists.
I think both Robert Plant and Jimmy page we’re getting tearful watching that. It wasn’t just a great tribute to Led Zeppelin but the effort put into covering it showed great respect for one of the greatest songs ever created
I do believe this is the best rendition of this song, ever. I believe that’s the reason for his emotion watching the performance .... their masterpiece was taken even higher. This was singular, separate, and most importantly honoring. It was a performance based on love for the originators.
I don't believe Heart would want this to be considered better... I have never met anyone who aspires to be better than their idol, because it doesn't get better. That said, no one but Ann could have done this song justice. IMO one of the greatest female vocalists ever, and sorely underappreciated. I swear I have a spiritual moment everytime I watch this video. I truly enjoyed your reaction. Thank you.
I once read a comment to this video that went like this....”ya know what was under that big coat Ann was wearing? A huge set of brass balls for having the courage to get up there in front of The Original Band members and blow it out of the water!” That was perfect if you ask me♥️♥️♥️
There's a reason why Heart was called the female Led Zeppelin back in the day hon! All you have to do is watch it again & actually open your eyes so that you can see how much the guys absolutely & thoroughly enjoyed this performance. You missed seeing so much! It was beautiful to listen to, even more to watch while listening!! Not only that, remember Ann's age at this time... she couldn't have killed it anymore than she did! I still tear up watching this & I've seen it literally a couple of dozen times!
Nailed it - feeling again how you felt the first time you heard it. And the beauty of ALL THOSE PEOPLE feeling the same joy in one song. What greater homage is there to Plant and Page? Best tribute ever.
To do this song under these circumstances with little rehearsal in front of that audience, just proves Ann & Nancy Wilson are 2 of the greatest performers to ever walk on stage. Your reactions to music are fabulous, can't be critical of anything you've done, huge fan of your channels!!!!!!!
Really enjoyed your comments and insights on this breathtaking performance by Ann and Nancy Wilson, the orchestra and choir. This is something you will always remember.
If you seen any interviews with Ann Wilson even from way back in the 70s you would see that Led Zeppelin was one of the biggest influences on Heart and their music. This was a tribute. It shouldn’t be compared. I should be honored. I don’t think anyone else could’ve honored them better.
"We created more beauty out of beautiful." What a succinct, incisive, and delightful summation. It's truly not a comparison, nor a competition, but it's own thing, and having that perspective only increases the capacity to appreciate a piece of music, or just about anything else. I was a young woman when I first heard Led Zepplin perform this song. It was, on so many levels, a revelation, a transformative experience that I'll never forget it--as was hearing, all these years later, Heart's performance of this song. (As an aside, I really like the way you evaluate music and look forward to seeing more of your reactions. Thanks for what you're doing!)
Members of Heart and the members of Led Zeppelin have been very very good friends for a very very long time every time I’ve seen Heart live which is many times they’ve always covered a Led Zeppelin song. This was just the icing on the cake of their friendship
Legends singing to gods...EPIC!!! So glad you watched this...Ann Wilson nailed it and the way the drummer looks to heaven for his dad at the end...I cried 🖖🏻🇨🇦😀
Ann is such an incredible vocal talent, but what makes this performance extraordinary is her reverence to the song and to Led Zeppelin. She does not "over sing" the song! She stays very true to the original while still making it her own. VERY tough to do! I love this!
This is a tribute and as you put it a phenomenal emotional rendition but Led Zeppelin where rock gods and Heart as rock legends honouring rock gods with their respect and own touch on arguably the greatest rock anthem ever written & recorded and performed your reaction was true honest and down to earth keep up the great work & stay safe
LOVE your appreciation for music, for both the purity of the original as well as being open to worthy covers! As much as we all cherish Led Zeplin, and let's not kid ourselves, no one compares to them performing this iconic song, Heart was masterful in recreating it with their own touches while still paying homage to the original. Absolutely loved what they did here in paying tribute to the great Led Zeplin!!
It will never be better, but Heart took it to a new level. The band definitely appreciate what they did. Got to understand Led Zeppelin was a big influence for them. What makes this such a great rendition is the simple things Heart brought in. Man when they brought that choir in it was over. Just to see their faces says it all.
Remember... this is an HONOR show... and by God... To be the members of Zeppelin, watching this production of your creation, all these years later... in THIS fashion... yeah, I would say they were honored.
Dude..you express the same feelings as me to. the. tee. I never thought I would feel the same feelings as I did the first time hearing stairway. Much respect 🙌
Hey man, great reaction, very emotional! My sister and I watched this together, live. She said she wanted this played at her funeral.I played it off, like, sis you ain't goin nowhere any time fast. She died a year later and as her wish I played this song at her services.
It is like looking at the face of God. So beautiful that it is almost too much to bear. I have seen this many times and it evokes deep feeling every single time. I grew up listening to Led Zeppelin and Heart back in the day and love them both for the music they have blessed us with.
I totally agree with you about the annoying and unnecessary “better” comparison games. And Ann &Nancy would say “NO WAY are we ‘better’!” They *adore* Led Zeppelin! That being said, I don’t think anyone can ever *honor* LZ like Heart can... try Ann & Nancy covering LZ’s “Battle of Evermore” , it’s sublime ! ua-cam.com/video/wShmbjqP3WU/v-deo.html
The best part of this video is John's, Robert's and Jimmy's facial expressions. It's easy to see that they were 'reliving' being in that time and writing/producing/playing this absolutely spectacular music. I love it. Thank you, sir.
I have seen this video several times and it always brings tears to my eyes. The tribute to John Bonham with his son playing the drums in front of the rest of the band is amazing. The Wilson sisters just kill it as they always do.
I’ve been waiting so long to watch you react! So many Reactors watch and love it BUT, didn’t know the magnification of this performance because they didn’t know: 1. Led Zeppelin was in the balcony watching 2. Jason Bohnam was on drums, nor know that John and Jason was the only drummers Zeppelin ever had! 3. Symbolism of the boiler hats. I actually got chills watching you discover this for the first time. Finally, a true Zeppelin fan discovering the emotion this performance evokes for what it is; a great Tribute.
They've been covering this since the 70s always great. You're spot on it's not better or worse it's just there. But to play it with John Bonham's son on drums and in front of the mighty Zeppelin. It's always kind of magical to watch.
Heart was an excellent choice for the honor. Robert and Ann's voice are Angelic. No matter what color or who you are this is one that reaches in and touches the soul.
I'm going to tell you something my friend, you are the only reactor that keeps it real.I have yet to see another reactor that don't think every thing they listen too is the greatest thing since sliced bread. They are just saying what they think we want to hear just to get subscribers.Just keep doing you there's enough of us out here that appreciate you.
It's great for what it is, a tribute and honor to Led Zeppelin, but they did a completely phenomenal job to boot! I still get emotional every time I watch this, and seeing the emotion on the faces of Led Zeppelin's band members AND the audience reaction just gets me.
An absolutely brilliant reaction. I have watched this so many times, and it pulls my heart strings each and every time. For my generation (I am 63), this song was our anthem during high school. And so for us, it's significance cannot be overstated. And yes, this version certainly should and does stand apart and on it's own.
You know what it is is watching the artist being honored so highly for such a great song that they did That's what it's so inspiring, the respect I'll guarantee Ann and Nancy weren't up there thinking "we're going to show you how to play this song" And Jason Bonham at the end looking up to heaven Both heartbreaking and inspiring. Bittersweet this world is. We should be just celebrating the goodness of life together and the gift of music that we have
Music is so powerful. Two versions of the same song decades apart that can both evoke so much emotion speak to how good the song itself is, and to how good all of the musicians on either version are. I write and teach poetry, and one of the things I've always said about poetry, which I think is true also for music, is that you can reach the broader audience in a stronger, more emotional way with very specific, defined images (even though it seems like on the surface that it would limit your audience and the kind of reaction they have). What you create is only half of the story for the audience, and the other half is what they bring to the interpretation with their own history. Something so detailed and deeply felt by the musicians themselves really gives you a way to sink your teeth in, emotionally speaking. Beautiful.
You can't compare the two, without the original there wouldn't be this version. As far as your reactions...I love them. When you get that devilish grin and go back to hear something, it just makes me giggle.
To be fair, it's probably one of the best LIVE versions. The boys were pretty wasted back in the day so their concerts included a lot of 'freestyle' stuff 😂😂
Thank you, I've been on that rant about "it's better than the original" dislike kick for years. I watched this in 2012 and i moved me to tears then and it still does each time I hear it. Watching it hit you like it does me was good for my soul.
You: "we created more beauty out of beautiful". That's without a doubt the best thing I've ever heard someone say about this rendition of STH. Thank you ... you nailed this!
Think of the background musicians that play everything at Kennedy center. They are amazing. I messaged a couple of them to say how amazingly talented they are.
Absolutely beautiful.....it speaks to my soul. I teared up with you my friend. I'm a new sub and I'm so glad I found you ❤ welcome to being a Zed Head!🎶🎶🎶❤
To Me, Heart was the only one"s that could have pulled this off!!! There is no comparison People have to remember these are tributes, not a contest!
Yes. Heart honors Led Zepplin. They were inspired by them. We might not have Heart if not for Led Zepplin. I love them both so much. Just, enjoy!
I have to absolutely agree you could never do it better than Led Zeppelin. However I don’t think you’ll ever hear a better more epic cover than this one. When you bring Robert Plant to tears and can get a smile from Jimmy Page and JPJ you know you nailed it. Great review
It's not better it's just the best cover I've ever heard.
Agreed, but even the fact it's a possible debate is such a testament to Heart.
I think it is better. To be fair, the choir puts it over the top. But Ann’s voice, wow.
It will make you change your mind.
Came here to say this. Since it's already been said, take my thumbs up!
Can't imagine anyone doing a better cover. Thank you for this excellent rendition on your show
First of all, I can’t even imagine how much guts it took to perform this song in front of Jimmy Page, Robert Plant and John Paul Jones. Like you said.... this was not better but it was a beautiful tribute to four of the greatest of all time.
Can you imagine the pressure? They crushed it.
Reading the comments elsewhere, Ann and Bonnie were terrifed about what Jimmy and Robert would say. They even considered sneaking quietly out in advance, to disappear forever. This cover gets so close to perfection, I can only say I am weeping within 30 seconds!
Especially when Jason looked skywards to his Dad at the end......
Absolutely correct! Well said!
When Ann's voice breaks at the end ("and not roll..."), that's what sold it for me. Goosebumps. Much like Plant's voice in the original.
That last verse kills me every time.
This version is gorgeous!!!!!
Plant is crying watching his best friend, John Bonzo Bonham’s son , Jason playing drums on this. And killing it.
Only HEART!!!!!! Excellent Performance indeed👍🏼🎼🎸💕💯
I agree man. Not better than original but best cover I've heard.

When Jason Bonham drummer (John Bonham's son) looks up to the "Stairway to Heaven" to his father 😪 every time. 11:16
Spiritual magic.
They did this song proud!
Heart has been performing this song live for over four decades now. They don't do it in every show but it's possible that they have done it live more times than Zeppelin did
I cry every single time I hear THIS version!!
To sit and watch Jimmy Page cry from appreciation and respect is NOTHING SHORT of LIFE CHANGING ❤✌❤
Thank you for the wonderful reaction
Kimberly Grimm Robert Plant
@@rocknroller77 I agree!!! All 3! Jimmie Page is SO CUTE!
Gotta admit, when that choir comes out with the hats, the water pipes break.
Go said what i have tried to say what made zep so great is they were like an all star basketball team every player was the best at what they did and there were no egos because everybody got to shine, but heart did a fantastic job all you had to do is look at page smiling it was worth a thousand words
One of the best Tributes I think I've ever heard!!! What a Fantastic way to Honor such Iconic Musical Greats!👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
It brought a lot of smiles and tears to the boys. Robert said he got emotional because they didn't know Jason was going to play. Then at the end, he looks up at the words "to heaven." This is a performance of a lifetime. Beauty perfected.
Music knows how to speak to our soul. What a beautiful and powerful song.
Rock legends paying tribute to rock gods
" Nothing will make me feel like I felt the first time I heard Led Zeppelin's Stairway To Heaven. When I heard that, man - that's life changing shit to me.." - Amen. Absolutely, the truth. Life changing! I will say though, that this is the the best cover I have ever heard. It was a glorious tribute.

They weren't trying to be better than the original. Ann just wanted to do it justice and make them happy.

I too enjoy watching Nancy play, so much passion.
Thank you.
100% best cover of this song. Hands down, no contest. They did LZ proud.
I'm saying it. This is a great rendition as Heart, and the world, bow to the brilliance of Zeppelin. Such a tribute.
I once read a comment to this video that went like this....”ya know what was under that big coat Ann was wearing? A huge set of brass balls for having the courage to get up there in front of The Original Band members and blow it out of the water!” That was perfect if you ask me♥️♥️♥️
Please, take any criticisms of your style of reacting and let it wash away into the ditch. You owe apologies to NO ONE !
Thank you David!!!
Your style of reacting is honest and heartfelt. I appreciate it.
It's not even just their interpretation, it's their literal lifelong tribute to their idols as they were coming up...
heart is one of the few groups that had Zeppelin's permission to cover there songs
I AGREE 1000000000%
Hearing the original and this cover is an experience every single time

The difference is between CREATOR and INTERPRETER. However, this is one of the greatest live performances ever recorded. Period.

How weird is it that I come back and watch this reaction at least twice a week?
I agree. This is the best cover of Stairway I've ever heard - ever - but nothing and nobody ever can or will beat the original!
"We created more beauty out of beautiful." What a succinct, incisive, and delightful summation. Led Zeppelin's reaction to Heart and Jason Bonham's performance says it all. And to think Ann Wilson did this vocal at 62 years old!!!
Remember... this is an HONOR show... and by God... To be the members of Zeppelin, watching this production of your creation, all these years later... in THIS fashion... yeah, I would say they were honored.

Even Robert Plant said that he didn’t like other bands covering Stairway to Heaven, but this did its justice. Made Robert Plant cry.

That look on your face is how I felt the first time I saw this, and pretty much every time I've watched it since.
This version is something else. I agree with you on this song. Greatness!
They've been covering this since the 70s always great. You're spot on it's not better or worse it's just there. But to play it with John Bonham's son on drums and in front of the mighty Zeppelin. It's always kind of magical to watch.

fuck the critics your a awesome reactor one of the best i have ever had the honor to watch keep on keeping on

Sir it's a true please to enjoy music with you!
If you get a standing ovation FROM Led Zepplin... you win at life!
You know what it is is watching the artist being honored so highly for such a great song that they did
That's what it's so inspiring, the respect
I'll guarantee Ann and Nancy weren't up there thinking "we're going to show you how to play this song"
And Jason Bonham at the end looking up to heaven
Both heartbreaking and inspiring.
The inclusion of the backup choirs, along with great singing by Ann and then toss in Bonhams son, make this such an epic job by Heart... Fantastic
Loved the reaction. Thanks for bearing a little bit of your soul for your viewers. The emotion was real and I felt it here just watching you.
That WAS one of the most beautiful moments in the history of music!
Ann Wilson = POWERHOUSE
i knew at the end you would say exactly that
Look at tears in Robert's eyes! Touching performance!
absolutely stunning
One of the most beautiful tributes to one of my favorite songs.
You: "we created more beauty out of beautiful". That's without a doubt the best thing I've ever heard someone say about this rendition of STH. Thank you ... you nailed this!
Gives me chills every time I see this performance
Think of the background musicians that play everything at Kennedy center. They are amazing. I messaged a couple of them to say how amazingly talented they are.
Brings me to tears every time.
Absolutely beautiful.....it speaks to my soul. I teared up with you my friend. I'm a new sub and I'm so glad I found you ❤ welcome to being a Zed Head!🎶🎶🎶❤
The willpower to not watch this until now.
ETA: I was privileged to have seen this in concert and it was every bit as good ❤️
Hope you realize how how lucky you were. Most of us can only dream.
Thank you for sharing.
rock legends honoring rock Gods
I truly love your reaction to this... Because I feel the same. And hearing many people do this... Only Heart gave it justice.
In my opinon this is the best live version i've ever heard.
Love this version! Ann was 62 when she did this - such an amazing singer, one of my personal favorites ;-)
Thanks for doing this!
Yeah for real 62!
