I found it so surprising how serious the Joker sounded when he replied “I’m sorry, but no. No. It’s far too late for that.” It made me kind of sad, actually. The Joker realizing that he cannot be saved is really what drives the gravity of this scene home for me. His one serious moment really made the Joker seem nearly sane. But it’s a false hope for both him and Batman. The Joker realizing this, made this scene so poignant, in my opinion.

When Joker said it was too late for him, he really sounded genuinely sad. Shows that no matter how twisted he is, no matter how many terrible crimes he commits, under all that insanity and under all that bravado there is a broken man.
I love how Joker was actually the first one to stop laughing insinuating Batman either creeped even him out because of how long he was laughing or that he killed him.

As batman has close to no emotions, and only fights for what is right, batman was probably just planning on using joker to fight crime with him, as not only would they not have to go up against each other, joker would be a formidable foe. Come the right time batman won't have any use for joker and betray him, letting him fall back down to the depths of insanity the joker is plagued in.
As the joker said, it's far too late for batman to help him. Batman would never effectively rehabilitate joker and would therefore eventually stop helping the joker. That's how I interpret it at least.
I always took that joke as the final straw. They weren't acting like enemies anymore, for that brief moment. They were acting like normal people, both of them, whilst contemplating the ultimatum. Someone has to die. And the only proper way for the clown prince to go out is with a joke, no? Batman's the last one laughing, his hands are on Joker's shoulders as the camera pans away. I always interpreted it as Batman strangling the Joker as his own laughter faded and the clown left the screen in eerie silence
I kinda always just assumed the same, plus my thought process was always that the entire point of the title “The Killing Joke” was meant as a clever nod to both the Joker telling “the killing joke”, and also that this is where Batman literally kills the Joker.
It’s definitely plausible because Batman has killed Joker many times over the course of the comics, movies, and games. I also think that Batman laughing at the joke is meant to symbolize that like Joker, he has succumbed to his insanity and will never be normal

Knowing that this is the last time we’ll ever have Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill as Batman and Joker is really heartbreaking. The meaning of the joke really drives home the fact that this is the last of Kevin and Mark together. What Joker is saying is that one insane person cannot help rehabilitate another insane person. Joker views Batman as being just as insane as he is and that’s the two lunatics in the asylum. The rooftops represent rehabilitation and freedom. Batman is able to make it across and is healed, therefore is able to live in Gotham as a crime fighter. However, Joker is scared to cross because he feels unworthy of being helped because deep down, he knows he’s broken and can’t be healed. The flashlight represents Batman lending a helping hand but Joker sees this as false hope. Joker feels that if he were to accept Batman’s help, he would do something along the way that would make Batman give up on him (turn off the flashlight). Therefore, Joker would fall back into madness. RIP Kevin Conroy, you will forever be the greatest Batman!
An extra layer to the joke is that the first guy fully believes that he is helping the first person, even though it's imposible to walk across light, adding onto how the joker is either doomed to fall or to stay on his rooftop.

The Joke is that Batman is equally crazy, he just not acknowledging it. A rich guy in a bat costume beating up criminals saying he is vengeance. Joker finds that hilarious. So the Joke is that both of them are crazy, and Joker doesn't trust Batman and any help from Batman is a crazy idea. In Joker's eyes, he thinks he is more sane than Batman and Batman thinks the opposite. Both think they need to fix each other, or at least share each others perspective to each other so they can both see they are crazy. So putting that into perspective you can now understand the joke. The middle ground in this situation that they can both agree on is either A they are both crazy or B they are both sane. B That would mean the rest of the world is crazy A the rest of the world is right, they are crazy.
This scene always breaks my heart from Joker’s answer. “It’s far too late for that.” Meaning there was a time he could have been helped and he realises it. Or maybe he’s known all along he went too far. One of the reasons he doesn’t try to get better is because he doesn’t believe he can. Or even if he does it doesn’t undo all the horror he’s committed
In the comics, there was actually an older story where Ra's Al-Ghul fatally wounded Joker, and Batman immersed the latter in a Lazarus Pit in an attempt to save him. A side effect of this was that it rendered Joker completely sane, but the enormity of all the atrocities he'd committed sank in and he descended back into madness minutes later.
When you live a life doing terrible things, comiting atrocities, you can look at your evil deeds as accomplishments. But the moment you have second thoughts, when you leave that mindset, all you'll be left with is a laundry list of sin, that you can never stop thinking about. Forever burdened by the past.
Joker saying "I'm sorry but...no" in a normal tone is so powerful. And the fact he repeats 'no' means at least for a moment, he himself was considering the possibility.
It's like he thought about all the heinous things he's done and decided there's no amount of rehabilitation that could make him forget his criminal past.
Also think if he was rehabilitated. Firstly do you think anyone would accept him? I mean he just crippled Gordon's daughter. The instant gordon saw him he'd propably shoot the joker without hesitation, or hed get the death sentence. And yes, batman could vouch but i dont think that would be enough. Cause alot of people forget batman is a VIGILANTE. He works with the police, but not for them, and thus has no authority with them. Infact some say hes more of an outlaw than hero. Plus say joker did become a good guy. At this point hes done so many awful things it would drive a sane man crazy with guilt.. So in a way, that would risk him getting more deranged from so much guilt and heartache. Basically joker knows hes at the point of no return, and to accept batmans help would propably make things worse, and no fun anymore.

The cool thing is about Mark Hamill is when they made Arkham series he said that he won't be voicing the joker again unless they adapt The Killing Joke to animation. They did make it an animated cartoon, and he indeed voiced the joker in it.
The eeriest but kind of subtle part of the whole scene is at the very end, as they're both laughing and Batman puts his hands on Joker, the camera pans down and as it does you stop hearing the Joker laughing but only hear Batman laughing. It makes it sound like Batman's decided to choke Joker out in that last moment having realized the two will never reach a truce.

What most people dont realize from this movie is the classic irony of this entire scene. Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamils final scene together as their respective arch enemies is one, the second being this is the final scene between the two where Batman actually strangles and kills the joker, hence the name, the killing joke. The entirety of their years long relationship ends with Batman making the decision to kill the joker and granting him the only thing the joker ever really wanted, to make Batman laugh.

I would disagree that Batman is offering "false hope". Rather, the Joker *sees* it as false hope, because he's afraid. Afraid that he'll get halfway back to sanity and just end up falling into madness once more.
Here's my take on the joke: Obviously, the first guy (the one with the flashlight) symbolizes Batman, and the second (the one that couldn't jump over) symbolizes the Joker. Both of them were in a shitty place, and decided that they wanted out. The first man (Batman) had what it takes to overcome it, to jump over the gap. But the second, (Joker) Didn't. He was too weak or too afraid to try. Batman, though, is convinced he can help Joker, and offers up a means to salvation. A means that obviously had no chance of succeeding (You can't walk over beams of light). However, the Joker is no less delusional than Batman, as HE also believes that Batman DOES have the means to bring him to salvation (As made evident by the fact that he doesn't question the notion of walking over a beam of light), however, even as the Joker has faith in Batman's Ability to save him (an ability Batman never had), he does not trust Batman to go through with it. So tl;dr: Batman does not have the capability to save the Joker, but both Batman and Joker cling to the delusion the he does. But even though Joker may believe the Batman CAN save him, he just CANNOT trust Batman.

I feel this scene is deep. Considering the history Batman and Joker have in comics and other forms of media that has extended from that. This scene for a fan of Batman could be considered timeless I would imagine. Great scene. Love it.
Last year they came out with a movie Batman vs Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and (spoiler) they get him to say cowabunga. It irritated me thoroughly. I very much disliked the ending of that movie.

It took me a while to understand the underlying meaning of that joke. The Joker was actually talking about himself and Batman. Batman's the guy with the flashlight.
I think it’s the other way. The joker is the guy with the flashlight showing Batman the way to free himself from his world of rules and accept his own insanity. But it’s Batman who cannot take the leap. The punchline is that the joker never finishes the joke because he realizes Batman will indeed take that leap. Then Batman does so by killing the joker.

there's a theory that the reason joker stops laughing is because batman did decide to kill him in a swift and painless way after realizing (through jokers joke) that he can't save him. they're both the lunatics, batman got across easily and offered the other one (joker) help but realizing he's al lost cause decides to reject the help. @@neutralgaming5054 I mean that's what's being heavily implied here. The Killing Joke is originally a comic written by Alan Moore, who wrote Watchmen and V for Vendetta. The last few panels of the comic also leaves you on a cliff hanger but it's definitely implied that Batman kills the Joker without actually showing it. The Dark Knight film takes inspiration from it - the idea being that the Joker kind of forces Batman into breaking his no killing rule here. In the film, although he doesn't kill the Joker he definitely crosses some moral lines to stop him from winning, like letting Harvey Dent claim he his the Batman, using the bat sonar on everyone's phones for surveillance and covering up Dent's murder/suicide.

Joker's joke is that Batman would simply turn him in if Joker accepted the offer. Joker's saying the only way this ends _is_ through death. And so Batman does the deed.

I think the joker sees Batman as the first looney who jumps across and he thinks Batman’s therapy is useless (like the flashlight beam) and even if he believed in the therapy he wouldn’t trust the other looney.

I love the little detail that the moment Batman starts to chuckle, Joker goes from chuckling to dying of laughter. The fact that he's told a joke that's finally landed really does something for him there, and it's kind of adorable.

The way Joker says "no.." and looks down closing his eyes is so spine chilling as we never see him come to sanity.. This one scene all that sanity is there and there was a bond of friendship between two enemies.. And when joker starts laughing at his joke, he looks down laughing not expecting batman to laugh, and we all see batman starting to laugh too and we're HOPING so desperately joker sees it, and when joker does look up, you can see him get that warm approval and so joker laughs even more heartily and you can feel that dramatic relief that he sees what we wanted him to see.. it's so touching

@@raflx4815 The reason why it takes a bit for Batman to laugh is because he doesn't find the joke funny at face value, but after thinking about it for a bit he realizes the parallels between his situation with the Joker and the situation the two guys in the joke are in. Once he understands that, then he finds the joke funny.

I've always loved these two. They have a beautiful dynamic. Batman may not kill people (anymore) and the Joker could have killed Batsy in so many different ways, in so many different scenarios, but he always fails. The joker has admitted on more than several occasions in numerous ways that with Batsy, there is no fun in his games. No thrill of the hunted. Batman has repeatedly attempted to help set the Joker's life back to a semblance of normalcy, and the Joker always refuses. It's like a symbiotic bond between a parasite and a toxic shark.
I think that in this joke, joker was trying to tell batman that he won't be able to help him because batman is as crazy as him, how will batman get someone to be sane while he himself is insane, and batman is laughing not at the joke, but because of its meaning, he understood what joker's message was, and he is laughing because he realized that joker is actually right

I think sth else. The whole joke was a metaphor. Both of them were the patients in the asylum so yes both of them Batman and Joker are crazy in their own way. The beam symbolized the process to get away from the craziness on the other side, safe and sound. Batman was the first guy who made it across because he went through hell and back in his childhood and kept his sanity. The second guy was Joker. Batman offered to “shine a light” across the beam to help him rehabilitate and turn his life around. But the Joker cant trust Batman as he is just as mentally unstable and obsessed as him but in a different way. The flashlight Batman uses symbolizes the guidance Batman is willing to give Joker to make it across to him. But if Batman were to change his mind during rehabilitation it would break the Joker mentally which is equal to shutting off the light while he is on the beam so he couldnt find his way back to his lunatic self or to Batmans side, lost in the dark vacancy forever. The Joker cant take any chances or risks but most of all he wont trust Batman out of all people to be the one to show him the light side of things.

i love this scene so much. The Joke is such a great metaphor of Batman and Joker duality and the fact that this duality is between two crazy people at the end. And the fact that Batman started laughing after he understand that neither of them could help the other but just accept their endless fight

Kind of. The Joker’s whole goal is to get the Joker to kill him. Batman is supposed to be this great man of choosing right over wrong. Batman will not kill. The Joker wants Batman to kill him because that will break his moral code, which then Batman loses.
Batman laughed. Genuinely. Once he realized this wasn't just a random nonsense joke ruining their moment of genuine person to person understanding. No. Joker was still being genuine, and made his first serious and perfectly sane joke. Sad as it was, that joke meant something. They _were_ those two men in the joke. And when Batman thought about it, he realized it was legitimately clever. Legitimately funny.

@@rebaav I agree. I first read it in comic form and I thought Batman stabbed Joker and I didn't even realize it was supposed to be open ended. It also makes a lot of sense to me because A) the murder would be in line with the joke itself Turning off the flashlight after just having turned it on; Killing Joker after offering rehabilitation, and B) the fact that Batman was pandering to Joker "maybe I've been there too" just a few seconds before the both of them caught Batman relating to Joker hurt his pride, so he killed him in denial. This is how I understood the joke. The joker tells batman that there are 2 crazy people in an assylum and they decide to escape. Implying crazy person #1 is batman and crazy person #2 is the Joker. In the joke he explains that it was no problem for crazy person #1 to jump over to the other building but #2 was afraid of falling so he stayed(was stuck). Like the Joker is with his insanity. So #1 wants to help just like how Batman tells the Joker he wants to help. Crazy person #1's solution is the flashlight so #2 can walk over it to the other building. This line is very important because as you know, you can't walk on light and crazy person #2 would just fall to his death. And the joke here is that because #2 is crazy he isn't worried about if you can walk on light but that #1 would turn off the lights halfway so he would fall to his death. Impying that not only does the Joker think it's impossible that Batman can help him, he also doesn't trust Batman enough and believes he would just let him fall to his death(insanity) again. And I believe because of this joke Batman finally understood Joker and knew he could never help the Joker and decided to kill The Joker and finally put him to rest.
When Joker denied Batman's help, he almost sounded sane.
Probably because he is aware of his own insanity and embraces it as an escape from his life. He’s perfectly capable of having sane thoughts. He’s just too broken to try anymore. So he chooses the insanity instead.

I found it so surprising how serious the Joker sounded when he replied “I’m sorry, but no. No. It’s far too late for that.”
It made me kind of sad, actually. The Joker realizing that he cannot be saved is really what drives the gravity of this scene home for me.
His one serious moment really made the Joker seem nearly sane. But it’s a false hope for both him and Batman.

As batman has close to no emotions, and only fights for what is right, batman was probably just planning on using joker to fight crime with him, as not only would they not have to go up against each other, joker would be a formidable foe. Come the right time batman won't have any use for joker and betray him, letting him fall back down to the depths of insanity the joker is plagued in.
As the joker said, it's far too late for batman to help him. Batman would never effectively rehabilitate joker and would therefore eventually stop helping the joker. That's how I interpret it at least.

I always took that joke as the final straw. They weren't acting like enemies anymore, for that brief moment. They were acting like normal people, both of them, whilst contemplating the ultimatum. Someone has to die. And the only proper way for the clown prince to go out is with a joke, no? Batman's the last one laughing, his hands are on Joker's shoulders as the camera pans away. I always interpreted it as Batman strangling the Joker as his own laughter faded and the clown left the screen in eerie silence

I kinda always just assumed the same, plus my thought process was always that the entire point of the title “The Killing Joke” was meant as a clever nod to both the Joker telling “the killing joke”, and also that this is where Batman literally kills the Joker.

Knowing that this is the last time we’ll ever have Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill as Batman and Joker is really heartbreaking. The meaning of the joke really drives home the fact that this is the last of Kevin and Mark together. What Joker is saying is that one insane person cannot help rehabilitate another insane person. Joker views Batman as being just as insane as he is and that’s the two lunatics in the asylum. The rooftops represent rehabilitation and freedom. Batman is able to make it across and is healed, therefore is able to live in Gotham as a crime fighter. However, Joker is scared to cross because he feels unworthy of being helped because deep down, he knows he’s broken and can’t be healed. The flashlight represents Batman lending a helping hand but Joker sees this as false hope. Joker feels that if he were to accept Batman’s help, he would do something along the way that would make Batman give up on him (turn off the flashlight). Therefore, Joker would fall back into madness.
RIP Kevin Conroy, you will forever be the greatest Batman!

The Joke is that Batman is equally crazy, he just not acknowledging it. A rich guy in a bat costume beating up criminals saying he is vengeance. Joker finds that hilarious. So the Joke is that both of them are crazy, and Joker doesn't trust Batman and any help from Batman is a crazy idea. In Joker's eyes, he thinks he is more sane than Batman and Batman thinks the opposite. Both think they need to fix each other, or at least share each others perspective to each other so they can both see they are crazy. So putting that into perspective you can now understand the joke. The middle ground in this situation that they can both agree on is either A they are both crazy or B they are both sane. B That would mean the rest of the world is crazy A the rest of the world is right, they are crazy.
This scene always breaks my heart from Joker’s answer. “It’s far too late for that.” Meaning there was a time he could have been helped and he realises it. Or maybe he’s known all along he went too far. One of the reasons he doesn’t try to get better is because he doesn’t believe he can. Or even if he does it doesn’t undo all the horror he’s committed
In the comics, there was actually an older story where Ra's Al-Ghul fatally wounded Joker, and Batman immersed the latter in a Lazarus Pit in an attempt to save him. A side effect of this was that it rendered Joker completely sane, but the enormity of all the atrocities he'd committed sank in and he descended back into madness minutes later.

Firstly do you think anyone would accept him? I mean he just crippled Gordon's daughter. The instant gordon saw him he'd propably shoot the joker without hesitation, or hed get the death sentence.
And yes, batman could vouch but i dont think that would be enough. Cause alot of people forget batman is a VIGILANTE. He works with the police, but not for them, and thus has no authority with them. Infact some say hes more of an outlaw than hero.
Plus say joker did become a good guy. At this point hes done so many awful things it would drive a sane man crazy with guilt.. So in a way, that would risk him getting more deranged from so much guilt and heartache.
Basically joker knows hes at the point of no return, and to accept batmans help would propably make things worse, and no fun anymore.

The cool thing is about Mark Hamill is when they made Arkham series he said that he won't be voicing the joker again unless they adapt The Killing Joke to animation. They did make it an animated cartoon, and he indeed voiced the joker in it.
The eeriest but kind of subtle part of the whole scene is at the very end, as they're both laughing and Batman puts his hands on Joker, the camera pans down and as it does you stop hearing the Joker laughing but only hear Batman laughing. It makes it sound like Batman's decided to choke Joker out in that last moment having realized the two will never reach a truce.

What most people dont realize from this movie is the classic irony of this entire scene. Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamils final scene together as their respective arch enemies is one, the second being this is the final scene between the two where Batman actually strangles and kills the joker, hence the name, the killing joke. The entirety of their years long relationship ends with Batman making the decision to kill the joker and granting him the only thing the joker ever really wanted, to make Batman laugh.

I would disagree that Batman is offering "false hope". Rather, the Joker *sees* it as false hope, because he's afraid. Afraid that he'll get halfway back to sanity and just end up falling into madness once more.
Here's my take on the joke:
Obviously, the first guy (the one with the flashlight) symbolizes Batman, and the second (the one that couldn't jump over) symbolizes the Joker.
Both of them were in a shitty place, and decided that they wanted out. The first man (Batman) had what it takes to overcome it, to jump over the gap. But the second, (Joker) Didn't. He was too weak or too afraid to try.
Batman, though, is convinced he can help Joker, and offers up a means to salvation. A means that obviously had no chance of succeeding (You can't walk over beams of light).
However, the Joker is no less delusional than Batman, as HE also believes that Batman DOES have the means to bring him to salvation (As made evident by the fact that he doesn't question the notion of walking over a beam of light), however, even as the Joker has faith in Batman's Ability to save him (an ability Batman never had), he does not trust Batman to go through with it.
So tl;dr:
Batman does not have the capability to save the Joker, but both Batman and Joker cling to the delusion the he does.
But even though Joker may believe the Batman CAN save him, he just CANNOT trust Batman.

I think it’s the other way. The joker is the guy with the flashlight showing Batman the way to free himself from his world of rules and accept his own insanity. But it’s Batman who cannot take the leap. The punchline is that the joker never finishes the joke because he realizes Batman will indeed take that leap. Then Batman does so by killing the joker.

there's a theory that the reason joker stops laughing is because batman did decide to kill him in a swift and painless way after realizing (through jokers joke) that he can't save him. they're both the lunatics, batman got across easily and offered the other one (joker) help but realizing he's al lost cause decides to reject the help. The ending was basically left up for interpretation so we don't really know for sure.

The last few panels of the comic also leaves you on a cliff hanger but it's definitely implied that Batman kills the Joker without actually showing it. The Dark Knight film takes inspiration from it - the idea being that the Joker kind of forces Batman into breaking his no killing rule here. In the film, although he doesn't kill the Joker he definitely crosses some moral lines to stop him from winning, like letting Harvey Dent claim he his the Batman, using the bat sonar on everyone's phones for surveillance and covering up Dent's murder/suicide.

I think the joker sees Batman as the first looney who jumps across and he thinks Batman’s therapy is useless (like the flashlight beam) and even if he believed in the therapy he wouldn’t trust the other looney.
it actually means that Batman's idea is also crazy and useless, just like walking on a beam of light.
and that even if the Joker believed in Batman's idea (that he could walk on a beam of light) he would not trust him.
I love the little detail that the moment Batman starts to chuckle, Joker goes from chuckling to dying of laughter. The fact that he's told a joke that's finally landed really does something for him there, and it's kind of adorable.
I feel like Batman forced the laugh to try and level with the joker. It felt fake to me.
Bear in mind, of course, that the reason the Joker stops laughing before Batman does is that Batman killed him.

The way Joker says "no.." and looks down closing his eyes is so spine chilling as we never see him come to sanity.. This one scene all that sanity is there and there was a bond of friendship between two enemies.. And when joker starts laughing at his joke, he looks down laughing not expecting batman to laugh, and we all see batman starting to laugh too and we're HOPING so desperately joker sees it, and when joker does look up, you can see him get that warm approval and so joker laughs even more heartily and you can feel that dramatic relief that he sees what we wanted him to see.. it's so touching

@@raflx4815 The reason why it takes a bit for Batman to laugh is because he doesn't find the joke funny at face value, but after thinking about it for a bit he realizes the parallels between his situation with the Joker and the situation the two guys in the joke are in. Once he understands that, then he finds the joke funny.

Honestly, Batman has been shown to follow people for YEARS after he starts their rehabilitation.
It's not just that he thinks he'll be abandoned, his chance at rehabilitation doesn't exist in his eyes. He says that much in the joke itself, as no one can walk make it halfway across a bridge of light, obviously, but no one can walk across a bridge of light at all anyways. The bridge just doesn't exist to begin with, like Joker's rehabilitation.

I've always loved these two. They have a beautiful dynamic. Batman may not kill people (anymore) and the Joker could have killed Batsy in so many different ways, in so many different scenarios, but he always fails. The joker has admitted on more than several occasions in numerous ways that with Batsy, there is no fun in his games. No thrill of the hunted. Batman has repeatedly attempted to help set the Joker's life back to a semblance of normalcy, and the Joker always refuses. It's like a symbiotic bond between a parasite and a toxic shark.

I think sth else. The whole joke was a metaphor.
Both of them were the patients in the asylum so yes both of them Batman and Joker are crazy in their own way.
The beam symbolized the process to get away from the craziness on the other side, safe and sound. Batman was the first guy who made it across because he went through hell and back in his childhood and kept his sanity. The second guy was Joker. Batman offered to “shine a light” across the beam to help him rehabilitate and turn his life around. But the Joker cant trust Batman as he is just as mentally unstable and obsessed as him but in a different way.
The flashlight Batman uses symbolizes the guidance Batman is willing to give Joker to make it across to him. But if Batman were to change his mind during rehabilitation it would break the Joker mentally which is equal to shutting off the light while he is on the beam so he couldnt find his way back to his lunatic self or to Batmans side, lost in the dark vacancy forever.
The Joker cant take any chances or risks but most of all he wont trust Batman out of all people to be the one to show him the light side of things.

Batman laughed. Genuinely. Once he realized this wasn't just a random nonsense joke ruining their moment of genuine person to person understanding. No. Joker was still being genuine, and made his first serious and perfectly sane joke.
Sad as it was, that joke meant something. They _were_ those two men in the joke. And when Batman thought about it, he realized it was legitimately clever. Legitimately funny.

It was mentioned, somewhere, that Batman leaning forward to put his hands on Joker was important and tied to the title of the film; Batman killed him in that moment and is why you don't hear anymore from Joker in that scene, so that's the "killing Joke(r)".

This is how I understood the joke.
The joker tells batman that there are 2 crazy people in an assylum and they decide to escape. Implying crazy person #1 is batman and crazy person #2 is the Joker. In the joke he explains that it was no problem for crazy person #1 to jump over to the other building but #2 was afraid of falling so he stayed(was stuck). Like the Joker is with his insanity. So #1 wants to help just like how Batman tells the Joker he wants to help. Crazy person #1's solution is the flashlight so #2 can walk over it to the other building. This line is very important because as you know, you can't walk on light and crazy person #2 would just fall to his death. And the joke here is that because #2 is crazy he isn't worried about if you can walk on light but that #1 would turn off the lights halfway so he would fall to his death. Impying that not only does the Joker think it's impossible that Batman can help him, he also doesn't trust Batman enough and believes he would just let him fall to his death(insanity) again. And I believe because of this joke Batman finally understood Joker and knew he could never help the Joker and decided to kill The Joker and finally put him to rest.
Thats why joker thinks about that joke. And before telling the joke he say "that reminds me"
