What do you get when you cross a pretentious french title with an actor who treats his fans like trash? I'll tell you what you get you get what you fucking deserve
This is easily one of the greatest performances I've ever seen. There's probably little chance that Hollywood will acknowledge this publicly, and give him his due at the Oscars. Isn't it strange that the media doesn't want a film to be popular that encourages anarchy against the elite. I'm not an anarchist at all, and was actually once law enforcement, but I can appreciate the sentiment of it. How can all the press be so silent on this brilliant movie that has made over a billion dollars?
@Ruben O. I was saying that the press and Hollywood have shunned Joker and left it alone at best. That's rather strange for such a well-acted, written, and directed film that has grossed a billion dollars. I mentioned anarchy, but in more of an anti-elitist role. People against the rich. I think that's about as overtly political as it gets...though Wayne does run for office, doesn't he... I actually for got that until you brought up politics. 😅
I thought the same fucking thing, I do the same shit when I get pumped up on adrenaline so it was so fucking easy to notice him doing it. Joaquin’s acting is out of this world.
@Jim Goose ah i see now... that actually makes sense. I guess in that sense this movie was catartic for many people who were mistreated by crappy higher figures
No thats when shit got boring just like this whole damn movie. You can totally see the budget of this movie. It's just a camera following one guy around and that's it nothing else. Honestly I think it just made so much money because of the anticipation not the movie itself. I know nobody that has seen this movie twice. It's just that super boring.
@@margarethmichelina5146 Yup. He thinks Arthur is just another fool. Most of the people who got mistreated like this never ever rebel. For Murray, it's just another day so he wasn't cautious.
2:50 Seriously you can look into joker’s face and see he’s thinking to himself you’re not even going to hear my side of the story or even cared why I did it, you’re basically agreeing that with those 3 men who almost BEAT ME to death.....now I look at you as one of them *5 seconds later* bang‼️
He almost says it like a child too. He looked up to Murray as a father figure in his absence of a father in his life. This seemed like Joker's realization that even the man he looked up to his entire life is just as awful as the rest of them. Very brilliant voice acting there and spoke a lot.
Joaquin Phoenix is soo fantastic. He seemed genuinely upset like he was about to cry when he said “if it was me dying on the sidewalk you’d walk right over me...”
What the joker is highlighting the breakdown of the traditional values in the west. The joker is as creation of the hedonistic selfish culture that is overtaking the west. All throughout the movie Arthur is failed again and again, hoodlums beat him up, thugs in suits do so as well, government shuts down his treatment and he has no family or support system to turn to. All through the movie no one helps him, people on the street walk by as he is beaten, his "friend" at work gets him fired because he is "wierd", and his family situation is all kinds of mess up................ the end might have been avoided if anyone or thing had actually provided support, instead they do nothing and eventually Arthur snaps completely.
I mean, he’s not wrong, comedy is subjective. Edit: I realize now that this comment I wrote over a month ago has caused a bit of controversy. This comment is not supposed to be taken seriously. I thank you all that liked and commented and I just wanted to let ya’ll know. Hope you all have a great day!
@Puckish Rogue well, deciding to engage in an argument with a guy that just admitted to killing three guys because he thought it was funny to do so...you're kind of asking for it.
Swapneel Patel while true, tomb doesn't fit the context either Plus if you listen closely to what he says he clearly says "tune" and not "tomb". They sound different when said aloud.
It's just a reminder that when you look for the "awful" people in society, you're going to inevitably find those who are "not much better" and then you'll start going full vigilante on them too-perpetuating the cycle.
@@desipop3654 This was a great movie - One of my all time favourites because of the character depth. But I watch Nolan movies for a different reason than a character study. This scene is a masterclass in acting by Joaquin Phoenix. You can feel the pain in every word leading up to the ending and the power and impact it has is incredible.
I will forever love how he refused to mention they were beating the living hell out of him and he killed the first two originally in self defense and went with how he felt while killing the third one.
The show is about people's rejection of actual reality in favor of their own take. By this point he didn't care anymore to try and reject Murray's presumptions. There's an earlier scene where he finds a photo signed T.W or something and he just throws it away. It's not important, no one around him care about what actually happens anyway. And in the comics... Batman is a detective.
He just wanted to be a hero, if he killed those guys in self defense and not for a cause... There is no cause to fight, no chaos, and thats what he wanted. Chaos.

It will never stop being hilarious to me that the TV's have no problem showing Murray's head being blasted, but also have a problem with Joker swearing.😂
That’s what makes this scene strangely and disturbingly realistic, that the final moment before he kills Murray, the joker talks over Murray and they interrupt each other. This movie loses those artificial pauses.
Exactly, also Its the jokers anger and how he's not being taken serious, murray talking over him as if murray himself is untouchable made me want murray to be shot. Just because he's kinda like a reflection of society, and he's ignoring his cry for help.
well. Robert Deniro thinks that Arthur was self victimizing himself to much sure his life was not good at all nor was it a walk in the park but lets be real many people have shitty life's and are dealt a shitty hand they don't end up killing people and being super angry and resentful just saying

This is just my interpretation. He's not unconscious. He's just sad that he needs to kill people. But he can't express it the way the majority of the population does. That is his sickness. You can say he regrets it but to offset the fear and other effects you feel after a murder he must laugh or he will go insane for real. Joker. the hero we deserve but did not know we needed. Fruck off Batman, this is the dark night.
The detailed analysis people have on the Joker is always entertaining. My interpretation of his character is that he could be anybody; just an average dude that had one bad day. Or in this case, had a life of hardships with no overcoming of obstacles and suddenly became the chaotic person we hate to love.
@@the4given196 Leto's Joker could have been awesome if he actually had screen time lol. You do realize there was actual comics of a Joker version like Leto's right? It wasn't just a random hipster decision by Hollywood.
@@kevinjung4797 Maybe I'm just old, but the Joker has always been a crook/criminal with a flair for theatrics. The Heath Leadger and Joaquin Phoenix characters are very far from the Jack Nicholson Joker that lends itself much more to the comics. Not that they are bad, they are just atypical portrayals.
NGL, that quote resonates with me. This year has shown me how people truly are. And it's frightening. Especially as a guy who always believed in and connected with others.
Joker 2 is a cinematic masterpiece, but it's not made for simpletons that liked Joker 1 because it was "cool". Joker 1 hit the wrong audience which is why this sequel is flopping. Todd made it clear Authur was never gonna be THE Joker that rivals Batman. These movies main theme is mental illness and how terribly society views it using Joker and its genius. Joker is not single man. It's identity of pure chaos which Authur created at his weakest but Authur is mentality ill guy that was treated wrong. At the end he's reminded the concept of Joker is everything his morale go against and he only wanted people to understand him but people only developed love for Joker, not for him. As long as Authur lived Joker couldn't which is represented at the end when someone else takes on the title with more unredeemable morals. The entire message and point of the movie were to expose fake fans. Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn essentially plays the audience-you are Harley Quinn. You expected a movie where Joker does 'cool' and 'bad' things, as you think Joker is supposed to, without ever looking at the person behind the persona (Arthur). When you didn't get the 'cool' stuff, you stormed off, just like Harley did. The movie perfectly portrays capitalism and its consumption-driven mindset. People are reduced to either being entertaining (the Joker) or not worth paying attention to (Arthur Fleck). This point is demonstrated flawlessly. People prefer to be entertained rather than engage with authenticity. When Joker is authentic (i.e., when he's Arthur), he loses, and this perfectly illustrates our superficial capitalist culture. Authenticity is dead-we don't care about the person behind the persona; we just want to see the Joker, the version we imagine he's supposed to be. Like in capitalism, we crave the flashing lights, the illusion of realness, not realness itself, because that's boring. When the movie shatters that illusion, you go cry on the internet. Harley Quinn doesn't just represent the audience; she also symbolizes the 'higher-ups' who wanted Todd Phillips to make a 'cool' sequel about Joker and Harley taking over Gotham, causing anarchy, and doing bad shit. This is what the trailer suggested-another masterpiece in setting expectations and then demolishing them. She wants the Joker because the audience wants the Joker; they don't want a 'loser' like Arthur. But Todd Phillips said no, and by doing so, he exposed the audience for what they really are: they don't care about realness, they just want entertainment. Now that they didn't get it, they're crying online because their idea of what Joker is 'supposed' to be has been crushed. To everyone who hates this movie: first, you've been exposed as fracking idiots; second, this movie is the perfect slap in the face to all of you. Todd Phillips gave you that slap, and now you're all storming off, whining online about how you didn't like the movie, or asking 'what was the point?' when the point was you-you are the point. The truth is, this movie was a mirror, and that's exactly why you don't like it. People also complain about it being musical which makes perfect sense. Ever wondered why Authur danced out of nowhere in the first movie? The reason it feels like a musical, is because thats how the joker sees the world, how he perceives it. Hes life felt like a comedy, but now it feels like a musical. it's also a copying mechanic and a form of escapism because he hates the world and created this bubble where he is funny and can make people laugh. He had a good heart but turned evil by society
@@sammyboy_samik3554you could've been brief and just say that you hate people who think different than you, it's all you are saying after all. Wrong audience my ass, so much money and effort wasted for some pretentious film, that boot must taste sweet, huh?

The reality is that Murray was never actually awful, sure he did make fun of Arthur, but that’s what every comedy talk show does, Jimmy Kimmel, SNL, hell I wouldn’t mind if Kimmel made fun of me on TV, Arthur just went through so much that he took it at a psychotic and personal level, Murray was never really aware of Arthur’s uncontrollable laughter, he thought it was just a part of his comedy act, Murray was never actually aware that Arthur was a very mentally troubled person
come to think of it one of them could’ve grabbed the gun from the desk after joker walks up to the camera and killed him, but of course that wouldn’t be fun
I don't know to what extent this is true but a couple of months ago a 85 year old photographer fell off in Paris and was hurt so badly that he couldn't get on hos feet. EIGHT HOURS did he spend on the floor and NO ONE helped him. Since it was a cold night, the photographer sadly died.
That's how I'd live. 100% true. Not EVERYONE gets their own kazuma kiryu who comes along, helps you as a kind soul and wishes you well. Some people can just enjoy their pathetic, tacky, perfect little lives! If I was being crushed by life, and abandoned like a homeless bum, even some of my own favorite celebrities and heroes won't always care! Some of them are just really good at acting and having fans, but some of them don't care about other civilian lives that don't meet their status, or aren't very stable, and are practically losing, like a bum themselves! They just selfishly move on!
It's very realistic. The producers want to cut it there but this is a huge moment for Murray, interviewing a high profile murderer on live TV is gonna get him big attention. Unfortunately it also got him a bullet in the brain of course. Also it can be pretty much assumed that the cops were on their way after he admitted to killing those guys, they just got put on standby because of the important nature of such an interview.

I bet all he had to do is think about his brother river and the tears would come out like nothing, but other than that hes a very gifted actor!

This masterpiece of a movie, acting, writing all undone with a shitty sequel. They should have just left it alone
well for me its only this movie because i havent seen the second one

“You’re laughing. You’re laughing!!” Robert is incredible lmaoo you can hear the disgust with Joker in his voice
His acting in this movie was beyond phenomenal. This scene especially gives me chills every time I watch it.... you could literally feel the hurt and built up rage when he spoke.
Wasn't there someone in talks to star as The Joker before Phoenix? I can't even remember because he did such a phenomenal job
Facts tho
Syrupy Beard I have no clue lol but glad that fell through
Quad Gym Big facts 💯
Not only that you see him shaking his legs after he shoots him than the rush settles in slowly and he laughs, this was fluently done and it was magnificent, the transition from an angry psycho to a calm menacing laughing psycho is beautiful
Love the way he laughs after he shoots Murray, it’s the first time Arthur isn’t suffering laughter as an affliction or using it to fit in when he doesn’t understand social cues. Powerful acting.
Bravo and thank you for this observation.

That face when he says "But you are awful, Murray"
That is a face of pure hatred and betrayed.
Look at his chin quiver and listen to his breathing, he has this kind of rage where he’s almost trying not to break down, everything done was truly exceptional in this film
ProDoucher It’s the face of an *ACTOR*
At that point I would’ve said, *”call the police gene, call the police”
Me? I'm awful? Oh yeah how am i awful?
Thomas Wayne Junior “Playing my video.. Inviting me on the show. You just wanted to make fun of me”
This scene is pure cinema. 4:37
That scene is 100% American.
"l kiIIed them because they were awful"
"You are awful Murray"
Here was the hint.
Murray should've noticed that when he pronounced his name in a different manner.#Mur-ray to Murray
Only good part of this movie was Phoenix's acting.
@@bunnyhop4938 then you watch bad
@@bunnyhop4938 it wasn't as iconic as people made it out to be. But it was a decent movie especially compared to the crap that's out now and even back then
@@bunnyhop4938 disagreed
The moment he said “You are awful Murray” he’s face shows pain and anger it’s just amazing. And then to close it he is crying and laughing holy shit
Yea Murray fucked up
that what he said broke my hart , we not all rich shit people lauging at us
Agree.
Not too long time ago, Murray was like a father figure and the top comedian. When he make fun of Arthur, while his Mom is in the Hospital he died a little.
When he said that line you know shit was going down
