  • "The Actor" is a 1968 song written by Justin Hayward. It was first released on their 1968 album In 'Search of the Lost Chord.' "The Actor" is one of Justin Hayward's signature love ballads. The song's lyrics tell the story of a young woman who falls in love with an actor. However, this love is unrequited, since she only sees the actor once when "The Curtain rises." The song prominently features Justin Hayward singing along with an acoustic guitar. Ray Thomas is also prominently featured playing the flute behind Hayward's voice.

One of FINEST songs EVER composed. This displays the true brilliance and talent forged by the greatest rock band in record history -- The Moody Blues. They are a class act. No one can match them and they will forever be unsurpassed in the genre.

I am 63 now and my late father bought this album for me at Christmas in the early 1970s. Whenever I hear the those sung words 'It's such a rainy afternoon....' I still feel a kind of ethereal joy and tranquillity which I cannot even explain. Most of the greatest bands were not as good as the Moody Blues.

I was on a hiking holiday with an organisation called the CHA at Llanfairfechan in August 68 [anybody who was there reading this?] and someone had brought the new Moody Blues LP. It was played a lot during that fortnight. Whenever I hear that haunting melody on the flute by Ray, (RIP) I am transported back in time to that holiday and the sixties of course. Justin , well what can I say, superb voice, songs and guitarist.I became hooked on them then and have been a fellow traveller on their journey ever since and I count it a privilege. What a band!

A first-rate and typical Justin Hayward masterpiece of beautiful melody that exemplified the Moodies throughout their career, along with that inimitable, full-blown wall of sound. Not content to just write a good song, they made listening to it an immersive voyage. The album this song is on, In Search of the Lost Chord, is my personal favorite. It's the second of the so-called Core Seven.

+Ellen Yarbrough You are the first to share such a note about the details we work hard to
incorporate into some videos. Yes, in my youth I did love the rain, and had a tendency to
run around in it until someone told me it was 'dangerous.' Ah, how caution always seems
to pick away at our youth and send us closer towards the pinpoint of a rational adulthood.

I remember listening and loving this song when I played "In Search of the Lost Chord" back in 1969. Heard the Justin Hayward sing his song many years later at Konocti Harbor resort on the shore of Clear Lake in Northern California.

I used to live in Holland on the North Sea. I discovered the Moody's in the early '70's in L.A. and their music has more or less been the soundtrack to my life. And this song amongst them all has always summed up both me and my great affection and admiration for their style of song. Justin, Ray on the flute, the whole band and their devotion to one another and their craft, they always carry me away somewhere and I love it. Thank you for the post. I needed to hear this again today...

When I used to take breaks as a music teacher, I would cruise around the corner to the McDonald's and fill up on fries and double cheeseburgers. Then I would play this and Tuesday Afternoon, Legend of a Mind through a portable CD player, but I discovered the 1/8 micro-stereo input plug on the headphones would phase cancel the front vocals if I halfway plugged it in to the CD player. Nothing beats the beauty of those background tracks. Chain smoking in total heaven.

My hat goes off to you for such a beautifully structured montage photo show accompanying this immortal classic by Justin Hayward...You totally get the essence of good video editing....too many others out there think that loading a series of disparate images per verse somehow lends their undertaking a degree of panache but it of course it doesnt-all they manage to do is overwhelm the eye with a lot of loud images whilst the ear strains to listen....You, on the other hand, have created an aesthetically pleasing, artistically sound work that offers thematic unity and artistic imagination as well as integrity. Thank you!

Perfectly stated Doyle. The pics./video flowed as one with the music, which I thought was the purpose. Duh, how simple minded of me.I've loved the Moody Blues since growing up in the sixties and saw them at the Denver Coliseum in 1970. It doesn't get any better than their incredibly versatile repertoire, from rock 'n roll to, as I've heard stated before, the smallest symphony orchestra in the world. Blending my two favorite genres. They've truly provided a bit of heaven for me these many, many years.I'm into classical now but still listen to them quite frequently...and this song is one my favorites.

    Hi Rick,
Yes, all you said is quite true. I have seen the Moodys live 3 times and each time there are multiple generations at their concerts. Probably with parents and grandparents, but for a band from the Rock era to have multiple generations of fans is incredible. They have a classical music background and influence that is undeniable as well. They are just a damned good band, and really there is no band like them. I love Pink Floyd and Yes, but not as much as I love the Moodys.

I agree about the Beatles hype (glad no one can come beat me up & any nasty reply I can just delete!), they were a totally talented group of grand musicians, but the comparison doesn't mesh with me. Probably because they were a different genera maybe? But back then everyone lumped all this type of music and these type of bands as rock n roll.... Now, I think we've evolved enough in our aesthetic to separate them, most of us anyway who know about real music. Thanks much Treasure for posting!
