Ray was such a talented multi-instrumentalist. His classical flute style certainly influenced many bands that followed... King Crimson, Genesis, PFM, and many others.
It is one of the perfect expressions of a man loving a woman. Most love songs, people don't realize, are broken love/hearthbreak lament songs. There are very few songs about a man successfully loving a woman. Ironic that. Probably the reverse is true. Lemonade. ;-)
My first real girlfriend in Junior high and thru High School (JUDY) asked me what made me fall in love with her. And I quoted Justin Hayward singing "The Sound I Had Heard In Your Hello" from this song.(early to mid 70s) Judy passed several years ago, and to this day I think about her, this song and that line..
RIP Ray Thomas and Graham Edge you both are truly missed. The whole band created a new way to play rock and roll music by adding orchestra to the band. No other band but Elvis Presley had an orchestra play the music along with the band. The Moody Blues will always be the best band I ever heard, and in the 60's I was a teenager so that's a give away of how old I am and how I will always be a fan.
A beautiful song for sure, I just saw Justin perform this last month, still amazing at near 77. There is some hidden message in this song, Justin won't reveal it but something must have happened in a broken love, I believe he was only 22 when he wrote this.
Brings me back to time of innocence. A time where you thought all you had was time. A time where I made best friends with a gentleman Mike and all though we don’t see each other we are still best friends. He calls me his oldest friend. If I could live those times over I would do it in a heartbeat.
A few years ago I had the incredible opportunity to take our daughter to a concert. Justin picked up his old guitar and started singing this song-I had tears streaming down my face. Our girls grew up on this stuff, we were married with their music playing-they have been a soundtrack to the best parts of my life. Truly, the best band that ever was.
Rest in Peace Ray Thomas (flute, plus other woodwind instruments) and Graeme Edge (drums, songwriter, poet). With your passing the The Moody Blues won't exist anymore. A very sad day in life and music. Thanks Graeme and Ray for your contributions and may your legacy grow evermore.
They are beyond good. Music just flows out of them like a river. Absolutely fantastic. Their music takes you on journeys like no other band, certainly my life.
I couldn’t have said it any better my friend! I saw them twice, once in 1981 at the Crisler Arena in Ann Arbor Mi. where an unknown named Stevie Ray Vaughan opened for them, and again in 2012 at the Toledo Zoo Amphitheater, I was cheering and screaming so loud (I may have had a little too much spirits, or just enough) but I caught their attention, Justin and John just looked at each other and laughed. (Hey someone had to do it lol) It would be the last time I saw my favorite band.
The only truth we know comes so easily and the sound that I heard in your hello I love you guys rest in peace Ray I just love you all a big hug I just can’t stop listening to this genius collaboration oh absolutely. I listen to a lot of Christian music which I love I see that you are there I love you so much my Moody blues no question you are absolute OK one more time I love you
Moody Jill2 I remember you from the Prodigy days. It's been quite a journey. The Moodies have been an inspiration my entire life. The wisdom in their music is timeless and universal, especially the Core 7. It's there for us to know, with Love that we can go; burn slowly the candle of life.
The studio version of this song is one of the MOST passionate songs I have ever heard. Yes, there are many love songs out there, however, if you look up the lyrics............OH MY GOD! Not to mention the passion in his voice when he pours out his whole heart to the woman he has become infatuated with because she said "hello" to him. I can't get enough of this song. This is the true romantic in me.
Wow, this brought tears to my eyes-so beautiful! I love the way the lyrics compliment the melody so well, and Justin's voice is heavenly. God bless the Moodies!
I found the Time Traveler set of CD's in the introduction in a thrift store, in perfect condition, a few years ago and I still have it. It's not going anywhere.
Beautiful and unusual clip of a song we dont see live that often a beautiful and timeless song and great to see the late great Ray Thomas play the flute in this song of which makes the song alongside Justin's lovely melodious voice and John's harmonies, a beautiful song...and a great performance in the studio live on this show. 💕🎵🎶🎵
OMG.....could NOT have said it better. This song is so beautiful that I break down in tears.....the Moody Blues have been my favorite musicians and will always be...they are totally in a league of their own - each and every one of them way above the others....sorry to see Mike Pinder not there....
Exactly the same sound that these guys were recording and mixing in the seventies as guilt inducing, delicious orchestral studio albums was just practically reproduced on a flute, a tambourine and a wooden guitar. I'll be damned.
Got to hear Justin sing this live at his solo show in St.Louis,MO last year...words can't describe it..I was three rows away from him..Magical just Magical..
The Moddy Blues have been my all time favorite Rock Band. I used to listen to them in the USAF beginning in 1974. They just have a very unusual sound. Part rock part mystical part prophetic. Love the Moddy Blues.
Wish it was the full version, totally incredible. Even john Lodge can sing the high notes and it complements Justin's intense vocals and the harmonies all sound fantastic !
I remember this. The band had just been in Los Angeles, California for several appearances. I missed the appearance at the Hard Rock 🎸 Cafe, but made it to the Tonight Show ( Jay Leno knew all of the words to the song - a true fan!), the Guitar Center and so on - everything thing was great and just over the top! I don't remember if this was the 1st time that they performed at the Hollywood Bowl, but the Band gave an outstanding performance, and with the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra, it was absolutely amazing. I think Peter Knight would have approved. They opened with "Gypsy " and already had the crowd standing up and cheering. There were many celebrities there and they were doing the same. We were already wondering when they would be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. No one at that time would have believed that it would take another 25 years. Thanks a lot, Mr. Wenner, for focusing on the heavy metal and punk rock bands, while shutting out more talented bands, because of your bias... The thing that helped the Progressive Rock bands, was the opening up of the voting process to the fans. The fans made it clear that they were glad to finally have a voice in who should be inducted and that great and sustaining talent is just what it should be about. It speaks volumes when a great band such as the Moody Blues is inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on the 1st attempt. Bon Jovi placed 1st in the voting, but it was their 2nd attempt. So, this speaks volumes - the rest of the candidates were not even close. I know that the Fans were beyond happy when the Moody Blues were finally acknowledged! I was at the induction. Someone hung a banner over the balcony railing that said it all - "FINALLY!" Thank you to the Moody Blues and thank you to the Fans - YOU DID IT!! Jaz Zander
@@janverdonck Yep and somehow exactly sync'd all their instrument playing. lol. This is NOT the original recording...it's obviously a live performance if you know what you are listening to and looking at.
Just discovered this video gem, having just come home from seeing John in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., ten days after seeing Justin in Great Barrington, Mass. The Moody Blues as a band was far greater than the sum of its five parts, but at least we still have these two individuals.
Most beautiful music ever made ! My all time favorite band from when they started! Thank you for the gift of your music and Justin's vocals and Ray's beautifuful flute... may Ray's memory be for a blessing to us all..love you!
The song is sung so wonderfully by Justin. It is better when you can get the full stereo effect. Not many bands can play a song on TV and still have it sound so good. I know that they were together in the 60's so in 1995 they were together longer than 25 years. Although Ray had been married to a woman for at least that long. Don't really know much about their personal lives. The concert at Albert Hall and the Red Rocks are awesome. Can't imagine they would ever have a "bad sounding " one.
Mary Liljequist: That would be 1982? Strangely enough, I have memories of this song from the fall of 1982. By then, this was a 14 year old song, but that was the time I discovered The Moody Blues in depth. I had just started driving and met my first girlfriend that August. I will forever associate this song with her... and will no doubt put a lump in my throat everytime I hear it.
BEST GROUP EVER ❤
Love the moodys with all my heart. There wilĺ never be a better band. 🙏🎸💕
I've followed them all my life through its ups and downs. Love their music 🥰
The sound i heard in your first hello....beautiful haunting poetic and blue.
RIP Ray Thomas. The flute was certainly an unusual instrument for a rock and roll band but it worked for the Moody Blues
Ray was such a talented multi-instrumentalist. His classical flute style certainly influenced many bands that followed... King Crimson, Genesis, PFM, and many others.
Worked wonders for Jethro Tull too.
🌹
...and for Jethro Tull too - another of my favourite bands!
My husband would sing this to me when we falling in love. Celebrated our 35th wedding anniversary in January.
Mary Liljequist Excellent.
Congratulations. I hope you have at least another 35 years together. Keep playing The Moody Blues.
How romantic he must be!
What a lovely song to sing to his lady.
Congratulations!

Sounds so beautiful. So long ago. Its now 2023.
Thank You, Moodys.
What a beautiful video! Makes you know that love is out there for everyone!
They really pulled this off in the TV studio live so fantastically. Sounds amazing all the way around.
Just tremendous....Classic& timeless, never to be replicated again
I love 💕 moody blues. Ghazala from Pakistan
A beautiful song for sure, I just saw Justin perform this last month, still amazing at near 77. There is some hidden message in this song, Justin won't reveal it but something must have happened in a broken love, I believe he was only 22 when he wrote this.
Ray had a lovely speaking voice
Brings me back to time of innocence. A time where you thought all you had was time. A time where I made best friends with a gentleman Mike and all though we don’t see each other we are still best friends. He calls me his oldest friend. If I could live those times over I would do it in a heartbeat.

Yeah it is sad....The ride was fantastic though
All of them legends
Rest in Peace Graeme.
beautiful! Justin when he signs, I don't what it is, but he's like an Angel when he sings, so beautiful and loving in voice.
What a cool bunch of dudes !
The sounds i have heard in your hello, as Justin steals the show.
Nobody sounds like them and nobody writes songs like them. Amazingly unique and talented group.
They are beyond good. Music just flows out of them like a river. Absolutely fantastic. Their music takes you on journeys like no other band, certainly my life.

I have been thinking of the line THE SOUND I HAVE HEARD IN YOUR HELLO for many many years and now you mentioned it. That was very nice
Dear Ray Thomas on flute! RIP Ray...........
Till we meet again rest easy Ray❤
Wow, beautiful song. Same live everytime.
❤
the Moody's picked the hardest song to sing and Justin nail it fantastic job thanks for the video!!!!😎

Perfect Song, so beautiful, Justin...🥀🥀🥀..
The best song from In Search of the Lost Chord. I loved it when I was 15 years old, and still do.
Of course you are my bright little STAR 🌟 I 3:22 LOVE “On the Threshold of a Dream” album so much! ❤
Celebrating 25 years together in 1995, some 26 years ago, And the Moodies are still together! RIP, Ray Thomas.
Absolutely amazing band, I love all the albums
Loving this. I always thought it was a hard song to sing. Justin does s great job. What a great band and i love Ray's flute.
Miss Ray and Graeme - RIP

Incomparable
A difficult song to sing and yet Justin and the rest of the band do it flawlessly.
It was amazing.
Amazing!!!!!
Yes! One of my favorite early songs.❣️❣️❣️
Most beautiful voice ever....Justin Hayward. Thank you.
No band could do it live like The Moody Blues
Wow, this brought tears to my eyes-so beautiful! I love the way the lyrics compliment the melody so well, and Justin's voice is heavenly. God bless the Moodies!
I was worried he couldn't sing it live. Just fantastic!
Beautiful
Brings tears to my eyes...that's how beautiful this song is....they are my absolute favorite musicians ever......
Thanks for this.
Timeless music
The wonderful and angelic voice of Justin Hayward! And of course the wonderful group in total. What a treasure clip this is. Thank you.
I Absolutely Love The Moody Blues!!! Thank God I have had them, Rush,The Carpenters,John Denver,Jim Croce & Bread in my life!!!!
Wow!
I think this is the song that captures The Moody Blues best. I could listen to it forever
I found the Time Traveler set of CD's in the introduction in a thrift store, in perfect condition, a few years ago and I still have it. It's not going anywhere.
They guys were the real deal great music and great band love them

Heard "The Actor" last night on "British Sixties Radio" on iTunes, first time in years, and the sound was timeless. What an incredible band,
This is one of my most favorite songs. Justin's voice is pure magic! And this live version is awesome!!!
HOW SWEET
Bless!
...The sentiment of this song.... so human... only Justin and the Moody's .... From The Heart......
AMAZING!!!
The Moddy Blues have been my all time favorite Rock Band. I used to listen to them in the USAF beginning in 1974. They just have a very unusual sound. Part rock part mystical part prophetic. Love the Moddy Blues.
Now that is an acoustic masterpiece of a song.
One of the best Rock voices ever! Justin is incredible
Rip Ray Thomas !!!
Saw them and the Fixx years ago. Such a great pairing and concert.
Hmm ... need to try the Fixx again.
Thank you for this beautiful song..one of their best, sung by the best voice of all time. Can't get enough of Justin..Love him to bits!
This is magic, after all those years still powerfull and emotional music.!
Wish it was the full version, totally incredible. Even john Lodge can sing the high notes and it complements Justin's intense vocals and the harmonies all sound fantastic !
A shame they didn't sing the second verse.
That's live TV shows for you. Limited time (hmm, "Limited Time", almost like a title that would go well with a song for The Moody Blues).
I remember this. The band had just been in Los Angeles, California for several appearances. never get tired of them will listern to them till the end of my days.
Happy Birthday Justin in 2020..
Just amazing...and listen to John's vocal soaring hauntingly in the background making it sound very much like the original recording.
I think this may be better than the original recording, although both are beautiful.
No band was better live, amazing
Not a surprise, this IS the original recording: lip sync at his worst..
@@janverdonck Yep and somehow exactly sync'd all their instrument playing. lol. This is NOT the original recording...it's obviously a live performance if you know what you are listening to and looking at.
Still has that transcendental message. I am so grateful that they put into music what I was living.
The Moody Blues unplugged!! ...love the song! Ray is in top form!
Just discovered this video gem, having just come home from seeing John in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., ten days after seeing Justin in Great Barrington, Mass. The Moody Blues as a band was far greater than the sum of its five parts, but at least we still have these two individuals.
The host is such a charming guy. This song transports me back to lazy summer days of my childhood
I am also going to raise my daughter on all of that music as well!!!!
Most beautiful music ever made ! My all time favorite band from when they started! Thank you for the gift of your music and Justin's vocals and Ray's beautifuful flute... may Ray's memory be for a blessing to us all..love you!

An amazing performance.
PURE CLASS .NEVER TO SEE AGAIN GOD BLESS THEM
My favourite Justin Hayward song. The words and tune meant so much to me when I was 15/16.
At 16 now, it does so much to my soul
Such incredible talent. Live and its sounds like their studio production. Their music just lifts you to another place. Heavenly.
What a song..
What a song, what a chorus....
Fabulous, one of my favourite songs, thanks for posting. In England we just don't see them enough
I'd forgotten this gem, shame on me! I loved it. And Ray.....sigh. Thank you for this Jill! Love to all! Deb(moodygirl67/berrygirl64) 7/13/19
this songs just reaches deep into one's soul....the longing....really nice to hear the unplugged version...thnx
I fell in love with my husband (of 36+ years) because of this song. He sung it to me and that was it.
Mary Liljequist: That would be 1982? Strangely enough, I have memories of this song from the fall of 1982. Yes! It was Charleston WV in late December 1981. So sad about Ray Thomas. We are losing to many of the great one's.
I love you, guys...thank you for such lovely music from a bunch of Veteran Cosmic Rockers...
Beautiful!
This was GREAT!!!!!! I love this song-a wonderful performance
Doesn't get any better than that, absolutely sensational.
Such a beautiful song!! LOVE Ray's flute playing and Justin's singing!!
Thanks Guys, for the beauty in your melody, and poetry..
