    The problem with limited slip is both rear wheels will slip on water or ice. You don't have one wheel to keep you going straight. I would guess most of the people you see in the cane during a rain storm have limited slip rear end. John in Picayune Ms 17 Cummins ram

    I will say that on my Ram 5500 I put the limited slip additive in when I changed the gear oil and it made a huge difference when making a sharp turn. From brand new the truck always shuttered when making a hard turn. After I changed the fluid and put the additive in no more shutter. Just a thought when you do change your fluid if it has a shutter now add the additive, if it is smooth now but begins a shutter after you change the fluid, try adding the additive.

      Thanks, I had my entire rear end changed and the shutter was one of the issues, just as your's on a sharp turn from stop. This one hasn't had the issue fortunately.

      The oil I used said it worked on normal and lsd diffs it said it contained additive do you think That would help it.

      Wouldn't it be because of having 4 tires in the rear? My 5500 has always done it the same way as the offroad fulltime locked rear axle.

      @@e.l.9589 once I added the slip additive it never shuttered again.

      @@TermiteBenny Right on. Mine seems to be more of the tires not turning at the same speed, and causing it to spin them.

    Thank you Marion. Would you consider doing a video on siphoning def out of the def tank? I live in AZ and it's hot. I haven't driven my truck much so the def is getting old and deteriorating in the heat. I haven't got any check engine lights yet. But I am concerned the def might be getting to end of life so I thought siphoning it out may be prudent and then put in fresh def. Why didn't they just put a drain in the tank?!

      Yes, I think I have a very easy way to remove the fluid.

    I contacted AAM - their representative instructed me - The TracRite GT (Anti-Spin) required a GL-5 Gear Oil - that contains No Limited Slip additive to perform as designed.
    Now days it’s a struggle to find a GL-5 that does not contain the additive.
    It’s really difficult these days - figuring out who to listen to & who puts Your Best Interest 1st.
    I went with Hot Shots Secret (Blue Diamond) PAO GL-5 S9 75W-90 - which contains No Limited Slip additive @ the 10K mile mark (Change to a PML rear cover) with no issues since.
    Red Line GL-5 75W-90 NS would be my next choice.

    Just noticed a wet area of this hub cover on my 2017. Rolled over 19k miles this morning. What type of seal is under that cover? Anyone else have this issue? To the dealer it will go. I want it documented for future reference.

      Wet spot is the 1-3 o'clock region. I could check torque on bolts, but it is still under warranty.

    • @MarionBlair
      @MarionBlair  5 років тому +1

      It's a rubber gasket. I would let them handle it if it's under warranty because I think they over torque them on the rear cover and the red Loctite on it makes it even easier to snap off.

    Marion dealer here in Alberta have increased the price per litre for diff fluid.....its $45 now so I am switching to AMSOIL.....75-140 meets the grade for my 11.5 axel. Any thoughts I usually change it every 20,000 km I only use my truck for towing.

    • @MarionBlair
      @MarionBlair  2 роки тому +1

      as long as it meets the mopar spec. The dealer says mopar has an anti slip additive but I don't know that for a fact. If it does, you might want to make sure the amsoil does. I suspect you'll be fine with the one you bought.

  • @AnytimeAssemblypros

    Thanks. Does a grinding noise indicate low fluid or time to replace the entire differential? Gets louder the faster you go.

    • @MarionBlair
      @MarionBlair  3 роки тому +1

      A howling noise would be ring/ pinion misaligned which is adjustable. A grinding noise is more than likely a bearing. If there is no visual fluid leaking from the differential it's probably ok on fluid. The cover needs to come off either way and find out where the noise is coming from. Low fluid would definitely cause bearing and ring/ pinion problems. Once that happens, adding fluid won't fix it. Don't let the dealer fix it, find a really good rear end shop that knows how to set up a diff.

    How ironic , I was just thinking on doing this service. By going with the owners manual they say to do it at 30k was it..? But shit look how clean that baby is. Hell I may go 60k then change. Now off to the next concern, trans fluid and filter. !@#$%^&*. dam 68rfe!!!!

      Jim, thanks. My son is driving around in a 2002 Yukon I gave him with 200K on it, original spark plugs, no fluids changed other than oil and at 175K we changed the water pump and coolant. That should qualify for some kind of record. I want to do the rear end just to see what 200K does to the oil. It's still quiet as can be. He runs things till they practically fall off so I may find a differential in my driveway one day. And we are worried about 30K or 60K ha.

      gotta ask. are you only ever getting one wheel spining or can you get both tires loose in low traction areas

    • @MarionBlair
      @MarionBlair  6 років тому

      Both wheels should spin with anit slip, Do you have a 4 x 4? Also, have you checked your vin number to get all the specs on your truck. You may have it.
