50 years ago in 1973 I was turned onto pot and the live albums Live Dead, Skull & Roses and Europe 72 by a friend's older brother. I was 14 and the music changed my life. Hard to believe it was 50 years but it feels like it was 200 years ago. I miss the 20th Century.
Thanks for settling a question I was asking myself, regarding whether or not I needed 2-different editions of Europe '72. I was fortunate enough to obtain a fairly decent copy of the original version a year or so ago, which required minimal clean-up to the jacket to bring it in at a respectable mint level quality. I bought the most recent release more so to obtain a newer copy, but never took into consideration the fact that they are 2-different mixes. So 'yes' I do find it necessary to own both, pretty much in the same way that I find it necessary to have both the old, and the new Beatles reissues as of late.
Funny, I was just going to comment that I bought E72 when it came out and made a large color drawing of Ice Cream Kid that hung in the room I shared with my younger brother. Glad to see you still have your Dad’s copy. Mine didn’t survive the carnage of my college years
Hey Now, Really great to see younger folks into the Dead. I initially got into the Dead by listening to Europe 72. My cousin Joanne traded it for a cassette singe (remember those)? I put Jack Straw and I was hooked. I'd always (and still am) into Classic Rock, among other genres), and my cousin said since I loved bands like Santan, Janis, Neil Young, she was surprised I didn't love the Dead. I had heard, Casey Jones, Truckin' and Touch of Grey, etc. I always liked Truckin', but had no Dead in my collection. It's so interesting that upon hearing very few seconds of Jack Straw, it was "love at first listen". From what I've read/heard, it was like that from a lot of us Deadheads experience. Based on your review, I'm going to order the new one. I the copy from my cousin to someone years ago, and never got it back. The Dead have been so important in my life, and I'm thrilled there is so much out there to listen to/purchase. Keep up the great work. I've subscribed to your channel. and I look forward to future videos. Johnny K.
Right, I had remembered seeing Europe '72 around since back in High School, when all I knew about the Grateful Dead was that they had a fanatical fanbase, and that they venerated for their live sets. I decided to see what all of the fuss was around 1984 and picked-up Europe '72 to take home and give it a serious listen for myself. I must say that I was immediately surprised when I heard their music, because it wasn't anything like what I had thought. I was expecting a heavy hard rock band, and they sounded rather countrified by comparison. However, after shelving it, I dug it out again to play a song that stuck in my head, and I've been playing the set every since then.
Back in the day Warners did a lot of great promotional stuff, in particular compilation albums to promote their new artists. Some of these cuts are rarities and not on the artist's releases. Albums such as Warners The Big Ball and others.
Was wondering the sound quality comparison to the rainbow edition and the VMP CB -mastered version? Were both done by Bellman? I don't see the "CB" initials in the rainbow one...
For buying vinyl and CDs, I go to - dead.net musicdirect.com elusivedisc.com For high quality streaming, I like Apple Music. Tidal is better quality but more expensive, and Spotify has a similar catalog, but they don’t offer lossless streaming. For everything else, there’s the Relisten app which is fantastic for soundboard and audience tapes from every era. I have family who love the Grateful Dead channel on Sirius / XM as well, but I don’t pay for that subscription.
The one in 2021 was done in dsd analog to MQA back to dsd and then on to 8track cassette played in a 1977 van with cork and mirror walls and yellow shag carpet and then back into MQA and then digitized again and sent to Berny grundmen who did a seance and rose Rudy van gelder from the dead and had him extra-master it but Rudy was like th boy in pet cemetery and was rude and violent and dumb so they melted him down into the laquer and Berny grundmen took and had jack white press it at 3rd man records but there was a twist...they accidentally sent it to jack black instead who is friemds with Berny Grundman and grundmen said he's laughing at all the bullshit and had already remastered it and was just fucking with everyone and then he and Jack black went into th 1977 Chevy van and made sweet sweet love.
I have not purchased the new, digital plangent process, anniversary because i would rather have the original AAA flaws and all. I may get it, I do have some other plangent GD LP's,
Warner Brothers vinyl quality around 1971 to 1975 was absolutely tops. Mastering was done at Artisan for Europe '72 on original release, another great mastering house. So careful about knocking WB "greenies" just because you can. Oh by the way, what about speed problems on original pressings? I never did hear about that. I guess I missed it when you went into detail on that said issue.
Two big identifiers - Many online retailers are explicitly advertising the "New 50th anniversary" version, but there is also a 2022 copyright on the spine of the new edition. I haven't seen the 2011 pressing (thought I've heard good things about it), but I would assume there is a 2011 copyright printed on the spine of that one.
Been a Deadhead since eating my first hit of Orange Sunshine, summer of 1970. Can't remember all the shows; some great, some not. And I've seen a bunch of great Dead & Co. shows, but have seen my last. When Bobby cancelled last year's Dead & Co. shows in Florida, ostensibly due to 'logistic problems' but actually due to his hatred for our governor and his covid policies, I said Enough. Music was neutral ground for Jerry: I figured he must've bene spinning in his grave, as he hated being told what to do - and wouldn't think of telling anyone else what to do. Of course, Bobby's always been a Lefty, and an increasingly hardcore one as he ages. I don't want to hear his or any other musician's politics, even if they agree with mine. Just play that funky music...
Ya bobby, stop having and vocalizing your opinions, be quiet and play that guitar. To the original poster of the comment. You are free to say your mind. You will be left alone to find your own way home. And if you don't want bobby to speak his political mind. I would like you to stop guessing what Jerry would be doing if he was around.

The insert was on regular paper and stapled as a booklet. It was one of my favorite things about the album.

Love your videos, but I'm a bit surprised you didn't know that booklet also came with the original 1972 LP

Thanks for the video! This was very interesting
Sticking w my original. It took years but I was able to upgrade to a near mint copy.

Love Europe 72. My UK 70's copy has the insert so . I'd assume it was in with the original. Take care ✌
Yeah I have two of them that booklet is definitely in the original

Get the 8 track tape version.
Other than this anniversary edition being on color, how is this edition different from the remaster that was released in 2021?

Like the overview!
Hope you get your dark star! So bummed I missed the boat on the rainbow vinyl, but it’s so hard to get them all right?
