Thanks for your video. I was really happy to see a Grateful Dead Box-Set come out that seemed aimed at giving back to the fans. Typically the sets are 5-LPs (with one etched side) and skyrocket to $400+ shortly after release. I bought this back in mid August 2023, and it's still available for less than $150, and once again that's for 8-LPs of primo Grateful Dead. Furthermore, it features the legendary pairing with the Allman Brothers for some numbers. I LOVE IT!
I was at that show, I had just turned 18 in Oct '72 and the album Europe '72 had come out in '73. Me and a couple of friends drove down to DC from NY to RFK stadium. It was about 110 degrees out on the field in front of the stage and Wet Willie was the opening band. I remember they had a garden hose and were spraying the crowd, that water felt so good. After that the Allman Bros played next, I thought they were having an off day and was glad when they finished. I had gone there to see The Dead and I was happy when it got dark and cooled off and they started playing. The sound system they had was like nothing I had ever seen before, I counted 16 cabinets on each side of the stage, the notes from the bass guitar would hit you in the chest like a 3 pound hammer. If I remember correctly PigPen was still playing with the band then but it was the first time I saw The Dead so I could be wrong plus it was 50 years ago. I've seen The Dead a few times since that show but that night was the best.
Yes this was a fantastic night! Ron "Pigpen" McKernan unfortunately wasn't able to make it to the show due to his poor health. At the end of this concert for the last 3 songs I believe the Allman Brothers band comes out and jams with the Dead for the last 3 songs
I've lived in SF since '73, but I'm from MD originally and was at that RFK Stadium show - I wish I could have enjoyed it more, but it was so hot it was ridiculous - my girlfriend was pouring cups of water over my head, and it burned my hand to touch my jeans. Those are my memories of that show! But I did get a few photos (I'm a concert photographer, too)...
Oh wow! That is one element of these classic shows that these beautifully produced box sets can recreate - the heat and other weather that sets the tone for concert enjoyment (or, in some cases, frustration).
I think my honest opinion on these reviews is even more important now. I love the Grateful Dead and I want to praise the great releases as much as possible, but if there is a quality issue, I want to bring attention to that. Rhino and Grateful Dead Productions can only fix problems if they are aware of them, so fake positivity would be bad for everyone.
This set is fantastic! It’s beautifully done and the quality is great on the LPs. The second Dave’s Picks set they sent me was clean and had the liner notes. I’m wondering if there is another Dave’s Picks vinyl being released this year?
The Grateful Dead Almanac (annual email newsletter from dead.net) that was sent out at the end of 2022 teased two Dave's Picks vinyl releases for this year. I'm really curious to see what it will be!
@@PureGerry I’m excited as well! Also I wanted to thank you for making me aware of the new Dicks Picks Volume 1 vinyl. I actually just received it today.
It’s an interesting question and hard to tell. Both the Rocktober release and the 50th Anniversary edition are advertised as “Mastered by David Glasser,” but the new release also advertises plangent processing (which I don’t believe the 2018 release has). I would suspect they do something new with this 50th anniversary release, but I would not expect it to be radically different.
@@PureGerry Thanks for the response. Regarding the RFK vinyl, do you notice the vocals being pretty low in the mix at times? Is this just the nature of the recording?

Not to quibble, but I think Pigpen had died a little earlier ...
Really enjoying these videos!

Do you believe the "50th anniversary" for Wake of the Flood will really be a different master than the one from 2018 "Rocktober" release?
