Hey Mazzy. I wore out Europe 72 when I was in college, absolutely love it. The only other Dead lp that I may like a touch more is Reckoning. I was a touring Dead Head from 1987-1995, traveled coast to coast. Peace.
Europe 72 was a great LP, it has a lot of at the time, new songs, great new songs that never got recorded in the studio , it has this great ragtime Americana blues feel totally unique, I love it, man I wish I had a pile of cash
Managed to see them 4 times on that tour they did two at Wembley, which were awesome...But the one on 26th may at the lyceum in the strand was THE one... Every Home Should Own The 72 Album
Was in the Bay area 75, 76, saw the Dead a dozen or so times, but the highlight for me was watching Robert Hunter perform weekly with the band Roadhog at a small bar, the Green Earth Cafe.
Jack Straw from Europe 72' is amazing. I don't envy much in life, but seeing the Dead live back then must have been a beautiful sight to see. I think you are a Deadhead, you might not know it all, but if you enjoy it and understand them, I think that qualifies as a Deadhead in my book!
Grabbed that album when it came out and also not a Dead Head. Never saw them live but love this album. Did not get the later follow-up. Was not aware that they augmented the recording. Wonder if this new release is augmented and whether it's analog or digital sourced.
Really enjoy hearing about the vintage San Francisco music scene. Only been to San Francisco a few times, never seen a Grateful Dead show, but love hearing about the stories. Thanks
Hey Mazzy thanks for this homage to the Dead and this exciting release. You obviously have a love for their music, so don't let anyone suggest you're not a Deadhead because you like E'72 more than Live Dead or whatever. I will say that the band most decidedly did NOT play out of tune 1/2 the time lol, though when they were getting improvisationally 'out there,' it surely could get cacophonous at times! At any rate, I think you should get the Lyceum box! Cheers
Hey Mazzy! Longtime fan of the Dead, saw them a bunch in the later years. Europe 72 is my fave, it's so perfect. I was born during that tour, but they didn't play that day, haha. Holy crap, I'm gonna be 50 soon.
Bought "Europe 72" the Friday it came out after leaving SFSU and stopping at the Wherehouse on Ocean Ave. on the way home on Bernal Heights. There was a quality issue, and I had the option to buy out of the shrink wrap or not. I couldn't wait and I bought it. Still have it in spite of losing a ton of LPs in a breakup. It still sounds great and the yellowing of the cover just... gives it character. Love the Dead, but not $600 dollars of love. I do have "Fillmore West, San Francisco, CA 03/01/1969" coming my way on LP in the next couple of days. Damn, time flies when you're having a good time! San Francisco in the late 60s and early 70s was a really good time!
Hey now Mazzy! Those guitars of Jerry’s sound too good!!! You were at the Winderland New Years Eve shows??? I got the dvd, it’s beyond beautiful! Jerry’s notes that he played can heal people! Wow! I bet you got some brilliant Santana stories as well! Great video! I’ll have to go check out the release video.
I think the Dead played perfectly in tune to what they were aiming to achieve. They tuned up with a slight but intentional disharmony that matched the imperfect but still beautiful nature of existence. Stella Blue, Wharf Rat, etc. celebrate imperfection.
Europe '72 was a go-to live Dead album of its day. I learned how to play "He's Gone" from listening to that album. I've never heard of Vol. 2. Thanks Mazzy.
Volume 2 is the perfect companion piece to Europe '72. Four LP set with 22 new tracks from the same tour, none of the titles feature on the original three LP set. Dark Star and The Other One are fantastic highlights. The packaging is a loving tribute to the 72 lay-out/fold-out cover art/booklet. Great job, Rhino!
Awesome video I've progressively dug into their discography over the years and this live compliation is definitely a high light for my collection. I think my favorite album of theirs currently is a white light label promo of "live dead" 1969
Hey Mazzy , WOW over 30 times you seen the Dead, I only seen them twice in '88 & '93 . I do love Europe '72 what a great live album I have Volume 2 on CD but do not play that as much. That new release looks really cool, if only Jimmy Page would take note on sets like that uggg. Enjoyed your review and passion for the live album. Cheers !!! -V
My concern about the Lyceum Box set release is that it's unclear whether these records will be sourced from the analog master tapes as an analog to analog transfers or whether this will just be a digital to analog transfer from the 91 mixes used for the previous CD box set release in 92. For what they are charging for this release, they should be clear about this issue.
All the Dead are analog and then digital through using the plangent process. All of the Dead’s archival vinyl releases after the end of the band have been done this way. And they are all excellent. If you read the details it states they use the plangent process. Google it for more details.
@@mazzysmusic that’s not accurate. For example, the 69 box sets, the American Musical Hall 75 and the recent 10/19/73 box set had lacquers cut from the original master tapes and are AAA transfers. Going from analog to digital to analog results in a compressed inferior sounding recording.
@@jbsaudio maybe not all. Just read up on it. Recordings that need help: The process basically uses recovery of the bias tone off analog recordings to "realign" the audio to the state it was in while being tracked or mixed. Jamie's Plangent Process has helped restore recordings of Woody Guthrie, the Grateful Dead, and Neil Young, as well as solving many film audio problems.
Hate you Mazzy. Thinking about buying the vinyl and I hate myself for that. Bought it when it came out, made my own poster of Ice Cream Boy that I proudly hung in bedroom with my brother, desert island album that means so much to me and never ever tire of listing to. Yup the art’s great, but six sides of heaven inside.
Hi Mazzy. You doin a great job i must confess. Please is there a way i can get Don Williams's albums in a box set or sumthin of sorts? I'm really in dire need if it.
I have the big Europe 72 trunk box with I don't remember how many CD's so I'm passing on that big $600 box, but I do like the three record set of colored vinyl also up for sale. Just for fun and a more reasonable price.
Hey Mazzy, no serious Dead Head would rate Europe 72 over Live Dead. Live Dead is the greatest live concert recording on vinyl by the Dead ever. And you were there in the cover art on your bike!
Hey mazzy may I ask you a question?? Is this set of music going to include that five record store days that that's coming out will it have that show in there as well?? I would hate to end up buying both..lol
In general there's sooooooooo much music made on the tails of the Beatles invasion say from 1968 to 1978 ( or even 1965 to 1975 if you want) it's just ridiculous ,, and absolutely historic...no other period before or after will yield as much,, not even close
It's funny "72 was always my least favourite live album by them until i got the complete 72 boxset, that was some listening, but i have a better appreciation of the triple since, don't think i'm going to go for the new box though as much as i would like the vinyl of it
I will not be buying this giant new box of Lyceum shows. There is more excellent live material available online for free than I will ever need in this lifetime. Still, I am glad this box is being produced and I'm sure there will be plenty of buyers out there.
I saw the Grateful Dead in 1970 at the Hollywood Music Festival in Northern England and they were not very memorable I’am afraid, I was 17 and the other bands playing that day were Black Sabbath, Free and Colosseum in the afternoon, it wasn’t the right atmosphere I guess! People always remember that festival for Mungo Jerry’s big hit, In the Summertime, which now sounds kinda cheesy! In fact looking back to those days, there was so much great music and bands I saw, that blew me away, it was hard to keep up with it. Only now in my later years have I the time to listen to the Dead and appreciate them more!
thank you for this Grateful Dead segment, Mazzy. 🙏
Hey Mazzy. I wore out Europe 72 when I was in college, absolutely love it. The only other Dead lp that I may like a touch more is Reckoning. I was a touring Dead Head from 1987-1995, traveled coast to coast. Peace.
Reckoning may well be their best album. Yes, if I could have only one Dead record, Reckoning is it. Peace ☮️.
I love To Lay Me Down and China Doll from Reckoning
It's a steep price, but '72 is the zenith for the band. Nothing beats this tour. I'm excited for the releases.

Europe 72 and live dead both are totally different and both are fantastic , a band with a lot more scope than some people realise
Was in the Bay area 75, 76, saw the Dead a dozen or so times, but the highlight for me was watching Robert Hunter perform weekly with the band Roadhog at a small bar, the Green Earth Cafe.

Going to play my Grateful Dead records this weekend. Got a bunch of them. Thanks.
Very stoked for these releases. Ordered the rainbow reissue of ‘72 and the Lyceum run. That tax return came just in time.
Saw them at Wembley Pool - 8th April. Enormous venue, they were miles away!
Long live the Dead.
