  • It is time for one of my favourite videos to make, and edit to be fair, yes its book club with Melanie Sykes and I. Aka The Frank Book Club and this month we have a right chat, and quite a few giggles, as we discuss the Italian literary sensation Elena Ferrante’s lastest novel, The Lying Life of Adults. Will we like it? What will we make of its characters, content and themes? And what will our pick for October, yes there is another one coming at the end of this month as this one got delayed, be?
Also there will be a premiere of this video where you can chat it through with me. So do join me for that.

Sorry I missed the premiere today, but this was another delightful conversation! I love your discussions even when I have no interest in the book. I have to say that Leave the World Behind still freaks me out and it’s been right around a year since I listened to the audiobook! Definite heebie-jeebies!

Never mind about missing the premiere. It’s still here for you when you’re ready. Glad you enjoyed the chat. We’ve found they can make people go off and get the book regardless of if we liked it or not. Very excited for Leave The World Behind.

So sorry I missed the premier! This was a hoot. You guys have so much fun together! And I adore the London Review Bookshop. I struggle with Ferrante and I suspect the translation aspect is a major reason why. I love Melanie’s passionate views about telling the truth. Very interested in your reactions to Leave the World Behind!

Ooh all will be revealed later this month with Leave the World Behind. Glad you enjoyed the video and never apologise for missing a premiere. It’s always here for you afterwards. I just wonder if Elena is not an author for me. Soooo many people I know love her.

@@SavidgeReads Yes so many people love her but she’s not an author for me and you know this reading thing is quite subjective.

I'm so intrigued that you mention Sapphic vibes! The whole time I've been reading the Neapolitan series, I've been thinking "aaaand kiss!". Ferrante really does female relationships well so I can't wait to read this one, too. Great vid!

Thank you to you both for a most enjoyable and interesting discussion on the book. I am now preparing a route to the book shop for when I'm next in London. At the time of my trip, I shall pick up a copy of next month's book choice.

I’m going to miss the premiere today 😔, but will catch it later. I’m very curious to hear your thoughts. I always feel like I’m missing something everyone else is seeing when I read her work. I’ve only dipped a little into this one.

Don’t worry. It’s always there for you afterwards. I don’t think you’ll feel as alone when you watch this 😉

I asked my local bookstore for an Italian book of interest, and brought "my brilliant friend".

Double entendres or Freudian slips are funny. Those were the days, "it is no one's business." It is really confusing when you have a big fibber co-worker and they contradict their previous fibs, so now I know she was just writing stories in her head, a real Shakespeare of fibbing. Maybe I'll save for Netflix watching.

This is so funny. I was married for a couple of years to a guy who fibbed a lot. I would hear him tell a story that I was involved with and I could hardly recognize it. He would embellish so much it was nothing like the true event. I guess he was entertaining but he didn't care much about the truth of things.

Hahahaha. I don’t fib anymore just to clarify. Hahahaha. Your colleague sounds fun though.

This is the issue. I find grown up fibbers hilarious because you know they’re fibbing but it’s kind of funny… but then where’s the truth and can they do it.

V much enjoyed the chat. Out of interest, you mention about some viewer questions, where does the chat happen? Is it on Instagram? Out is there somewhere else to comment and chat? Thanks... Just started Leave the World Behind 😃

I’m so annoyed…my husband had negative feelings about Leave the World Behind and put it in my stack of books to take to the local bookshop for resale. Now I want to read it, but it’s gone! I just texted him and asked why he didn’t like it (he’s downstairs 😂). He said it felt like a Netflix movie! He didn’t even know!!!! He said he’d watch it when I told him it’s optioned to be one, but it felt like a beach read to him. Have you read The Silence by Don Delilo…that was a short, weirdly apocalyptic or not (?) one that packed a punch!

Also, brilliant chat here as always and I’m never asking Melanie how I look in a daring outfit choice for fear she’ll tell me the truth! Jk…you are both so lovely!

      @SavidgeReads  2 роки тому +1

Oh no. Maybe it’s still in the bookshop and you might be able to buy it back, supporting the bookshop too. Also thank you for not putting any spoilers of Leave The World Behind in the comment or I would have wept. Ha. Huge tears. Funny he felt it was like a Netflix movie… as if that’s a bad thing. Some of them are brilliant.

We are both very direct. I think it’s why we get on, though with some people it could clash. Ha.

@@SavidgeReads I’ve checked as I go to that shop often…I like to imagine the owner kept it for herself. I did find a used copy of Maggie Shipstead’s Great Circle last week, so I feel like the shop gods smiled on me 😂. I often disagree about books with my husband, so I think I’ll probably like Leave the World Behind and I don’t know any spoilers… no worries there! And you are right about the Netflix movies! Looking forward to the next book club and I will get my hands on a copy of the book!

I loved the Neopolitan quartet so thought I would love this too but didn't. Finished it but by God it was a slog. I have a fear/suspicion that Ferrante may just have a Murakami pass and that anything she writes will be published regardless of merit
