Cartland romances of the regency period were my favorite reads 60 years ago. I found them highly descriptive and informative of society in that day and age. I knew Cartland was the grandmother to Lady DIANA Spencer, but being American, it didn’t click immediately what the relationship of Raine Spencer was in the family. Thank you for the clarification. I have read of the Brighton Pavilion most of my life, and seen an occasional drawing of it, but this is a first to see it in a photo, video of the actual structure. It is as magnificent as described. Thank you for the privileged view. More of these types of videos need to be produced and shown. Indeed, the sun never set on the British Empire, it was a light seen and felt around the world by those of British descent.

So many beautiful comments about Raine. She was truly amazing and I know some people who met her in person and say the most wonderful things about her. She used to be very dear at Harrods. She was really polite while working there and very nice to the costumers (rich or not)
I can't understand why Diana and her brother hated her so much... Wait, I understand: they were two boors!
Raine Spencer was far too grande for them.

Fun fact, : the song at 0:30 and 9:15 is - "I'm In Love" The lady singing this in 1957, then known as Mrs Gerald Legge, is better known today as Raine, Countess Spencer, stepmother of Diana Princess of Wales. Born Barbara McCorquodale she went through six different names. On her marriage to the Hon Gerald Legge in 1948 she became Mrs Gerald Legge. In 1958 she became Lady Lewisham, and in 1962 Lady Dartmouth. On marrying Johnnie Spencer in 1976 she became Lady Spencer. Her final name from July 1993 was Comtesse de Chambrunsung. she truly was an elegant, gentle, beautiful, educated, extraordinary, high class woman.

Raine would be very hard to live with. She sold many of the treasures in the Spencer home in order to redecorate. Earl Spencer allowed Raine a free reign. The Spencer children were appalled by the insensitive sale of their family inheritance. I really don’t blame them for hating Raine.

    • @RoseSharon7777

The back story....Althorp was near being condemned due to years of neglect. She sold the "treasures" to fix the estate and bring it back to livable condition and to ensure the Spencer Estate would stay in the Spencer line of decendants and not the tax mans gavel to the highest bidder.

I love how they put a filter on the camera lenz, to reduce the visibility of the wrinkles on her face... regardless of whether the viewers can see the actual design details throughout the palace pavilion. (Would it have killed them to hire a younger show presenter and let the viewers focus on the actual beauty of the Pavillion. Ridiculous to see how her vanity wins, instead of the viewing public actually being allowed to enjoy the amazing art and craftsmanship, when watching the show.)

This old woman is desperately trying to hang onto her fading looks, as it was her only claim to fame... afterall nobody in British polite society ever claimed that she captured her rich aristcrat husband, based on her charming personality or her gift for witty conversation. She was known to be an obnoxious phoney and a miserable ball buster and as Princess Diana recounted in her memoirs... her evil step mother was pure hell to live with.
