I pay a visit to the Althorp Estate, childhood home and burial place of Princess Diana to see the private chapel that she is rumoured to be buried in as her ancestors have been before her. Before that we'll visit the oval lake at Althorp House to see her "official" grave and mausoleum where I found out something that shocked me. Oh and surprisingly we get to see the grave of US President George Washington's grandfather! Who was Diana's relative!
The apparent grave of Diana in the chapel shows a re-cemented area of stone floor that was removed so that Diana could be lowered into the crypt, It was sealed 3 days after her funeral and Earl Spencer later said that he changed his mind after he got permission to bury her on the island of the lake.

Thank you for this video - I too visited this chapel and believe whole heartedly that Diana was buried here too. While we were looking for this chapel the village signposts kept us going around and around until a local police officer stopped our car and asked us if we were lost. When we told him we wanted to visit this chapel he told us the local villagers hated visitors in their village so turned the signposts around to deter anyone from finding their way, in the hope that they would give up and finally go on their way. He told us to follow him where he took us straight to this church. He got out and spent the next half an hour or so with us telling us how he ‘knew’ Diana was buried here with her ancestors. He showed us where the stained glass windows by the Spencer crypt had galvanised fencing on them to deter vandals - we came away completely convinced this is her final resting place.
There is no way her extremely heavy lead lined coffin plus the pallbearers that struggled with the weight of it could ever had got across that small makeshift bridge - the weight alone would have made that bridge collapse !!!!!
Yes - I truly believe this is where she is resting too. Thank you for your belief in this and showing us what we all thought all along !

This is the first time I've seen the magnificent Spencer chapel. I know that Diana had in her will that she wanted to be buried there, and I can see why. Centuries of Spencers are buried there and it makes sense she would want to be there, as well. Her brother knew this, and I sincerely believe she IS buried there in her family chapel. The island is a memorial site, but not a burial site. I'm convinced of that now. When I saw that chapel I just said, "Of course she's buried there. Of course she is."

I always felt a solitary grave on an island in a lake was such a very sad, isolated place to bury a woman who was so spirited and enjoyed the company of loved ones and good friends. She had enough sadness in her life IMO. I am more than willing to hope Princess Diana lies with her ancestors in the chapel.

It is the water table on that little island in the lake that gets me. It would be sopping wet mud and finally a deepening pool of dirty water once you got more than a few feet down, and that doesn't seem like a place anyone would choose to put a coffin of someone they loved.

When visiting relatives at Abergwili in Wales, my cousin told me they often hear the booming sounds of floating coffins (or presumably the remnants of coffins) sailing about underfoot during services when the vaults are flooded, but thats ok because one of our ancestors was at The Battle of the Nile, so "he's just carried on sailing" LOL

I tend to think she was “actually” buried in the church ONLY because the island spot isn’t weekly/monthly maintained to the elegance it should be. It gets overgrown every year or so. At her death DIANA needed peace and quiet which was why TELLING the public she was buried on the island was appropriate. Her death still hurts.

@@deadgoodwalks it’s all very cryptic, and to an extent I understand why. I think because of the tsunami of grief the public displayed they knew they would have to keep Diana’s actual whereabouts secret, throwing the ‘lady in the lake’ narrative into the mix to muddy the waters, so to speak. But thinking about how waterlogged the earth would be on the little island I can’t imagine they would be able to dig a hole six feet deep, it would be like digging waterlogged sand so as fast as they take the earth out it would be falling back in. And say they managed to dig six feet down, it would be full of water… so even with a jcb and a pump taking the water out of the grave, who would want to put their sister/mum/ex wife into a waterlogged hole? Ok so Charlie wouldn’t give a monkeys but everyone else would. I think you’ve solved the mystery and I fully agree with your theory that Diana is probably in the crypt in an unmarked grave. It’s something no one will ever know, and similar to the crematorium that handled Myra Hindleys body, if Diana WAS cremated the staff would have been sworn to secrecy

Diana's housekeeper Mrs Maudie Pendry ( who Diana loved) was shocked when she learnt she might be buried on The Oval ( The Island) because this is where the family dogs were buried, you can read her story online, she has now also passed away but has some great stories, she was devastated when Diana died. As a Northamptonian i have no doubt her brother loved her dearly and this is why not many of us think she is on the Island. These are my personal feelings obviously. From the beginning I and others believed that the so-called burial on the island was conceived as being an inaccessible location where people could come, without swarming the grave site, disturbing the actual grave or overwhelming the church. A grave dug on that island would have become almost immediately waterlogged so it would have been a total impracticality to do so. There is no logical reason Why Princess Dianna should be buried in lonely isolation anyway . Of course she is in the church with her ancestors. All else is subterfuge.

A convoy of jeeps and other vehicles closed down the town and the crematory was seen burning into the late night. Villagers said they all thought Diana was cremated and probably interred in St. Mary's chapel next to the ashes of her father. Thanks for this , only found by fluke. I was living near Althorp at the time of Diana's death. That big old chest would be the Parish Chest where all of the Registers of Birth, Death & Baptism would be locked. Probably dates back to when the church was built. Very precious item!
    1. "The Memorial" as it is being called is actually marble. It was built years ago - maybe 1800s - originally as a temple to the Goddess Athena. I went to Althorp so, so many years ago - maybe 1989 - and have photos of me, Mum, Dad & my family sitting in it. It was "re-imagined" for Diana. The plaques on the walls prob are wood as added so much later than the original building, and at speed due to her sudden death.
    2. The Viscount opened a beautiful setting in the revamped stables to make a display all things Diana. Photos, Toys, Film, Clothing etc - even her wedding dress. It was fantastic. Dont know if this is still open now. The House & Grounds were open too and I spent a lovely day there with my 2 daughters who were both over the age of 21. We walked around the Island & we saw the remodelled Temple remembering how it was the previous time that we had seen it. It was loaded with floral tributes that people were bringing as this was the first time that Althorp had been open & seen after Diana had died. It was a year after Diana's death. There were gifts you could purchase in a shop too. I still have mine as well as my tickets to the event.
    3. I firmly believe that Diana is in the Church. It became painfully obvious that there had to be a more secure area. The island is a decoy. A 500lb coffin could not be buried on the island. Diana always said in her lifetime that she wanted to be laid to rest near her beloved father in the Spencer Crypt. Her brother would not have disagreed with her last wishes.. He loved her so much too!
The island is the memorial but not the burial spot.

When you stood in front of the vault, with a straight look to that rectangular headstone, it came to my mind that she could as well be burried left of the effigy to the left. Because when you filmed from the side, with your extendable stick, you could see that there was empty space. The sun shines right in and the place is empty. I believe the island was selected as a supposed burial location because of the serenity, solitude, and contemplation of her life while gazing at the island… Finally away from any more intrusion in her life. The island is more symbolic as a location than her actual interment. She was an incredible woman who left a lasting love, respect and memories of her life! Thank you for sharing this lovely estate!

@@deadgoodwalks The idea of a serene and secure location does make the island burial applaudable …but not practical. The water table would be too high to allow an in-ground burial. The grave would become waterlogged with every rain storm. I think Earl Spencer quietly - in the dead of night - had Diana's body moved to the family vault in the church. hence the security and cameras placed there. The island grave sight is a nice diversion from the church and a tourist attraction for the estate.

It also adds romance & legend when you think back to King Arthur & the Lady in the Lake.
It’s a beautiful spot & a lovely thought that Diana has peace in death that she never had in life.
Earl Spencer did nothing more than the others that own massive estates that require huge expenditures on upkeep.
The “Downton Abbey” filming is a prime example. That family was able to do extensive work on the property because of the revenue the series produced.
Many of these families are hamstrung by trusts & entailments that, for example forbid the sale of art or other parts of the estate. And the death tax is unreal!
I think he did the best possible thing to keep all the juggling balls in the air!

There is no way she is buried on that island. Even with a concrete vault it wouldn't work. Here in New Orleans, because of the water table, all underground graves, by law, must have a vault. And when hurricane Katrina came along, guess what happened? There were caskets floating all over this city. So no, she is not on that island.

I've always found it quite a slap in the face for Diana that both of her potential burial sites are so plain and drab. Her ancestors inside the chapel all have monuments and/or elaborate effigies, while she must make do with a concrete slab in the floor. The lakeside memorial is as you pointed out, wooden and clearly made to look much more expensive than it actually is. The entire world would be completely ignorant of the Spencer name had it not been for Diana, her final resting place should have reflected that. Love your work ❤

Im sure when enough time has passed and in a lifetime past ours, this century gone, when no one is around that knows of her much, then and only then will they elaborate on her tomb. I'm sure instructions have been left for it to happen. Right now it would be a media circus 🎪 if they gave her what she trully deserved. She needs to rest in peace not be bombarded with the world constantly on her. I think the spencers have instructions in place for the future Earl spencer & family and probably even william & Harry to upgrade their mothers tomb in say 50+ years. Regardless if they're alive or not. The world is awful and history has shown what robbers can do to body's..people are sick in the head it would be horrific for Diana's burial place to be disturbed in anyway. I for one am glad its kept secret.

It's "plain & drab" by design - she was so popular it killed her - her family would want her to rest in peace finally & a huge monument wouldn't achieve that.
The island one is probably so flimsy because it can't support the weight of a real marble & stone mausoleum
