We've always been told that Diana was from an aristocratic family, but my goodness I had no idea it was to this extent. The Spencer lineage is quite impressive.
Oh, yes! Diana was born at Sandringham, she was a lady before she was a princess, her family is more British than the Royal Family. As a child they cavorted with the royals. Her dad was Equerry to the Queen. Her grandmother was lady in waiting to the Queen Mother!
Much like describing Jimmy Carter as a "peanut farmer" (he had extensive naval and scientific, background including nuclear submarines). At 500 years, the Spencers do not rank as *ancient* nobility. (The earl is my 9th cousin, 2x removed). One of my great grandfathers was created the Earl of Arundel in 1138 - a title now held by the Duke of Norfolk. He is the Earl Marshal of England - being the senior earl in the kingdom. He will preside at the coronation of King Charles.
I don't care who does it but James knows the history so deeply and I really think he should do a video chronicle sharing all he knows about the whole family. He is a true historian.
At a cost of £20 a head. Diana is buried in the Spencer Family crypt at St. Mary the Virgin church in Great Brington. It's a good money spinner for Althorp, just a shame she isn't buried there.
@@Samata-mo2jw He takes after his mother’s lineage more strongly than his father. Very odd for 2 children to both have recessive traits especially if their mother has DNA from Africa on one side of their family. Charles, Earl Spencer is a marvelous storyteller and family historian. I hope his children will look after Althorp with as much care and attention as Earl Spencer has. Althorp is a treasure trove of history and priceless artwork. Princess Diana did not step into foreign territory upon her marriage to King Charles.
This is a conspiracy theory. Her legal birth certificate, which cannot be fraudulent, states she is buried on the Oval Island at Althorp. When she died, Earl Spencer examined the area under the floor and concluded not only was there no room for her coffin, (her Will requested burial) but the security would have proved a huge problem. To date four lots of people have attempted to reach her burial place on the island which is covered in sensors. If you want to see her actual grave, it is visible on Google Earth.
Seeing the carving of their faces, and especially the portrait of Penelope really brings their names to life. Thank you so much for sharing. What a beautiful place to lay in rest for eternity along with your ancestors. 🙏

Charles Spencer is a really wonderful gentleman and the whole family have their feet firmly on the ground. He has done his best for his family and the staff who work for him. It’s one big family all doing their bit to carry the name into the future. When you meet him he is down to earth and incredibly knowledgeable. His love for his family both present and past he can share the lives with you. I found him to be a true gentleman and friendly.
Love listening to the history of the Spencer's. I never knew about this Spencer church. When he said he would be dead down there in the underground vault with all the generations I have little doubt Lady Diana is down there too & not out in the middle of that island by herself. She would be very well protected down in the vault
I some times think the same but also Diana was a larger then life person people were enamored with her they may of buried her on the island but as long as she resting in peace
Charles is so relaxed and deeply proud of his family’s lineage. This is interesting to learn about this side of the Spencer Family. I think Prince George looks like Charles, Diana’s brother.
Thank you for this! I find history truly fascinating and you're so very lucky to have your family history so well documented and to be able to be surrounded by all of that history is absolutely amazing to me.
What a lovely piece of history. I I’ve recently found some old photographs and one painted portrait going back 7 generations of my family and I think that his amazing and it still is only about half way as far back as this goes. Incredible!
Fascinating to listen to Charles and to see the vault. I'm still convinced Princess Di is in the vault with her ancestors and not on the island, especially after Charles said *all the Spencers are there*
As a lover of history, the thing I respect the English, Scottish, Welsh and Irish for is their extensive written history. The love of their history and their country is most admirable. I hope they never lose it, like we are here in the US. I can only go back to my great grandparent, on both sides of my family. I wish I could go back further. I wish my ancestral homes were available to me with a knowledge of them, my family and their history. In the UK, homes, that are hundres of years old and still standing, can be seen in sketches as they were and sometimes still are, in the Domesday Book. Their extensive history of the ownership of properties makes our title companies look like a joke!
What an amazing family and now lady Spencer your contribution brings alot of interest which is invaluable in making us understand the history of this incredible family
From my understanding, the Earl Spencer was protective of his sister and so hurt by the way she passed, This has to be where she was buried, I always thought how impractical it was to bury or entomb someone on a small island. I hated the idea of putting Diana in such an isolated place, especially since she hated being isolated in life. After seeing this and hearing what he has to say about family, I am convinced Diana i actually buried here. I can see why they would build a decoy burial spot for the public to visit.
Yes, it makes perfect sense. She did not feel protected while alive plus she would be with family this way. The island is for the fans and for tourists.
I stumbled over your site, and found it a memorable read. I studied British Empire history in graduate school years ago. My mother’s father and ancestors hailed from Somerset in the latter 1800s. Grandfather George came from a farming area and had 12 siblings. They came to the US at the time of the 1890s world depression. The eldest came first, found jobs in industry or in the dairy farms of the Ohio Midwest. Then they sent for siblings, and one by one brought the entire family over from England. My mother’s side came from German nobility and served in the Courts of the Russian tzars, the females served as ladies in waiting to the tzars. I was very obvious by the 1880s that they needed to get out before the world exploded in their faces. They were well off. They sold everything off those final years in Odessa and came to North America. Some of the siblings came to Seattle, Washington. The others traveled on to Winnipeg, Canada, a large farming/ranching region with German speaking Russians that they knew. They were considered to be millionaires judging by the number of buildings on their land and livestock herds. I was fortunate to have a second cousin to my mother write a history of the family and produce enough books that she sold them to all the relatives. Although we sort of held nobility titles in the Russian Court or ancestors would not be ladies in waiting. I found it fascinating to learn that tzars picked their brides from certain German Duchy noble families. Catherine the Great was a German born rindless from one of these Duchies (late 1700s). My Great Grandmother Elizabeth Schmidt married and moved with her husband to the United States and settled in northern Ohio on a dairy farm. Several f her siblings followed suite. Some came farther south from Canada to the Dakota Territories because land was relatively cheaper and occasionally less severe winters. Whether wealthy, landed aristocracy from a noble family as yours, or one of simpler background but with similarities, I found it fascinating to see we all live in a similar microcosm where family, ancestors, and heritage matter, and how we honor them in death.
The idea of all the family (17+ generations) being together in one place is amazing to me. My family members are buried in many Philadelphia PA cemeteries(Dad’s side) and towns and family farms in the U.S.A., and in the case of my immigrant ancestors, in England, in the Netherlands, in Germany, in Ireland, and in possibly in other countries.
Thank you sir, for sharing such interesting and personal insights about your family and it's connection to England. When you speak of past generations, I can feel as if I'm part of the story. What a beautiful place where everyone is buried and remembered. I hope you can share more stories of everyday things because you are a passionate historian and storyteller.

I'll be back in touch once I locate it because I am trying to downsize & am engaging in gifting items to people who'll appreciate what I have. Hopefully it will bring me good karma. Meanwhile, I bet if you contacted him & mentioned your family ties, he'd sign something for you.
@@hltvieira6354 you are so sweet. I thought about contacting him myself. Thank you for the push, I think I will. Knowing how much he loves history of not just the Family, but all history I love watching him talk of all history.
@@hltvieira6354 I have other royal family connections as well as it sounds like you do. Wouldn't it be cool if we were so close and related. It's strange, my 16th Great Grand Father, Thomas Kitson is obviously my Daughter's 17th GGF. However, on her Father's side, he is her 14th GGF, and also a GGF of her StepMom. Kaili said, "ewe, that's weird, that's probably where my mutant green eyes came from." She doesn't have the "Spencer Blue Eyes" like I and my Son, Anthony, (different Dad) have. Her Father has dark brown eyes. It is all so fascinating. Being out of work from surgeries since April, all I could do for Christmas and what the kids wanted were ancestry dna kits. So I did mine first to be sure it lined up with the tree I worked on for all 3 of us, plus my Stepdaughter, which is how I found out her Mom has the same GGF. It is all so fascinating.
"Storyteller". Anything to sell books.
I am sure that the remains of the Late Diana are in this church Bless you Diana
🙏❤💔
Nope, she's buried on an island on the estate
100%
Definitely, yes. In the church. Together with her father.
All I can say is WOW. Now that's a family history. Thank you for sharing this.
Althorp is such a wonderful place. It´s good to know it´s in the best hands.
Wow cant even imagine 500 history of one family line in one chapel. And what a chapel and tomb. Must of cost a fortune even back in the day. How beautiful it is. Exquisite craftsmanship of the carved individuals. Love the history. TY for sharing.
I would never be bored! How fascinating!
It is tremendous to listen to someone who takes so much interest in his family history and shares it with not only his family but all who are interested. As a just retired teacher, you both are tremendous teachers for the coming generations, giving the young and old fascinating stories to make history come alive. Thank you and please continue sharing with us.
Much respect to Sir Charles Spencer, he has dedicated his life to preserving his family estate and their history.
The correct form of address is the 7th Earl Spencer.
Protected from what? She's dead
This was excellent and deserves an in depth series.
Listening to what Charles said at the end, I suppose Diana must be in the chapel, like the rest of her family, not on the lake.
That's exactly what I was thinking.
She's buried on an island on the estate.
Charles 👎
@@cmc495 i think shes with her dad
I some times think the same but also Diana was a larger then life person people were enamored with her they may of buried her on the island but as long as she resting in peace
That is such a beautiful resting place full of Spencer family and English history. Lovely to see it.
Charles is so relaxed and deeply proud of his family’s lineage. This is interesting to learn about this side of the Spencer Family. I think Prince George looks like Charles, Diana’s brother.
I was thinking about their resemblance as well.
Yes he does
Love this program as an avid history lover. The Spencers are an old aristocratic family. Yes Diana is resting with them. ❤🙏💐 Helen from 🐨🦘🦜
Loving the history of #1508!! Would love a job like this!!
Incredible!
What a lovley heritage the tombs are beautiful.
Fascinating to listen to Charles and to see the vault. I'm still convinced Princess Di is in the vault with her ancestors and not on the island, especially after Charles said *all the Spencers are there*
I agree
AMAZING!! No one knows the history, completely love it,Diana im sure is proud of her brother. ❤️
Even tho she wasn't speaking to him before she died after he had refused to allow her to return to live at Althorp
Thank you for this history. Such a beautiful church, and very interesting historical accounts of the Spencer families.
He’s a excellent historian.the art work is beautiful
I want to know SO MUCH MORE!! Please Charles Spencer, do a series or documentary of your family history! This is beautiful!
I could listen to Charles all day , I love how he talks about his family's rich history , such a beautiful Gent ....Thank you 🇨🇦

Yes he looks after it withgreat passion
Amazing. I love the "stories" of family and history. So happy to have found your channel.
Thank you so much for sharing your family history with us.
It's so nice to know about such past history. Hope all is well with you?
From my understanding, the Earl Spencer was protective of his sister and so hurt by the way she passed, This has to be where she was buried, I always thought how impractical it was to bury or entomb someone on a small island. I hated the idea of putting Diana in such an isolated place, especially since she hated being isolated in life. After seeing this and hearing what he has to say about family, I am convinced Diana i actually buried here. I can see why they would build a decoy burial spot for the public to visit.
I’ve always though Diana was buried here.
Yes, it makes perfect sense. She did not feel protected while alive plus she would be with family this way. The island is for the fans and for tourists.
It's long been a theory that she is entombed here.
ALL the Spencer family are in the church.
Julie Watson.. Thank you Julie for sharing your story of your family history!! Fascinating !!
Very special thank you!
What beautiful stories and the way both Charles and Karen tell us, makes you want to know so much more. Thank you to them both.
Prince George looks just like Charles Spencer, especially the eyes
That is way too cool! How fascinating that his ancestor was ennobled by Henry VIII! Thanks for posting this gem!!

Such an interesting video. I was fascinated to hear about the knighthood bestowed by Henry VIII. Earl Spencer is such a good story teller. 👍
It was so cool to hear that from Charles himself. I had learned that on my ancestry journey, so it let's me know I am on track with my tree as a Spencer and my dna journey. I can't wait to watch the rest of your content.
