How to Format SD Cards on a Mac

- In this video we are demonstrating how to format SD cards for your trail cameras on a Mac. Cameron is using a 2019 MacBook Pro.
The first thing you will need to know when trying to format an SD card on your Mac is that the newer style MacBooks do not have SD card readers, so you will need a dongle.
Once you have the SD card read by the computer, at the top right of the desktop display is a magnifying glass or a search icon. Select that icon and type in "Disk Utility."
Disk utility will show you your internal and external drives. On the external drive you will see your SD card. Select your SD card and from here we can go ahead and format it.
To format the SD card you will select the erase icon. If using a 32gb card or smaller, leave the file structure as MS-DOS (FAT) which is FAT32. (This is the desired file structure to allow for the best use in trail cameras. Especially cell cameras like the Exodus Render.). You will have two options on this screen: cancel, erase. Select erase and your SD card will enter the format process. It usually will only take a few seconds and your SD card will now be formatted and ready for use!
If you are using a 64gb card and wish to use it in a cellular camera, you will want to change the file structure from the default ExFat to FAT32. To do this, its the same process, however you will select MS-DOS (FAT) instead of ExFat. Then select erase and your 64gb card will be fine to use in cell cameras!

I want to format but my sd card wot even shop up on disk utility or finder

will this effect any other files saved on my macbook? this almost seems to good to be true for me ..I’ve been trying every damn way to get my media player to read my sd card going to optima projector ..media player will not recognize files downloaded on 16gig sd card. i have digital decorations that i planned on using for my christmas light show. all atmos fx. Any help or advice you could give me would be grateful. this was a helpful video i’m just afraid to pull the trigger
Will this solve the problem of non-displayable more then 4-gigabyte video from camera sd card on the Macbook?
thаnk you
Sorry as I'm new to this but, once it is formatted to MS-DOS, is there a way to see the allocation/cluster size? Does it automatically make it 32kb or 64kb?
same question,got an answer ?
I just got the Macbook Pro 2021 and this doesn't seem to be an option when the card is inserted, it only shows MS DOS FAT, EXFAT, MAC OSJournaled and MAC OS case-sensitive Journaled. Is there anyway around this?
Depending on card size, you’ll want either EXFAT or MS-DOS FAT which is FAT32
@@ExodusOutdoorGear I use a San Disk 128GB for my ZV1 Sony I also just got but every time I tried following your guide it says operation unsuccessful due to partition or something around that lines
Hi! Did you resolve this? I am having the same issue at the moment
Never knew thid
Hi, what format do you use for 128gb mircoSD cards? Same as the 64GB at MS-DOS (FAT)
hi when I connect my sd card it goes to the internal part not the external part how do I fix it please.
mmm? unless im missing something, cant we simply format all cards with the camera itself ? go easy on me as I'm a guy that just switched using a flip phone.. and do you have a link on your prior vids that best explains updating our cameras using the sd cards..?
Great question Jim! An in device format is a little bit different than a hard format but it is similar to a quick format! There will be another video that explains the differences!
so will it delete everything on the card, I see all the files on the camera but when I plug my sd card into the Mac some videos show and others don't show ?? currently its in exfat
I bought a Sandisk Imagemate Pro 64 GB Micro SD card for my GoPro 5 to use also with my MacBook Air. I did all that you recommended, and when I put the Micro SD card into my GoPro 5, and tried to record video, I got a red warning banner across the top of the GoPro 5 screen that read: SD Card Error. In the format process, I chose Mac OS Extended (Journaled) instead of MS- DOS (FAT) because MS-DOS (FAT) didn't seem to work. My formatted previous Micro SD card would only work with my HP Windows-10 lap top but not the MacBook Air. The Apple iPad would show the pictures but not run the video as did the HP. Any suggestions?
yes me too
Why would you change the file structure on the 64 gig SD card? I was under the impression that exFat was for anything over 32 gigS?
We only mention that for folks using the Exodus Render Cell Camera. The required file structure for that camera to operate properly is FAT32
I attached my cam to a smart tv, ever since that, my Mac only shows a smart tv file… but I can’t view them. Any ideas?
How to I put the sad card in a pc?.
My SD card was split into two drives. Any way to recombine those?
Hey i formated my sd card and now when i insert it its saying > the disk you inserted was not readable by this computer
what dongle do you have?
@exodusoutdoorgear I flashed a 128gb image onto a new 256gb card. Now the new card comes up as 128 and is stuck like that. I tried this process several times. Any ideas on how to delete the hidden partition in there? Thank you
Can we format the corrupted and unformatted RAW sdcard through Mac?
Because windows cant format the RAW sdcard. Could anybody please help
Dongle???
Is it mean if I will change from ExFat to ms dos fat I will lose all information on sd card?
Thank you
Yes, formatting the card erases all of the information on the card.
my 2015 iMac slot is not even detecting my card what might be the problem
hello I have formatted my 129 canon sdc-128mh card and it stays in 16 instead of the ms fat format/ fat 32. any reason why?
it seems to take photos but not videos for some reason. I think that's why you were saying change it to fat 32 right?
This was helpful but my camera is still not reading the card :(((( I don't know what else to do. I've turned it off and on...cleaned it...ughhh
hey I have a muddy 16 sd card and each time I pull - there is zero pictures. This couldnt be possible at the very least there would be pictures of me. I checkd to see if it was set at FAT32 and I dont see that option. It was set at Mac OS extended (journaled)the only other option was (fat) which you said not to keep it in. Its frustrating and only with this specific card. Anyone with any answers? Also, on the Bar its showing some space has been used up but still cant view pictures when I check the card. please help.
It should not be in EXFAT- it should be in MS-DOS (FAT) which is FAT32. the Mac OS extended format is likely not a compatible option for the muddy cam.
Wont let me change it to FAT32 What can I do
What happens if it doesn’t show up in disk utility
I did this now my camera says it can't read the card to reinstall or format card with the camera...???
Make sure you formatted to the correct file structure.
What is a Dogal? Can I then look at pictures.
I tried to erase and format my SD card as you described-but then I get the message "Erase Process has failed"! I tried it several times with no luck! Any suggestions?
SD card may be ‘locked’ there should be a small grey lock button on the SD card, make sure it’s slided to the unlocked position 😊
Hello! Does the same apply for a CF card?
Also, is MS DOS fat vs MS DOS fat32 the same? both are showing up on my camera. What would the difference be?
The same would apply for the CF card and yes both options are the same. You’ll have ExFat or FAT32. Depending on what you’re using the card in will determine which file structure you need. However if you’re just formatting and not changing the file structure you should just be able to hit erase and not change the file structure.
@@ExodusOutdoorGear THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR HELP!!! This saved me a lot of frustration this morning! Very helpful video and response :)
