How to Format an SD Card on Mac and Windows?

Why we need to format SD cards? There are many other reasons that we need to format an SD card, such as SD card damaged or not working, compatibility issues, SD card runs slow, data security, file size restrictions, etc. So how we can format ann SD card correctly on Man and Windows?
1. How to Format SD Card on Mac?
First, make sure your SD card is connected.
(1) Open the disk utility, this can be found under LaunchPad / Other / Disk Utility
Or simply search for Disk Utility in Spotlight… The little magnifying glass in the top right.
(2) Then locate and select the SD card in Disk Utility from the left sidebar, then click Erase in the toolbar.
(3) We’re then going to give our SD card a name, then select the format as we discussed earlier.
(4) Then click Erase and let the computer do its thing.
(5) Once completed, click Done.
2. How to Format SD Card on Windows 10?
Method 1 - Use Windows Explorer
(1) Open Windows Explorer and locate the SD card in your drive list;
(2) Right-click on the drive and select Format;
(3) Select a file system according to your needs
(4) Then enter the name of the drive into the Volume Label field and start formatting.
Method 2 - Use Disk Management
(1) Right-click on Computer or This PC, and select Management/ Disk Management under the Storage section.
(2) Right-click on the SD card partition and select Format.
(3) Then set your Volume Label and your file system
(4) Tick “Perform a quick format” and select Ok.
However, there is also a scenario that you formatted your SD card without backup, and you need to recover your data from the formatted SD card, here Recoverit can help you with just 3 steps!

Hi Michael. I have a 64 SD card which works on an android phone, but It is not working on windows10. Actually windows can not recognize the card on the windows explorer and diskpart on the CMD. However ıt is listed on device and printers menu. What should I do to use it again

In my case, 'format' options was not available from both Windows Explorer, or Disk Management in Windows; and it didn't allow me to both from Ubuntu Folder, and also even with Gparted in Ubuntu as well.
on Windows, I get "This disk is write protected"
It feels like I may have encountered one of the really stubborn cases.
Have you seen this scenario before?
there should be a physical switch that turns off write protection on the sd card itself

Hey dude I got an sd card for my windows computer 2 years ago so it is now fully updated windows10 it's disk is full and I can't delete the files as they are important so I bought an sd card then I went to settings and set that all new content will be saved to my sd card but it does not save it there how do I fix this ....... Btw my format is exfat and there is no volume written idk if tahts the problem

Hello I am unable to delete file or format the memory card , it showing unable to format. If I delete the files after I refresh it I got all the files back , can anyone suggest me how to format the memory card

Hello what If the card is not detected from the system and diskpart doesn't load due to data corruption and you cant chkdsk to repair the card ?
I tried to format it to fat32 it worked and when I flashed an raspberry pi image on it with rpi imager it wroted/flashed it correctly but during verification popped up a problem. Then the card wasn't readable and it was corrupted. Please help!!! I may have destroyed 3 cards with this so far.

Hi there, thank you for your question! If you tried all the steps mentioned in the video Try opening up the terminal and running the following commands: "diskutil list" find the disk and type the following command replacing the # with the drive. "sudo diskutil unmountDisk force /dev/disk#" then run the following command to erase the drive: "diskutil erasedisk {format type} {desired name} {disk #}" for format type typically you use xfat then the name you want and the disk letter for the last.

People like me who came here to format a SD Card which shows "Windows is unable to format". Then this video is nowhere close where you want to be for your SD Card.
P.S- Try to format it in Linux OS or if you have a Windows machine, try "Virtual Machine" to install Linux OS temporarily and format the SD Card.
