Get Some Chop In Your M8 Harley's Idle
Вставка
- Опубліковано 22 лип 2024
- If you made the switch to the M8 Harley you know the idle doesn't have that chop you got from the Twin Cam engine. Now even with exhaust it still doesn't have a serious lope. Swapping to a bolt in cam will your M8 Harley the chop we all love and add some horsepower and torque in the process. Harley-Davidson M8 engines respond incredibly well to cam swaps with the 4 valve heads, power numbers are very impressive with just a cam swap. With the M8's single cam design the prices are like the old days when it comes to a cam swap on the Evo engine. It's not hard to get in the 100 horsepower club with a good tune and proper exhaust just by changing the cam!

What was your favorite cam for the M8? What cam are you running in your Milwaukee 8 powered Harley-Davidson?
Don’t know about the M8 but with the twin cam the woods 777 are a beast. 110 hp and 125 TQ. These new m8s can suck it.
I'd probably go for the S&S.
I'm running the Wood WM8-22X-E (but on a 128ci build). Great lope, great performance across the rev range. It's getting a dynotune next week.
I’d like to see something on the 114 for sure. These graphs and the info are very interesting.
Thank you! I have that video coming Friday!
A Harley should sound like Van Halen's Hot for teacher intro with more bass 🤘
Amen brother
Lmao yes yes it should
Anytime I play that song, my Daughter always refers to it as “the motorcycle song”
That’s the sound of a good cam and timing on a v-twin.
Somewhere between “Hot For Teacher” and “Matter of Time”
That’s a double Amen man love the band as well
This needs needs nine more likes
Personally I would go with the S&S because it makes torque right where I can use it. I don't drag race and my engine would rarely experience wide open throttle. Seems like cruising on the highway with this cam the roll-on power would be right at your fingertips.
That's exactly my thoughts as well.
Absolutely
Yup exactly why I got it
I agree about the “never full throttle”… been there done that, BUT I found out after trying one of my buddies M8 Streetglides that the “stock power band” until approx. 2000 rpms was sufficient for daily city- cruising and stop’n go traffic. My buddy had a Zippers 468 and I was really impressed when the meanest torque started around the 2000 rpm mark,… the heavy bike just took off with a true V-thunder out the pipe…I knew I had to have that 468 cam installed in my bike… and so I did and haven’t regretted since 👍🏻
for me I couldnt imagine owning a harley without the deep harley chop sound, I put a stage 2 in my 2021 rg 114 motor, screaming eagle cam, vance n hines power dual header pipe, n Reinhart slips, putting out about 117 torque at 3500 rpm and just 103 horsepower, but my Gosh this is the best n loudest harley as I have ever heard n has plenty of power for me compared to my last 103 n it ran strong too, my build now was to get a bit more power, but wake up that 114 get it breathing great n sounding the best I could without getting ride of the brand new bikes warranty, I'm going to ride the heck out of it for the next 2 yrs n then decide if I want a different cam , but most likely its staying this way, Its got all i need for how i ride n more n that sound note is perfect for me, what is amazing I see guys all the time on here putting a stage 2 after market cam and producing better dyno numbers that a 131 puts out at a much cheaper price, i'm really surprised so many guys pay for a 131 when they really just need a cam
Although I don't own an M8, Gixxer, I was once again am VERY impressed with the info about cam choice on the M8 and the manner with which you present it. I didn't know about the crappy idle🤔 Keep up the great work Sir!!!
Yes, I would love to hear about different cams for the M8 114. Keep up the great job your doing and stay the course!
Thanks for the video, great information. I haven't experienced the other cams but I know that the Redshift 468 "Zipper's Performance Cam took my Dads 107 to 107 Horse power and 117 foot pounds of tourqe. He's very pleased with it and it sounds good. Again thanks for the information I enjoy these types of videos.
My friends Street Glide in the clip has the Zippers 468, it made a huge difference! That bike with just the 468 cam, full Rinehart Exaust and air cleaner feels like a heavily modified twin cam.
I went with a Zippers RS 468 cam in my 2019 Road Glide 114". I like it because it produces good power in the RPM's ranges that I pretty much live in 2200 to 3500.
Wow great video. And my new favorite is now the S & S 465. I live in the 2500 to 3500 zone and that’s where this cam just blazes. Incredible numbers. Start at 100 pounds of torque at 2500 and 120 at 3500. Yeah that’s what I’m talking about.
I’ve ran the Screamin Eagle 462 (Power Cam) in my 107 and loved it!
I went with Zipper’s 468 and all I can say is WoW. I went from stock to 101-HP and 118-Torque. It runs and sounds amazing for a bolt on cam with air intake and exhaust upgrades.
The Zippers cam is highly recommended by my local dealer too! We put one in my friends Street Glide it was a whole new animal.
I did stage one on my 21 Street glide can you tell me more about your experience with the cam upgrade I'm thinking to get the same one
S&S Torque’y Cams are a must. It is noticeable difference. I have 114 Stage 1 with Cam and that’s it. Big difference
The Woods Cam, is the “stud”😀👍🍺
I’m wondering why he picked the 222 I think the 22XE is superior. Even the 22x
More on that Friday...
@@GixxerFoo
Awesome👍
I’ve got my 114 in the shop now getting the Wood WM822XE cam, Thundermax tuner, V & H Power Dual headers with CFR slip on’s & Arlen Ness inverted big sucker air cleaner!! Sounded like a sewing machine compared to my 103!!
That bike is going to rip when you get it back! That Wood cam is a monster, plus that ThunderMax is the way to go with a tuner! Yeah the new M8's just don't have the thump like the Twin Cams did, you won't have that issue with the new cam though!
I've been learning a lot from you. Keep it coming brother
Thank you!
Was going to go with either s/s 465 or 475, but ended up ordering Star 30/30 cam for my 107 Street bob, tech told me I should be able to get 115-117 hp and 128-130 torque. The dyno on it looks impressive.
Just did a 128 build w/ my 19' CVO SG. 155hp/148tq. Went w/ SS buckets, cam, CP Carrillo pistons. All of it ported/polished. Goes into a Jackport 2-into-1 exhaust and is way too loud, lol. She chops for sure...
Ive got the zippers Red Shift 468 in my Fat Bob 114. It's mated with a Thunder Max Tuner and A SP Concepts 2 into 1 big bore exhaust. I was shocked at the performance gains. Comes on low and just keeps going right on through to red line. Super happy with it !
That's an awesome setup! That Thunder Max makes a huge difference!
Love your videos, very informative. Would love to see the same specs for the 114.
Just mounted an S&S oil pump kit, Feuling lifters + cam-chain and crank sprocket, S&S adjustable pushrods and a Zippers 468 cam. I already had a Ness Big Sucker intake and a modified HD catless 2-1 exhaust pipe with a Firebrand Loose Canon muffler,…. absolutely an awesome “spiff up” kit for my 2017 water-cooled FLHTK. Now I am struggling with adjusting the Idle on my FP3 ….for some reason suddenly climbed up til 15-1600 rpms when “operative hot” and I want it to be at 910 - 920. I guess I know what to do tomorrow 😂
The screaming eagle torque cam does add a small lope. “Chop” sound. Take the cat out and it gets a little lower note to it.
That’s what I did 2 my ultra 2017..👍👍👍
still sounds like every other metric bike though
S&S for me. The power looks best for cruising
I have a M8 117 CVO with the S&S 475 and D&D exhaust 2 into 2 and is a beast with great sound
thats the cam im installing . would like to know if anyone has put the 11-1 pistons in a stock 117 with the 475 cam
Swapped for a Zipper's RS468 in my 107. Love it!
Just had a Zippers installed on my 107 and it’s awesome!! My Harley now has that true lope sound.
@@quomofo1 not being nosey but what does something like this typically run? Cam and labor
@@maddawg4599 Had Harley do the work and it was $1,100. I already had a stage 2 with the SE cam so I didn’t have to buy push rods or have a high flow air filter installed. It was just for the cam swap, labor, and power vision map. However, I just dropped my bike at the dealership again because the map was not very good. They are going to put it on the dyno so that will be another $400. It will be totally worth it. I thought I could just do a map to save $$ but I wanted to be as fine tuned as possible.
@@maddawg4599 when I did the stage 2 originally with all SE parts it was $2,600.
Mentioned prices are only for the cams. You're gonna need new lifters ($300~$400), adjustable pushrods ($200~$300), and a tune ($400~$800). If you're not doing the upgrade yourself, you'll also be paying for labor ($800~$1200). All in all it can run well over $2000 for a cam upgrade. That's in addition to the required Stage I upgrade (A/C breather and slip-ons). Still, a Stage II is the best bang for your buck. The gains are significantly higher than a Stage I, and the costs are significantly lower than a Stage III.
Totally agree. Not all Cams need adjustable pushroads (dependind on what engine: 107-114-117) but Tappets are important. Costs mentioned are just right. The final statement is 100% true: a well done Stage 2 (with Stage 1 including pipes and not just mufflers) is definitely Best Bang for the Buck even vs a Stage 3 with SE components.
Also don't forget the cost of a tuner on top of all that if you didn't add it at Stage 1.
I got the s&s 475 sounds badass has incredible torque i absolutely luv it!
It's amazing the just the difference in sound a cam swap on the M8 makes, not to mention the added power!
i went for the s&s 465 and real happy with it
I have the RE engineering 480 cam on my 107 and my power/Tq comes on earlier then all listed cam’s.
115hp 117Tq on 91
120hp 125tq on E85
I chose the RS 468. Will be installed in September. The exhaust system you chose makes a sizeable difference as well.
The M8 engine is far more particular about having the right pipes. Much more so than the TC. There are more pipes on the market that hurt the performance of the M8 than increase it. Especially when you remove the baffles and inserts.
Got a '21 RKS and started off with the SE447. Pretty nice impact for a rather mild TQ cam. Noticed the bike is not nearly so pliable under 2k RPM. Jump on it too soon and it will ping a little. But once I am up around 2.25k RPM it spins up fast and strong to 4k. I installed S&S lifters and cuffs along with the SE cam. But once the warranty is up I'll probably give the Zipper 468 a try.
The 468 Red Shift is an awesome cam, we put one in my friends 2018 Street Glide with a 107. It runs very strong throughout the RPM range now.
The BEST CAM is the one that SOUNDS THE BEST!
I was thinking you would share the sound with each..
That would have been very cool..
Great video regardless,
Thanks.
Thanks for the idea!
Fantastic episode brother.
Based on my experience with S&S, I will always choose them. Best overall performance, and they always consider both all-around #s, as well as longevity. In this case - won't trash your stock valvetrain, or at the worst, upgraded valve springs and maybe rockers.
A stock M8 still sounds so much better than any other brand out there!
They sure do, you can't replace that sound. The Indian sounds good but it's not a Harley lope.
I’d choose Woods FTW! Woods cam plus ported polished heads and two into one most bang for buck imho. Also fix the oiler issue on m8 while it’s cracked open.
Amen brother! I can really feel the difference with tourqe cam, ignition and pipes.
Harley's torque cam puts down about the same peak power on top as their power cam. Down low it destroys the power cam, they did a really good job on it!
@@GixxerFoo hence I ordered SE stage 2 torque cam :)
@@jjs8046 How're you liking it? I'm having mine put in today.
“114-17 version” 😂
Rivas Rocket cams sound WAY good! Opens exhaust valve early for extra lump and noise!
I'm going to have to check those out!
@@GixxerFoo some are getting 150 HP & 150 Tq out of the Rivas cams....
Yes need tons of info on the 114
I have that Knuckleheads Garage sign! 😄
Yes could you please show cams for the 114. I have a 20 road glide
i have the S&S cam with Cobra Speedster 909 pipes and Arlen Ness Monster Sucker intake - Maximus Tuner... it really is a very impressive cam
S&S makes an awesome cam, they wake those M8's up and give them some lope on that idle.
You left out feuling. Lol. Great information regardless. As usual 👍
And Cyclerama too!
That’s what I was looking for. I heard good things about fueling
Put a CR480 cam in my 17 107. Max HP 103.11 @ 5.39 RPM and Max TRQ 113.24 @ 3.85 RPM . lines cross at 5500 RPM, PWR & TRQ come on quick @ 2400 RPM, quiet valve train and nice lopey idle. Real happy with this cam, bike runs very smooth at any RPM above 2000 and gives great passing power at anything above 2500.
That's some strong work!
Man that Woods chart....what a beautiful powerband
Hell YA!! Thats not a torque curve, thats a TORQUE LINE!!! No need to shift to get into the powerband, just max out the right hand! Would like to see the 555 if they have one for the M8. I like mine in a 103.
@@johnchilds6471 They don't. You need two camshafts for a Twin Cam (2x 2 lobe), only one for an M8 (4 lobe). Cam profiles are different for an M8 as well.
@@bloodymarvelous4790 I know how many cams are in a Harley engine. But Woods has 222 cams and 777 cams listed but no 555's. Never messed with a m8, but it's hard to see what to run without the specs. Would have to go with Fuel Moto's advice.
Hi. Thanks for this info.I've been wanting the S&S kit. I have a 2019 RKC/107 with a basic stage one and a programmable tuner. Your video here focused on the S&S 465. Is the 465 a better option than the 475 or 550 ? Thanks again for the info. Ride Safe.
I think I like the S&S 465C, you better hang on with both hands.
I got the screaming eagle stage 2 kit.beautiful sound performance can .I also got a bigger sprocket.with an extra gear 7 speed baker transmission.kind of sluggish from the stop but I have it on the high side .nothing can keep up with me 100 mph.the rpm is only showing not even2,500.rpm.beautiful hwy bike.its a 107 2020.lowrider.with a splitter windshield to duck under it and go.
You've done some solid work on that bike! I haven't seen a M8 with a Baker in it yet!
Warranty is up. Been mulling a cam swap. Probly S&S 475c or RS472 this winter. Once I find a decent tuning shop I will probly go with what they reccomend.
Fuel Moto
Great information man. I just got a 2020 Heritage 114 with the Harley Torque cam installed and Bassani True Dual Exhaust. The pipes sound great. However, the Harley cam still doesn't give it that throaty lope. Ive had my eye on the Zippers Redshift but this gives me some more ideas. Keep em coming Gixer!
Just had the HD Dealership install the Zippers RS 468 with a PV tune and it’s insane! The sound is awesome and power is everywhere in my 107.
@@quomofo1 did you just have the stock cam in before?
@@twowheeledwireman282 I had the SE 462 torque cam with the SE street tuner. I was so disappointed in the performance gains. At idle it was no better than stock. It did pull a little harder but it always felt like there was more. The zippers RS 468 is on a completely different level. I’m very happy with the performance gains. My advice is to NOT waste your money on SE products unless you are concerned about the warranty.
I’m looking at the comp cam moonshine said it get 125hp and 127tq perfectly balanced for what I’m looking for.
Very informative! Thanks for sharing.
Anytime, I appreciate you watching!
I have a 114 and going with the wood cam, would love to see those numbers
Would like to see how a TTS cam would comparison would be to the others
I bought the Woods WM8- 22xe
That is one mean monster cam!
I've got the S&S 475 in my 107 and it made 106 hp and 115 tq. Not bad considering I have a pretty short pipe and less than ideal compression for the cam.
That's really good numbers with the 107 and your exhaust setup, there might be a lot more in there to be had!
Here's the set up, zippers 468,Rinehart slip ons and decat the headpipe can use fp3 or power vision,if you have rdrs 447 with street tuner
My friend's Street Glide is running the Zippers 468 with full Rinehart. He is using the Screamin Eagle Street Tuner which just kills me lol.
Can I use a bolt in cam on my 2021 Fatbob114 keeping standard exhaust and air cleaner?
2021 Street Glide I think I'm choosing the S&S
I have a 2021 Heritage 114 with a stage 1 upgrade and Rinehart slip on mufflers. I am satisfied with the performance, but do miss the old school "Potato Thumping" of my 2004 Heritage. Would a Stage 2 upgrade of the Cam provide that sound, or would more have to be done? If the Milwaukee 8 counter balancing had to be minimized, would it be detrimental to the engine?
What intake and exhaust combos were used for these numbers?
hi gixxerfoo. awesome videos im thinking about getting a 2023 fatboy114, then having a cam nstalled down the road. would you recommend getting a new oil pump and plate? or are the 2023's ,114 motors improved?? thanks, steve
M8s still have issues with the auto adjust on the primary? Like break your crank or rip out the bearings?
PLEASE do a cam video on the M8 117...great content!
Thank you! I appreciate the support! It's gonna interesting to get into one these new 117 engines and see what's up with the variable valve timing in the 121.
Great video. I was a bit surprised to not see the S&S 475 Cam considering the title of this useful video: Idle sound. Personally I find the S&S 475 the best sounding Cam at idle and not only.
I have the 475 on a 117 CVO with stage 1 and DND 2 into 1 exhaust it runs hard and the sound is awesome!
By far the best lope at idle, but my 22XE makes more torque. Both are great cams in the M8.
Great point! I covered it on the 114 video ua-cam.com/video/-7xrw--tY2c/v-deo.html

Whats ur recommendation for a 114 I'm leaning towards my old faithful s&s 475? Idk
What cams in that white glide in the beginning of the video? Sounds amazing !
Responding to questions about exhaust. No. I upgraded to a Full TAB performance exhaust header and mufflers with 2.5 inch baffles and 18MM wide band O2 sensors. In order to get the most out of my performance upgrades, I installed a Thundermax ECM with auto-tune. It’s like having an on-board dyno that tunes while I ride. Ride safe. Russ
ThunderMax is the way to, it's one awesome setup!
Another great video!

so what's needed for a stage two If I have already a stage one on my M8 114? I dont care about any gains... All I really care is the best loping sound. Thanks in advance
Moonshine harley is doing some insane motor work if your rich, you can have an amazing m8 motor...also, I thought everyone wants the sns 475 cam?....is that more of a top end cams than torque?
Great vid brother appreciate you.
I am very interested in what you have found for the m8 114
Would like to hear a m8 114 with a different cam , I got a 2019 road glide ultra with the m8 it's too quiet , and don't seem as fast as my 2013 road glide
I've been running RedShift cams for a long time with a couple of exceptions ! So that's my choice ! By the way if your swapping cams in a M8 I recommend using bolt cutters on the stock pushrods & installing S & S quick install pushrods even if it says you can run stock pushrods ! But I still have a hard time figuring out why anyone would want a M8 motor the only thing HD did right on it was going back to a single cam ! That's my take if you agree or not ! Get an older bike & drop in a 143 problem solved !
That doesn't solve the need for racing fuel. Drop in a 143, and you won't be riding it on the road, but you will be servicing it every 2000 miles, and replacing the engine after 30,000 miles.
@@bloodymarvelous4790 that's your opinion & that's fine with me ! I been building hotrod Harleys for a long time & I know exactly what Can be done & what can't ! S & S doesn't sell the 143 as a race motor it's a street motor !
I’m running a RS468 in my 2019 M8 114. Great torque cam.
My local dealer highly recommends that cam, for good reason too. They will install it under while you're under warranty and the dealer will cover the engine for the remainder of the warranty.
Do you still have stock pipes or slip ons

My latest video has those in the 114!
Would like to hear idle comparisons
You mentioned the Wood is noisier. I'm not very well versed in this stuff. How is it noisier?
T-man 216 puts them all to shame. I had the s&s 465 and it was good.
T-man are some insane cams! They aren't quite as well known with the general motorcycling population though.
You need to checkout the CR480 cam. That what I’m running in my 107 and made 111hp and 120ftlb
That's awesome power! I have it in this video on the 114 ua-cam.com/video/-7xrw--tY2c/v-deo.html
I have a Wood WM8-22XE in my Ultra Limited 114 I think it's better than any cams in this video IMHO.
What's a good Cam for a 2016 Road king
Hello. That's a nice bike. I have a question. My motorcycle is fltrx which was shipped in 22 years. I usually run from 1500 rpm to 3500 rpm. What kind of camera is right for me? 475? 465?
Does 475 have a severe fever? I want to change the camera and feel the vibration and sound more shaky than the pure sound and vibration. Like an old bike. Is the 475c cam effective after 2500 rpm? Does the 465c cam have a good effect from 1500 rpm?
Thank you for reading the question and please reply. Have a nice day.
Second James Ball !
I have torque cam, VH HDR, VH Slip ons no cam lope?
I went with the redshift 468
Zippers
Woods 22X-E is a better all around cam than the 222. Definitely like the idea behind the review.
Video will be dripping Friday, that XE cam is pure bolt in insanity.
@@GixxerFoo Your reply just cause me to subscribe. Looking forward to Friday's video. FYI, I went with the 22XE as well, and love it....check out the specs....very similar timing and duration to the Redshift 472, but with a little less lift. Lots of torque right where you want it! Great sound and lots of power with the right tune.
Can the idle be lowered with a cam kit such as the s&s 475 that includes a new oil pump? Or will the oil pressure get to low if the idle is lowered? I assume the new oil pump makes better pressure and thus the reason for including it?
Don't these High horsepower camshaft hammers a top-end to death in short order? Does everything outside of the camshaft have to be upgraded to handle the horsepower?
I had a 2000 Deuce that sounded like crap and nothing like a Harley at idle, I very soon sold it. The only reason I ride a V-twin is because of the sound.
Which one sounds the best?
I’d favor the andrews for what it offers 1600 to 2200 rpms. I want that super low end. That’s where I love to putt around.
How about same cams but In a gear compare it to chain cam. In a stock 107 again.
Do these require any other changes?...
But are these chain driven cams or are they gear-driven cam?
Woods the night prowler all the way no matter what Harley motor the only cam for me thanks Bob
With the d&d exhaust
Buy a $300 Fuelpak FP3, Lower the idle to 800 and do a tune. Not the same power as a cam, but a lot cheaper and you get that nice idle chop.
That does help out quite a bit, but you lose a lot of oil pressure idling a FI bike that low.
Andrews looks smart. Hard to say no to the woods tho
Andrews makes the cams for Woods to Woods specs.
01 88 evo run a 590 wood cam and s&s 10.2.1 pistons, e carb ..never had dino it will make 😉 .some say it to be big of cam! Big or not it still make u ear sing sweet betty.
The feel in the seat is all that matters in the end!
