Mild to Wild Bolt In Cams Take Your 114 M8 to the Next Level

  • Harley-Davidson 114 M8 is a serious candidate for bolt on horsepower and torque. The right bolt in cam will produce power levels exceeding Screamin' Eagle Stage kits while keeping the 114 displacement. Cams are always a great place to start and maybe even stop after you see these dyno numbers. With the right exhaust setup and tuning we're seeing power levels never before achieved with Harley engines using only direct bolt in cams.

    What's your preference? Camshafts that have decent power in all areas or targeting power in the low to mid or mid to high?

    • @rubinthomas1119
      @rubinthomas1119 2 роки тому +3

      I think decent torque through mid range. call me superficial but the way the motor sounds at idle and under throttle is important. If I was going to pick purely on how I want the bike to perform, I would go for a zippers472 but I love the sound off the WM 22XD. It is a difficult decision. Made harder with no real solid tuner solutions for 2021 bikes

      Power Vision should work for the 21's, that's the best tuner out there.

      I prefer to have the torque and power down slightly lower, the S&S 475c is a beast and provides pure power early on where most riders are averaging typical RPMs. Personally the S&S is my choice hands down.

      It would be hard to walk away from that 22XE, but hopefully coming in at 2100 rpm isn't two high an RPM to deal with for a daily rider?

    My 2021 Street Glide Special put down 121.14hp and 129.45tq. Screamin Eagle Ventilator Extreme intake, TBR 2 into 1 with turn out exhaust, and S&S 475c cam. Bike is tuned on Power Vision by Abel at Killer Creek Harley Davidson in Roswell, Ga. These M8 engines are incredible. Very little modification to really wake them up. The cam isn't what you'd find in a typical bagger, but I'm not your typical bagger rider. I like that top end power and the never ending pull in the upper rev range.

    About dyno sheets...
    Peak numbers are just that, peak numbers. They won't tell you how the bike performs across the rev range, for that you need to look at the torque curve. A flatter curve will give you more useable performance over a wider rev range. A lot of the shape of the curve is down to the cam, but a lot is also down to the exhaust system.
    Performance numbers will vary from bike to bike, even with identical setups. Performance numbers will also vary from tuner to tuner. Differences in elevation (air pressure), correction factors (STD vs SAE vs DIN), and dynos will produce different numbers even from the same bike. Don't get too hung up on small differences in numbers, they are likely down to variance.
    Where the curve starts is determined by at what RPM the tuner is starting the pull and where he cuts off the graph. Some will start the pull at 2000 RPM, some at 1500 RPM. That says nothing about where the power comes on. To determine where the power comes on, you need to look at where the torque curve climbs the fastest. The 22X-E curve is a good example (14:20), the tuner cut off the graph at 2100 RPM and yanked the throttle at 2200 RPM. Had he started the pull at 1500 RPM, the torque graph would have plateaued earlier.
    Horsepower will always continue to climb after the torque has peaked. hp = tq * rpm / 5252. As long as the rpms climb faster than the torque drops, your engine continues to produce power and the hp graph will continue to climb. Your engine stops producing power when the torque drops faster than the rpms climb which is after the hp graph has peaked. This is why the rev limiter is set to just after peak hp. There's no benefit going beyond that. Peak horsepower is your ideal upshift point for maximum performance.
    The torque and hp curve will always cross over at 5252 RPM: hp = tq * 5252 / 5252 ... hp = tq * 1 ... hp = tq. The relationship between torque and horsepower is linear. If your engine produces 10% more torque at x-rpm, it will also produce 10% more hp at that same rpm.
    To increase peak horsepower, the cam needs to provide more torque at peak horsepower rpm. Since torque is a curve, if a cam is designed to deliver more torque at higher rpm, that means it will deliver less torque at lower rpm. Most people ride at lower rpm (2000~4000 rpm) than at higher rpm (4000~6000 rpm). You should always pick a cam that performs best in the rev range where you ride.

    • @GixxerFoo
      @GixxerFoo  3 роки тому +2

      That's exactly why you got to pay attention to what's going on with the graph and not focus on those peak numbers. Excellent point!

    Hi GixxerFoo ! I recently found your channel. Love the videos and information you provide and this in particular was a great comparison video. I have a question regarding cam upgrades... They always do these comparisons to a stock setup versus cam + pipes + air intake updates. I know it probably doesn't get the most out of any cam upgrade, but was wondering... What would the numbers look like if you only put in a cam and did a tune? Are they very marginal or half-way decent? Personally, I find the stock setup pretty good so aren't really looking for monster upgrades. I generally like the quieter sound from the stock setup (of my 2021 Road King Special) but wouldn't mind getting some lope put into the M8. And who doesn't like a bit more power. So I was thinking... I'd like to keep the overall pipe noise down, gain some lope, and don't need all the power gains... what if I just add the cam + tune to a completely stock setup?
    Keep up the great work!

  • @vernlochtefeld1626
    @vernlochtefeld1626 2 роки тому +3

    I think somewhere you should have noted that these dynos were done by the Mfrs with various air cleaners intakes exhaust systems tuners & dynos. So these comparisons are only moderately apples to apples.
    The setup specifics need to be sought out & considered for use in decision making with regards to a consumers bike.
    Also aftermarket cams & tuners on a new bike voids warranty. It is something to be considered. I likely will upgrade to aftermarket parts eventually so I am actually pro aftermarket. But for now the SE breather, SE tuner, SE-498 cam, etc allowed my 114 to make 116 HP 116 TQ which is performance competitive here AND retained full factory warranty.
    Plus since it was bought within 60 days of bike purchase it got MoCo’s 20 percent off discount making it price competitive as well.
    We pay for that warranty as part of a new bike purchase. I see no sense in letting MoCo off the hook unless there is no better way to get what I want.

    • @GixxerFoo
      @GixxerFoo  2 роки тому

      Those are some really solid numbers with the SE cams! For the most part exhaust systems and air cleaners are pretty comparable. When you get down to trying to get absolute peak dyno numbers an exhaust swap can make a difference plus or minus in the horsepower. Any aftermarket cam choice is going to make a huge difference in the feel of bike, no doubt though under warranty stick to the SE parts or wait till the warranty is up.

      @@GixxerFoo Ran across this again so I thought I would give you an update. Bike now has 37k zero issues. I've only made one mechanical mod. I removed the Db reducer. Its a pretty universal design 3 hole flange in a 4" pipe with a pipe diameter of 1.75". Fuel moto has them except 2" ID all you do is cut it to the same internal length as your stock Db reducer and bolt it in. Shortly after I won a free dyno pull. What do you know it picked up 2 HP & 6 TQ. 118 HP 122 TQ. Could be good air a happy dyno whatever but I suspect it was the Db reducer. On top of that it sounds better at idle and under load. Not a lot louder but enough to easily hear the difference. Cheap easy mod for anyone can do.

    I'm not sure if you realize it or not but it's not so much the difference in displacement on the 114 but the fact that it's a longer stroke which should produce more torque

    I think I just watched this video for the 50th time. Great video. I am in the process of picking out a cam for my 2020 Ultra Limited to do over the winter which will be the Zippers or S&S. My confusion is what to do about the head pipe, should I go with the Khrome Werks 2-2 and get rid of the cat or no?
    The second question is should we do the S&S oil pump and cam plate as long as it's open?

    • @GixxerFoo
      @GixxerFoo  2 роки тому +2

      For sure I would get the head pipe and get rid of the cat, you'll really appreciate the performance gain with the new cam and not to mention the heat reduction. For sure if you can swing the extra cash the oil pump and cam plate is a excellent option, while you're in there for the cam is the time to do it. Check your run out on the pinion though, for the S&S race plate you'll want to be below .005 run out. Another great option to pair with is the Feuling OE cam plate, it has higher run out tolerances and you can use the Feuling high volume oil pump. Here's a video about the sumping and how the high volume oil pumps and cam plates will help tremendously with that ua-cam.com/video/uoDPqUj8Ajw/v-deo.html.

    Hey my friend, I was hoping you could answer a few question for me!? Well, it's more about your opinion and my best option to get the best performance out of my new 2023 Harley Davidson Fatboy 114 (vivid black). LOL 😂
    You don't know me (duh!), but I really like watching your videos, as they're very informative, technical, and opinionated.
    But first just a bit about myself, so you can get a feeling about what I need (Stage 1, Stage 2, etc.,).
    My name is Cpt. Michael R. Metzler Sr. and I am a former Marine (7 yrs.) and now a U.S. Army Aviation Maintenance Officer 🚁 Helicopter Test Pilot (retired veteran).
    I owned a 1991 HD Low Rider Custom back in 1997, but the bike was a bit to small for me. I had to sell it when I left in January 2003 for Melgar (Tolemeida), Colombia to work as a Test Pilot for the Drug Interdiction Program with the Department of State and Colombian Army.
    Well, now I have my new bike and I am a about to buy a set of Vance and Hines Big Radius exhaust and a chrome Trask "Assault" air filter system (stage 1). I will also buy a new tuner, but I would like to know which tuner you think would be the best.
    The next question is about the bolt on cam. Which of the ones you referred to do you think would be the best for me, as I want that true Harley sound that my bike does NOT have being stock.
    That's one reason I want the V&H Big Radius. But more than that, I want the performance and the rumble that comes along with it.
    I now live in the Philippines with my Filipino wife and three gorgeous children (2 Filipino-Americans and 1 Filipino step-daughter) and we don't have the wonderful highways that we have back home 🏡 (New Orleans (East), Louisiana).
    I mention that because my trips aren't very long, unless I head out for a ride with some friends (1-2 hours) or go to Manila for a servicing of bike, which is about a 7-8 hour ride from my home in San IlDefonso, Ilocos Sur. But that's only a two lane highway and all of the others around are one lane! LOL 😂 Definitely miss home in terms of riding! 😊
    Please give me a shout when you get a chance to read my very lengthy comment. LOL 😂
    Thank you very much and please keep the videos coming. 😎
    God bless you and the family! 🙏❤😊🚁
    Sincerely,
    Cpt. Michael R Metzler Sr. 😊

      Thank you for your service sir and congratulations on your beautiful family and motorcycle! With the things going on with EPA legal tunes, I would recommend trying to get you a Power Vision through FuelMoto. I say that because you can get the cam from them with an excellent map already loaded on the tuner that's in house developed by them for your bike. They make some killer maps!
      For your 114 M8 the best cam hands down is gonna be the Wood WM8 22XE. That cam make power the stage 4 Screamin Eagle kit for the 114 puts down. FuelMoto is hard to beat, just make sure you get the older PowerVision and not the PV4. The PV4 has EPA legal tunes, the older one FuelMoto will load up with the exact map you need for your bike's setup.

      @@GixxerFoo while I miss the traditional Harley "lope," I love that anyone who knows motors and Harleys can tell that my bike is cammed. The only downside i have is the mileage I get when I decide to flog her a bit. My bike has a 3.3 gallon tank. If I'm going down the highway at 80mph I can normally get about 150 miles of range. If I'm riding around town with friends and flogging her a bit, I'll run through a tank in a day. The Wood cam makes her thirsty as hell when you open her up. The trade-off is that with close to 130ft/lbs of torque and close to 120hp depending on the air temp, I'm too busy hanging on to worry about fuel costs. The adrenaline rush and smile i get are worth every penny.

    Hey what are your thoughts on the thunder torque inserts? It seems that these things add back some low end torque after putting open in free-flowing exhaust on bikes. No I mean if you’re not going to do a two into one, the idea of these getting some back pressure (or stopping reversion) back into your system makes sense.

    • @GixxerFoo
      @GixxerFoo  2 роки тому +2

      Mainly those are used with short drag pipes and in that case I would use them for that situation. But if you've got a full exhaust system just using the standard baffle will work great there.

    I wish I could talk to you because I have questions;
    1. Are these graphs provided by the manufacturer? Because comparisons are out the window because there are too many variables.
    2. Like 99.83% of us watching, we're not racing anyone and never go above 3,000 rpm! So, most of these cams are of little value.
    3. Not a word from you on perhaps the most import aspect for most of us; SOUND!!! I have plenty of engine on my M8 114 with full exhaust & tune. I want "sound". So, which one sounds the best? That's what I want to know. I've only heard one cam in an M8 which was the HD Screamin' Eagle, and it sounded like stock.
    4. The S&S 475 you selected to compare is very popular, but not the highest on torque. That would be the 465. Why didn't you compare that one?
    So, with all your information provided, you didn't help me decide which cam to buy. My price estimate for a "bolt on" cam is about $3,000.00!. These numbers of $220.00 for a cam are dishonest.
