Pay to Play Harley Motorcycle Features are a Dangerous Precedent (You Already Own Them!)
Вставка
- Опубліковано 28 чер 2024
- Pay to play on your Harley motorcycle for something you already own? That very well could be coming in the future and the automotive industry is already doing it! You just bought a new Harley motorcycle decked out with all the features imaginable from a stereo, GPS, heated grips and even a heated and cooled seat. But to use those features you have to pay to activate it or pay monthly to continue to use it. You might even buy a Harley motorcycle accessory but can't use the electronic feature without a subscription! Sounds crazy and it is, truth is auto manufacturers are already requiring subscriptions to use features you bought with the car! We do not want this coming to our Harley motorcycles!

Would you pay to activate a feature or pay monthly to use a feature on a motorcycle?
"You will own nothing and be happy". I'm too old and cranky to be scammed by some creature comfort gizmo that's going to leech money from me.
We already buy cars for the government but claim it as ours even though local governments tell you when, where, and how you'll use that vehicle and they can prevent you from using it on the roads you help pay for.
I'm glad I'm in my end days because the world is going to hell due to greed and communism.
Nahh, there is nothing i want or need that much.
I would never own something that required a subscription for me to use it the way I intend to use it.
I would not buy a bike with features that would drain my funds after the purchase. Thus, why have features?
NO
I ride a motorcycle. I have no use for all that crap. All I really need is a good seat.
Don't get me started on seats, I will pay some big bucks for the right seat!
Good seat and two good tires.
@@GixxerFoo You can get exactly what you want by bringing a good seat pan with or without the cover and foam to any (good) local auto upholsterer who can foam with any density you like and install gel packs if you prefer. You can also crudely or not so crudely cut your own foam and use the old upholstery for testing and mockup then get what you want. I quit buying new seats long ago since so many used ones are out there for hundreds less then their original owner spent on them.
I like the gps BUT MY PHONE DOS 5HAT TOO
I'll stick to my old Shovelhead. All play no pay!
That's the way to do it! A lot less electronic hassle and dealer bs to deal with.
Me too my Panhead my flat head and my iron head.
Me too. 💯
You still pay but not for fu@kery
Sounds like KTM, kinda
Im quite certain all the new tech is appealing to many riders. Im 57 and other than a tach and speedo I could care less. Listening to the radio or music is a super rarity for me. Typically the exhaust and my own thoughts are where I like to be.
The tech is all neat and fun for a while but I honestly prefer an analog tach and speedo, just listen to the exhaust and hum of the engine.
Me too.
The exhaust is music to my ears!
I’m 57 too brother, live to ride not live to scroll.
Entertainment is DISTRACTION. If you don't like riding more than radio, why ride at all when cars pack much better tunes?
Making my old evo more appealing all the time.
Basic tool set is all you need to work on those!
I ride a 2000 honda shadow ace and been looking at a used harley. I think I'm gonna go with a older twin cam. Or a later evo. The m8 bikes are to expensive and honestly don't come close to the beautiful sound of a evo or twin cam. Where im from evos are hard to find at a decent price. They don't want to let them go for cheap and I don't blame them
Me to 93 evo f.x.r would not part with it. 🤪

@@GixxerFoo Bike is a 98 Fhlp, I recently added a used Ebay find king pack from an '02 and I feel like I did a major upgrade, Ha!
I would never own a vehicle two or four wheels that would require a subscription, but then again I never thought I would be paying for television just so I could watch old Gillian’s Island reruns.
It better be some really good features and worth the money. Still not right if you already own it though.
Where you watching these
I remember when there was a waiting list and they sold 200,000 bikes a year. Now they’re lucky to sell 100,000. They all had waiting list at most dealerships and now dealership floors are loaded with new bikes. They are a clothing company that sells motorcycles. I’ve been riding Harley Davidson‘s since the mid-80s. And the fact that all the service departments push their oil, their mufflers, and everything else Harley Davidson saying you’re going to void your warranty is pushing more and more people away from their motorcycles. Us die hard Harley riders have been keeping them afloat for the past 40 years are getting tired of it.
The new CEO has them focused on making more money off the bikes. So selling less units but the revenues are up. That's gonna hurt in the long run. I sure miss those days when they couldn't keep them on the floor.
Uh correction dude go into a Ducati dealer like I did same exact thing as Harley. $67.00 for a YEE SHIRT TO BOOT
@@johnliotta2583 Well if that Ducati dealer also sells HD junk, then that's expected.
I remember paying $4995 For my brand new 19791/2 Lowrider,1/2 year was the introduction of the 80 c.i.1340,Silver/Black,red pinstriping, that was a big day.
Dudes aren't even really buying Harleys anymore, basically buying a nice sofa with a V-Twin and a big old laptop, not hating on baggers/touring but I always prefer the strip down approach on a motorcycle, my GPS is in my phone if I need it. I think we are going to bizarre direction with too much tech
Literally our phones can do everything we want without having to pay 30K. Boggles my mind the cruiser has pretty much died and everyone rides touring bikes as bar hoppers.
LOL this is so true! Quad Lock mount and I have more and also far superior tech on my bike than any of these shitty bike electronice. And to replace my phone, I don't need to go to a garage. Don't make shit complex, keep stuff separate and isolate it, that has always been the way. Replace your phone without disrupting your riding experience! Have all the features you need and only when you really want them. Keep the bikes simple!
I use an old school flip phone, with no internet, no operating system, and NO touchscreen. I keep it put away while riding and driving. I do have an older Garmin GPS that sits on the dash that I sometimes use in my cars, but it is not registered to me, so even if it can be tracked, I can't be. The battery can be removed from my phone. I carry a Garmin Etrex on motorcycles, the only reason I have it is so if I have a breakdown, and have to call road service, I can give them my location.
Three-LeggedCat,That's what I'm talking about.It's a motorcycle,not an entertainment center.
I got my phone in my Quad Lock and I have a JBL Bluetooth speaker that wedges behind my fairing.
Old schooler here if you start out needing navigation and a stereo, then you don't enjoy the the real freedom of the ride besides it's not the destination it's the journey and the therapy of it
That's the whole point of a bike is to get away from all that and clear your mind. I am sure that stuff is nice on a multi state trip but you miss so much in a car so why incorporate that into a bike.
100% right Deborah,Iain't lost,just wandering.
Let's get back to good ol' fashioned biking . 🏍 no frilly rubby crap , back to why we ride .
It really doesn't seem like it's just about riding anymore these days!
More and more reasons why I hear long time Harley owners REFUSING to buy a new Harley,, and yet corporate can’t seem to figure out why everything is DOWN 🤔
Harley has taken a new approach, in building and shipping less. Lowering production costs, splitting the difference in price and making more on every single bike sold. So while sheer number of units is down the profits and revenue are up.
@@GixxerFoo When us boomers die off, so does Harley. Young folks are riding sport bikes, there are riding groups for the Grom. These guys are not future HD owners. If Biden does not pay off student loans these guys will be lucky to afford a Chinese scooter.
I think you're spot on. My wife already thinks Harley is crap. She says why buy a new expensive bike and have to spend thousands to make them right?
That's the sad part is there are things you'll want to do to the bike even after you buy it or end up building a new motor later.
I always admire a man who starts a conversation with the words "my wife already thinks"
@@LJS01 I like when a wife says go get that bike,it's what you want,be safe go have fun with the boys,I'm going shopping with the girls see you when you get home. That what I admire.
I’ll keep my eyes peeled for more 02’ and earlier carbureted bikes for myself.
Those carbed bikes look better and better every year they roll out these newer ones.
I’m sticking with carbs too. 2002 Heritage. No gizmos.

Older is better in today's market anyhow!

Some states are already suing this subscription pay to use features. They tried to compare it to XM radio but it didn’t work with those states. They clearly stated that XM has to load content and keep employees to support it. In your car you own the car, the seat and the motor that gives you the massage, no input from the manufacturer is required. I think other states will follow suit.
They want to make it to where you have to buy the heated seats that are already installed in your vehicle. Literally pay to make them work after you paid for them in the price of the car. It's scary how no one wants us to own anything anymore.
I bought my last harley in 2018. Harley before that i rode for 30 years. I just turned 70 and don't think another is in the books. No fancy shit on my Heritage. If i want music I hum show tunes.
Nothing wrong with that at all! Heritage is an excellent bike, l love the new softail version. It will do anything a tourer will and doesn't weigh a ton.
@@GixxerFoo Brakes and suspension are just OK, besides that I am very happy with my Heritage Softail. M8 engine is fine. Sound system plays that Harley rumble and of course what ever I hum!
bought my last harley in 05. will never sell it or trade it for newer.
I found myself recollecting all the words to ''The Battle Hymn of the Republic'' on my last ride to the stealership. It's amazing what our minds can do in meditation while riding.
Same here reached the 60's and don't think of selling my 2004 SEEG, thinking of buying an EVO for the sub 500km rides
I don't know how the younger people feel, but as an old guy, I wouldn't buy a new Harley or a new car because of all the BS. You can always upgrade the audio system on older bikes. Have the same features without the fees.
Exaclty!! Plus it's not all tied into one central system which make you go to the dealer for everything!
@@GixxerFoo The aftermarket will catch up. They make all kinds of interfaces and bypass gizmos for the newer cars.
Learned this lesson the hard way. Bought a newer truck thinking all the new tech was cool, now realizing it's just a bunch of plastic junk with flaws. Like automatic wipers that would go full speed when it's a drizzle so turned them off and parking censors set to lowest setting cause they ding everytime I pull up to a stop sign or the auto brights that turn themselves off everytime I turn a corner where deer might pop out of the bushes, plus they are made so cheap that I've put more money into this truck that I still cost as much as my house did to keep it going down the road than I did to keep my 94chevy with 400k miles going. 100k miles on a truck and it starts to fall apart. I'm not I.T. or a computer tech at all but that's what I envision when I picture a bypass system.

@@GixxerFoo right?? I'm considering gathering as many as I can and sitting on them until they gain popularity and value... I did that with square body chevys, gathered a couple dozen when they were 800$ all day long. In the last couple years I have sold a couple at a serious profit.
In the last 6 months I've picked up 3 twin cams that were wrecked lightly so that I can refurbish.... the whole deal you went through about the after market getting screwed, that's gonna make things a bit difficult, but like I said before, this exhaust issue will only help keeping the back pressure.
I’m with ya on that. I just bought a beauty 2013 FXDBP Hard Candy Custom with the twin cam 103 with 1,259 miles on it. Runs like a dream. Well, it's not my worry, because I won't own anything after an Evolution, but in my many years of wrenching, I've done quite a few things people said couldn't be done.
Totally agree with your sentiments.
.
However depending on how HD will incorporate this technology into newer bikes.
..
My guess is everything electronic will be "hardwired"
(built into)The ECU.
..
So let's say everything is stripped of the bike back to basics.
..
The ECU will
"know this" through a lack of sensor data/signals. And thus throw an error/or limp mode code.
..
The other part is the internet modem to receive the data packets.
..
Again if the modem is hardwired then it will be difficult to separate the modem from the ECU.
No internet no working ECU..
..
Even if you revert back to carbs.
The EPA will bring in some BS anti- modify law that would render a new bike illegal if it's tampered with..
..
This also doesn't consider the fact HD would likely ghost you in warranty & maintenance programmes on a newer bike..
..
I totally agree this subscription model is BS.
..
Just vote with your wallet..
My bud has a Porche, when he picked it up after a service while driving on the way home he tried to select a driving mode which seemed to have stopped working. He went straight back to the dealership to report this only to be told he hadn't paid for this option when the car was new and it shouldn't have been there in the first place. It took them 2 years to notice this...shame on you Porche.
As far as Harley-Davidson goes I'll stick with my 95 Evo Heritage Softail and my 77 Ironhead Sportster, both of which I bought new. Not keen on Harley's recent engines. Another good video from you sir. 🇮🇲
That's really shitty they did that to him! That's a bunch of crap they took it off after two years noticing it hadn't been paid!
Some sad times we're living in unfortunately
It really is a sad state of affairs out there!
Open the pod bay door HAL. I'm afraid l can't do that Dave.
Lol I ain't paying for a new bike with all that stuff either.
Sounds par for the course for Harley Davidson. I went and bought an oil filter wrench last week. The parts guy located it along with the filter and charged me a premium for it. I get home, go to change the oil and the cap I bought doesn't fit the filter. I complain via our local messenger board. I receive a response from the dealership that I should return to the dealership, ask for a particular person and that person would investigate so to assess fault. I'm sorry what? My reply was that it would cost me more in gas and time wasted to get to them and return home then what I paid for the items. (My closest Harley dealer was shut down by corporate Harley a few years back for whatever reason a few years back). Nothing heard from them. I found the correct oil filter wrench online for half the Harley price, it shipped and was there the next day and I finally changed my oil. I say so much for supporting your local dealership and I'm not surprised as to a sneaky tactic as this trying to be implemented by corporate Harley.
I'll will say this and it hurts my heat the privately owned dealers are dying. Harley wants large corporate owned dealers. My local dealer is shutting down after 50 years of private ownership in June. The owner passed away and the things going on with Harley they just can't continue to keep operating. Sad cause it was a dealer, but it was run like an old school bike shop.
This is why I love my 2004 Dyna Low rider (carburetor of course) :)
It's nice to not need a 500 dollar tool to make a tuning adjustment!
Nine thousand fancy new features behind a subscription service paywall, but you darn well know the oil leak still comes standard.
Lol shockingly they don't leak like they used to so quality has improved in some respects.
Hey guys isn't it all about freedom that's what motorcycles are about especially Harleys.

Beautiful country over your way! Best thing anyone can do is not be a payment slave and then get caught up paying for features and tech!
So true brother buying the right to tune it I just about fell over bloody rip off brought my own tuner.
Never going to buy another brand new hog clipping the ticket after paying for it.
Going to head over your way couple of years explore your awesome county
I have heard of other manufacturers locking certain features/tunes out of the ECU, and you having to pay extra above the purchase price to unlock extra power, etc. It's awful and IMO unethical.
It is unethical to me as well, if it's something you buy and install l get that. But being present on the bike and paying for it in the price and then having to pay to use it wrong.
HD Motorcycles, once simple and reliable and easy to maintain and repair, now ruined by a non-riding board of directors trying desperately to remake the Gold Wing.
I am curious how many of upper management at Harley actually ride!
@@GixxerFoo You and I and most of your readers have spent more time in the saddle stopped at a red light, than they have going down the road. In my opinion.

I think after paying thousands of dollars for the bike . This just a cash grab and makes me i own an older harley davidson.
Things like this just make me appreciate the older motorcycles even more!
Im 72 yo and I see the day coming when starting my 54 Pan might be a little much for me, so I just picked up a 99 Fatboy Evo. Are you kidding me - pushing a button to start a scooter? I feel like Im cheating. Who could ask for more than that? I will ride the Pan as long as my right leg holds out but looking forward to becoming spoiled.
That 99 is world away from the Pan, that's gonna be like riding a space ship with how easy everything is to operate on there!
If the right leg gets a little tired, get a sidecar,no 3 wheelers a sidecar, and you can ride forever. Google "100 year old man riding his motorcycle w/sidecar"
There are hundreds of thousands of older vintage (2023 and earlier) Harley Davidson motorcycles in circulation. Most of these have been well maintained and cared for. The aftermarket is awash in parts and support for those machines. I don't think you can say the same for most other brands of bikes. My 2003 Road King runs like a champ, has aftermarket suspension, seat, new lighting and other updates. Most anything (subscription based) I need comes directly off my phone - maps, music, directions, weather- even my mph. All you need is a phone mount and a Sena/Cardo or smart helmet. The Motor Company should concentrate it's energy and resources on making better bikes and leaving subscription revenue on the side of the road. The only subscription that's worth anything to me is HOG Membership (primarily if I ever needed roadside assistance - which I have never needed to date).
That's awesome to have a bike done up exactly the way you want it! You cant get squat for any other motorcycle like you can a Harley! That's what make a Harley worth the investment!
I'll stick with my 15 sg
Hackers will just become prevalent
That's how it's gonna have to be in the future!
I refuse to own a bike like that.
Subscription features are a natural for the Ferrari-obsessed current H-D management. 😂
I seriously do question how many and how often does Harley's upper management actually ride a damn bike!
Have had a lot of upgrades done to my 2005 Fatboy. Have spent over $10k doing it. Most of my parts are aftermarket, put on by a shop that listens to what I want to do, how I want to do it, with the Best parts for the job. My general rule is Harley will tell me I can't do it, it will cost 2 to 3 times more than my preferred way, to get half of the quality and results. They prefer their business model over getting my >$10k - what a business model that is.
Their business model is more out for the investors and not the rider! Harley's stuff cost 10x as much as aftermarket parts anyhow.
a money pit.
"Imagine having a new motorcycle with Heated grips, heated/cooled seat, stereo, navigation" What a nightmare.
I imagine an aftermarket stereo already exists for a harley. Those guys are just going to make more money from this. I was able to activate the factory cruise control with a $20 cable and a laptop, similar things will show up because part of the appeal is tinkering with it.
You know good and well these companies already have a 2024 and they are reverse engineering the crap out of it.
I’m old and can’t justify owning that level of Big Brother oversight. So I’ll just take good care of my old softail. 👍
Especially when it's connected to the internet makes me wonder what data they are gathering!
@@GixxerFoo you know it!!
Yes mate me to. Keep my 93 f.x.r evo love ❤️ that bike. 😜
I've already run into a form of this having HD cruise control installed on my Softail Standard. While it's not a subscription, but in order to have the activated cruise control light show up on the digital instrument panel, the dealership had to call in to HD corporate with the bike connected to the internet just to turn the indicator light on the dash. The dealership wasn't even aware that this was needed, at first they were telling me that there was no light on the instrument panel.
That drives me insane about that! You bought it and paid for it, even installed it yourself to bypass the dealer. Still have to go to the dealer and pay them to activate it.
@@GixxerFoo Right? Although, cruise control was working, it was just the indicator light that wasn't functioning. So, you couldn't visually tell when it was on or off.
They dropped the price on the touring bikes so if you had to pay a “one time fee for the Nav its one thing but If HD thinks I’m going to pay for a subscription for heated grips they can go F themselves.
That was the new CEO's plan, ship less bikes and reduce inventory sitting out there but make more money on every motorcycle they sell.
I purchased a 2015 street glide special with navigation and use it for long rides where I do not know the area. One time I was riding out of state and it was telling to to exit on a road that was no longer there. Come to find out later that you you have to pay to purchase upgraded maps on your Harley navigation it is not current. I used google maps on my phone that is handlebar mounted to get where I needed to go out of state. You would figure that you paid for the the navigation system when you purchased the bike and it would auto update but it does not. Maybe on the newer bikes with the new screen you have an option to use google maps but not on my bike. If you want current maps you have to pay or use google maps through your phone.
@@DevilDog59 I ended up buying a $20 jumper for mine so l can use wireless CarPlay. I never even thought about having to update it before you mentioned it.
If you buy a new harley and get the service dept to install new pipes , bars , seat , motor work etc, etc , do you walk out the door with all those take off parts ?
You have the option to take your old parts, otherwise they put them in a metal bin and make some more money off recycling the metal.
We're seeing it in the trucking industry already with telematics and the wife's new Acura has a subscription service to use the auto start and other features. No doubt we'll see it in bikes soon enough and the doctors and lawyers that can afford these new bikes will gladly pay for it. If they're dumb enough to do it then so be it. I'll stick to low tech bikes
I currently own 3 Harleys (2 are softail CVOs and the other is a carbureted Dyna) and I have zero need for screens and gadgets requiring cell service or internet access. There are thousands of low-mileage used HDs for sale at any given time. I will stick with the old stuff. I haven’t set foot in a Harley dealership in a loooong time but I hear from buddies that they are all packed to the gills with new bikes. The new world: $37,0000 motorcycles, $70,000 pick-up trucks, and $20,0000 snowmobiles. But hey!… we have financing for you!!!
That's the game, they will rent I mean finance you a bike, bury you and buy it back all while shoveling cash into the money bin from interest.
It’s already happening. I noticed this in 2017 when they came out with cornering ABS for my 2016 BMW R1200R. The equipment was already on my bike, required nothing but a software update. They wanted $400 for the upgrade. I’m sure Harley Davidson on many features is already there.
400 buck for 5 minutes worth of work and you can bet your bottom dollar you paid for those features in the purchase price of the bike.
This would be a deal breaker for me. My dream would be that they attempt selling a nice FLTRX without the computer… you know a carb, an engine and a seat.
I never imagined a day where it would be hard to buy just a basic motorcycle from Harley. Even the Sporsters have digital connected displays now. Softail is about the only new bike you can get without a bunch of electronics.
This is the one thing about indian that pisses me off, they've already begun. There are ride command features that deactivate after a year that you can pay a sub for.
That's wild! That ride command is a huge part of the features of the bike too!!
My KTM came the same way. It was extra to use the quickshifter that was already on the bike. The dealership “unlocked” it for free after proving they didn’t prep the bike after paying $350. That bike is badass btw, a Duke 890R.
It's one thing to have the parts available for purchase and installation, but in my mind it's just wrong to purchase a bike with it installed already and you have to pay extra to use it. You already own it when you bought the bike!
Seriously got me thinking Mikuni for my 2003 FLHTCUI.
You got a delphi on that if you have FI, you can still get parts should you ever need them but for sure compare the rpice to a carb conversion!
Already left most of the manufacturers today. I have a new old tech bike. 2022 with carb no efi, motor and exhaust for my music, no radio or fancy things, dash is digital but not even a fuel gauge; just trip meter to reset on fill up and remind me its getting near time to think about visiting a fuel station. No subscriptions or other bs, I’m also not buying new cars because of it. Waiting for it to pull back. Tesla already unable to sell cars like they used to, stock dropping, etc. Not interested in modern cars that got rid of all controls for digital computerized ones to break, require software updates, subscriptions and then hacked or broken into by nation state actors. Screw that and have to pay for that too! 😂
Did you mean 2002- not 2022?
Here's a scary thought.
..
On the newer Tesla's and Range Rovers.
They have electronic retractable flush fitting door handles.
..
What's saying that,
As newer cars are connected to the interwebs.
..
A manufacturer could send a signal/update to a car which "locks out*
the owner from even entering the car?
My '92 Electra Glide looks new, feels new, and I can do all work and maintenance. The Evo has been reworked for 85-90 horsepower.Bike has been all over the country and reliable. My '22 Lowrider S doesn't have any added fluffy stuff. It has had some horsepower added and it's a blast. I've got long haul and short haul trips covered and both bikes are paid for. I like reliable mechanical advancements. Never did care for fluff. When I need fluff I get it my truck.👋💀
You got about the best setup anyone needs in a Harley with your Evo making 85-90 horse, that's just the perfect setup. Don't get me wrong the LowRider S is gotta be nice to blast around town on!
@@GixxerFoo I stumbled on Dave Mackie Engineering. His head and piston work is phenomenal.👋💀
It's cute that Harley considers themselves a 'premium' brand.
They for sure aren't what they used to be!
I'm the kind of guy that when I have a motorcycle I have to make it my own. paying subscription every month would not be for me
It's not worth paying monthly for features but if they are on the bike from the factory you should own them and be able to use them!
Hahahahahahahahahaha
My Flathead & my Evos are Cyberdyne proof. The stero(my front & rear exhaust) are not connected to any electronics
Cyberdyne proof lmao, that they are! No way to be tracked unless you got a cell phone on you!

I think I will keep my 2015 SG.
Best years of the tourers were from 2014 to 2016 with that 103!
I have a stroker 95" that will keep rt up with anything believe that
@@GixxerFoo It has 48k on it and has been great.
I've got $1000 in a stereo system with 8 speakers on my 98 FLHTCUI Evo,and I could care less weather it's on at all, listening to the motor rumble is good enough for me! As for navigation as long as there is fuel in the tank I will find my way around!Greetings from Tampa Florida 😎
Aftermarket is the way to go! Those older models fixed up like that are the way to go!
My next ride will be a "homemade custom"...because I don't play well with cronies
Nothing wrong with that at all! Build it into exactly what you want with a motor that you know exactly what's in it and it's done right!
Give the aftermarket sometime they'll create the gizmos to bypass HD and Indian
The OEM's really don't like the aftermarket, they want you in dealer service departments for everything.
@@GixxerFoo last time I walked in the dealer was years ago looking for Evo parts for a friend of mine
Cutting pliers, solder, and heat shrink wrap.
I’ll stick with my 95 evo road king
There is nothing wrong at all with an Evo powered machine!
All the Auto OEMs are going this direction. Don't pay the fee, no heated seats, remote start, or whatever they decide.
That's what I am saying! It was all nice features and then they figured out how to charge you over and over for them.
KTM already does that. For track mode and heated grips. You get a demo mode with everything unlocked when you buy the bike. Then you have ti pay a fee to unlock everything when the 3 month demo is over.
That's what KTM owners have been upset about, they literally lock up the power you bought the bike for. That's a whole new level of crap, Harley kinda does that unless you visit the parts counter for another 5k.
Not the heated grips, but they do it on the electronics package, that includes track and quickshifter. It’s “unlocked “ for 932 miles (1500km) then locks. The dealership “unlocked” my bike at 600 miles since they messed up charging me $350 for a prep service never performed.
Ride a old bike. The heck with new bikes. Learn how to use tools your self. Stay cool.
Once you get that bill from the proprietary tools they use at the Harley dealer it makes those old bikes a lot more attractive!
Good info, thanks. The independent is all I’ve gone with if I can’t do it myself.
Those shops are great for stuff you don't want to do yourself or don't have time to mess with!
Good stuff G.🤘
Thank you! We appreciate your support over here!
Guys and girls, f em, A. Don’t buy one or B. Buy it and don’t use the BS accessories. Let them know the price up front is all I’m paying.
That's exactly what makes a used bike and aftermarket accessories just that more valuable!
Id love to have money enough to buy a new bike! Ive always bought used.
You can do so much with a good used motorcycle!
Pay-to-play schemes are increasingly prevalent in the automotive industry. Companies like Harley-Davidson can generate recurring revenue from a single motorcycle throughout its lifespan. Imagine buying a fully-loaded CVO and selling it four years later without those premium features - they've been deactivated. You'd be forced to sell the bike at a significant loss, as the new buyer would need to pay Harley-Davidson to reactivate the options. This creates a lucrative revenue model for the manufacturer, who essentially sells the same features multiple times. Naturally, this raises the question: will we see a rise in motorcycle "jailbreaking" similar to what happened with iPhones?
They all want that continued revenue stream year after year!
Preach brother! I bought a Nightster Special and it has the buttons for heated grips, but no actual heated grips… And now that I bought some and put them on, I still need to bring it into the dealership to be flashed to get them to actually work! No monthly fee for my navigation though… Just runs through the Harley app.
Congratulations on the new ride! Those are some cool bikes! That's exactly the BS I was getting at with this video! It's pretty much flat extortion if you ask me!
Some Motocross bikes have Modes that you have to pay extra to Unlock .. KTM for Example ..
KTM is going full on with this business model if they are doing it already on motocross bikes!
@@GixxerFoo Some one stole a new Truck Load of KTM Dirt Bikes and they won't even Run. The Dealer has to Flash them before they can even be started. I suppose they could strip a lot of parts off from them.
That's a hard nope for me. I will not buy any bike with crap. Shit, I won't buy a car with that crap on it.
I can't stand all the junk in cars these days. Heat, air and radio is all l want. Apparently a manual transmission is too much to ask for now.
@@GixxerFoopeople won't buy enough manual gearboxes in most car models to make it worth doing the epa certification and assembly line work to produce them. Been that way for 30 years
Yeah, and the manual transmission in cars has got to be the easiest, cheapest and most efficient transmission now even though no one in this country wants them anymore. I prefer manual transmissions in automobiles even though my current car has an automatic. It’s even a 2003 model year vehicle without all the electronic crap on it.
Back in the 80-90s, Iron Horse started a FTF campaign with Harley's scalping of customers with their 2yr waiting list and $5000 over MSRP BS! Turning the emblems upside down was another one of their ways to show disgust with the factory policies. Such as suing aftermarket parts manufacturers and independent repair shops. The emblems are still flipped on one of my bikes and jackets. Screw 'em. 3 of my bikes are pre-AMF. And I ripped the M-M FI out of my Evo as H-D won't support or re-flash it when it goes wonky.
But I do pay a fee every 3mos for my Sirius subscription.
I remember that and Harley screwing people waaaaay over MSRP!
@@GixxerFoo They tried to sue S&S for making 'fake' Harley motor parts, when S&S helped develop their 80in Shovelhead. A lot of classic iron that Harley uses in ads and on t-shirts, but doesn't support, wouldn't be running if not for S&S!
Just got first bike in 1961 (Cushman Eagle) , first Harley in 1970 (1964 XLCH) and current bike in 1986 (1980 FLT). I have about 250,000 miles and have replaced parts with either NOS or improved aftermarket items. 7:22 Funny I often hear “I miss my old shovel or don’t know why I sold it or “ is it for sale?” I get as many smiles per mile as my friends on mostly ten or less year old bikes that they can’t work on.
The older models are where it's at! You can't beat something that's paid for that you can work on yourself and it not cost you a fortune.
Another cash grab
That's what it is, they want a continued flow of cash on the same motorcycle they just sold you.
Who buys a Harley in this day and age.
People with a lot of money or willing to take on some serious debt.
I feel a strange disturbance in the force. As of a million efi systems were suddenly replaced with Mikuni flat slides…!
It's funny cause that's the fix for a Magnetti FI system that's having issues!
The day I hear HD does this is the day I trade it in and buying a metric cruiser.
Even the metric cruisers are getting hard to find, they quit making the bigger ones.
Cars are doing the same garbage. Easiest answer is buy used.
Screw the OEM’s and let em fail.
That's where I am at, I can't support these new bikes with how much they cost anymore. I can't speak for everyone but I can't buy a 40,000 dollar car or truck let alone a motorcycle for that much.
That's how it works. Stop buying, things change fast.
Good. I think it's hilarious. Real bikers are our own mechanics and technicians. The rest SHOULD be handing HD dealers money for their butt jewelry.
I work on the late models for fun in retirement but HDs being basically lifetime machines when chosen and modified wisely I don't need a new one unless it's an insurance total loss which
is very common for cosmetic damage. Bubba's bagger falls over because Bubba thought he bought skill when he bought the bike (just like crotch rocketeers do with theirs more often than not), that low speed prang totals the bike and some enterprising wrench snags it for couch money.
The solution is ancient and referred to long ago as "bobbing" wherein one discards all the "car parts" (if you need distraction when riding why ride in the first place? My senses are used for situational awareness) and strips down machines to their essentials. What does not exist does not break nor require maintenance. HDs are ideal for that sort of thing because the enormous aftermarket includes people who detest complexity.
So you came from the school when there were real mechanics in the service department. Literally doing diagnostics with your hands in there and not looking at flow charts from Mother Harley on something less than 10 years old. They only want Screamin Eagle engine kits, bar changes, pull it down for paint damage and reinstall these days.
Great comment 👍. This is real clown world territory they are taking people into, it is beyond me why anyone would want any of this shit.
Any generation Harley that comes before, something like that rolling out, will prove to be the most valuable.
But honestly, anything Harley can do like that, someone out there will figure out a workaround for it.
The older bikes just look better in my opinion, it for sure won't be long and someone is gonna have a solution.
i read that a guy had a brand new GMC diesel with everything available on it. supposedly, he took it in for a minor qlitch and first oil change. Tech guy hooks into the trucks computer, comes out, and tells the guy his vehicle was no longer under warranty. he has 2 miles over on his mileage for the warranty oil change.
What?! The are getting ridiculous on these warranties!
Fucking picks. 🤢🤮
I own my stuff period.
That's how we should all feel!
Packages is the was harley is going. I just hope they don't come with subscriptions. HD is going comunistic. I don't think that will go over to well.
Their slowly shifting their business model and I don't think it's going in a good direction!
Sounds like my "new" bike will continue to be my 2016 Slim. I'll just upgrade and take care of her.
Got one of the best years of 103's in that bike, I would hang onto it!
@@GixxerFoo I plan on it.❤👍👍
I drive a old pick up, and ride a Harley that has no gizmos or gadgets.
I drive old vehicles myself too, my personal bike being a 2016 is about as new as I want to go. I am ready to get another Dyna with an Evo personally.
Nope ✌️
Especially after you pay 30K for a new bike and they want you to pay for stuff already on the bike just to use it.
Just one more nail in harleys coffin.
I've bought my last harley davidson. I'll stick with my old 2007 FHLTCUi.
Nothing wrong with that bike at all, if you get bored with it it's cheaper to change it up than it is to buy a new one!
Im an AMF guy. Once the motor and trans are rebuilt with modern gaskets the leaks and failures disappear. I would never have anything on a vehicle thats controlled by a subscription. All that stuff is available aftermarket for a lot less money anyway, and theres no subscription involved. I havent been a fan of anything Harley puts out since they went to all EFI.
You know that's why the shovel got such a bad reputation, it just had everything going against it during it's time. Lead out of the fuel and right down to just piss poor quality control at the factory. Shovel is a good motor once it's been gone through and yes if you know how to maintain it and keep up with it.
Instruct the dealer to remove ALL subscription items (and reduce price) and fit those things you consider essential at no cost. Watch them squeal.
Oh yeah they don't like to do that kinda thing!
I’ll stick with my vtwin
I’ve heard some vehicles they can turn off the whole car and u can’t do anything with it till u make that payment all this new tech is cool but it’s all garbage I work a body shop at a Chevy we have a brand new 2500 Silverado with 20k and the frame is already cracking in half
You're not far off there, some if the check engine light is on it will disable to air conditioner.
Unreal, ridiculous clown world junk.
Just another reason to buy used!
They are literally pushing people to the used market!
This would kill their sales which are already suffering
The CEO's new plan is to build and ship less motorcycles to reduce inventory. But at the same time they are making more profit on every bike boosting revenue. I don't know what phase 2 of his plan is but this doesn't seem like a long term solution for the company.
I bet some Tech genius is going to go in to that unit and hack it and sell it on eBay, so you have all the functions. 😂
You know the aftermarket companies are already working on reverse engineering it all.
This stuff ain't motorcycling!
The whole point of motorcycling is to leave all that stuff behind!
This is what happens when the people making the decisions aren't from USA.
This CEO is gonna cash his checks, get his bonuses and tout what he did for Harley and then leave. He's gonna leave them holding the bag and it's everyone in the factories and lower level jobs that will suffer.

You say that.
In the UK we had a DIY store called Homebase.
( A subsidiary of a UK supermarket) that was taken over by an Australian company called Wesfarmers.
Who rebranded 24 pilot (165 total ) stores as Bunnings.
..
As we know Australia is a hot country not so the UK.
Anyways Bunnings stocked all their UK stores with Australian themed products like BBQs etc..not realising the UK's weather is temperate and we get about 2 weeks sun in the summer.
At the same time also got rid of all
the UK appropriate related product lines..
..
Needless to say 2 YEARS later Bunnings UK closed down./sold for £1.

Wesfarmers lost £340M with total losses estimated at £1B.....
The only down side, FOR HARLEY, is that unlike cars, bikes are MUCH EASIER to simply strip everything off it and replace it with aftermarket parts that you DON'T need to pay to use. For example you can replace the factory heated grips that would cost you $12 a month to use, with aftermarket ones that you can use for free. Its so much simpler to remove and replace parts and accessories on a motorcycle than on a car, so that is why i think Harley wont go TOO FAR with this idea and even IF they did, it wouldn't make them as much money as they THINK it would.
Harley is gonna feel a revolt before too long I feel!
Owned Harleys for last 25 years no more.
No more unless it's at least 25 years old and build without all the electronic junk.
