  • I am a serious man. Yet I believe there is a place for Fun in hard work. It begins with how we approach our tasks. If you get to this understanding, you'll still have to feel the pain, but you don't have to suffer. Change your perspective and change your experience.

Thanks for this. I have got this down pat for my training but I struggle to do this in my career. I will try taking some new approaches to my tasks.

I want to thank you for all the educating you do. I may have to make an Instagram to see about your training, or to learn more. I'm a year and a half in, and currently teaching myself to setup my own programs, and experimenting on myself. All your information and information from others on youtube have helped tremendously. Thank you.

Before viewing this, my motto is Transcendence through suffering. So the hard work has a function at all times. Becoming stronger.

In your view, is the gate the suffering or the work?

Good talk! I think that is one of the lessons lifting teach us: hard things don't have to break us. We can fail over and over and over again, and still get back under that bar. We can recover from catastrophic injuries and continue the lifting journey for a lifetime. And the stronger you get, the harder it gets. It's a great metaphor for life, and one that I try to teach my boys.

Resilience, tolerance to "life as it is", acceptance of difficulties, endurance,... the list goes on. I agree with you that if we listen lifting can be a teacher. It is an undercurrent of all sports, but some more than others. "Training as teacher" is a great way to see it!

I think there's a way definitely. Starting out i never loved working out or liked doing anything physical in general. However i'm 3 years deep now and i haven't missed a week since i started, i even had a phase where i would (stupidly) go do stuff like arms on rest days, which did me no service but i hardly cared - because it was fun.

I think you find mostly joy in what your strengths are. And those are your strengths because of the joy you've put in.
I also believe some things in your DNA are pulling you to favour certain things that aren't exactly taught with words. For instance - the men on my fathers side of the family has been soldiers for as long as we can look back. And i found out about that recently (when im getting ready to leave myself).

I can 100% agree with JM on changing your workouts to “make” it fun. I trained as a bodybuilder for a couple decades and always had fun, but the last 5 years or so I can honestly say it wasn’t fun. I still worked out 4-5 days a week, and on a certain level I enjoyed it, but it wasn’t fun. I lost the ‘fire in my belly’ for training.
Couple years ago I began powerlifting. (Long story) Oh man did I ever find the ‘fun’ again!!! I’m having a blast every day I train. I friggin love it. Point is, I made a pretty drastic change. Maybe most people won’t need to make such a big change but I think if you change your goals that could light a spark. My 2 cents….

For me I love the physical effort. Just like when I was a kid and I loved wrestling and football. I like the competition but the actual physical task itself was fun. Now as an adult I still feel that away but it’s about lifting. I will also note lifting gives me a way to positively channel the daily negative emotions and frustrations I face. Of course at the end of the day the main goal is to get better and get stronger, but enjoying the process itself is a plus.

I agree 100% with this. Giving full effort and pushing myself is what I enjoy. It's not a sensation of pain I enjoy, but a feeling of having given all I can. Intent and effort are some of the most important things in training I believe.
Edit: Throughout the stuff when I need to push myself I constantly focus on the result I will achieve later on because I have pushed through a set or exercise. I do honestly enjoy this feeling of putting in hard effort though.
