- I was tired of having my rods laying down in the front of the kayak always getting tangled with each other. So I decided to build me a custom rod holder to fit my pro angler. You can easily build your own without the fancy tools. I just wanted it to fit perfectly into my kayak.
Sched 40 PVC used: all 1 1/2"
Cross Fitting x 5

Great video. I was able to pick up on what you used. I'll likely have to configure to fit my kayak...but I get the idea. Especially like how you left the two joints loose. I live in the Tampa Bay area and the mangroves are tough to navigate with the rods up in the air. Thanks for your service!

when i mad mine i used a big pot of boiling water to soften the pvc and it worked great. just a thought.

Mark - thanks for the video. I used this to build mine and your video helped greatly. I liked how you turned the 1-1/2 down to fit the rod holder. Can you share what diameter you turned the OD to? I will try this on my next build for a buddy. I ended up using 1-1/4 sch 40 and added a 130 O ring. Just didn’t like the idea of heating up the pipe and cramming it into the rod holders. The O ring route seems like it will work fine. Also, what are you using to attach your net and flag? I like that setup. Thanks again for all of the videos.

What size were the original rod holder holes on the kayak that you had to turn the tubes down? What size did you turn the tubes down to? Looking to make some for my Old Town PDL 106.

Hey MDLR Fishing just giving you a little help if you take and use lacquer thinner and wipe all the PVC down then take 120 grit sandpaper and sand the PVC and then paint with primer and then paint it won't chip off and Flake as bad just trying to help out but great work

That looks awesome! Do you have any problems with keeping the rods in a certain position? Do they fall down when upright? When lowered, do the rods slide out?
They stay put when upright. When I lower them horizontally for transport I have to use a small bungee to keep them from sliding forward and eventually out.
what is so hard about changing bait/lures that you need 5 rods. I've never understood. I'm a saltwater fisherman and use only two rods. one with live bait. one for plastics. I only see the numerous rods in the bass fishing community and have never understood why you can't just change your lures. thank you for your service to this great country.
+dustin arthur there's several reasons why I use different rods. If I'm tournament fishing it saves time. If there's structure in the water I want something that'll help me get the fish out of it. Some of my reels have different types of line to cut through said structure. Sometimes I enjoy fishing super light lures that'll be hard to cast with a big rod, so I have to carry small rods to fish them properly. There's so many applications that go into fishing that I couldn't possibly name them all but this holder works for me.
I also love your approach to a simplistic style. When I want to target only one fish or just don't want the hassle of lugging all the rods around. I will go out as a minimalist and enjoy an easy day on the water. Whatever works for you is all that matters. Keep fishing and many tight lines your way. Thanks for watching.

Mark, so after heating, the pvc kinda gives to the shape of the rod holder?
Has the spray paint held up, I heard it doesn't stick well to pvc?
Yes, after heating the PVC gets soft and allows you to slide it into the rod holder for a very snug fit. As for the spray paint, on my first rod holder it didn't stick to well. Partly because of the paint i used and not sanding the PVC. On my second one I used spray paint for PVC and roughed up the PVC before painting. Regardless of how good the paint job is you're gonna have scratches show through eventually.

5s management is used in workplaces to keep things neat and clean. I think it's from japan. I asked because there are painted line on the floor.
Hey mark....would you be able to detail all the pieces used?
Pause the video at 0:35 and the fittings listed below are laid out.
10 couplers
5 tee fittings
4 forty five degree fittings
2 ninety degree elbows
you'll also need a 5 foot or larger piece of 1.5 inch pvc to make 20 two inch pieces to use as couplers to fit all the fittings together. And to also make two 9 inch pieces to fit into the rod holders.
Tip: theres no need to mill the 9 inch sections of 1.5 inch pvc down to size. I made another rod holder for my outback and just used a torch to heat the pvc up and slowly work it into the rod holders. Be patient when doing it and it will be very snug and hold really well.

You should make some more and the sell them for cheap...I mean still make some profit but dont charger 100-200 like most of the kayak parts companies.
The idea of making money is always appealing but the time and money required to make one of these doesn't leave much room for profit. After buying all the PVC from Lowes or Home Depot one would spend around $45. I would rather help someone build one over a nice cold drink!!! Tight Lines and thanks for watching!

They're not sold in stores. I've been asked to make them before but it would cost too much. The parts alone would cost approximately $45 - $50. And then shipping would be another $20 - $30. I don't even know what I would charge for my time building it. You would be better off just buying the PVC and building it yourself to save some money. Every kayak is different and fitting it would need to be done during the build.

you can use a torch to heat up the PVC and make it soft so you can slowly slide it into the flush mount rod holders. That's really the only hard part of the build. Good luck!

how much did you shave off the PVC?
That's a hard one to answer because the pvc is tapered due to the rod tube being tapered. So here goes, at the bottom of the pvc I have a measurement of.085" and its tapered. The best advice I can give you is to do what I did when I made my second one for the Outback. Use a torch and heat up the pvc. While it's hot and moldable, slowly slide it into the rod holder. Twist it back and forth while trying your best to keep it straight. I was able to insert it about 6 - 8 inches. Don't worry about it not going all the way in. The fit is going to be extremely tight and snug. Good luck with the build!

Awesome rod holder nice video . Question 1 what are you using for the net and flag holder? Question 2 how do I determine what size to fit in existing rod holder? I will have to have it shaved at a shop I don't have those kind of tools and will need to know what to ask for. I use a Ram Tube to hold my net and a Ram ready Visacarbon Flag.
There's no need for the fancy tools. They just made for a better video. I built another rod holder exactly the same for my Outback. Only thing I did different was use a torch to heat up the pvc and then push it into the built in rod holder.
