I've seen some guys take a cooler, and turn that into a storage bin, with rod holders and all that. I like the idea of using half for my lunch and drinks/ice pack, and a cutting board as a divider, then room on the other side for tackle bins. Once the lunch is gone, throw a few fish in there as well.
I got my crates for free from the back of a gas station. I noticed a stack sitting there for a while. I asked the guy if u could take a couple, now I got a kayak cart.
Love it! I do have the old yakpak crate but I did add the bungee cords for the rod holders per your 1st build. I found a that if you use heat shrink tubes on the hook of the bungee cord it doesn't scratch your reels up as much
Great video I really enjoyed version 1.0and I really enjoyed 2.0. Since you said, you love tools, you should buy a pair of flush cut at Harbor freight. They’re like four bucks no more sharp edges with zip ties.
Using the top section of the black crate you threw away will fit on the bottom. It will fit the crate perfectly, water will run through and it will be lighter.
Love your design and a tip for a anyone putting this together, take a pair of plyers and twist around the ends of the tie wraps and they will come off nicely with no sharp edges and flush
It may not work with your application due to the rudder location, but you could cut the left over section of the black crate to make your stand off to lift the crate of of the bottom of the yak. I thought of this only after I tossed the remnant of the second crate when I built may last crate. Arrgh!
One thing you could use on the PVC for the reel seat is a rotary tool with cutoff blades and drum sanding mandrels. You might even be able to use the rotary to cut the milk crate and drill the holes for the zip tie and bungee cord. One place I would look at for the bungee/shock cord is Paracord Planet as they have a large variety of sizes and colors as well as end fasteners and tools, one item to look at would be a fid. A fid is used for threading paracord or bungee/shock cord through holes and prevents the cut end from fraying as you thread it. I would go to a store like Home Depot to see if they have some scrap 1x4 for the spacer as you can sometimes get that for free. I was thinking of using a nut and bolt near the bottom of the pipe to help in holding the rod up and not put a strain on the reel itself.
Killer video and I'm sure that if a person doesn't have the basic tools needed to construct this awesome crate, surely they know someone who does. Besides, if you don't personally own the tools displayed in video than you should probably go ahead and make the investment, because a person needs tools lol
Great job. Allot of good ideas. I do have 2 suggestions. When I get a new kayak I replace all bungees with the thicker marine grade like you used. Like you said it is not expensive. The second is the latch you made, replace the bungee on that one also.
Thank you for the idea and design Daren! I just made one, but did a couple things a little differently. Firstly, I used a cut up cam strap as a locking latch, it wont stretch out over time as much, but it was a pain to install as I sewed the tag end onto the crate. Second, I routed the shock cord around the rim of the lid section so there is just a touch more room up top. One minor design flaw I noticed through watching a bunch of your videos, is that the top gets deformed from the pressure of the shock cord pulling the sides in, I didn't particularly like that, so I made a small square out of quarter round moulding, that just sits under the cord and is held on by the pressure. Finally, I used the upper sections of the top cut crate and used that as the rod holder spacers, which worked out better for me as I purchased some rod holders off of amazon that have a slight standoff where they bolt on, it also allowed my to run the bolts all the way through the sides of the crate to make a bomber connection holding them on. If you would like some pictures feel free to reach out!

To avoid knocking out another rod and reel when reaching for them, I wonder if simply clocking the rod holders differently would solve that, versus the differing "fanned" angles? By the way, what they charge for these yak boxes is ridiculous, in fact, all yak accesories are over-priced.
For those complaining about not having tools.....WELL, go make friends with someone who has the tools. Trade services, or pay a few bucks. It is not that hard. If someone need assistance in making something, all they got to do is ask.
Different lures, different line types, different rod power and action, different gear ratioed reels for different cover and structure. I will go through all 6 rods in a matter of minutes sometimes based on what I see visually and what I see on my graph

Can go to home depot and slowly buy tools as you do little projects then next thing you know you're self sufficient-ish... 🤯
serious question, is you ABS pipe "Cellular core"? I cannot for the life of me find solid core ABS pipe in California 1.5" schedule 40. HELP please :)
Yeah.. much harder to source. You may just need to go with the readily available white pipe
What diameter shock cord do you use?
Hey Kirby 3/16... heres the link if you need it geni.us/ShockCord
To avoid knocking out another rod and reel when reaching for them, I wonder if simply clocking the rod holders differently would solve that, versus the differing "fanned" angles? By the way, what they charge for these yak boxes is ridiculous, in fact, all yak accesories are over-priced.
I agree.. those boxes are stupid $$$$
For those complaining about not having tools.....WELL, go make friends with someone who has the tools. Trade services, or pay a few bucks. It is not that hard. If someone need assistance in making something, all they got to do is ask.
Big facts there Mikell
A regular retail milk crate usually cost around 6 dollars. This price sounds like a stolen one resell... Not sure, but fishy😅
I bought it at a local thrift store.
What guy doesn't own an assortment of basic hand tools?
I know quite a bit... to each his own I guess
Why do kayak fishers take a lot of rods with them ?
Different lures, different line types, different rod power and action, different gear ratioed reels for different cover and structure. I will go through all 6 rods in a matter of minutes sometimes based on what I see visually and what I see on my graph
I’m looking to buy my first fishing kayak any recommendations?
@@W4Aw Budget?
About £1000 I would even pick up a second hand one if it was a good brand of kayak , I live in the UK
