Good job. If you want to get the wheels out of the way add two tees pointing back, slide wheels in, wheels now laying flat wheels toward back. You just picked up tons of space behind seat for gear, tackle. I did it...works awesome.
i built a set 3 or 4 years ago for pa12. Glued all fitting but 1 90. You put stainles sheet metal screws to hold it together. And so you can take it off if you want to later.
MDLR Fishing Instead of the 45`s i used another set of 90's so it can sit back further and go around a milk crate. Sure wish I would of made. a video of it and posted it. But yours is exactly how mine was done. Besides the little changes i made. Great vid....
nice! i gotta make one for my oasis. i was just going to attach rod holders to a milk crate and strap them down in the back but i think you may change my mind how i want it done. great video keep it up
Would it be possible to cut a slit in the pvc portion that goes into the molded rod holders? Seems that depending on the width of the saw blade it could also work....thoughts?
Very nice build and I will be building one for my kayak... the cost however is nowhere near the $30 or so be ause just the 4 cross joints cost $8 each... I bought a 5' section of 1 1/2 pvc, 8 couplers, 4 cross joints, 4 45's, 2 90's, and 4 3nd caps, pvc glue and it came out to $94... oh and a 5 gallon lowes bucket...
On the Outback you can up grade the center hatch too a rectangular one 98-100$ . And you can get a molded bucket that fits nicely . Hobie makes hay on assessories for sure .
Absolutely the best DIY rod holder build I've seen...really nice job!!! And you can add me to the list of a buyer if you ever decide to make and sell them....
Why do you use the couplings on your vertical ends of the cross pieces? Do you find that it makes it more stable or is for visual aesthetics? Thanks for the video, I plan on using your idea with a few adjustments of my own.
Agree.... I made mine a few years ago out of PVC too. Not sure if you took notice when we were fishing a few weeks ago. I set mine back a bit really because I have long arms and it is easier for me if the rods are not right behind me. Also because I left room for a cooler right behind my seat. It just worked out for me that way. The best part about making these is that it is totally custom and PVC is easy to work with. Great job in showcasing yours to everyone.
Love the build and vid man!...inspired me to build my own on my channel...ive got a little tip for you for the future when you go to paint PVC, im a plumber, once you are done and have it all glued up...take some clear pvc cleaner(its a primer)..and go over the whole thing then u can paint without sanding...it takes the outer coat off and prepares it to recieve the paint better...just my two cents...again awesome build and video
Lowes also gives a veterans discount! at least here in Kansas. I bought an Oklahoma Joe smoker thats how I know.Like the videos ,I'm thinking of a sundolphin10 to test the waters so to speak?
Yo te recomendaría colocar un pasador para aguantar el puente que se mueve de frente hacia atrás, para que no se valla a virar, pero tu invento es muy bueno👍
I'm going to use that idea because I was looking for an extra space to hold my anchor (for quick deployment). I'd also add permanent bungie cords so that I can secure all the gear when I'm not fishing or if I hit big surf (Have you seen those guys who roll in the surf and spend the rest of the week looking for their gear?)
When making the reel grooves on he top of the rod holders, do I take a certain size drill bit to drill a hole first in the pvc and if so, how far down on the pvc do I go down on the pvc? Basically, how do I make those reel seat grooves in the PVC? Thanks
I use the biggest size drill bit in the set. It only has to be big enough for the spinning reel seat neck. You could also try using a dremmel and cutting wheel. As far as depth to cut, I go almost halfway through the coupler. Thanks for watching and good luck with the build!
Hey Mark great setup, cant wait to see it on the water. Can you show us the actual damage on the pro angler 12, can it be repaired? Are going to keep it as a spare or junk it? Great videos by the way keep it up.
There's a small indentation on the bottom side towards the rear of the kayak. I've put her on the water overnight with 200 lbs of weight and no water taken onboard. So i'm keeping it as a spare. I'm still skeptical about putting all my expensive gear on her for a 10 hour day. But once I do a trip on her with nothing onboard and everything goes ok, I may start filming on her again. Keeping my fingers crossed!!!
Great video! I want to do it but am concerned that I will have trouble getting to all my gear in my milk crate in the back of my outback. Have you figured out gear storage yet? The circular storage area below the knees is not to practical.
looks so nice but the only issue I see with it is that it kinda restricts you a bit from accessing any cargo in the back (cooler, or live well that is usually back there) I have a hobie adventure island and have a nice big space to put any cargo in the back and this would restrict my acess to anything in the back I cant imagine an outback or revolution that is much smaller. I think it woult be better if it curved around the back of the boat on my hobie it would be a nightmare because the rods would be so far away but on yours it would be ideal because your gear would be in front and your rods would not be too far back. Idk just my two cents. Anyways thank you for your service. oh and watch out for those carts wheel carts u are using that go through the scupper holes. They will be the end of your hobie. I had the exact same one and it made a hole right in the scupper hole of my (now sold) revolution. I had to take it to a hobie dealer, get it fixed for 150$ and I couldn't even sell it for 800 because no one wants a boat with a hole in it no matter how well its been fixed, without a massive discount.
Mark great job! Did you make your cuts first in the PVC before you heated it or did you heat it first. Also, how did you get that nice rolled look around the edge of your cuts?
This looks great. One quick question... when you flared out the top with the bottle how did you cut out the small gap for the reel handle? Dremel or something similiar?
@@MDLRFishing I bought all of the stuff today for this incredible build you have shared...I was scratching my head on how to make such clean gaps for the reel handles. I figured I would find my answer somewhere in this thread! I'm putting this on my canoe...Thanks Again for the share!!!
This is good for fishing in a pond but what happens when you launch in surf and you capsize, even if you poles are tethered. and your in 4' or 5' of water? I think having 4 rods on board is not realistic in that situation and a rod tube is better, where you rod is below in storage.
Great observation, This rod holder shines during inshore use. I don't use it for offshore because of the probability to break a rod if I turtle going out or coming back in. A rod tube is out of the question on this kayak, you must have a non Hobie.
Thanks for the video . I just built one thanks to you !!! . Question, why didn't you use the black pvc instead of the white and painting it afterwards. I built exactly as you instructed . I just thought about it afterwards about using the black lol
No cracks just heavy stress marks where she was bent out of shape. Was told that the plastic has been compromised and could give out when I least expect it.
MDLR Fishing id take it to a repair shop. they make color matched repair sticks. have them scrape out the stressed areas and fill in with fresh material. just how a crack would be repaired. really enjoying your videos. keep up the great content. if your ever in the Boston area hit me up.
MDLR Fishing so looks like I need to repair my as well. I have a super thin material at my bow I need to beef up. one bad bump away from giving up. I'm going to use a product called 655 g/flex , I'll be making a video on it. I'll link you in the comments.
Get can of etching primer in paint department prime and paint but could just 320-320 sandpaper then spray same process I us to hydro dip items hope helps you out
Trust me I would love to sell them but shipping and the price I would have to charge wouldn't be worth it for you. I'd recommend you trying to build it yourself and saving the money. It's a super easy build.
Super rigid fully functional nice looking rod holders .
Thanks 👍

Awesome job. Glad to see another Veteran with the same passion. Retired U.S. Air Force here ;)
Thanks, I'm loving life right now!
Black and yellow look great together
Great video, would you not just use black pipe? Here in the UK you can get black or white pipe.
That pvc flaring technique is awesome. Definitely going to be using that to build the rod holders for my setup.
Good luck with the build.
Any idea if the hobie trax 2 cart will also fit with these dimensions ? I think the tires are bit larger in diameter
Built a rod rack I also did a removable Nav Light I fish at night a lot . Sprayed mine with Rustolum bed liner , gives a ruff finish .
I bet the that look is beast!

how much for pvc rod holder? can you please make me one for my hobie mirage outbak 2021 please
Have you experimented with 1 1/4 pvc and black pvc to try and save weight?
I haven’t
Would it be possible to cut a slit in the pvc portion that goes into the molded rod holders? Seems that depending on the width of the saw blade it could also work....thoughts?
So many variations of this set up you can build , great video!
Thanks
Terrific, Thanks for taking the time to put this step by step including parts list together! And Thank You for your service!!

Hey man where are you stationed at? I’m active as well down in Pensacola Florida
That looks great man !!! I am going to build one for my boat this weekend. Thanks for sharing.
Hope it turns out well!!!
Nice job Mark! I was getting ready to make a similar video for the rocket launchers on my PA.

How do you cast with all the rods behind you?
I just made one for my Native kayak. Did you put anything on the black spray paint to keep it from rubbing off? I think I'm really going to like it. 😁
I didn’t
@MDLRFishing not to bad if I say so myself. 😁
@MDLRFishing oops, tried to attach a picture.

Nice, thanks for tip! It's a pain to sand pvc. Good luck with your build!
just a suggestion that i saw somewhere else. cut a slit to the 4" mark instead. that will allow the pvc to fit in the hole snugly.

Very nicely done. Is that a safety/visibility flag at the aft of the kayak?
Great guy to share that info. Real nice!

Great video! Will the hobie livewell fit pr does it need mods?
Thanks for sharing. How did you cut the groove?
Large drill press with 3/4” drill bit.
You should use tees instead of the 90 degree elbows so you have two extra rod holders

For the cannons can I make them out of 2 inches ?
Is there blueprints on this or size of pipe

I rarely place gear back there. The hardest thing I put back there was my minnow bucket and I didn't have to much trouble getting to them.
Thanks!
Looks a lot better than store bought
are you able to remove the rod holder or is it stuck there?
completely removable.
Man that’s nice I love to fish and owned a boat r 2. But I’m afraid of that I don’t swim.
Good afternoon, did you still use the lightning kayak
Prices went up so much since when you did it five years ago that I paid $88 just for the PVC piping and stuff
looks so nice but the only issue I see with it is that it kinda restricts you a bit from accessing any cargo in the back (cooler, or live well that is usually back there) I have a hobie adventure island and have a nice big space to put any cargo in the back and this would restrict my acess to anything in the back I cant imagine an outback or revolution that is much smaller. Yes it most definitely restricts the use of the rear storage.
How did you flare out the pvc?
Well I know what I'm doing over the Christmas break now thanks for posting video
Mark great job! Did you make your cuts first in the PVC before you heated it or did you heat it first. Also, how did you get that nice rolled look around the edge of your cuts?
You send in Italy?
I like the black paint
This looks great. One quick question... when you flared out the top with the bottle how did you cut out the small gap for the reel handle? Dremel or something similiar?

Hey there! I painted mine but they chip super easily. Does this happen to yours? If not, what paint and how did you do it?
Thanks!
I sanded it and used a pvc spray paint. Holding up pretty well.
Nice job! You should hydrodip them with a cool design.
Hello guy!
What are the pipe cut sizes

You may have said it in video and I missed it, but is this removable? I want to build it but don't want anything permanent
Yes completely removable.
Thank you for your service 🙏🙏
Hey Great Video! I am a new kayak fisherman and want to make this rig. I have the hobie compass. Do you think the same dimensions will work? Thank you
I’m not sure, I don’t know the dimensions of the Compas.
Love it ... I am going to try it myself soon . Thanks for the motivation bud
Speechless
(that's the best comment I can give because you did it all and you did it right!!!)
Cool video.
FYI: A 45 is an elbow (or ell as we call it in the pipeline industry)
Thanks for the video . I just built one thanks to you !!! .
Question, why didn't you use the black pvc instead of the white and painting it afterwards.
I built exactly as you instructed . I just thought about it afterwards about using the black lol
The black just doesn't look as nice when put together.
Black PVC pipe breaks down incredibly fast and sunshine and becomes very brittle
Thanks so much!!! Just made one for my pa14 and it looks amazing!!!
You just gave me inspiration for my Jeep.
Would you try to build one athat work with the livewell
I haven't
how much you charge to make one?
Sweet. Have you made one for the 2019 Outback? If so, are there any dimensions changes?
I haven't made one for it.
Would this also work to the homie compass?
Hobie compass*
Never mind the compass rod holder spots are 1 7/8 not 1 1/2
nicely done
Thanks!
Only 4inches of depth?
Fantastic video Mark, I need to make one of these!
It's an easy build Devon.
You should sell them. I'll buy one I have a pa 14
I just bought a 2019 Hobie Pro Angler. Will it use the same items?
Yes but you need to add one more cross fitting.
Can you send me your video to build a pole holder for the hobie pro 14
Looks great! Great job brother. How did you cut the notches out? Definitely going to try and build one for my yak.
Used a 1” drill bit on a drill press.
Ok cool. Thanks for your reply.
Hello sir I have a 2021 p12 that my mom bought me would you sale me one for it my dad is no longer here thanks.

Blow torch, lol. Good idea.
👍
A heat gun is better than torch to heat the pipe
you can have only one but they also give seniors and price match, all of which is 10%!! just ask!

Nice, but how to paint
Get can of etching primer in paint department prime and paint but could just 320-320 sandpaper then spray same process I us to hydro dip items hope helps you out

very nice,tank`s

Are ther nutria in Virginia?
Nice... Thanks for the tip...
Instead of melting why not sand the PVC ? Just saying a belt for a belt sander can be flipped. No risk of damage to the kayak
