John Donovan deserves all the recognition here. A year to the day! It's like destiny that he died in order to save them.
God saved them through John🙏
PCT hiker, RIP
They helped carrying John's lost to his loved ones too.
@user-id8sq7iz2kI was thinking it worked both ways. Very mysterious touch to it with the dates .. her father's birthday, the day they discovered the man .. his praycard. It's like one of those campfire tales.
They were meant to get lost in order to let John's family know what really happened to him?!
Some tour leader… “we’re missing two people at the top of this mountain. I’m sure they’re fine. Probably just took a cab back.” Jeez

My wife and one of her girlfriends got lost in the Grand Canyon years ago. They had hiked a lot of miles together, prior, and her friend used to make jokes about my wife being overly prepared, whether it be a day hike, or a multi day backpacking excursion. Her over preparedness likely saved their lives in the grand canyon though.
100% being over prepared saved their lives
It's better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it. There's no such thing as over prepared. Hope for the best, expect anything.
Yes, as long as you are picking the right preparation tools.
I thought the whole point off a headcount was if not check U don't leave
Exactly!!!
Or at least alert authorities so they can check other sources of information like the hotel, conference, etc.
No... The reason for head count is to make sure everyone has paid for a ticket 🤣🤣
Im surpised they didnt sue
Assuming they got a taxi does not rule out they also thought they may of gotten lost.
Once you realize you’re lost. STOP!!!
Take account of how long you walked. Make some sort of mark that you can see easily. Then start to walk in a direction for the amount of time you walked. If you find nothing in that direction, go back to your mark. Then go in another direction.
Repeat until you find your way out.
I’ve never heard this advice and I like it!

The dumbest sht I've watched. Head count... Oh someone's missing... Oh well let's go guys! 😂
being positive I guess lol. this falls on the management, They should have fixed rule to not assume such a thing
The nice thing about being 61, and having a poor memory, is that I can watch these over and over again and it will be like the first time. This sounds odd, but maybe John's spirit guided them out.
You ain’t 90, bro, take it down a notch.
I watch them over and over too.
God bless you
Lol. You have a good attitude towards short term memory loss
What? 61 and your memory is fading already?
Why didn't they just stay where they could hear voices until the next tour came by? Even if it's a full 24 hours that's better than wondering around a remote wilderness
Or just shout lol
Because if it wasn't for stupid people, there wouldn't be shows like this.
Because they aren't the brightest as you can tell. If I were them I would've started shouting and whistling until I got someone's attention.

They didn't almost starve to death after 4 days 😅. They had water available. I went without food for a whole week on purpose and drank only water after having my baby to lose the weight I gained..then ate 1x a day every other day for another 2weeks.
How would they have taken a taxi home if they had to go on a zip wire back to the bus 🙄stupid bus woman
The headcount was taken at the BOTTOM of the mountain, not at the top.
Even then that wasn’t an actual account as these scenes not real footage and they were on the mountain …
Use your brain next time I know the internet makes it hard but you can do it
One thing about being in vast wilderness is people take for granted how easy it is to get disoriented and lose their bearings if there is no preparation involved. Stallone said in the making of Rambo that in that vast wilderness you can just drift off a few hundred yards and get lost forever. You have to stick to those trails and markers like glue, have a compass tell people where you are have water and a plan. Nature can devour you so easily!
Even if I had a compass, I wouldn't know how to use it 😂
Very true
My grandma taught me to always make arrows out of sticks pointing you back to the way out!! Even when I'm on a normal hike and feel a little unsure, I do this!
Well the old rule stay where you are would work normally but this company didn't give a shit where they was ha
@@user_abcxyzzlol u not the only one lol. But I also stay away from woods & wildlife lol
I am just now reading a book of historical fiction about the early American settlers in the mountains of Tennessee in the 1700's. The men are equipped at all times when they go into the forest to hunt or to travel - a rifle, maybe a hand gun too, some kind of dried food - like jerky or parched corn, a canteen, a large knife in a sheath around their waist, a hand ax tucked into their sash. And, if they're on horse back, a lot of other stuff. So they're all set right there to survive in the wilderness at any time. With their knives and hand ax they can make some kind of shelter of tree limbs, boughs, bark. They also carried fire making tools. They can hunt for game. It's incredible to think how easily these modern day people were thrust into a situation like the frontiers people but without any of the tools for survival.
Indigenous people have been doing it since time began and still do.
@@cookiesnmilk9200well not since time began but for a long time.

Geezzusss , So glad you two made it out alive ! I was in an unfamiliar area in the mountains of Newyork once. I was staying at the yoga ashram in Monroe , NY . I decided to take a short walk a little off trail one day and found that i had gotten a little turned around and lost the orientation of where i was . I will never forget the feeling of adrenaline rush in the first few minutes thinking i was lost . I cannot imagine what that feeling would have been like for 4 freaking days , OMG !!!!. Luckily iin my case , i just calmed myself and said , no way this is happening . I can't be that far off trail . So i scoped atround and found the familiar trail marks of what i had seen before that moment of thinking , " I'm lost" shook my entire being to my toe nails . So, i found my way back with a few sightings of trees that i had remembered . Always take mental notes while you hike of certain trees and trail features like inclines , boulders , downclines and such . Those notes could save your life . In closing , I think we should all send up a thankyou and much gratitude to John Donovan for the part he played in saving the lives of these two people even though it was by his own death . Rock on John , may you be praised in heaven forever !
They didn't get lost over a waterfall. They for sure are too embarrassed to say they went off the trail for some hanky panky.

If you're going to hike make sure you understand the area. There is so much food and water out there they could live forever. Pine needle tea has protien and has antibodies make a tea to keep you warm. Willow bark can be eaten, bugs, roots, wild lettace, etc find a dry safe spot make a signal fire and stay put help will come. Wondering around just gets you more lost. @@xMorbidArtx Sorry x poor way to get my point across. In their push to make everything about Identity Politics some videos change the lead characters sex, age and nationality in just about every scene. I have found this to be bewildering and quite frankly, ridiculous. Just found an outlet to express that, though perhaps poor choice.
The tour company was beyond negligent. The very least they could have done was check that these guys made it back to the hotel.
Also, it’s astonishing how many people assume everything will be fine if it’s only a supposed short trip. If you could see emergencies coming then there wouldn’t be any emergencies.

Gina's prayers were answered. I'm glad they survived, but my heart aches for Mr. Donovan, who would have died there alone. These two at least had each other. I can't imagine writing words saing goodbye to the world, because you knew you were going to die and there was nothing you could do about it. I hope Gina and Brandon finding his things and his body brought closure to his family.
The spirit of the veteran who passed on kept calling them. I mean they had so many options to get out of there or atleast get help before going further however it's like they went blank and were not thinking straight. ❤ They met for a purpose.
On the bright side, at least they found the waterfall lol
When people with no experience in the wild ,go into the mountains and say " we didn't have a care in the world " they're bound to end up in some kind of trouble. While you're at it make sure you leave your phone behind. I am from the country and I wouldn't dare venture into an unknown city alone and say I don't have a care in the world. That's begging for trouble
I was cheering for a Bear to eat them up,lol
I've lived in PS for a long time and hiked those mountains plenty of times. There are roads going in and out unlike the beginning says plus... where is that waterfall supposedly 150ft? That wasn't even from these mountains.

How walking further down a mountain can get you out if you started from a higher point? Glad they made it out.

So glad I'm English, most of us have in built common sense.
This is why simple survival skills come in handy. To some of us, this is a camping trip. lol. Learn to make a fire at minimum.
As a BSA leader for awhile .. having a whistle attached to my uniform shirt was common practice. Three blasts signal HELP. The sound goes a long ways. Obviously we all carried phones ... no telling when emergency services might be required... and for one leader who dropped from a heart attack while on an early AM walk ... it was needed. He survived ... the other leaders applied CPR until the ambulance crew got to them. ... If that spot on the mountain is so dangerous it would be nice to place some sort of stocked emergency shelter in there. [with emergency communications].
Didn't disappoint!! Had the token helicopter "miss"!! Also she kept saying "He came prepared and didn't make it out",she said like 3 times. Was she not paying attention? Gina prayed and I know God saved them. I am so very sad for John Joseph Donovan's loss of life. How awful to be stuck out there on your 60th birthday, May 11, 1945 - birthday, trapped out there on May 11, 2005 and lost his life on May 14, 2005. Absolutely heart wrenching! I found him on, Find-A-Grave, he looks like a very wonderful man! I wonder how he ended up in there and how long he was there. Very sad! To John's family, I am so sorry.
I’m sure John prayed too. And his friends and family. What an ignorant and self-righteous thing to say.
Texas, I think it said they were from. They should have followed their own tracks back as soon as they weren't absolutely sure of where they were. Glad they made it out ok.
How you not get married after that? Both dropped the ball! C'mon.
You would marry Brandon dumbass??? Smh
She's cute but pretty flaky and dramatic... I don't know how he even lasted 2 years 🙄
After she said on the 3rd day that they spent that night sleeping 12-15' apart, doing their own thing, "something to this day" she doesn't understand, I knew their relationship wouldn't last.
So, wasn't surprised the narrator at the end saying they stayed together for 2 more years following rescue... then separated.
What was surprising was not hearing the usual follow up, "but to this day remain good friends." That was sad, considering all they had weathered, survived, together.
If all they ended up having in common was a shared crisis, that's not much to base a long term relationship on. The novelty of surviving a situation like that together wears off and they probably realized eventually they didn't have much else in common.
Such a moving story!! Idk if her dad was gone.. it sounded like it.. but maybe her dad sent them to find the lost hiker's remains & in turn his matches were what saved them all.
An absolute blessing in disguise for John and the young couple. If not for Gina and Brandon, John's body never would have been found and given the burial he deserved. And if not for John, those 2 would not have been found and would have faced the same fate. Nothing short of a miracle here.
It's hardly a miracle. The poor guy probably starved for days and days and/or finally succumbed to hypothermia after night after freezing night. That was to be one of the most prolonged and excruciating ways to go. That guy had no miracles, so what makes them so special?
Thus is a crazy story and crazy episode ... You never know whi your lofe might affect . RIP john Donovan
Must have taken a taxi back? ... I wouldn't let those people in charge of me just walking to a corner store 😂😂... Imagine that was your kids school bus and she sees two kids not on the bus?... Shed say .. " okay must have been picked up by the parents" .😂

Another reason for me to stay in Texas...ole boy didnt wanna give up on them and as hard as he swallowed at being found...you can tell he was dam proud but humbled at the same time at finding ol boys remains
I would NOT recommend lighting a fire in a pine forest to anyone as a means to get rescued. Ok it might have got the attention they needed , but if the fire hadn't gone out and they already said they were totally stuck- they could have got caught in the wildfire and roasted alive. Besides the fact that arson is a serious crime.
Damn the ending to this had me in tears. Props to them

I live in Palm Springs and have been up to the tram several times. There are multiple signs urging tourists to stay on trail, they also reiterate this on the way up.
This is just stupidity. This mountain is brutal and hikers die on it all the time.
but they just went off the path a bit to see the waterfall.... "stupid" might be a bit harsh
@@soulsurfer639 any unplanned movement in the woods is stupidity, especially if you do not know the area and don't know about wilderness in general, then for sure, do not even step one foot off trail, even experienced navigators (I am one) could easily get lost if not diligent about navigation. The only way you would go off trail in their circumstances and it be a smart move, is if you found a path that was clearly marked in some way, all of the way down to the waterfall. Making note of land marks as you go, looking backwards, because it looks a lot diff looking back than the way you initially go. Follow some simple planning like this and you can explore all you want, however, I still would not do this without something like a garmin watch with sattelite gps.
