My wife and one of her girlfriends got lost in the Grand Canyon years ago. They had hiked a lot of miles together, prior, and her friend used to make jokes about my wife being overly prepared, whether it be a day hike, or a multi day backpacking excursion. Her over preparedness likely saved their lives in the grand canyon though.

Once you realize you’re lost. STOP!!!
Take account of how long you walked. Make some sort of mark that you can see easily. Then start to walk in a direction for the amount of time you walked. If you find nothing in that direction, go back to your mark. Then go in another direction.
Repeat until you find your way out.

One thing about being in vast wilderness is people take for granted how easy it is to get disoriented and lose their bearings if there is no preparation involved. Stallone said in the making of Rambo that in that vast wilderness you can just drift off a few hundred yards and get lost forever. You have to stick to those trails and markers like glue, have a compass tell people where you are have water and a plan. Nature can devour you so easily!

I am just now reading a book of historical fiction about the early American settlers in the mountains of Tennessee in the 1700's. The men are equipped at all times when they go into the forest to hunt or to travel - a rifle, maybe a hand gun too, some kind of dried food - like jerky or parched corn, a canteen, a large knife in a sheath around their waist, a hand ax tucked into their sash. And, if they're on horse back, a lot of other stuff. So they're all set right there to survive in the wilderness at any time. With their knives and hand ax they can make some kind of shelter of tree limbs, boughs, bark. They also carried fire making tools. They can hunt for game. It's incredible to think how easily these modern day people were thrust into a situation like the frontiers people but without any of the tools for survival.

Geezzusss , So glad you two made it out alive ! I was in an unfamiliar area in the mountains of Newyork once. I was staying at the yoga ashram in Monroe , NY . I decided to take a short walk a little off trail one day and found that i had gotten a little turned around and lost the orientation of where i was . I will never forget the feeling of adrenaline rush in the first few minutes thinking i was lost . I cannot imagine what that feeling would have been like for 4 freaking days , OMG !!!!. Luckily iin my case , i just calmed myself and said , no way this is happening . I can't be that far off trail . So i scoped atround and found the familiar trail marks of what i had seen before that moment of thinking , " I'm lost" shook my entire being to my toe nails . So, i found my way back with a few sightings of trees that i had remembered . Always take mental notes while you hike of certain trees and trail features like inclines , boulders , downclines and such . Those notes could save your life . In closing , I think we should all send up a thankyou and much gratitude to John Donovan for the part he played in saving the lives of these two people even though it was by his own death . Rock on John , may you be praised in heaven forever !

Excellent acting and you feel right there with them; every sorrow, every hope, every possibility. It leaves one shaken. Thank you for helping me to find this again. Obviously we all carried phones ... no telling when emergency services might be required... and for one leader who dropped from a heart attack while on an early AM walk ... it was needed. He survived ... the other leaders applied CPR until the ambulance crew got to them. ... If that spot on the mountain is so dangerous it would be nice to place some sort of stocked emergency shelter in there. [with emergency communications].

The only way you would go off trail in their circumstances and it be a smart move, is if you found a path that was clearly marked in some way, all of the way down to the waterfall. Making note of land marks as you go, looking backwards, because it looks a lot diff looking back than the way you initially go.
