Probably going to double back to some Lateralus era stuff next! Also, the intro song is our new single “Snowy Mountains” by LemonTech, which just dropped on streaming platforms today. Obviously a very different vibe from TOOL, but if you liked it you can find it on any streaming platform. See you at the next video!

Let us not forget Danny was 58 or 59 years old here too, absolute Master of his craft is an understatement! It's one thing to play it but he wrote it too. His limb independence, his ability to create melodies, just everything he does is crazy!

The depths of this man's humility knows know bounds, he's even taken time away to play in bands with kids covering Tools songs. You can find them on the Tube. Speaking of kids, you should totally check out the kids from the O'Keafe Foundation coving Tool's song 46&2, phenomenal 🤘 but anyway thank you for an amazing reaction.

This is my favorite Tool song as well. From the overall ambiance, to the message, to the beautiful complexity of the 33/8 section, and the brilliance of Danny's ostinato. It's a masterpiece, and I also quite enjoy that it confounds the closed-minded.

      @bigchunkybubbles 8 місяців тому +1

I’m a little late but this is very well said. It seems so complex and it is, but it also has a lot of the pattern of Maynard’s speech rhythms. It’s really just taking small groupings and repeating them unpredictably and then adding independence among the elements. Danny’s limb independence is unparalleled.

@@bigchunkybubbles I'm sorry I didn't see this comment at the time. Yeah, when I first started listening to it, the randomness was like tripping over a curb I hadn't noticed. Now when I listen to it, it doesn't even seem to be in an odd meter anymore. I can just feel exactly where it's going to go, and a lot of that is about Maynard's vocals.

What I love about Tool is that they put all of these effects and sounds that they are actually able to reproduce in concert, they just don't put them in there just to make their songs even more amazing and when the time comes to play live you will hear a song that differs from the studio version, that's why when you hear Tool' songs in the album, they are totally capable to reproduce it exactly as it is and if they get excited they can even play it better, and that's beautiful!

The best set up for any Tool reaction video is one person who knows the song and is a fan and one who doesn't know it so well because the giddy joy on the Tool fan's face and the nervous/excited looks over to see if the newbie is enjoying it as much as you want them to is so relatable

Keep in mind that Danny has been playing drums for over 50 years. No darn wonder he is good!! Take note of his hand speed as this video progresses. Other drummers are amazed with this video and they are pros! Not some want-a-bees...
My favorite part is coming up -- watch for the overhead light to begin to flash. When the lights do Danny breaks it OUT!!

Later I became friends with Maynard's Best Friend Tim Alexander Primus's first the drummer. And Perfect Circle and Pucsifer's drummer . Danny is actually a very nice guy. He is one of the Best. Yet, probably the Best Drummer who plays with the same creative as Danny but can add about twice the dynamic edge and feel. Terry Bozzio! He also owns the World The Largest Drum Set.

the "outro" part of Pneuma to me, as a drummer (as if that would mean anything when it's a Danny Carey video lol) is always special - there is some raw, frantic, brutal energy it; but: controlled. cool. precision work ... the whole song wants to grab you and jump on a rampage but yet, ufff - how he accents with the crash cymbals, the selective yet forcefull doublebass.
yea it is damn great work and Danny is a master.

So that whole drum solo-ish section was Swiss Triplets. His ability to play that for that long, staying in time with the click and the band, and keeping the time signatures clearly in his head while keeping his feet alternating.
Like, I’m pretty good at drums, or at least I was when I would practice for hours a day. It’s generally difficult to impress me with this particular instrument. But even something that “simple” as a Swiss triplet repeated is enough to tell me just how good he is. He wrote that in there knowing he could do it live every time. Wild.

"He's so good it makes me uncomfortable" The most accurate statement ever on Danny. Around like 12:45 you both start talking about Danny is the best drummer around, polyrhythm wise etc and time sig's, Terry Bozzio has 14 foot pedals and is the King of Limb Disassociation, now a step abouve Bozzio is Grant Collins from Aust, he has more foot pedals that Bozzio and is described in magazines as "sounding like a whole village of percussionists playin at once". Very primal and tribal. Trust me i know drummers of all genres. Danny is center stage live and the highlight upfront panned up the middle in mixes.

They shot for hours and hours and he said that he didn't learn the song. It's extremely complex, obviously, Danny is a legend, and for all we know, Danny has been working on this for 20 years and Portnoy had one day. Generally, this shows in much finer detail what Carey is doing. How big a part of Tool’s sound he is.
The quieter middle section is the one from this video that kills me. Each limb doing a different rhythm yet it doesn’t sound chaotic. Mind boggling.

Interesting Fact, Danny had played this live only a dozen or so times ever when this was filmed at the show in Boston in 2019.
So Danny's smile which I knew she would catch, was partly the difficulty with the limited times they had played it, and Vic Firth setting up cameras added a little a bit of extra juice like your most complicated song, and 1 take, and go.
This and and that old Sober video are the only 2 Professionally shot Tool Live videos in existence, although they have been recording their shows themselves since at least 2012 according to Adam, so one day, hopefully a long time from now when the live shows are no longer, hopefully they will release some DVDs.

The Mystic Octopus, The World's Greatest Drummer... His "FU$&#K YA, THAT WAS HARD, WE DID IT AGAIN!!!" smile is epic!!!! Inducted into the TOOL ARMY after seeing them in 1991 at a festival in Hawaii, my favorite band ever since, seen them multiple times over the years and they just keep getting better and better...4 geniuses, and not just musically... People who don't like or appreciate TOOL are of course entitled to thier WRONG opinion!!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Danny Carey and Tomas Haake of Meshuggah are next level. Tool is a religious experience and Meshuggah is a visceral one. Equally profound.

"At the end he's so stoked because he did it."
I've seen several comments say that the smile at the end is him laughing at a mistake he made. But I can't pick out the mistake.
There _is_ a video where he misses a beat on Vicarious, and throws the whole band off. It's pretty funny.

Just saw these dudes live and I was on mushrooms. I couldn’t help but think that Danny looked so small behind his drum set and I couldn’t shake the fact that he looked like he was running his ass off the entire time. Oh and Justin looked like the devil at one point. Anyway, if you ever see them live, psychedelics is the way to go.
