I think reps and reps regarding technique in how the Russians do it builds up your confidence and mental game. In America, I think we do focus on technique, but do lots and lots of “live” and tournaments unlike the Russians. It’s why in the west we say “it’s a majority of your mental.” I think there is a fine line of reps, live, and mental. In my opinion, mental is huge though from what I notice with youth wrestling. Some kids who get beat by the same kids, generally are beat before they step on the mat. Why? Because they don’t believe they can beat a kid they haven’t beaten who may be technically equal.

My son is 5 and just started wrestling. He’s one of the more timid kids and doesn’t give it his all in practice. Though, to be fair, there’s only been 2 practices and he doesn’t know what he’s doing yet. Should I be worried or should I just let him be timid as long as he’s having fun?

I would not worry but I would do practice only know meets and just keep him on the mat two times a week. There’s no need putting him out there until he is ready and I will wait to he is the upper age class of 6U practice only and then practice one time a week in the off-season at home this will give him three years of experience in no time and next year he will crush it. You could check out online Academy if you had interest. Www.Purlerwrestling.Com Master the basics program at home

Purler Wrestling thanks for your reply. He is on a local team and their first meet is 12/19. Are you saying we should skip the meets?

No Yb I wouldn’t throw him into the tournaments until he has shown confidence and that he’s relaxed and at ease and practice there is no rush but I would make sure he did a few tournaments just remember to him live wrestling at practice is like a tournament but the tournament has more chaotic event energy and adds another element that he may not be ready yet to deal with so I would play it week by week

Purler Wrestling thanks for your reply. We went to the meet last night and his first match he went against a kid who had a years experience on him. My son was dominated positionally but didn’t give up and I was very proud of him because of how out-gunned he was. The kid he wrestled cradled him, worked a half Nelson repeatedly and leg wizzered him the whole match. his second (and final) match he went against a kid more timid than him and my kid took him down six or seven times but didn’t attack once his opponent was on the ground. Honestly, I was more happy with the first match because he didn’t give up. There’s a tourney tomorrow we are going to and we will drill in the basement tonight for an hour or so and hopefully build his confidence.

It is 2024 now, 8 days into the new year. And I am grateful for these videos. Helping me to assist my little 5 year old in his 1st year of wrestling. His record is 2-3 so far. 1st year wrestling. Practice for roughly 4 weeks now. The practices are ok, coaches do there best. A lot of 5 year olds running around; with the attention span of zero 😂... Both matches my son won, he won by points. In the matches he lost. 1 match the opposing wrestler utilized a headlock and just would not let go. My son had no idea how to get out of course. But through all three 1 minute periods, he never quit. He was tearing afterwards and upset. As a father I did my best to not show any type of negativity. My son and I went to an area around the backend of bleacher where there was not a ton of eyes staring at him (which I believe was a major proponent in his sobbing). I gave him his time to vent and cry. He than agreed to do stance with me and we began doing our normal circle routine while in wrestling stance. I asked him if he felt OK, he than said he did not want to wrestle anymore. I asked him if he was willing to try his best and wrestle one more time. And he did. He agreed. Went out, got a little timid once near mat. But with a little reassurance from his coaches and I. He went right back out onto the mat and wrestled the next kid in his weight class. He won by 5 points.
In his next 2 matches the following day he lost both by pin. What my wife and I noticed was that he had gotten discouraged (it appears) with how long it took for him to wrestle. I as a father did not truly notice (machismo I guess) but my wife pointed it out. And when I looked at my son I can see that he was no longer drilling, but sitting down and from where I was sitting, appeared to be holding back tears. I went to him and did my best to encourage him. He assured me he was ok. He went out and got pinned. His match went well for the most part, however, he continually looked up for instructions from everyone yelling moves, etc. He than got caught while trying to escape from the bottom and got pinned. He was upset again and sobbing. I did the same protocol with him. This venue had a locker room, so I was able to take him in there and give him time to cry and vent. We than again got into our wrestling stance and began out circling routine. He told me he did not know what he did wrong. I than asked him if he was ready to try his best again. He said yes. I took him back out and he wrestled. He got pinned in this match too; same scenario. He was winning by points. Than due to continuing to put his head up (place himself in a prone position) the opponent caught him while my son was attempting to step up from down position. He was upset. But he did say he was willing to continue wrestling.
I am a father. I have wrestling experience. But far from anything truly successful. Wrestled D-3 and did ok. I have no idea how to truly help my son, as my wrestling style at HWT was completely based upon me outpacing my opponent (wesring them out) I had a great gas tank for a HWT apparently.. The truth of the matter is I still have no true idea on how to help my son. I apologize for the essay, however, I trust this will find the right person well. And good instructions or guidance can be availed.
These videos are awesome. Thank you for all you do. God bless! 🙏🏼
