This demonstration reveals so many of the masking tool features in the panel and how they can work together to achieve this complex edit!

Wonderful edit Dave. I offered up this image because it was so flat. I wanted to see how you would handle the large rock face center right. Most of the edits of this scene either blotch out the rock face, or over sharpen it. Having shot a few King Tides at this location, the blotching is a byproduct of heavy mist that occurs in the cove in the foreground, but not always. I was pleased to see that you managed it via D&B and far as I can tell you refrained from sharpening that area. Love how after the edits you produced a more natural rendition of this scene. Well done and yes on the edge mask tutorial.

Hi Dave: Wow what a wonderful image and great video. Thanks Ray for sharing. I am interested in seeing how to use the Edge Mask to remove Halos. As well, when you finished the edits did the size of file require that you had to change it to an Adobe PS Large Document file format or do you flatten all layers when you are done? More times than not, I find that my edits involve multiple layers that when saving I am force to convert to PS Large Document file format (.psb). Keep well. Cheers, Keith

Dave, this was a great video. I particularly liked the technique, new to me, of using the black fill to tighten up the linear gradient. And, that this tool exists for such easy use in the TK 8 panel is a testament to the talents and skills of Tony Kuyper. Together, the two of you are continuouslhowing me new techniques I can use in my editing. To both of you, thank you so much.
And as an aside, two weeks ago I was standing in exactly the same place at Shore Acres, Oregon where Ray was to take this photograph. Sadly, the waves weren’t nearly as big as the day Ray was there. Great shot!

Hi Dave, loved the tutorial but I think you may have uploaded the processed image or at least a part processed version as the sample for us because when I opened it in PS it had the first three colour grading layers and two curves layers.

Di Dave, thanks for the video. I have problem: try as I might I could not get the colour picker to pick the colour I wanted by sampling from the blank layer above the colour layer as you describe at 31:12. With my set up I have to do my sampling from the colour layer first then paint on the blank layer. Am I executing the process correctly?
Tony, click on your Eyedropper Tool found in your Tool Panel. Go to the Eyedropper Tool Menu found at the top of your Photoshop interface. You will find a drop down Menu for Sample. Make sure it is set to (All Layers). Now when you go back to your Brush Tool you should be able to sample color on Blank Pixel Layers.
