Dave, I picked up my iPad to search in your posts for examples of adding and intersecting selections and staring me in the face was Fridays’s video. Perfect explanation and clear working examples. I spent many years evaluating teachers as a principal and your skills are exemplary. Great job! Keep up the good work.
Happiness is TK Friday. Your examples are easy to follow. And very instructional. For your earlier tutorials I have been experimenting with mask calculations. This tutorial helps me understand Mask Calculations to the next level. Thanks Dave!
I have been using the TK pannel for many years, but I never really understood the mask calculator, thank you Dave for this tutorial,it has really helped me to understand the mask calculator better 👍🙏
Sensational, Mr. Kelly. I'm quite sure I'll be back to this video to sediment the ideas you presented. Thanks so much. Your channel is like a treasure! Best regards from Rio de Janeiro/Brazil.
This video gave me one of those Ah Ha! moments. Something I have been trying to figure out how to do recently and you explain it so eloquently. Thank you.
Great work Dave…. Love the use of lights 1 & 3 masks to control sun glare whilst adjusting the sky. Just fabulous! Similar with your last image too. Adjusting darks in sky & other parts of the Image really keeps balance….. Thank you.
Thanks a lot Dave for doing these videos...with each video you help demystify the workings of the TK system and provide a gateway to curiosity in seeing what can be done with our images.
Hello Dave, thank you for another excellent tutorial. Your demonstration was well planned and perfectly executed. Your enthusiasm is contagious and much appreciated. After all, photography is a hobby for many of us and it should be fun! Take care.
The Mask Calculator is without a doubt one of the most powerful tools in TK8. Takes some getting used to it with its complexities but well worth the effort to learn. Well presented.
Thanks Dave. That was a very good explanation of the calculator. I have been using it on almost every image over the last month. As you have stated more than once, I set myself up for success by saving my selections in my channels up front. Your tutorials have moved my image editing to the next level.
Great video Dave. I can tell you spent a bit of time preparing so this concept is better understood. Thanks for your time and efforts to make us better at these complex tasks in TK 8.
Beutiful place, great picture with The stone in The foreground and The v shaped mountains 👍🏻The other photos where also Nice, but that picture was great!
Hi, Dave. Great video. The algorithm has not been friendly to you. This is the first of your videos it has recommended to me in months -- even though I am subscribed to your channel.

I I Look forward to TK Fridays every week. I learn so much and appreciate your taking the time to explain all the buttons you are pushing and why. Keep up the great work!
Wow! Thank you Dave. When I started with TK8 it didn't take me long to realize what a powerful tool the Multi-Mask module is in creating top-notch edits. I've made it my mission to try and understand all it's tools and concepts and use it in my editing as much as possible. Your TK8 Friday tutorials are the sole reason it's all getting through my thick skull and making total sense. I sure look forward to and enjoy your weekly offering immensely. By the way, I wouldn't complain if an additional TK8 day was added to your repertoire.😁 Cheers.
Wow, Dave! That was a really good explanation of what the Mask Calculator can do. I'm happy to see that TK8 can keep up with you. You always give it a good workout.
Thanks again Dave! This one dissipated once and for all my doubts on how to use the calculator tool. It was an outstanding tutorial. Sometimes I hesitate to push a button in the calculator tool, thinking that I might ruin something. But after this, I realize that the TK8 panel stimulates experimentation, and it seems to be extremely straight forward in the implementation. Such a great tutorial.
Thank you very much for explaining how the mask calculator and the brightness and zone masks work. Too much knowledge always helps, not kills. A good photographer should learn and develop all the time. Best regards from the city of "Fortress Przemyśl" in Poland. sorry but i use google translator because i don't know english.
Hi Dave: Thanks so much for creating and sharing this video. Prior to viewing this material, I wasn't as comfortable with how to use the Mask Calculator tool as I wanted it to be. Your progressive approach in developing knowledge about this tool was perfect. I also liked the progression of images to demonstrate the use of this tool. Well done! Cheers, Keith
Thank you Keith. I have been wanting to do this video for awhile now. I new it would be challenging but it was worth it. TK Friday is my favorite day of the week and it is a privilege and an honor to make and share these tutorials.
Hi Dave, I decided to watch this excellent video again and use the instructions contained within and apply them in the TK9 Panel. I seem to be having difficulty in getting things to work properly from around 4.38when executing the instructions to make the three selections (Darks6,Lights6 and Midtones). I am probably not following correctly but just wanted to check if these instructions apply to TK9 in the same way. Thanks, Martin
Dave, these TK8 tutorials are freakin amazing, this one really helps out a lot. Would you be able to to do a still life start to finish edit in the future? food photography or similar?
Thank you more like this, please. Is there an index to your TK videos to help me find topics and practice when I have an image to edit with a specific issue?
Dave, I LOVE your videos but the first half of this one was a bit confusing with the dots and grayscale stuff. Glad to see you had real life examples in the second half. Thanks for all the fabulous content.
Dave to eliminate the banding in your sample gradient with latest update to PS go to > preferences then > technologies preferences then check > precise previews for 16 bit documents, then restart PS. The reason you see banding without changing technologies preferences is because adobe engineers have your layers in a temporary 8 bit mode to move along faster using layers. If you were to flatten all those temporary 8 bit layers, you would then have a 16bit file and see no banding.
👍👍 Excellant tutorial. Use of gradient first and pictures next was great idea. The use of the gradient helped focus on the task at hand without the distraction of a picture, then when pictures were used it was easier to follow. This tutorial was what I asked for, so now I'll have to think of something else that's maybe difficult to follow on TK8 lol 😁
I have enjoyed seeing your videos on TK8. They have been most helpful. I have just gotten myself into astro photography and frankly am a complete amateur at it, but it sure seems to me that TK8 could be used in any number of situations with the post processing of astro photography. If you are up to a challenge, you might want to find an astro photographer who has some photos to work with and do a video on that. They are going to be dealing with hue, saturation, exposure, etc. Seems to my simpleton mind that this is the type of stuff that TK8 might work with. There is nothing simple about astro photography photo processing. Anyway, just an idea for a challenge for you.
Dave: I can follow along wonderfully with your videos; excellent presentations. However here is a video I wish you would make = what about mistakes and how to back track; especially if undo not available. For example do a TK8 mask either partway and go back (using undo or back out thru TK8) to start again. And do a TK8 mask applied with color adjust...do other stuff. Try to delete/undo as if to start a new mask to replace old etc. What seems to happen to me is TK8 and Ps layers get confused/lost and undo or delete does not work and I start over on a clean file. Doug.S
If you click the wrong operator (+, -, or x), you can just click the correct one and continue with your calculation. No need to undo anything. In fact, you can wait to choose your operator until right before you click the = button. So, choosing the wrong operator shouldn't be an issue. Just choose another one and continue. Choosing the wrong second mask is also not a problem. Just "X" out of the wrong one using the X button in the upper right of the mask-making interface to get back to the main interface and then go back to making the right mask. The calculator stays active and just waits until you find the right mask and click the = button to finish the calculation. If you make the wrong first mask then you should "X" out of the calculator entirely and start over. Once you click the calculator button, you are committed to using the mask that was present on-screen at the time you clicked it. So, if that first mask is the wrong one, you can't undo. You need to restart your calculation with a fresh mask.
Dave: Another great lesson. I hope you can help me out with a solution. I have an image where I want to superimpose a vertical gradient of white to black on a luminosity mask and paint through the selection so that the effect is maximum at the bottom and gradually vanishes at the top. For example the luminosity mask selects a bunch of bright birds in a pale background. I have inverted the mask so now the birds are black and the background is white. I want to darken the background from bottom to top gradually. How best can I do it? One not so clever way is to burn through the mask with different opacities and fill for the brush while burning starting with a higher value at the bottom and working my way to the top with a lower value in steps. Crude but works - I am sure you can tell me how to use a gradient to achieve this in a much cleverer way. Thanks in advance.
I’m not sure what you are trying to do. If you are trying to darken the image thru a gradient you could add a Color Grading tool to a layer and darken it to taste. Then use Photoshop’s Gradient tool and apply a gradient to the Color Grading tool’s layer mask. Then put that layer in a group with a black mask. Load your selection and paint through the selection onto the black group mask. This may have nothing to do with what you are trying to do but it is just a guess.
Thanks Dave, I found the follow along images great to give me more confidence in using the mask calculator, what a great tool. How would you recommend its use to provide assisted dodging and burning? I expect you have videos on this
Hello Dave! It's me again...I believe that finally I must have a bug or something! When trying to follow along I realize that I have to click the = button on the calculator twice to take effect! The first time it does nothing and shows the psd unchanged and with the 2nd click I get the right result! Do you think that I must uninstall TK and re-install it!? Is there any procedure for uninstalling it!? Thanks a lot againt! Ioannis
Hi Dave! Tony wrote me a email and advising me to reset my preferences in Photoshop! After this ALL works fine again! Thank you all for your tutorials and support!!!!
Sorry Lakis. It is such a great tool and I pretty much use it in all of my TK Friday Tutorials. Maybe watch some of the full edit tutorials and it might start to make sense.
@@LLCinema22 The X is for intersect. For instance, you can have Photoshop select the Subject. Now you want to fill that Subject with, let’s say a Lights 1 Luminosity Mask. You could Select the Subject and Intersect it with a Lights 1 Luminosity Mask. Download my PDF notes on my Full Edit Tutorials and they will show you exactly what to do.
@@thejoyofeditingwithdavekelly excuse my ignorance dear Dave does by any chance means applying eg lights 1 or a zone mask to that selection when u use the word intercept?

What is that bottom button in the vertical row that you used to send it to a color grading tool with the palm tree/pink sky photo?
Thanks Dave, I found the follow along images great to give me more confidence in using the mask calculator, what a great tool. How would you recommend its use to provide assisted dodging and burning? I expect you have videos on this
You are welcome Peter. I don't use it as much for dodging and burning but let think about that.
Sir is there option for batch process in topaz simplify or topaz studio...please reply
I don’t believe there is.
I am so sorry but I have no clue what are you talking about. Watched all Yr videos about this stupid calculator but still nothing. Pity!
Sorry Lakis. It is such a great tool and I pretty much use it in all of my TK Friday Tutorials. Maybe watch some of the full edit tutorials and it might start to make sense.
@@thejoyofeditingwithdavekelly I am OK with plus, minus, equal but I just don't understand what you mean with ×
@@LLCinema22 The X is for intersect.
@@LLCinema22 That is correct. I find Intersection to be one of the main reasons I use Intersection for.
Thanks!
