Dave like alwasys a very educational video. I would like to see a video on the hidden features of TK8. Please do one in the very near future. Thank you for all your hard work to make TK8 easy to learn and apply to my photos. You are the best
Hi Dave, I haven't updated it as of yet but I will right now. Thank you so much for your very prompt reply. Your dedication to sharing your knowledge to help us improve our editing skills is greatly appreciated.
Dave, there is no way on God's green earth I would get to grips with TK8 without your amazing videos, so that's much appreciated. I'm working my way through your immense back catalogue and can't believe it's all free. You're a digital Bob Ross 🙂. Unfortunately last weeks video has got me hooked on Midjourney so I'm being stretched thin here, time wise. Hidden features, yes definitely. Keep them coming.
Hidden features?. Very interested 👍. Another terrific lesson. You have resumed the most used techniques in photoshop for dodging and burning. Serve yourself !!!😊 Thanks Dave
This was a treat, Dave! This was the most comprehensive tutorial on Dodging & Burning I've seen so far. As for the "Hidden Features" video: A definitive YES!
Hey Dave, another fantastic video. Every Friday I learn more about the TK8 panel and consequently, my appreciation for it grows as well. Oh ya, why would anyone not want to see hidden features in the TK8 panel. Looking forward to watching it!
I work mostly in Black and White, so this tutorial is extremely valuable to me. Thanks for sharing so many and varied techniques for Dodging and Burning. I definitely would like you to do a tutorial on Hedden Features! Thanks for your hard work.
Dave, this is one of your best tutorials! I found it extremely useful, especially for my landscape photos. Now I'm looking forward to your hidden features tutorial.
Nice work Dave… Love the use of the CGT to dodge & burn. I also use the curve darker/lighter/linear or contrast mode painted through a mask. Decent results too. Yes please to the hidden features… There’s always something new🙋🏼♂️
This video put it all together. I like this "one topic" video for a change, Much easier to reference. Would be all in on a future "Hidden Features". I wish some of the other tutorials that I watch from time to time would have the wonderful teaching skills that you possess.
I love all your TK8 Fridays and rest of your instructions. I know you present different ways of doing the same thing. I htink it would be helpful at the end of those insturctions if you would say which way you prefer to do specific process and why. Then I think a person wil be able to find the one that works for them knowing what you prefer which might be the same of different. Thanks for all your instruction. You have made me a better photographer and post processor.
Hi Dave: This video is brilliant. As you may know, I reached out to Tony & Sean recently with some questions around dodging / burning and they provided a very detailed response. However, this video provides a much more impact-full explanation of these tools and the practical demonstration of the tools was well received. I also really appreciated the 'Hidden Tips' segment of this video so I would really appreciate seeing more of the 'Hidden Tips'. Thanks again for all of your hard work. Keep well!
This tutorial is special,I didn't realise we could dodge and burn in so many ways using the TK 8 panel. This is going to be really useful, thanks a lot Dave 🙏
This tutorial was full of great information. Thanks for taking the time out to make this video. It was longer but well worth the investment of time for me. I would love to learn more about the hidden features of TK8.
I'd definitely like to see more hidden features in the TK panels. Right now my favorite is burning and dodging through a selection, but the contrast method intrigues me. I'll give it a try. Thanks again Dave for another killer tutorial.
Mr. Kelly, Thank you for reviewing dodging and burning with tk8. I have been building a reference guide for personal use, combining similar techniques from your videos. Today's video PDF has been placed in this notebook in total. I would also be interested to see the hidden spots in photoshop. You're fantastic. Gary
There is a "ton" of excellent videos on You Tube about dodging and burning in Photoshop. This one in my view is head and shoulder above all of them, largely thanks to TK8 Plugin's impressive features so ably explained and demonstrated by Dave Kelly.
I love the experimentation and approaches to dodge and burn. My latest experimentation on conifer trees. Using the TK panel I break up the trees into 2 selections. say a zone 3 and a zone 4 luminosity masks. I tighten them up so blending is restricted. The zone 3 burn is done with a dark brush that include jhitter and texture. The zone 4 mask for dodging is done with a texture brush as well. Keep the hits coming!
You packed so many awesome tips in an easy to understand tutorial. As I am watching, I am planning on how to use many of these tips in my post processing. I especially liked outputting to a selection which is sort of like putting training wheels on the brush. As for a Hidden Feature tutorial-I vote YES. Please do a hidden features tutorial Thanks Dave!!!
Hello Dave, thank you for yet another excellent tutorial. For me, the key learning was using the TK contrast action not only to add contrast but also to dodge and burn using different brushes.
Nice video - its helpful and I printed the PDF file. I love dodging and burning, what I normaly make at the very end of my work. Sure that I wanna here more abou the "hidden features" in Photoshop.
Hi Dave, You asked for any other methods for D&B so wanted to share my technique. If doing freehand D&B, I created an action to create a 50% grey layer, change the blend mode to Linear Light, reduce fill to 15%, then use Photoshops D&B tool. In this way I can use the burn tool to burn darker areas and if I want to dodge lighter areas I only have to hold down the Alt key and it switches the tool over and release to go back. I can use the fill to adjust the strength. An added benefit is there is no color shift using this method as there is with soft light. Hope this makes sense. Hidden features would be great!
Very nice Dave - I always forget about the Grey Brush and it's a good tool to smooth out transitions ~ thanks for the reminder. Another method I like to use for (Dodge and Burning) D&B is to paint with color either freehand or using a Luminosity Mask, and use/pick a color that for the area that I am dodging and burning. This way the tones (at times) appear to blend smoother versus just D&B with black and white. Dave we have talked about this before, but at times I prefer to use the Brush's flow versus Opacity this way I don't have to lift my brush up and it also (at times) allows for making smoother transitions. I would love to see a hidden feature video. Dave I'll be gone for a few weeks on a workshop and trip to the Southwest so I'll catch up on TK Friday's when we get back. Thank you Dave~
Thanks. "Great point, Mario. Keeping the flow low (around 20% or less) allows for better control of the brush, as lifting isn't necessary. I appreciate both methods and may create a video showcasing both techniques."
Thanks Mario. You are right about the flow not having to lift the brush which is a great technique. You can get a good amount of control if you keep the flow very low, say 20% or under. I am thinking about doing a video demonstrating the two techniques. I actually like both techniques.
Dave, I've been quietly watching your TK8 videos for about a month now and they are just great! Thank you so much for your work and the PDF files which I keep handy for reference. I would add my voice to the others asking for a hidden features video. Also, can you explain in your inimitable easy style what the Fill option on layer does especially in relation to landscape photography images? Thank you!

Good Morning, I started using the dodging and burning technique, but it does remind me of using a curve. I hope its not the same. Curves can end up distorting the image if they are used too much. But, I can tell.
Great tutorial Dave. On the last method that you demonstrated, where you create a luminosity mask attached to a 50% gray layer to dodge or burn, would it be possible to place the luminosity mask directly on the 50% gray layer and how would you do it? Would that make sense? You could still fine tune the effect with the opacity of the layer. Thanks.
Hi Dave. Another great tutorial. Question for you. I didn’t go through all 107 comments, so I apologize if this question has been covered in one of the previous posts. But I am not completely grounded on the benefit of painting through a mask as opposed to painting through a selection. Intuitively, i’m sure that there is a time and place for each. Both methods yield similar outcomes, with selections resulting in slightly smaller file sizes. Both options work well, but using selections in painting also results in fewer layers.
Hi Dave, thanks as always for the great videos you post. They're a joy to learn from. When I tried to use the color gradient as you explained in this video, I got this error message that says " the active layer is not an appropriate "Color Gradient" Curves adjustment layer. I am pretty sure I followed your instructions but haven't been able to proceed any further because of this error message. Would so appreciate any enlightening you can do. Thank you in advance for your time.
Hi, I was late to watch this awesome video. Loved the concept of Paint Contrast. It's too handy when you are doing some creative adjustments. What will happen if we use a colour brush which is placed just beside the grey brush?
You can use the color brush and it pays to experiment because you can get some very interesting results. I like to play with changing color hues, keeping the color the same but increasing or decreasing the saturation and also playing with the luminosity values, along with increases and decreasing the saturation of the color. Also, play with changing the brush opacity for different effects.
Always great stuff, Dave! Another masterclass. I noticed that my Photoshop action to jump over to Topaz Photo AI no longer works. TPAI opens with the "final processing" popup active, then exits back to Photoshop. Are you seeing that behavior, too? Going to Filter - Topaz Labs - Photo AI works correctly, but not as an action.
Yes you can Jose. You can't have any delay when you type. Type 32 in a quick manner and the brush will change to 32% opacity or whatever combination you choose. If you type 3 and have a delay before typing 2. Your opacity will change to 30% and then to 20%,
Morning Dave, great video. Would be interested in a video on the hidden features. BTW, I just sent you and email with a tip, let me know if you find it useful.

Very nice Dave - I always forget about the Grey Brush and it's a good tool to smooth out transitions ~ thanks for the reminder. Very good Dave. Lights TP and Darks TP also add adjustable global contrast. A video on hidden features would be very useful.
Hello Dave, very cool!Thank you
Dave, I've been quietly watching your TK8 videos for about a month now and they are just great! Thank you so much for your work and the PDF files which I keep handy for reference. I would add my voice to the others asking for a hidden features video. Also, can you explain in your inimitable easy style what the Fill option on layer does especially in relation to landscape photography images? Thank you!
Thank you. I wil work on a video explaining fill.
Hi Dave, thank you for another great video. The pdf is so helpful as a reference. I always print them as a quick reference while editing. I wish you health and happiness this new year and I'm sure I'm not alone in thanking you for your excellent work. super demo , un grand merci dave
this was exactly what I needed!
Good Morning, I started using the dodging and burning technique, but it does remind me of using a curve. I hope its not the same. Curves can end up distorting the image if they are used too much. But, I can tell.
Very usefull tutorial... Thank's!!!

Great techniques !
Thanks a lot !
Interested in hidden features if you can show when they would be helpful. There are lots of hidden features that I don’t see a need for. Thanks!
Need the video on hidden features!! Please!
Thanks.
Excellent!!
I am just not sure of when.
Painting thru a selection gives you the ability to slowly build up the effect and gives you more control.
Hi Dave,
At the 5:30 point in the video, you describe a method for selectively burning by essentially using the masking the mask technique. However, at the 10:30 point, you describe a method for similarly selectively burning by outputing to a selection. Since the results seem to be the same, is there a good reason for using one method vs. the other, or is it just personal preference?
P.S. Yes to Hidden Features video!
Do you update your TK8 MultiMask Panel to the New TK8 MultiMask Beta? I talk about this on my latest TK Friday video. It's a free update.
Also, play with changing the brush opacity for different effects.

Do you by any chance have a video on doing a selection using TK8 and then blurring a background or foreground, etc.?

I would love one of you do it.
Another great video. Would everything used today work with black and white image? Thanks
Thanks Jorge and yes it will work for black and white images.
@@thejoyofeditingwithdavekelly
One question, Dave. Is it possible to increase the brush opacity in increments higher that 10-20-30-40... I mean 11-24-34 etc?
Yes you can Jose. You can't have any delay when you type. Type 32 in a quick manner and the brush will change to 32% opacity or whatever combination you choose. If you type 3 and have a delay before typing 2. Your opacity will change to 30% and then to 20%,
