I returned to this reaction - the second one this evening - and I noticed something weird. There is no way I wouldn't have given this a like, as seems also be the case with your first encounter with Floor being "Ghost love Score" which didn't seem to have a like from me either.
Are likes disappearing after some time? In any case you received likes again on this and the other video, even though I'm convinced I gave them likes the first times I saw these reactions. Although I'm not quite familiar with the earnings model YT has agreed with creators like you, but I think the amount of likes is part of that; if in time likes are made to "disappear" it may reduce the earnings which I find - if true - a bit disturbing.

Ad astra comes from the latin phrase "Per aspera ad astra" which means "through hardships to the stars". At NASA it is our motto. And I think we just found our theme song.

    • @papparocket
      @papparocket 3 роки тому +71

@@linabasilisk1955 I think we are both correct.
"ardua" is the latin root of the English word "arduous", but is also captured by the English words "difficult" and "struggle"
Per ardua ad astra could then be translated as "through struggle/difficulty/adversity to the stars". It is the official motto of the RAF and Air Forces of countries in the British Commonwealth, interestingly save the South African Air Force, which adopted "per aspera ad astra" as their motto.
A literal translation of aspera is "rough" but seems to find better meaning in English word "hardships" So "per aspera ad astra" would translate as "through hardships to the stars".
Given the deaths of NASA astronauts in the Apollo 1 fire and Columbia and Challenger disasters, I think "per aspera ad astra" might be a better motto for NASA. Many of us in the Agency just use 'ad astra" as a closing salutation in our emails. I knew there was more than just that, but hadn't pursued it further. So thank you for prompting me to dig deeper into the topic.
Oh, and while the RAF and other Air Forces use "per ardua ad astra" as a motto, I think a better motto for organizations like Air Forces that fly machines to reach great heights but not so high as to reach the "stars" a better motto might be "per ardua ad alta".
      ad astra,

IMHO the Nightwish cruise live version of that song is better. People usually recommend the Wembley version because it has livelier atmosphere and Floor is more audible but the reason Floor is more audible is because Marco has been mic'ed down. I like Floor & Marco harmonizing when they have the same mic settings - they just blend together perfectly. I am not a big fan of the EQ settings on Floor's vocal track in any of the Wembley songs either. Whoever was the sound engineer that day made Floor sound slightly boomy and muddy. Compare that to her vocal track in Wacken 2013 the difference is night and day !

I apologize in advance if my english is not perfect, not my mother language (I'm Italian), but I want to add something about the ashes being sent to the Moon.
The thing is that Eugene spent a lot of his career studying the moon and its craters (to better understand the impact craters on earth), at the point that he wished one day he could go up there and study them on the spot. Then the possibility of taking astronauts to the moon became reasonable, and Shoemaker applied immediately to be an astronaut and be part of the program, but he was later declined due to his health conditions: he had addison's disease (which affects adrenal glands and some hormones production).
Quoting him directly "Not going to the moon and banging on it with my own hammer has been the biggest disappointment in life".
Listening to this song strikes me very hard, as I'm a Physicist with an extreme love for my subject, and I feel I can understand what he felt was taken away from him.
He was a geologist, and all he wanted to do was to go up there and replicate the same movements and activities typical of his field of studies on the moon's surface.
Knowing that he died without ever making it to the moon, one of his student, managed to put some of his ashes into a NASA probe which would "crash" into the moon (like a meteor that creates a crater, ironic detail), along with a photo of the Beringer crater (the one he was famous for) and the quote from Romeo and Juliet that is at the end of the song...
...making him the ONLY man buried on the Moon.
    Now, the quote
    "And when he shall die
Take him and cut him out in little stars
And he will make the face of heaven so fine
That all the world will be in love with the night
And pay no worship to the garish sun"
assume a new, beautiful meaning in my perspective

Floor told in one of her YT videos that the operatic vocals part took her some time to get just right as she is a perfectionist. They had already recorded the vocals for the song & were pretty happy with them, but Floor decided to give it one more go. So she took an audio track with also the choir in it, as previously she had sung her part without hearing the choir, and used it at her home studio for recording her vocals once more & was finally completely satisfied with them.
P.S. Because the Moon is tidally locked with the Earth, one side of the Moon always faces toward Earth. Interpretation of this fact would lead one to believe that the Earth's position is fixed on the lunar sky and no earthrises can occur; However, the Moon librates slightly, which causes the Earth to draw a Lissajous figure on the sky. This figure fits inside a rectangle 15°48' wide and 13°20' high (in angular dimensions), while the angular diameter of the Earth as seen from Moon is only about 2°. This means that earthrises are visible near the edge of the Earth-observable surface of the Moon (about 20% of the surface). Since a full libration cycle takes about 27 days, earthrises are very slow, and it takes about 48 hours for Earth to clear its diameter.

That last visual from the perspective of Eugene's crater and burial site on the moon, watching the Earth set and then the Sun set over the horizon of the Moon is epic. A little fact. Floor told us in an interview that the last part - the recorded it several times before Tuomas were satisfied. Then they all went home - but Floor didn't have the right feeling at the end, she couldn't feel it deeply enough - so she listened and rehearsed further and then recorded it in her home studio - and nailed id. The feeling was there. She sent it to Tuomas, this is the ending you hear on the album. Floor is such a perfectionist and a voicenerd - and this is why this song goes right into our soul and heart. Floor had done her magic once again - you can actually feel her emotions in that ending.
Incredible - but Floor in a nutshell - pure perfection, and the song has a soul. 🤘 🤘 🤘

Major goosebumps all the way up my spine to the base of my skull - not just my forearms or something. Absolutely incredible. Some kind of "the note" or harmonic that really hits me just right. "Laudato si ad astra": All praise belongs to the stars.
As Carl Sagan once famously said, "We are star-stuff that has taken destiny into its own hands". Every atom in your body (and everything else in the entire universe) came into being either in the death throes of stars that went supernova, or from the Big Bang itself. Laudato si ad astra, indeed. Tuomas knew what he was doing when he wrote that lyric. And Eugene Shoemaker was undoubtedly also aware, and in awe of, this fact as well.

Other great songs: Othan, or Hamrer Hyppier (all from the same live called Lifa).
    Love, Jo.

Yes, I second your reminder. I love Maria's voice and the primal sound of their music.

I'm joining anyone making the case for some Nordic style music, but I have to mention Einar Selvik from Wardruna once again. Wardruna made large parts of the soundtrack for the show Vikings. For Einar solo, I recommend him performing Volüspa live with only an ancient viking Harp and a little bit of classic orchestra ua-cam.com/video/k43yzC-dUqU/v-deo.html, Wardrunas latest song "Healing Mountain ua-cam.com/video/VEizKmZlUAw/v-deo.html, or Wardruna performing Helvegen live with Aurora (singing in Old Norse !) ua-cam.com/video/FnkTuHP9q3o/v-deo.html

      Uhmmm, yes.
You'll notice that the same kind of people who listen to Nightwish and The HU, often also listen to Heilung.
I attended Lifa live at Castlefest 2017, and I was enchanted. I have no other way to describe it.
Heilung was recommended by Kati Rán, Dutch nyckelharpa player (I also play nyckelharpa and that's a small community), who performed just before Heilung at Castlefest, at a different stage on the other side of the terrain, and she was going to watch Heilung from backstage so she had to rush and couldn't sign her merch. :D
Anyway, after you've done Heilung, do Kati Rán - Suurin, where the people of Heilung are guest musicians.

Thank you, Elizabeth, for recognizing the work of Tuomas Holopainen as well as the other members of this amazing band of minstrels. Most people get carried away by the obviously exceptional talent of Floor Jansen, and often forget the work of the rest of the band.
A wonderfully thorough and insightful job with this song, of course. Thank you. Peace, love and light from Downunder.

Great analysis; I absolutely loved it. I recently watched a video of her performing this song live and the control she has when singing the Latin section is just soooo amazing.

You have my favourite reaction videos. You point out things that I didn't notice even though I've already listened to the song 100 times, and it makes me love the song even more.

Your song reviews have become my favorite channel on UA-cam. You are obviously madly and deeply in love with music and everything involved with it. Your facial expressions while listening to a song are like watching a child open Christmas presents. I love to hear you talk about time changes and how they impact the songs. Your knowledge of music inspires me!!!
