You didn't quite get the Latin bits at the end right. The "Laudato Si" and "Ad Astra" bits at the end meant respectively "Praise be" and "To the stars". But there's a little more to it than just that. "Laudato Si" is a phrase taken from St. Francis of Assissi's famous song "The Canticle of the Sun", in which he praises the air, water, fire, sun, planets, animals, etc. as being our brothers and sisters. Death as well. And the most notable line regarding this song was: "Laudato si, mi Signore, per sora Luna e le stelle: in celu l'ài formate clarite et pretiose et belle." which means: "Praised be You, my Lord, through Sister Moon and the stars, in heaven you formed them clear and precious and beautiful." The term "Ad astra" is used in a variety of places in ancient Latin writings as well as in some modern contexts. Beyond its literal meaning, it implies the accomplishment of something that is practically impossible or very difficult. The first known usage is from Virgil in The Aneid, where he wrote "sic itur ad astra" or "thus one journeys to the stars" with the idea that it is how one accomplishes the impossible, and "opta ardua pennis astra sequi" or "desire to pursue the high (or hard to reach) stars on wings" when Aeneas taunts Turnus in combat. Another origin is Seneca the Younger, who wrote "non est ad astra mollis e terris via" or "there is no easy way from the earth to the stars". After the disaster of Apollo 1 in which three astronauts were killed in a flash fire that destroyed their capsule on the launching pad, a memorial was erected with the phrase "ad astra per aspera" which means "to the stars through hardships".

The phrase "Eternal Earthrise" is significant because the view from the part of the moon where Shoemaker's ashes reside has the Earth rising on the horizon, but due to the fact moon is in tidal lock with the Earth the view never changes. Forever the Earth appears to be rising. Think if the Earth wasn't spinning in relation to the sun. At certain places the sun would alwasy look as if it were rising other places it would look like it is always setting, but like being stopped in time the sun just sits in that one spot. So too parts of the moon would have an eternal Earthrise.
Roy Kliffen True on Earth but they do call it capsule in Shoemaker’s case (just checked). I suppose because it’s not your typical container as it needs to be attached to a rocket stage or payload. www.atlasobscura.com/articles/eugene-shoemaker-buried-moon-celestis-nasa

Okay, I have to be perfectly honest here. I am a huge Nightwish Fan since 1998 and I am always a little sceptical when someone is listening to Nighwish for the very first time (as a european it's hard to understand, that anyone from the rock/metal genre doesn't know Nightwish.) Usually I see a lot of people on youtube, just acting because they figured, Nightwish guarantees a ton of likes. But in your case, it doesn't even matter. I really don't care if it is really your first time listening or if it is just for the likes, because your analysis is always on point and that alone deserves a subscribtion. I also really appreciate the fact, that you don't just listen to it because of Floor. Yes Floor is amazing and she is the best thing ever happened to Nightwish. But the entire band is so talented, not even to mention the genius named Tuomas. You are one of the few reactors that really notices the art behind their music and the amazing talent behind it. Heads up and pause as much as you want, as long it is for a good reason.
We stood in the perfect place. They had this movie in the background. When Floor started to sing Laudato si ad astra, there was a sunrise just behind her, and it was so powerful. That was my greatest religious experience ever. This album feels like a psalms for nature and our place in it.
@@ChaseCarneson Tuomas's wife Johanna Kurkela spoke the Shakespeare quote. This album is a real family affair. If you listened to the album by Auri (Tuomas, Troy and Johanna) there were definite hints as to where HUMAN :||: NATURE would go, musically and lyrically.
@@AleksandarGospic Oooh yes. Also, curious about his first reaction when he hears the vocals in Harvest. But Pan and Endlessness, those are my two personal favorites
Repeating what I wrote in the live comments; regarding Troy's vocals, if you get around to "How's the Heart?", would you *please* include the acoustic version and do a "double-header" reaction if you will? Pretty please, with a cherry on top? :-)
Chase after this video I went back and watched all your Nightwish reactions again. I love your knowledge and your humble nature and the respect you show your fans/viewers as well as the bands being reviewed. No one else in the reaction community is doing what your doing. I only learned of Nightwish shortly before you did them, but have become a huge fan and enjoyed the journey that your on. Been subbed since GLS reaction and can't wait to see the rest of the new NW reactions, Cheers!!
As someone who played drums for over 55 years, I am giving a big shout out to Kai. That double bass was incredibly intricate and incredibly perfect for the song. Way to go, Kai Hahto!
Thanks for this review! As a science geek, when I found Nightwish a few years ago I was overjoyed. There is no other lyrical music about science to this depth that I know of. Their symphony, "The Greatest Show On Earth" remains as their crowning achievement on this. BTW, the Shakespeare quote, mid-song, refers to the fact that we are all made of starstuff... the heavier elements in our body come from stellar fusion and from cataclysmic stellar events like supernovas. When you think about this, it is very profound.
I cry like a baby every time I listen to this one, grabbing the tissues and starting the video, I really cannot wait for you to break it down and help me understand why it messes so hard with my emotions! Hint, I love space and science & this hits straight home! 🖤
I love to watch people with a background in music do reactions, but yours are really my favourite! The respect for the band, the music and the people and story behind the songs and nightwish just ooze through the screen. Also, by listening together with you and listening to your comments en enthusiasm, my love for nightwish just grows! Thank you for that! ❤
Last time I saw Nightwish, Floor (and the rest of them) was able to deliver exactly the same energy at the end as she did at the beginning. She has unbelievable vocal stamina. So please don't be too concerned where they decide to fit this in the concerts. I may be wrong, but I seem to remember Tuomas describing her as, not the third singer, but the final singer with the band.
Good Lord, Chase. You are the smartest, most musically sensitive and attuned reactor I know of. You pick up sounds and techniques on first listen that I haven't even picked up on with repeated listenings. Well done.
This song never fails to make me start just ugly sobbing. It's such a great tribute to an amazing man of science. It captures that feeling we all get when we look up at the moon...
Me too. I met Eugene Shoemaker in JPL when I studied.. although I am a rocket scientist, he managed to pull me into the geology with his patient explanations of what he was trying to accomplish. Very emotional, and this song is a fitting tribute to a nice, kindhearted man.
9:47 I've seen your breakdown of Endlessness before this one and I already have learnt when you will get surprised to the twists and turns of Nightwish. :D
YES! Love Nightwish, but I'm not very musical myself ( more of a visual / lyrical person), videos like this really open my eyes & show me the things I never would have discovered on my own. Thank you.
@Outi have you heard Nightwish's song Sagan? It was a bonus track with the single Elan from Endless Forms Most Beautiful, but it didn't appear on the album. Yes, it's a tribute to Carl Sagan. ua-cam.com/video/1rT38pHbZl0/v-deo.html
My god, Chase ( and I'm atheist ). Once I'm a grandparent, I will have my grand children to watch your reactions. They are so educational. The way you disconstruct the songs and point the details and complexitys is astonishing. I've listen to Human.:|:./Nature a few hundred times by now, but your analisys to it's songs take them to a higher level. Thanks, Chase, for these wonderful moments.
In a time when science is under attack from so many sides, it is so wonderful that a group like Nightwish put the effort into honouring scientists. Wonderful reaction Chase!
I like it how they also introduce the exotic instrument used in the song in the lyrics! Or maybe the lyric was first and they then had to play it, too. Hammered dulcimer, if I have understood correctly.
He was also accepted into the astronaut program, but before he could go up, he was diagnosed with a congenital disorder so he couldn't go. His biggest wish was to go to the moon and hammer on some rocks. That's why he was given the honour of his ashes being sent to the moon. The quote from Romeo and Juliet, which was read by Thomas's wife' Johanna, was on a plaque that was on the vessel that took his ashes to the moon. Can't wait for the skeleton dance when you get to it.
The awesome thing was, even after he had been diagnosed, he stayed in the astronaut program to complete the training with his team-mates - despite knowing that they would be going where he could not - so as not to disrupt their training.. He was originally slated to be the first civilian scientist to go. He is the only person ever interred on another celestial body (although a few have been shot blindly into space), and lies near the lunar south pole, in the crater that bears his name.
I love what you said about the transition to the almost Siren/Alarm sound !! When I get to this part, I feel like the Danger of SPACE, even the dangerous act of getting to the Moon... But then the high notes, like a HEAVENLY Song....and then eternally at REST on the Moon !!! I cry every single time 💔😢 but a worshipping-type Cry !!! IT'S just amazing and so are You ❤️. Absolutely wonderful reaction, worth waking up early on a Saturday... ALWAYS !!! Thanks, Chase .
Outstanding reaction as always ! The thoughtfulness and deep understanding for their music is remarkable. This song has great meaning for me as my Grandfather was a great fan of Eugene Shoemaker and would share many beautiful stories about the stars with me .. Paul and I so look forward to these reactions, you Sir are anomaly ! Absolutely Brilliant thank you !
"This would be a difficult song to sing live...Which makes want to see it live even more". OH yes! Me too. If anybody can do it this band could! I think this is the most beautiful song they do. PS I still don't know how you get through Nightwish with Floor without tears . This one has salt water running down my face in copious amounts.
They have done it live ... check out the Hellfest 2022 video. And yes, it was tough to sing, even for Floor... she wasn't satisfied with the studio takes, and re-recorded it at home until she felt that she had it right. When Floor Jansen finds it difficult, it's likely that nobody else can sing it at all - and Tuomas could not have written it as he did without hearing her voice in his head.
Not all of us out here have been with Nightwish all that long. I, myself, just began listening about 6 months ago, and I know there are many others that are relatively new. After listening to my first song, "Ghost Love Score", as many I said "where has this group been, or where have I been, I'm 74. Aside from just the listening pleasure, I find it important to learn more about how Tuomas's thinking went into all this. And appreciating the wonderful abilities of all the members. I have no musical training, aside from the volume knob, so your comments are helping me to understand more as I listen over and over to their works of art.
Always a pleasure, Chase, to enjoy your first listen to these incredible songs with you. I have loved Nightwish's music for a number of years now and this new album is really special....your breakdowns of why and how it's put together, making it so special is priceless, thank you!!
Excellent reaction to and analysis of this amazing song. I agree with your comment about the intelligence of the song writing and the lyrics. Nightwish is the band for smart people - hey, not just because I like them!

Dude, just a quick note your reactions are in Australia. We shall promote your professional and easy to understand reactions as much I can down here mate. Keep smashing out your Insightful and easy to understand analysis on each reaction you do.
In interview Floor Jansen said she do not sing end of song live. It takes many time to get it right in studio and she do not want to spoil song in concert.
Great reaction. But one thing no one seems to pick up is how the first sections are structured lyrically. Floor in the beginning seems to be singing about / towards Eugene describing where he rests and what that means and the gentle Troy section (that is him singing, recognise his voice from his solo albums) seems to be the voice of Eugene responding and urging us on to come back to where he is. The whole song is almost a clarion call to inspire us to start exploring the universe as humans again and not leave it to probes and satellites.
I found you in your reaction of Noise. Instantly loved your reaction. I instantly went to your channel subscribed and have just finished watching every reaction to Nightwish and I fucking love your reactions more and more. So far I haven't seen anyone doing this indeept analysis of their songs and the speed you find stuff are amazing. Damn I have been listening to Nightwish since 1998 and I can still find new things. Keep up your fantastic work here and have a damn good day!
Oh man, I was waiting for you to get to this composition - I don't call them songs anymore, they are way more - because I knew you would like it and annotate it in the most marvelous way. Thank you once more for your reaction, yours are for sure the best out there! Kindest regards, Wim
Eugene Shoemaker is looking at the stars. But he also watches the earthrise everyday, he can see the earth as one, global, without countries or borders. Earth is our home, of the whole humanity. "Laudato si" is also the name of an enzyklika of pope Franziskus from 2015 about "concern for the commonly used house (earth)". It is about the protection of this house against exploitation and enviromental pollution, climate change, water ressources, the loss of biological diversity, degradation of living quality and social descent, global social inequity and the weakness of the reactions. It can not be ruled out, that someone like Tuomas has not thought about this too. The shakespeareian quota is spoken by tuomass wife johanna kurkela. It is engraved on the urn, which contains shoemakers ashes on the moon. johanna, troy and tuomas have founded a band called Auri, their debutalbum came out in 2018. thank you for your efforts and reaction and have a great weekend.
Thanks for this mate. You have very quickly become one of my favourite 'reactors'. I don't actually think that's a fair term for what you are doing because you actually educate as well. This song is just all kinds of epic. As a relatively new Nightwish fan, you content has given me an even greater appreciation for how good these guys really are. On a side note, I would also love to see you react to, or if you've heard them before, review some of Tool's music. You really are super helpful in appreciating the intricacies of music. Love your work mate. Will definitely pick up some of your merch. Cheers from Melbourne.
A couple things I love in this one that you didn't mention (as ever, not a criticism; there's just too much going on for one person to register it all, and you get more in one listen than I or most anybody gets in ten): 1. I'm a bit of a nerd for time signatures. In the verse (busy vocals alternating with busy instrumentation) it goes as 2 bars of 3 then 2 bars of 4. I can't actually make out if it's 3/4 or 6/8, followed by 4/4, but either way it's interesting. 2. At the very end, the two different vocal lyrics blend so well together. "Laudato" and "ad astra" share the same vowel focus, and apart from the sibilant "l" and "s", so easy to ignore, they also share the same consonants - the "d" and "t". So they blend magically. I think it's just ingenious writing to pair them.
That was a great reaction, again. I loooooove the ending of this song. Floor said they didn't expect such a huge reaction from the fans on this song and that live it's going to a real challenge but I mean... this has to be done live. I think it's going to change the Holy Trinity of Nightwish songs into a Holy Quartet.
Your right its a very hard song to sing live, i did hear Floor say in a interview herself that this is not a concert song, but if the fans wanted them to perform it, then they get it, and yes i think the fans do want to..lol
Honestly, out of all reaction channels I follow, yours is definitely my favorite, specially because of your detailed analysis. Keep it up and keep reacting to Nightwish please ! Greetings from Costa Rica !
Great reaction as always! It's funny how you say it doesn't sound like a normal Nightwish song structure, I know this is an album that some NW fans don't like very much because it's so different. Personally I've been really enjoying this album, and it's interesting, listening to their music over the years and really seeing the different patterns of growth! They've always put a lot of thought, feeling, and effort into all of their music, but as far as whole albums go, the last three have just been out of this world! They've basically explored the entire spectrum of human emotion as well and I feel like lately there has been more of an emphasis on healing in their songs rather than holding on to hurt/anger. Which honestly? I love. And I feel like it really shows them as Masters of Metal. It's a lot easier to express hurt and anger through the genre of Metal, but to be able to express soft and gentle feelings? That's a lot harder. Not impossible, and others have done it too, but Nightwish just excels at it. It'll be so interesting to see you working back through the older songs after this album and seeing all the lines of progression and inspiration and connection. Anyway enough rambling from me. But, I also had wanted to say, your NW reactions are the only ones I rewatch. Other people's reactions are good to watch once, but I never really feel like watching them again. But you always have something interesting to say and I just enjoy hearing you talk about Nightwish! After watching them through the first time with my full attention, I like to have them on in the background while Im doing something else like cleaning or drawing. So thanks and keep it up! 😁
Ive recently had the great honor to see this song performed live at one of their shows. The ending especially was ...actually a life-changing experience. The entire show was a thing of ever-increasing superlatives, it started exceptionally and somehow refused to stop getting better in leaps and bounds, but - apart from Ghost Love Score and the Sagan Quote they play before they bow at the very end, the ending of this Song definitely stood out. Now I'm quite an emotional person, I tear up quite easily especially when I hear music, but this was... different. I wasn't really crying so much as my eyes just started leaking a stream of tears. The "Ad Astra" hit a spot in my heart, for lack of a better term, that I was unaware I had, pierced right through and shattered every chance I had of keeping composure. Ive seen many live shows in my now decade-long venture into metal, bands big and small, I've seen Amon Amarth simulate an actual Viking naval Battle on stage, and yet... This was it. This was the Greatest Show I've ever attended. The best 2+ Hours of my life. Took me 2 Days to process everything, to even be able to put it into words. If you ever get to see Nightwish live, do it. By whatever means necessary. If you have to crawl a mile through Burning embers and empty syringes, do it. It's more than worth it.
These are THE most difficult lyrics and melody I have heard a singer try to sing and it is a great tribute to Floor Jansen that she went to the studio(maybe her own?)and practiced till she got the song right.
Thank you for this amazing reaction Chase! This is one of my favorites on the last album. The ending gives me goosebumps every time I listen the song.. I am one of the lucky ones that will see Floor live on the 19th of October ✨
I woke up this morning...thinking...it is Nightwish Saturday with Chase...yea. So I have been taking the journey of their new album along with you. I don't listen to any of the songs before your reactions. I know you are going to break it down for me to really help me hear everything that is going on. That ending though, I actually teared up a bit...so powerful. Thanks Chase have a great rest of your day.
I saw an interview with Floor where she said that she didn't really nail that final section until after they'd finished all the recording and she was back. When she got the 'tapes' with the choir, she tried it again in her own studio and finally got it. She says that piece took her voice to another level.
This song...legit...makes me cry every time I hear it. Ugh. It is so beautiful and full of so much emotion. Floor hits those notes at the end and I lose it everytime. Lol. It is of course in honor of Eugene Shoemaker, but the underlying meaning for me is about loss and grief. The man male vocalist is Troy and the color and texture in his voice is lovely. It’s amazing to hear him on more tracks. Harvest (the next song) is Troy front and center. Have a damn good day!
Not such a big fan of Troy as a singer myself. I find his singing very monotonous. I like it in this song and Harvest but I think that is clever writing by Tuomas knowing the limitations of his singers. Marco is on another level in comparison which made it odd that they would use Troy so much on this album. The Hows the Heart "acoustic" is an example that doesn't work for me.
Thanks for your reaction. IN the end you see a poem from Shakespear, which is written on his urn (chest with ashes) from mr. Shoemaker. There is a big grater on the moon named after Shoemaker. Astroids, impact and craters were his obsession. He was planned to hae a seat in the rocket to the Moon, but they found out he had a (on earth not life hreatening) blood illness and could not go. That is the main reason why they sent his ashes to the crater on the Moon. They play this live and ofcourse Floor has no problems singing it. ;)
Amazing job Chase!. When i heard song first the time i was like "What it this!?" and when read story Eugene Shoemaker song make 100% sense to me. Poem in song is important role in story of Shoemaker "he brass foil wrapping of Shoemaker's memorial capsule is inscribed with images of Comet Hale-Bopp ("the last comet that the Shoemakers observed together"),[19] the Barringer Meteor Crater, and a quotation from Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet reading And, when he shall die .... And the instrument in beginning of the song is Dulcimer, mentioned on the song lyrics "dreamlike dulcimer", very smart song writing:)
In case you didn't find out yet, the Shakesbear quote is also engraved on the urne of Eugene Shoemaker! I love your reactions, especially the joy on your face when you descover something new, priceless! Keep up the awsome work! The nightwish army loves you! Have a damn good day!
YESSS ! I have been waiting for this one 😊 After watching, I am happy you did a great job searching about E.Shoemaker. The philosophical depth of this song is truly transcendant ; I was hoping your reaction would catch that :). The quote from Shakespeare was carved on the capsule containing the ashes of E.Shoemaker - capsule which was rocketed to the Moon.
I dont want to repeat all the praise youre getting rigthfully from the other commentors, so simply thanks for the great reaction. But i need to adress one small thing. We still have some room till we get to "How´s the heart" from this album, but when you cover it, please do the acoustic version as well. Its such a different experience and to this day my personal favourite showcase for Floor´s and Troy´s abilities. Besides that, im looking forward for every video of yours, they really are a highlight each and every day.
This gonna be STELLAR!!!!! And by the way, I know a lot of people already said that, but when becomes to How's the Heart song, please make a double reaction with lyrics video and acoustic version on planet rock...
And the most notable line regarding this song was:
"Laudato si, mi Signore, per sora Luna e le stelle:

which means:
"Praised be You, my Lord, through Sister Moon and the stars,

The term "Ad astra" is used in a variety of places in ancient Latin writings as well as in some modern contexts.

Your absolutely right that a lot of reactors are acting for likes, they dont know anything about the band,or theire music.
Chase is the best together with tank, they understand the music and being themselves.
Oh man! I totally concur!
12:24 I've seen it live. And I've never cried that openly in a crowd before. That was one of the most powerful experiences I've ever had.
We stood in the perfect place. They had this movie in the background. When Floor started to sing Laudato si ad astra, there was a sunrise just behind her, and it was so powerful. That was my greatest religious experience ever. This album feels like a psalms for nature and our place in it.
The spoken part of this song is done by Johanna Kurkela, she's Tuomas beautiful wife
Lifetime of adventure is a must by Johanna.
And a great vocalist
damn, youre not lying she's gorgeous. haha, and she's a singer, might have to check her out
Her voice is angelic. And her violin playing is divine as well. I'm loving their group Auri.
I absolutely love how the instrumental break went into variations of the primary theme of the song. Brilliant composition by Tuomas there.
This is the one, I think most have been waiting for, and I can't wait :)
Hope it lives up to the expectation.
@@ChaseCarneson believe me it will...and more, you haven't heard Floor like this before.
@@Piia2023 I can't wait for Pan and Endlessness :)
I find I much prefer the acoustic version. It's lovely!

I appreciate that and I appreciate you!!!
Oh, it's not just me then. . . . . . . . .
I love Chase also with GLS, i directly subt
As someone who played drums for over 55 years, I am giving a big shout out to Kai. That double bass was incredibly intricate and incredibly perfect for the song. Way to go, Kai Hahto!
Saw it performed twice in Los Angeles. It was just as magnificent as the recording. It stirs your soul. Floor is phenomenal.
Its about 15 years ago when i find this unbelivelible croup, every song have some meaning, cant get over that.
I think to be at this level talent and hard work is not enough. These people have music living in their souls
Love this comment. Thank you Nanda
He did. He mentioned that if Floor would leave, then he would end Nightwish.

This made my heart veyr warm. Thank you so much!!!
@Gayle Eidson : Oh, I love your interpretation of the latter part of the song! 👍 Fits well with the story and concept.
Outstanding reaction as always ! The thoughtfulness and deep understanding for their music is remarkable.
Thank you, Dennis. I am glad you have found this band and are enjoying my videos! 👌

Aaaah thank you so much my friend. Very much appreciated 🇦🇺❤️
The "siren" sound is an e-bow used by Troy on a guitar :)
Thought so!
In interview Floor Jansen said she do not sing end of song live. It takes many time to get it right in studio and she do not want to spoil song in concert.
She really nailed it live as well
Great reaction.
Tuomas has wife called Johanna Kurkela whos also a singer and making the speaking voices in this song.
Thx for the reaction Chase, I told you you in a previous reaction you will love this one.

Live will be incredible. I have several of their albums and when I see them live each song gains so much as to be almost new.
Thank you Chase, I have goosebumps every time I hear this song
A couple things I love in this one that you didn't mention (as ever, not a criticism; there's just too much going on for one person to register it all, and you get more in one listen than I or most anybody gets in ten):
Kai did say in an interview that he had to learn a brand new kicking pattern for this song
This song is special! Brilliant breakdown as always. Fantastic UA-cam channel reviewing and breaking down the best the industry has to offer!
Looking forward to watch you reaction. I hope that you are well informed about this song, especially about Shoemaker himself!
Pure Masterpiece ...bone chilling
I saw them in San Francisco earlier in the year and it was special.
Was looking forward to this particular reaction so much and was not disappointed. Thank you!
These are THE most difficult lyrics and melody I have heard a singer try to sing and it is a great tribute to Floor Jansen that she went to the studio(maybe her own?)and practiced till she got the song right.
One ounce of Mr. Shomaker's ashes was taken by NASA to the moon as a tribute to his career. Regards from Argentina

Yeah, and hear it too..and she said she Will do it live 🤗🥰
Didn't she also say something to the effect of having to not over power, or over sing, the final section?
Absolutely fascinating, thanks for that @Graham Douglas! That increases my appreciation of the song and (if possible) of her astounding talent.
I listened all day long to this song, thinking 'I can't wait for Chase to react to this masterpiece!' And here I have it
Thanks for your reaction.
Poem in song is important role in story of Shoemaker "he brass foil wrapping of Shoemaker's memorial capsule is inscribed with images of Comet Hale-Bopp ("the last comet that the Shoemakers observed together"),[19] the Barringer Meteor Crater, and a quotation from Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet reading
And, when he shall die
....

After watching, I am happy you did a great job searching about E.Shoemaker.
