Amazing song and lovely analysis, as per usual. Only thing i'm struggling with is believing that that is you. You say it is you and obviously I believe that. At the same time, my eyes and brain just refuse to accept that that is the same person. Even with considering a small age difference. Partial face blindness is a hell of a thing 😅

Being from Belgium, I am no stranger to the Queen Elizabeth competition. I had no idea you had participated in this, and you even made it to the finals!
For the people not familiar with this competition, or with classical music: this is a yearly competition, but not always for the same instrument. It alternates between voice, piano, violin and more recently also cello. It is open to the most promising classical musicians from all over the world. You can only compete once. Getting nominated is already great. Making it to the finals is only for exceptional talents. And to be honest, it is very subjective comparing these finalists. The jury sometimes prefers a candidate for an original interpretation, while other times they see the interpretation as a flaw.
Competitors are isolated from the outside world during the competition, which takes weeks, while they have no idea how good the performances of the other competitors were. You only have one option: do your absolute best. This must have been absolutely nerve wrecking.
I'm listening to your performance at the finals, now. Absolutely amazing. And hard to fathom that this is the same woman that is so open to voices like Jinjer/Devin/Floor ... You truly are one of a kind.
Thanks Peter, and you're right on all fronts. It was a nerve wracking experience, and extremely competitive. I always felt emotion was as important as technique, and so I bring that emotion into each note I sing. Some of the judges score higher marks on technique while omitting emotion from their evaluation. I made it to the finals, but I didn't win.
No one in their right mind would do "Martern aller Arten" in this competition. I did. ;-)
@@TheCharismaticVoice , I always find the jury to be very conservative. I come from a family where classical music was very important, and the finals were always a subject in our conversations. Rarely did we all agree on the winner, let alone the top 3. I think with the vocal competition there is a bit more diversity in the repertoire. When the instrument is piano, you better brace yourself to listen to the same Rachmaninov concerto 6 times in the finals week.
But it is definitely true. There is a set repertoire that is more likely to allow you to win the competition. A few years back there was a violin concerto chosen by one of the finalists that nobody ever did before. Commentators were really confused, not knowing to applaud the bold choice or to be very critical because the usual repertoire was a bit more technical after all.
I was looking back at some articles. The week before the finals, you were mentioned as one of the 2 favourites. You must have made quite the impression :-)
But in the end, you are absolutely right. The competition and the jury puts technicality over emotion, most of the time. However the audience -also at home- does not always agree with that. The audience of the Queen Elizabeth finals is a pretty reserved audience. It is not always that they give an applause like the one you have gotten. On the contrary. I hope you don't look back to the experience with too much bitterness or regret. Because your performance has certainly moved some people.
Also, that polite applause by the Queen at the end, is about as enthusiastic as I have ever seen her.

Actually, Einstein did not work well with numbers. His genius was imagining spatial geometry through thought experiments. He worked with mathematicians to help translate his ideas into equations. IMHO it goes to never discount anyone's potential.

1 issue is the language barrier (mostly FR, GRM, IT). Most 'classical' (actually, it's 5-6 different periods that have all been grouped into 'classical'). But besides 'Opera', there are also many SONGS, which are probably more likely to have been translated, making them more 'acceptable' to listen to. There is some really cool stuff, actually. I'll always remember 1 recording I heard in college, where the singer hit a note with absolutely NO 'vibrato' (where the note 'wiggles' or vibrates) - just a straight note, and it was so PURE and powerful, it actually physically STUNNED me - like went right through me. I wish I could remember that song and recording, but I've always remembered that moment - 40 years later!

I stumbled across this performance last night. That was borderline punk rock. The energy, emotion, execution, and swag are what most performers imagine they will do but often miss. I wanted to roar when they showed the sweat. Watching someone work super hard and execute with excellence, without apologizing for getting dirty is a truly beautiful thing ❤.
She stood her ground and delivered. Fabulous and a true talent.

This the 1st time I heard you sing.. oh my God I can't believe how good you are.
I had to laugh every time she said, "This part is hard." If you'd asked me, I wouldn't have said it was hard. I would have said it was impossible.
This was an exquisite performance -- beautiful, stirring, powerful. I love it!
So let me get this straight.... You're one of the most 'heavy on musical theory' reactors on YT (delightfully so). You have that endearing quality of charming innocence crossed with nerdy enthusiasm (which is basically my drug of choice). You're stunningly beautiful! And now we're seeing you in this performance, an accomplished and renowned soprano, who not only sings like an angel, but can credibly act (one can _feel_ how ticked off your Konstanze is). You can sing in another language with a pronunciation and accent that can fool the ear of a native. And now you sit here ten years hence, wearing the same dress! So what, are you a brain surgeon and a particle physicist in your spare time? I'm in awe.... Brava!

I used to be a fairly good singer when I was a LOT younger, and no matter how well a performance went or how much praise I got, I ALWAYS found faults in it lol. @@johnmullens2857 I think that is the same for any "profession" one has. I have no talent in music other than listening, but I am a martial artist for some 15 years now and before covid was in quite good shape. Others told me, that in competition or just technique I am really good and did well in cmopetition fights and so on. But I still find things in everything where I am not 100% satisfied with myself. Noone will see these things but I know them and feel them. I think it is part of the way to become really good at what you do even if it means you will never get the 100%.

6:32 Look at you pulling the energy up through the floorboards! 16:44 the part that amazes me, although the pitch is good is that sustained crescendo has so much build and power! Fun fact: the orchestra members are also breathing through the phrases, while not nearly as exhausting as singing, it is not easy and getting all of the notes right to support the singer and emphasize the vocal line is practiced over and over until we can do it faster than we think we can, too. Don't we all wish we had the energy we had when we were 24?

My wife and I were speechless thru the entire video...then I mumbled something that my wife said sounded a bit like "Holy Shit"... Then we watched it again in silence. That's some beautiful charismatic voice you got there. Not sure why we were surprised, your speaking voice gives you away.
I always thought that she must b an average opera singer at best, mostly because she never talks about what she does or sings while doing her reactions. I like her a lot and to see her singing so spectacularly awesome is such an amazing surprise. She's so humble and down to earth I never thought she'd be this good. Absolute world class!! And then the way is able to praise herself without shame.... Such a fine fine line...she's amazing
My thoughts exactly! I listen quite a lot of classical singing. I also do little singing myself (but I don't just have time or rational place to practice solo singing). Here every note (I mean, seriously, every note) is clear, strong, in control etc. Low register sounds great. High register sounds great. Some German pointed that the pronunciation is perfect.

Wow, Elizabeth Zharoff I knew you were an opera singer, but I am blown away by how mesmerizing and complex your voice is. Your voice is exquisite. I think I would probably get three words in before I got stumped. It is amazing how loud and how hard one must sing but making it sound beautiful at the same time. Those runs are incredible.
I know this video is a year old. But I've only recently (in the last few months) found this channel and have been mesmerized by all of your awesome analysis and technical break downs of all my favourite childhood metal songs. It's clear from listening to you talk about how people sing (or even scream) that you know what you're on about and can certainly talk the talk, and I assumed you'd be a good singer yourself. But watching this, my my can you walk the walk too! Absolutely insane skills, and very humble about it too "I think I did OK" understatement! Even more respect on top of the plenty I already had for you!
Mr. Taylor, like you, I only recently came across this channel, and I'm in full agreement with you on every point. Ms. Zharoff's humility comes across in her analyses of other singers as well, focusing the discussion on _their_ abilities and accomplishments. Funny thing about "how people sing or even scream": I remember Renée Fleming once described operatic singing as "a kind of controlled screaming."

Didn't pay attention the 1st time through then saw this comment & went back for a rerun & it's almost like she was conducting the orchestra with those brows...like they were dictating the story & not just the orchestra but the rest of her was just keeping pace with wherever they lead (even before she started singing...while telling the conductor "let's do this" at the start). Very fierce them brows.
Such a great voice, my mother was an opera singer and we were raised on the NY Met and Opera when we cleaned the house. Since I was raised in an house without AC in the south, we had open windows and fans and the neighborhood knew when we were cleaning the house or my mother was warming up. She always did scales in the shower and was a Soprano and did not need microphones to be heard. She started singing professionally at 5 until her late 50's, and was always sought out to sing for various churches in the South Florida area.

I thought I couldn't love her any more than I did before. But watching her celebrate herself was BEAUTIFUL! Yes, her singing is incredible, there is no doubt. But to be able to celebrate yourself and not come off as cocky or pompous.... Liz is a gift to the world.
She knows she's a badass and people who know singing and art know she's a badass.
She doesn't have to, nor could she ever, convince pop culture fans what peak performance is.
There are a lot of these "Vocal Coach Reacts to..." channels out there. But there are precious few of them where you ever actually get to hear what said vocal coach is capable of themselves. I feel like Elizabeth Zharoff just sang this beautiful aria in a room full of all those other reactors, then stretched out her hand, dropped the mic, turned her back, and strolled out of the room without once looking back. Bad. Ass.
The badass part is that although she would be perfectly within her right too. That is obviously not who she is.
I love how young Elizabeth portrays Constanze‘s feelings with her body and face and is incredibly immersed in what she‘s singing (in a foreign language, mind you) - a true performer! 👏🏻
And I adore how you explain your feelings and the technicalities of your singing and performance, a glimpse into how opera singing works. Also, I feel your restraint in watching and listening without singing along - one can tell that you‘re feeling every single note! ❤
Apart from the great voice, your facial animations are always a joy to watch, you can just see so much life flash across it all of the time.
Wow Elizabeth - not only was that one of the most difficult female arias in opera in a way of singing - it is also in german. And German is really tough to learn. But not only that - it is german from the 18th century. That is nuts for somebody who isn't a native speaker.

I'm late to the party, but I just want to say, I love watching you in this reaction. I can see your body and head movements are 100% reenacting your performance on stage without actually singing. As a cellist, I do this every time I hear a piece I've performed before. You aren't just listening, you're FEELING it again and that's the part I miss most about performing live.

I know, I'm very late to this video, but I'm also amazed at the projection that many opera singers achieve. I am friends with Roberta Alexander, an incredible soprano, and the power she has is otherworldly.

I don't remember hearing an aria like this, and I did hear and experience a few operas including Mozart (Magic Flute), Wagner (e.g. The Valkyrie. etc.) for example.

Amazing performance of one of my favorite Mozart arias!!! As a composer, I've always loved Mozart's use of four instrumental soloists in the orchestra, paired off in various ways, reacting to the soprano (especially since one is a cello, my primary instrument!!).
I'm absolutely stunned. Not by your singing. But who could possibly top this? Who won this competition, if not you? I'm gobsmacked.

When you realize The Charismatic Voice is very respectful and polite with her reaction videos, because let's be honest: nothing she has reacted to comes close to what Elizabeth can do with her voice. Beyond jaw dropping!
That's a close minded statement, She is great but saying "nothing she's reacted to comes close" is very immature and very opinionated. It's Just like me saying that Freddie Mercury is the greatest singer of all time which I believe he is, However it is only true to me not everyone else, Everything is objective, There is no best of anything only what is best to you. Just because she is not the ABSOLUTE best that has ever been on the channel, doesn't mean she is not amazing. In the comments it's clear that everyone is in awe with her talent and very few choose to diminish others' accomplishments like you did.
She is fantastic and I would listen to her for many productions undoubtedly, but Damrau and Pavarotti for example have dedicated their entire lives to the productions they put out and it's simply not fair to compare their career paths.

This was amazing. There is a saying "those who can do - do, those who cannot do - teach". But this video is the proof that you really can do it, and you do it it with such grace and mastery!

This is one of the reasons why I like Elizabeth's channel so much. There are so many "vocal coaches" on the net that I never know which one is genuine and has the experience to really analyze other world class singers and which one does not. That beautiful blond darling here not only KNOWS what she is talking about, she also has the credentials to prove it. Bloody phantastic!

I always find it amazing that singers can sing for minutes on end without missing a word. This is a whole new level. 30+ mins for a simple song and it's a full range! Crazy!

There are SHIT TONS of "vocal coach" personnas on youtube. MANY are great, talented, and informative. SOME are rank amateurs with good common sense advice, and there are also MANY that don't know what they're talking about and can't sing. Well, You can't say ANYTHING LIKE THAT about Mrs. Zharoff. I've seen her sing in varous situations, and she's never short of fantastic, and her analasys and reactions are top notch. She catches stuff other coaches don't even know to listen for. GRADE A start to finish. Best personality too. 15/10

Your confidence and ability to compliment yourself is a very attractive quality in artists when it comes from a humble place, as is obvious here.
Man I feel dumb. I live in Belgium so my wife and I follow the Queen Elizabeth competition each year if we have the time. I never knew you were a finalist and this really puts in perspective your skill level and that you are not just another vocal coach. I googled the news articles from back then (in Dutch) and it's fun to read the reviews and what the judges had to say about the performances :-).

@@TheCharismaticVoice I'm sorry if I got your hopes up. I misinterpreted the article and thought they were from judges. It were actually sopranos analysing your performance. I should have known better. I will do my best to translate with my limited skillset. Jard van Nes states:" Zharoff is an incredible talent and I hope she will take the time to further grow. Her voice is rather monochromatic (literal translation) and her German has to improve." Ilse Eerens states:" I saw a young soprano battling herself in the performance but at the end, she still stands. Furthermore, she had a very good connection with the orchestra, something we haven't always seen with the other contestants the past few days. And then the article goes own with you telling you felt tired and sweaty.
That's so funny, that she comments on the fatigue and perspiration in this video 10 years later, and those were also her comments immediately following her performance...
She must have been REALLY tired and REALLY sweaty... lol

Of course, you hear at some points, that it is sung with an accent, even you don't understand anything anyway. In opera singing - you don't even understand the lyrics at all, aren't you? That Zharoff girl does know how to put on a show and do funny and expressive faces and gestures. She always looks like she's having fun, and watching her makes me have fun even though I don't know a lot about music. Also, that dress really fits her!
as a German I'm really impressed by your pronounciation. And this "spitting out" at the end of "zuletzt befreit mich doch der Tod" is totally in line with the german pronounciation. We tend to pronounce soft consonants hard at the end of a word, so "Tod" is rather pronouned "Toht".
A lot of Germans mis-spell "Tod" ("death") as "Tot" because of that. It doesn't help that the adjective "tot" ("dead") is actually spelled with a "t".

I love the fact Elizabeth has the same facial reactions to classical as she does to heavy metal. But in truth it is appropriate as operatic singing is definitely as intense and focused as heavy metal.

That is such a great reaction. I don't know enough about opera (though I do listen to it occasionally) to write a critique like that, I definitely enjoyed her performance and liked her voice a lot. She *should* have CDs out, even if they're not strictly opera. Think of all the great classical crossover artists like Sarah Brightman that have a great appeal to the masses with adaptations of well known arias and more classical interpretations of great pop melodies! You can also easily put more symphonic rock behind that voice, like on Sarah's track "Fleurs du Mal", or even stuff like Nightwish or Within Temptation. I'd buy that CD in a heartbeat. Heck, as a songwriter, I'd love to collaborate on it *with* her! hehe

Watching her face as she listens to herself is absolutely enthralling: she's a little self-conscious because she's on camera (but, being a pro, not overly so), she's actively listening (and critiquing) as a highly-trained musician, and she's bemused by the notion that other listeners are vicariously (voyeuristically?) joining her in this. This is a powerhouse, bravura performance in every respect.
I also loved the way she was 1/2 mouthing the words along with herself. You can plainly see the joy of it all.
I am a first soprano. When in high school we sang songs like O Fortuna (nothing like this song!) but I completely appreciate your performance. I would literally shake if singing a song remotely like this! The comments about fuller lower notes, spitting, pronunciation…so familiar! The adrenalin rush must have been amazing. Bravo, Elizabeth!
"O Fortuna" should have endeared you to Elizabeth; She loves the "Carmina Burana". Guess this reaction was made some time after the premiere of this video. It likely impossible to keep up with all the comments seeing all the videos she is making
