I love Floor's professionalism in this song where she sings back up vocals and never overpowers Marco. We all know she can but she actually just sings her part. I have massive respect for the comfort of the band to do this.
I am not saying I disagree with you, as Floor was subdued to the appropriate level, and her stage presence is such that she can snatch the spotlight by smiling....but I am not sure that on a strict power play that she could actually over power Marco. That man has a pretty massive power plant of his own.

I can only hope they work together again in the future. The video of he and Floor singing Ava Maria is one of the most beautiful moments I've seen, when at the end he rests his head on her shoulder. There is sincere love and appreciation between them.
This is one of the reason Tarja was let go. Annette originally did the back up in the album (amazing singer in her own right) but before the change, Tarja's husband and manager was against her being backup in this manner
He has been singing like that for 37 years consistently. So it is not "damaging his vocal chords". He just has a great natural range of vocalization. And, he doesn't push his voice over what he naturally has (his natural ability is huge!...Marco is a BEAST).

Marko is amazing and I'm so happy to see someone appreciate him as much as the Nightwish Army does. For more see "While Your Lips are Still Red - live at Wembley" or "Ever Dream - live at Wacken" where Marko and Floor together just shows everyone how great they are.
Marco just recently released his first solo album, and it's really quite good. Anyone who wants to hear more of him, look for "Marko Hietala - Pyre of the Black Heart", or "Mustan sydämen rovio" if you want to hear him in Finnish; the album has full versions in either language available. And yes, his first name is officially spelled with a k. He's always used Marco as a stage name but decided to go with the official spelling for his solo record.
The bit where he speaks, he's asking the audience if they should sing the chorus together ;) I'm absolutely in love with this song, was so great to hear it live at this show.
What I love about this recording is how Floor respects Marcos voice and understands that she is the backup singer in this song. Hands down for both of them.
That would be so great. Though I think Gilmour's voice suits it more, Marco is doing great. It was the first song I hear him singing, and I was like: wow! :-D
Nightwish actually has quite a few folks songs. Particularly with their second vocalist, between Tarja and Floor. I have always been impressed by the way that they write the songs to work with each singer's unique voice. Anette was very good at the folk style, and some jazz and pop.
The Floorgasms were amazing, but this is the Marcogasm I've been waiting for. He's just such a supremely talented individual and it was so exciting to see Elizabeth break some of that down and put into words why he's so amazing (because for someone with absolutely no musical education, like me, I can hear/feel why something/someone is fantastic but could never articulate it). I also recommend, for personal listening experience of more songs outside their typical wheelhouse, "While Your Lips Are Still Red" and "Slow, Love, Slow."
Just a great song, even though those "weasels" abandoned him🤣🤣 You missed the intro to it where Marco was saying that the "weasels" had left him on his own. I can go to bed now. Ahhh. Just what I've come to expect. Great reaction🤘🏻🤘🏻
I've commented it on another one of your videos too, but YOU MUST check out "Ever Dream" by Nightwish live on Wacken 2013. It's a wonderful example of the Floor-Marco vocal duo. Believe me, it's going to be the type of dynamic Nightwish song you're searching for!
Please keep doing Nightwish, Elizabeth. They are also a perfect band to point your students toward. Consummate professional musicians and performers, yet humble bandmates. Some of the best in the world at their trade, yet able to not let their egos detract from their performances. Love this band...
Marco took Music Theory and understands it on such an amazing level. He knows how to blend entirely different tones together both instrumentally and vocally.
Two of Marco's best performances are on Wish I Had An Angel and especially Bye Bye Beautiful, the song he wrote in response to Tarja's leaving of the band. They really showcase the power and dynamics of his voice.
That speaks to this bands character so well and the respect that they have for each other. The fact that Floor can take a backseat and let Marco shine is so nice.
On Floors youtube channel Floor and Marco recently casually talked about aliens and you can hear in the conversation how much respect and almost some kind of idolization Floor has for Marco. Which is totally justified since he's making awesome music with his band Tarot since 1986. Marco is extremly talented, works super hard and seems to be a very nice guy.
Northgate a friend of mine met the group after a concert in the states a few years back. He said that Floor and Tuomas were swamped by media and stuff from local radio, and Marco, Troy, and Emmpu were just hanging out with the people that were backed. Super nice guys from what I am told.
@@The_Greml1n Generally, If someone is talking about a flute, they are talking about an instrument held sideways (traverso), where you blow across an opening. For whistles (Irish whistle, pennywhistle, low whistles), they are end-blown, and held straight out and down. Whistles come in many keys/sizes from tiny soprano G down to huge Bass A. Pipes usually refer to the various bagpipes, the most common of which are Highland (Scottish) or Uilleann (Irish).
I can't wait to hear what Elizabeth thinks of Marko doing the main vocals with Floor as back up. Her backup vocals are georgous, and I love how the other members just pick up the melody and fill out the music towards the end
Troy Donockley is indeed playing what is called a Low Whistle, so you were very close. Might I recommend you also listen to "High Hopes" live from the End of and Era DVD, it's an amazing cover by Marco. Really nice review of one of my favorite live performances by Nightwish.
@@shanialover Shania girl, that's okay. I'll always love you no matter what :-) and by the way I saw how you said you were tied up and Elizabeth and Kirk were playing with you. I was going to say, hey I'm the only one that supposed to be tying you up, but I froze up, I just couldn't push the key on the keyboard:-) ...hug's..
I would like to recommend “While Your Lips Are Still Red”, perhaps the live version at Wembley. Another great song featuring Marco mainly with Floor at backing vocals. Other Nightwish songs in general that I really like are “Shudder Before the Beautiful” and “Élan”. Thanks for the reactions, I really enjoy them.
Not sure anyone mentioned it yet (I didn't read all 1,600 comments) -- the whistle being played at the beginning is a low whistle made by Colin Goldie. Probably the best low whistle you can buy. Not sure about the key. The most common is a low D or F. Brian Finnegan also plays those but mostly in high D. This particular shape with the "squared" windway/mouthpiece was invented by Bernard Overton in the 70s. Similar whistles are also made by Phil Hardy in England.
Please, listen to Disdain - Revamp (Live). In that song you will hear Floor in a heavier metal song. She growls, belts and makes a little opera part; all in one song! Hope you enjoy this.
I never get tired of seeing Marco being appreciated. Great reaction, it's been awesome to experience Nightwish with you. My recommendation for a voice you might love is Anneke van Giersbergen. She has such an interesting voice and is one of Floor's major influences. A great starting point would be "Travel" by her former band The Gathering. In my opinion, the best version to listen to is here on UA-cam, "The Gathering - Travel (TG25: Live at Doornroosje - unofficial video)". Hope you get around to it because I think you'd really enjoy her voice and the song as a whole.
Again--yes again. I love watching your reactions. Not because you are a master of the voice. Because we can truly see your joy and reactions to hearing this. Watching you enjoy these songs makes us enjoy them even more. Please keep making these videos. A true breath of fresh air. Danke.
The Gathering By Delain Featuring Marco I would also highly recommend, sorry if youve already done that one, new subscriber playing catch up. you can find it be searching for Delain ft. Marco Hietala - The Gathering - Masters of Rock 2017 DVD
"Nothing Left" and "Control The Storm" are good ones to hit as well. And not a Marko song, but We Are The Others is fantastic - not just Charlotte's performance, but also the message.
Actually he sings many great songs with Delain. Many live performances on Delains Hunters Moon album. Songs like sing to me., Nothing left, Control the Storm, my body is a battleground and more. He is very versatile like Floor and also came out with solo album s few months ago.
It's definetively a great performance by Marco. But in my opinion not one of Chorlotte's best ones. She can do so much more than just using permanently her headvoice. But yeah, Delain would definetively be wonderful, as there are not many reactions to this wonderful band yet.
I would love to see you interview Marco, he has so much experience and as you said he has such knowledge of how to use his vocals and manipulate it how he wants, despite the botched surgery he had a long time ago. Also he’s as passionate about music as you are, maybe even more.
Hah - I knew you'd love that one Elizabeth: does that shiver count as a Marcogasm I wonder? ;-) For a song with Marco and Floor that couldn't be more of a contrast, try Romanticide from the Wacken 2013 concert.
YES,, UP-VOTE Romanticide please Elizabeth. Floor + Marco = magic in what they do with their voices. I bet it's something you've never heard in your life. You will be floored to hear their vocals get very interesting in Romanticide.
Yes Elizabeth has reacted to all 3 of Nightwish's epic songs (GLS, PatP, GSoE) but interestingly she hasn't analyzed anything from Wacken 2013 yet. Romanticide definitely has the most vocal acrobatics so should be a good choice though you couldn't go wrong with anything from Wacken.
@@gencoserpen1260 Agree. All of Wacken is fantastic. "Vocal Acrobats" Love that choice of words to describe what they do in Romanticide.. Sure hope Elisabeth goes for it. Her reaction would be priceless.
Me being a fan of nightwish since angels come first album, I must say that my absolute favorite track by them happens to be not one of their originals, but a cover. That is not to imply that their own music is somehow "less", but indicate just how good of a job they did with this performance. I also am a Pink Floyd fan for as long as I can remember, and that is exactly who the cover is of! The song is called "High Hopes" Many many bands have attempted to cover Pink Floyd over the years but most fail to recreate the melancholy ever so present in the soul of Pink Floyd. This song is from the "Division Bell" album which is during David Gilmour era. I feel like Marco has not let them down. You should react to th Nightwish cover, but I recommend first reminding yourself of the original by listening to it first. After all, it's not one of the widely know songs.
I love and enjoyed this soooo much. Marco's voice is just beyond my words but you, Elizabeth put it perfectly. He is one of those people I wish I could have known in person.
Mother of Dragons meets the Viking. I've been living this fantasy of GoT and Viking crossover for a while. I liked how expressive you are. The way you explained things with such enthusiasm is uplifting. If I remember correctly, Marko had vocal cord polyp removal surgery in the late 90s. It's amazing how far he's been to right now.
Another wonderful video from you Elizabeth! I love that you take the time to analyse and describe what Marco is doing, how he's achieving his sound, and enjoy every moment of it. Joy is infectious, and anyone can see that you absolutely love music and vocals. I'm not a singer myself but I love hearing all about it from an expert like you. Thank you for making UA-cam a happier place, looking forward to seeing more of your videos!
You look so happy all the time and we can see you are REALLY excited and enjoying these artists. It's really cool to listen to them through your expert eyes, it gives me the sense of a newfound admiration for them, it's a different way of admiring their music. Thanks for this opportunity =)
Other songs were Marco is singing are e.g. NW cover version of "High Hopes" and Tarot "Tides" . Of course the duettos with Floor in Finnish Heavy Christmas sessions are epic too 🤗
While Your Lips Are Still Red is another must hear on the Marco front, for Nightwish anyway. He also does great work in several duets with Charlotte Wessels and Delain. Control the Storm or The Gathering are amazing live.
A beautiful reaction to a beautiful song. Thank you Elizabeth for opening up a whole new world to me with regard to the technicalities and intricacies of the voice. Paul 😊
Aw, Elizabeth, this was the sweetest and best breakdown of a song. Love your enthusiasm and how happy you look listening to music and how you get so excited to give us your thoughts! Marko certainly is one cool guy and so talented. The Nightwish cup runneth over with talent...lol. Hope you continue the Nightwish journey! 🤘☮💗
I really enjoy your reactions. Not only do you dumb it down for the non singers out there so we at least have an idea about what you are talking about (thank you for that by the way!) But your face is also so expressive! The look of utter delight is wonderful. You can tell by the way you tip your head or look up when something intrigues you, which makes me listen closer. Thanks for producing an enjoyable reaction channel and being open to discovering new types of music.
Hello Elizabeth! About the screaming thing, you need to check Time or Sons of Winter and Stars both Live Rehearsals At Sonic Pump Studios by Wintersun. Love your videos. Greetings from Brazil.
My favorite Nightwish song that Marco sings is “While your lips are still red”, it is the most incredibly beautiful and captivating ballad, that he sings pure and clean. Please react to the official video because it is like a mini movie that will leave you in tears. ❤️
I've been listening to Nightwish for years and this is one of my personal favorites. Another band I'd recommend a blind react for is Amaranthe. The Nexus, Inferno, and Call out my name are all solid picks.
The wind instrument is the largest mode of the Irish tin whistle. You really need to examine the range of vocal technique (tenor, baritone, and bass screaming in choral arrangement; full Queen/Beatles-like Rock 4-part harmony) in Wintersun's Sons of Winter and Stars (rehearsal version). Also, you're a really lively and knowledgeable person. Keep up the great work.
This whistle is known as a low whistle there's a folk metal band, Eluveitie, that features this instrument quite often. The tin whistle aka penny whistle is the "higher" version.
I truly love your involvement in the song and your vivid facial expressions! Goes to show that a person who knows what the deal is, CAN appreciate music (or art in general) on a whole different level. Great to see your mind and spirit welcomingly open up to this beauty. Who knows, maybe in 20-some years we will talk of NIGHTWISH and the likes as the 21st Century Classical? This is Marco's song... by Marco. One of the approx. 5 per cent that are not single-handedly composed by Tuomas. :) In its old folk / Celtic feel, it opens up a different side of NIGHTWISH, and gives a great opportunity to showcase Marco's vocal spectrum. Before the song, he engages in delightful banter, telling the audience "those weasels" in the band have snuck backstage and left a single man with a guitar to entertain 20,000 people. Well, he says, I better come up with something fast. :))) Based on that "intro", there is the full appreciation of his broad smile when the rest of the group come in his support as planned. :) Last but not least (and I am surprised nobody seemingly posted that below), there is a telling joke going around connected to this particular song: "Only one singer can boast to have Floor as his back-up"... ;D \m/ P. S.: There is always plenty of possible ways from here. But there is merely a single live cut containing material from NIGHTWISH's latest album, "Human. :||: Nature." (out this April). That is the acoustic version of the beautiful folk-tinged song "How's the Heart?", featuring only Floor and her accompanist, Troy. Who knows, as long as the virus perpetuates, that may be the only "new" live rendition for a while. And it will be worth your time!
You're in for something very different then the usual Nightwish song. Can't wait for your reaction Elizabeth! Your observations are always very interesting and insightful. Love the channel.

Hands down for both of them.
you should try their Pink Floyd cover High Hopes, Marco is amazing singing it
people just ignore this cover idk why :(
Marko kills it, yes, but it's a great performance as a whole.
absolutely yes!
That would be so great. Though I think Gilmour's voice suits it more, Marco is doing great. It was the first song I hear him singing, and I was like: wow! :-D
I forgot about that cover, going to have to rewatch it now.
Nightwish actually has quite a few folks songs. Particularly with their second vocalist, between Tarja and Floor. I have always been impressed by the way that they write the songs to work with each singer's unique voice. Anette was very good at the folk style, and some jazz and pop.
If you want to hear more of mellow Marco, find While Your Lips Are Still Red... if you haven't already, that is!!
one of my favorite nightwish songs
yessssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss it's one of my favs
Yes I agree and of course Wembley 2015 live version.
@@qayaki yep
Or their cover of Pink Floyd`s High Hopes
Marko singing a Nightwish cover of High Hopes is my favorite example of his vocals. Talk about impressive
I also recommend, for personal listening experience of more songs outside their typical wheelhouse, "While Your Lips Are Still Red" and "Slow, Love, Slow."
while your lips are still red! yes! such a beautiful song
Came for the Floor reveal. Was not disappointed!
"Hi!"
You are a god damn delight. 🙂
I think Elizabeth might like - Kamelot ft. Simone Simons - The Haunting live at Norway (2006) ᴴᴰ
I was just going to suggest that one.
@@cmorrow74 maybe even more Kamelot - Abandoned, really showcase Khans voice
Or, indeed, the 3-part song, "Elizabeth" from Kamelot...
That song is how I got into Epica, I -had- to find Simone.
March of mephisto
You really cannot put more talent and musical ability on stage at once than these six performers!
Alternate title: "Vocal coach Elizabeth fangirling Marco for 15 minutes straight" :)
Any person who listen to marco. man or woman will be fangirling over him
How can you listen to Marco sing and not fangirl over him?
Everyone should be fan of Marco!
Has she heard While your lips are still red?
Everything this band puts forth is a masterpiece
Just a great song, even though those "weasels" abandoned him🤣🤣
You missed the intro to it where Marco was saying that the "weasels" had left him on his own.
I can go to bed now. Ahhh. Just what I've come to expect. Great reaction🤘🏻🤘🏻
Floor and Marco's voices just blend together so naturally
I've commented it on another one of your videos too, but YOU MUST check out "Ever Dream" by Nightwish live on Wacken 2013. It's a wonderful example of the Floor-Marco vocal duo. Believe me, it's going to be the type of dynamic Nightwish song you're searching for!
yea i am not even really a nightwish fan but that song
Absolutely, that song is a Floor belt-fest!!
@@randyblankenship8203 Just wait until she hears She is My Sin from that concert
I love how Floor and Marko sound together. It's almost like two children are playing freely and so pure but on the other hand, it's so mature.
Floor growling
Nightwish - Yours Is An Empty Hope.Vehicle Of Spirit.Live at Wembley (2015)
Two of Marco's best performances are on Wish I Had An Angel and especially Bye Bye Beautiful, the song he wrote in response to Tarja's leaving of the band. They really showcase the power and dynamics of his voice.
Its a must when you have someone like floor doing the backing vocals.
Oh gosh, she is so good at this, I love her music choices. I also love her expression, passion and knowledge. Also she’s stunningly beautiful!!
thank u. heard this for like the 40000000 time
Showcase Marco amazing range : *High Hopes* live. Showcase Marco and Floor blending : *While Your Lips Are Still Red* live.
They are all so talented, never get tired of hearing them!!!!!
Troy is playing an Irish tin whistle. Possibly a "low whistle", tuned in D.
That whistle is lower than low D, pretty sure it's a Bass Bb
Low whistle
So stupid question for you. Maybe you can answer it or someone else can. What is the difference between A flute, Pipe, and a Whistle?
@@The_Greml1n Generally, If someone is talking about a flute, they are talking about an instrument held sideways (traverso), where you blow across an opening. For whistles (Irish whistle, pennywhistle, low whistles), they are end-blown, and held straight out and down. Whistles come in many keys/sizes from tiny soprano G down to huge Bass A. Pipes usually refer to the various bagpipes, the most common of which are Highland (Scottish) or Uilleann (Irish).
He is playing an Overton Low D whistle.
This song is amazing... it brought me to tears in a few spots. BUT. your reactions. are. PRICELESS.
I can't wait to hear what Elizabeth thinks of Marko doing the main vocals with Floor as back up. Her backup vocals are georgous, and I love how the other members just pick up the melody and fill out the music towards the end
You must be something really special if you can have Floor as backup vocals
@@pdimi3829 Someone should send Marko a shirt with "Floor Jansen is my backing vocalist" on it.
You are my favorite Nightwish reviewer. Your enthusiasm and knowledge is infectious. in a good way. No Covid.......
Ever Dream next for epic belting by both Floor and Marco
Troy Donockley is indeed playing what is called a Low Whistle, so you were very close. Might I recommend you also listen to "High Hopes" live from the End of and Era DVD, it's an amazing cover by Marco. Really nice review of one of my favorite live performances by Nightwish.
Super reaction, one of my faves from Nightwish..
It looks you really enjoy Nightwish songs! thank you for discover this band to your followers!
I can't wait for this one =) This and While Your Lips Are Still Red made me really appreciate Marco
I'm pretty sure she hasn't
@@Idefixu nope.
Elizabeth can't deny it - that WAS a Marcogasm!
Don't forget "Ghost River"
But yeah, "Romanticide" needs to be up there on her list of Nightwish reactions.
I love Marco so much, his voice is magical
If you want to see young Floor please listen to her band After Forever "Dreamflight" 2007 live at Progpower
I love this band with all my heart 🙂
I approve of this reaction... :) Now for While Your Lips Are Still Red for more of Marco and Floor being awesome together.
Are we sure she can handle more Marco?
The talent in these musicians is just insanely good. Remarkable.
Love how excited you are when listening to music! You can tell how much you just love music.
Thank you for reacting to this one! I am really looking forward to this.
Lady! I have really enjoyed your reactions and your Nightwish journey! Love your smile! Thanks
You need to do Marco's version of High Hopes. Wonderful
This has always been my favorite Nightwish song to sing
Of course the duettos with Floor in Finnish Heavy Christmas sessions are epic too 🤗
Yes! High hopes please!
I absolutely LOVE your expressions when reacting to songs and your smile is Epic! Thanks for these
Love, love, love your reactions. And thank you for your professional commentaries - they are VERY interesting.
You understate the harmonisation when you say "nice", it's beautiful.
Next react to Nightwish: Yours Is An Empty Hope.Vehicle Of Spirit.Live at Wembley (2015) OR "Weak fantasy" live at tampere!!!
Everyone wishes their significant other smiles at them the way you smiled though out this reaction. 😊
Second this. Would love to see her react to some Wintersun!
:) Last but not least (and I am surprised nobody seemingly posted that below), there is a telling joke going around connected to this particular song: "Only one singer can boast to have Floor as his back-up"... ;D \m/
Such an awesome live band! If you ever get the chance, don't miss it. Was supposed to see them for the fifth time this year but it got delayed until May of next year. I can't wait.😁
“High hopes” for some more Marko please
Another epic song, another great review from you. Please keep these videos coming. Thank you
While you are at it, please listen to some of Marko's solo album!
