ONE SENTENCE defines the point: “as long as you’re both playing by the same rules…” It is a game. If you are not playing someone’s tournament, then you’ve spent the money, time and effort to play with your toys however you and the other people playing with their toys want.
I don't pull punches because I don't feel that this actually helps the other player. However, I do play collaboratively when the other player is floundering. I tell my opponent what I might do in their shoes, and why, even when it hurts my army. They have a better gaming experience for it, and we both learn about strategy and tactics.
Great Video Scott, I fully agree with your points. The best games are ones that come to the wire against a opponent that has been chill with you the hole game, the worst is when you been rule lawered to death and the game has a clear winner in turn 2. You have to know what you and your opponent wants out of the game and honor that agreement in your conduct. One of the best quotes I have heard about players that only want to win is: Those that are obsessed with winning there natural state in life is losing. I know that a bit harsh but in though out life I have found that it to be pretty true. Any way mate keep up the good work.
Thank you for watching! I think you're 100% true on that, all of the tryhards I've ever known were pretty sad individuals in their personal life. No accomplishments, socially unaware, all of that. Small men need to win at playing with small men to feel like they're bigger.
It's sad...40k was once a beer and pretzel's game that was almost exclusively played casually...now it's a e-sport where you have a "And now for something complexly different" video on how to play casually....
One game that i actually really appreciate right now for a casual player for 1 reason is Age of Sigmar. That system of the double turn, where the player who takes it dips behind in score but gets ahead on the killing/battling aspect of the game is the perfect tool for ensuring the game stays enjoyable for as long as possible. 2 people who know the game well can often pretty much tell at the top of a round "ok, this player is going to wipe out that player and close out the game." Being able to say "well lets see what would happen if you took a double turn here" is a fantastic way to take a game that would be 2.5hrs of enjoyable closeness out to 3hrs.
I have almost quit the hobby because of the cheats. I seen one guy role a dice behind terrain, he rolled a 5, declared 6! He is a club founder, and his opponent is his mate and co-author of a rule set. Go figure!
Been enjoying your perspective, Scott. I had your channel get suggested on UA-cam and it took me a minute to say ‘oh hey this is the guy who wrote Brutality.’ Been getting into Alpha Strike Btech and I will tell you right now, if you try to make that into a sweaty competitive exercise, the game’s 2d6 mechanics and action economy break in half. Loosey goosey with both people having a good time is the way to go.
I think the entire video could be summarized in 2 points: 1. If you want to play competetively, you play to win. Period. 2. If you want to play casually you play so both parties have a good time, and to win. But the good time for both takes priority over winning. And on that front its like a dance. It takes two. If somebody agrees for a casual game and then brings a net-list that crushed a global tournament, f***k them. They had their chance and blew it. They didnt honor to the contract, neither should you honor it and force yourself to play with them. On the other hand, when you meet those people with whom you can game and trust that they will not throw dice behind corners, or misinterpret a broken rule because its RAW. When you meet those people that you can explore the games with, thet you can paly some epic but imbalanced games. Oh you cherish them and treat them like the diamonds they are.
What is that vehicle on the table in the video? I remember having a toy of that model growing up and it was my favorite to use to transport my toy soldiers. Would love a model of it.
As a life long filthy casual, I fully agree 100% with what you say here.

Well said and thank you for the video.

I only play solo and I never have arguments with myself. 😁
Me and you both. It's so much fun!
I stopped playing solo because my opponent was just a raging jackass. Can't stand playing with that guy.
@grisch4329 lucky thing I have multiple personality disorder Lol!
Filthy Casual Solo Gamer! The only way to play is as a Meta Chasing Hard Core Play To Win Crush Your Opponent Solo Gamer!!!! 😄👍
