What GW Has Truly Lost
Their financials might be winning, but it doesn't mean they haven't lost important aspects of who they were.

The Biggest Gaming Convention You've Never Heard Of
Thank you for this video dude - it helps me understand so much. My 2 year 40k journey has been terrible. My local store suggested I start with Kill Team and they sold me the Pariah Nexus box. I painted the Flayed Ones Necron team entirely before I learned that whole box was deprecated by 6 months and nothing in there was usable in current rules. They never should have let me buy that as a new player. I went back and bought the Chalnath box, all the new tac ops cards, and the book to build compendium teams. After a few months of painting I finally got into the groove of playing and not long after KT 2024 came out. All the books and cards I had are now useless - I literally threw them away. Had to go back and buy equipment packs, new token sheets, new dice, download a new app, and learn a 3rd set of rules all in under 2 years. I don't understand how any new player could make sense of how to get started even in something that should be as simple as Kill Team.
Nice Star Trek TNG picture!
Everything talked about in this video, and most of the comments are why i just switched to different games. That and i realized man i just prefer skirmish games, not a fan of painting 40,000 dudes and not a fan of most of the people who are playing in my area, as most of them list tailor and meta chase. I just like throwing a thematic list together and using that against another thematic list. Cant really do that anymore.
Kind of like Dungeons and Dragons. Hate the new editions so went back to the BX, BECMI and AD&D 1st Edition versions. All the rules I need to have a great game and I own em so all it costs is my time and pencils, lol
You know who else buys terrain? Model Railroaders, items from Woodland Scenics and the like can be made into any terrain. GW would do well to expand their market - modelers buy Citadel Paints, frankly they're quite good. But no GW wants to screw over their audience... and don't get me started on the whole TTRPGs need a monthly subscription deal.
Here is the thing...most of the push-fit space marines (like the ones in the leviathan box set) almost require you to sub assemble...if you don't you are going to get a crappy result....my philosophy is if you can get away with it assemble then paint, but if you can tell that painting your Aquillla is going to look crappy if you have to dodge the bolter to paint it, then sub assemble
Preach Scott! I had been in the hobby since 40K 3rd launched. I bought the Leviathan boxed set, but, I've not played any games of 10th or bought any codexes. I haven't actually purchased anything from GW for the past year. I play OPR and Mass Brutality (thanks man) and a bunch of indie games, so I'm still spending the money, just not with GW. It's not fun anymore, I can't and, more importantly, don't want to keep up. I don't want to talk about meta before I try and have a game in a game store. I just want to have fun when I'm doing activities I do to relax, which sounds like a tautology, I don't want a second or third job trying to keep up with "the meta."
Idk if this is actually in the lore at all or if this would go against it, but my head cannon for them is that Slaanesh kind've "focuses" on the excess of the seven deadly sins. Mainly cause I recently read through FMA lmao. Excess of Pride (vanity, self confidence) Excess of Sloth (laziness, literal sleep) Excess of Lust (sex, attraction) Excess of Greed (could be money but also stuff like land, weapons, trinkets, etc) Excess of Gluttony (food, alcohol) Excess of Wrath (anger, violence) Excess of Envy (Jealousy, Covet)
100% 🎯
Been in and out of the game since 3rd edition and the game is just trash now. I would rather support some guy with a 3d printer and just play One Page Rules. Less headache and the guy with the 3d printer would appreciate my money a hell of alot more. Plus the 3rd party sculpts just look better.
GW was very much already a publicly held company 16 years ago and their company work culture, product offerings and PR and indeed profits were at low points. They certainly aren't perfect, but they are objectively a better company in every way than they were 16 years ago.
Welcome to the dark side……
Trust is the most valuable currency
Integrity.
They killed off Whfb, anyone who continued to support and contribute towards their main line games is lost and is getting exactly the treatment they deserve.
I’m a fan of picking an edition or two a sticking to it
As a beastmen player, GW lost what little faith that had remained in me when they squatted them from AOS in favour of Skaven. I might someday try Old World with my beastmen but that day is very far away because I expect GW to tell me to go f myself. In a way I am very happy to have gotten into Blood Bowl. Thanks to the power of 3d printers and stl files I made my own Chaos Chosen team with bestigors as Chosen and gors as linemen. Perhaps someday I will invest into 3d printing myself.
It’s a sad story.
GW has been doing this for decades. It's a business. 3rd edition was the last time they put the game ahead of the business model. Around 93 or so was the beginning of end, especially for WFB. A GW rep came by our FLGS and I learned: this is a business. All they care about is selling product to kids, and they cater to people buying, not playing, the game. It will continue to do so, and that's GW.
Yeah, I'll sadly never give them another penny. I have tons of their stuff from 20 years of being a fan.
The only things saving Warhammer are the videogames and the content creators, on the lore and even VTuber side. And maybe thr Amazon show, if Henry Cavill has control
They lost BILLIONS of dollars. They let World of Warcraft slip away
Ran and owned by fans, you mean back when it nearly went out of business? 😂
more and more people i know have 3d printers or are using printed models. the only good thing i think is the gw app for the rules, at least u get automatic updates on your codex and core rules.
Most of this has been said over and over again for around 10yrs now, you pays your money you takes your choice.... the end
I wonder when they will start with loot boxes, where you can get anything from a primaris to a kroot
I stopped the hobby after they killed fantasy
wow your so welcoming to your channle and the GAME of war hammer. its a game dude, and the rules are fucking convoluted.
Games Workshop have lost a lot, but what they have gained is enough money for the execs to wipe their asses on it on a daily basis. To the people at the top of the company who drive the decisions that's much more important than fan goodwill. If the bottom dropped out of the market entirely, the business folk would let it die and move on to another profitable opportunity and do the same thing to it.
Is that the Cthulhu Death May Die Godzilla promo on the table?
No, just a 3d print.
Assuming 3D printing will kill plastic kit building is like assuming inkjet printers would kill jigsaws.
Thats why Battletech is so precious. I am not a huge fan of what CGL is doing with it, but the rules are consistent.
That feeling when you buy a book/ set of cards and 3 or 4 weeks later a new edition of a game such as kill team gets announced? Sucks
"I do know, not everyone of you believe that, but it's the truth." This is a stupid scentence. Not much space for other opinions, ha? Anyway, 2D printers will be the end for card games like Magic the Gathering. Oh wait...
It's up to you and your friends which rules you play. The rules they release are just a suggestion.
It's becoming popular so the edgy kids don't want it? :p
GW has always been ridiculously expensive. In my youth, making $7 an hour a few decades back, I just could not afford anything from them except for me once saving up for a Bloodbowl game. 40k was priced beyond imagination. Not only could I not afford it, but even of I could, I would spend my money elsewhere to get more product for my cash. Now, as someone who can afford GW if I chose to buy games, I won't . I absolutely resent the company now and have zero interest in any of their products. As far as purchasing rules, I have no problem doing so. However, I wont pay more than about $20 to $39 for a rule set and that better be a good set and offers free support and updates. Also, it needs to be a physical book or something I can print out. I share the rules during my games and dont expect anyone to show up with anything. Just come, play, and have fun. I play a lot of different miniatures wargames of which zero are from GW. I probably purchase 5 to 10 different rule sets a year and spend several hundred $ on stl files I print myself although I also still buy plastic and metal miniatures too. With all of this complaining about GW, I'll have to say the manager at my local Warhammer shop is very cool and only because of him, I'll go in there and buy the over priced paint from time to time.
Respect.
GW should move away from making minatures and focus more on selling 3D printable designs. As the technolgy becomes more accessible their mintatures will become obsolete and more expensive as they sell less bulk amounts.
I have no problem people printing models but for me personally I love building models as if they are legos.
@viewtifuljoe4412 Sure, but the GW models don't always come in parts. Also, you can find multipart prints. You can find a wider range of cooler looking sculpts to print. It would be good to replace some impractical GW models. For example my pewter Dark Elf hydra is falling apart constantly due to the weight of the metal neck and heads. It would be great if I could print myself a resin model and glue on these lighter resin parts. Would sure beat pins, green stuff, and epoxy only for a neck to fall off anyway.
Agree about the 2 year deal. And the changes made between editions are not always refinement of the rules' but rather needless changes fir the sake of changing. Yeah with wife and kids my opportunities to play were limited and hard to get the value from the edition.
I'm still sore on 4th. Especially for Chaos. Wah.
i stopped at 7th. never got into tournaments-still play occasionally with guys like me-narrative driven instead of points. havent bought anything since,
I've lost trust with GW interms of the game rules and the constant FAQ in 9th edition it became so frequent that I lost track of them and lost interest in playing the game. I just collect, build and paint the models. That's it
Personally liked the Dataslate stuff but it honestly showcased how management cannot write a rulebook to save themselves. Corporate execs and management are always the ones to truly blame.
I've never owned a single copy of the rule book. I'll own the physical codex for Necrons only because I prefer physical to digital. I just hate the constant FAQ updates changing EVERYTHING. I tell people that I'll be using the book rules and ignoring the FAQs
Random question. Where did you get those display shelves on the wall?
They are actually Funko Pop display cases from amazon. There are two different sizes, price per square inch, the $75 one is the best deal. There's also a $45 one.
@LetsTalkTabletop Great thank you!
Gw was panicking when all the fan made stuff was booming. Sure great for spreading the EXSISTANCE of 40k but they knew at the core a team of paid peoples dedication to the hobby is nothing compared to a fully fledged fan made series.
GW has a long and storied history with allowing their ego to crap on their fans; the most pathetic example I've ever seen is when mutant chronicles first came out, GW had implemented minimum order sizes, so he went from ordering like 20k a month to 0 a month, and he was certainly not alone. This was when Mutant Chronicles first came out, and they gave him a bunch of stickers that said "These can be used with Warhammer 40k!" on them and they begged him to put them on his mutant chronicles stock. He refused, naturally. 6 months or so later they caved.
The fact you had to buy the rules in the first place has always been extremely toxic and anti-consumer, but these policy changes with regular updates and the FAQs just shows how much this can be abused by a company that just doesn't care about you as a customer any more. Buying new minis or updating your old ones to be rules-compliant sure, that's the literal game. But having to buy a magazine for $60 a pop to even know how you're allowed to play those miniatures on top of that is bizarre, nevermind the frustrating and often confusing way these rules are printed where people don't even use their bought codex to look up the rules because it's a waste of everyone's time.
I played Heavy Gear and Warmachine over a decade ago, and got the miniatures itch with the release of Space Marine 2. So i looked into GW and... Y'all a mess. I was eyeing Grey Knights but there's talk of everything transitioning to Primaris scale (and i refuse to run baby carriers), plus the rules shifted away 18 months ago and they're due for new ones soon. To say nothing of the fact that grey knights lost a bunch of unique flavor from last edition. I'm sticking to videogames. At least there the patches are mostly free.
Resin printer goes BUURRRRR.
