I love Miyoo's stuff so far, they seem to actually know what's _really_ important in a small retro gaming device like this; but I've learned that I can't stand in-line shoulder buttons. The Miyoo Mini's inner shoulder buttons were practically unusable for me, but even the outer shoulder buttons were a real pain to use with the angle they were at. You had to essentially press forwards against the top half of the device while your grip naturally lies on the bottom half, and the device was too small for it's own weight to counter the force of you pressing the button, so it was super awkward. The Miyoo Mini Plus seems much better in that regard, since it looks like the shoulders are concave so you should be able to apply force more downwards towards your grip instead of forwards into the screen. What I really wish is for Miyoo to make a similarly small horizontal device with stacked shoulders. Not sure how they'd pull off stacked shoulders while keeping the device thin-ish, but I can dream.
Pocket go (and 2) were close to that dream in terms of ergonomics and size, slightly bigger and more updated specs, and it would be possible. I still like my pocket go a lot...

Your reviews are always so fair! Ive been watching several other channels and sometimes the criticism of these devices seem to seep into niche personal preferences based on the person reviewing. You however, seem to bring the least bias review with going into deep dives which most people can follow. Overall, I greatly appreciate what you do! PS best intro and autro tunes! 🎶
I absolutely agree with you. Russ is pretty much the only one who actually does reviews that are comprehensive, concise, balanced, fair, and objective (as far as possible). This is the only video review he was waiting for to make a decision.

@@anbernicguy I've heard of people making parodies of their own stuff before. I don't quite understand why he wouldn't just call it the same thing and just say oh it's available for both.
OK, I scored a Miyoo mini a few years ago with the case (v2/v3) for $45 brand new. I love the device. Onion OS SHOULD be the reference STANDARD for portable device like this, it's just so perfect in every way. My flaws, the display is too small, and no wi-fi(retro achievements and moving games), this is a game changer for me on the mini thing. I used my Mini a lot, Softball games for kids, between innings or waiting for the game to start or just around the house. I always had this thing around. I have a SteamDeck (too large to bring everywhere) and a RG353M (wanted more than PS1). I am thinking about selling my Mini, as they are going $175+ on ebay, and cashing out and buying the new one.... Even though I don't need it but, the pocketable 4:3 display is nice time to time on some games... Besides size, the new Mini sounds like the dream replacement...
I would've liked to see a size comparison to the GBA SP. A lot of people find the controls on the SP to be too cramped and I fear this would be similar. I'd like to see Miyoo make something more in the original GBA form-factor.
Loved the feel of the controls of the Miyoo Mini and I really liked Onion OS and it's quick save implementation. But, I always felt like I could just never feel comfortable with the small size, just wasn't for me. This seems to be more of the same, just bigger, so this might be the one.
Marketing wise, the name is perfect and a good idea to tie the 2 models together. They should have included the case too and upgraded the speaker, considering the widely available mod for the original mini.
Bro I literally just got the rg35xx because it was a bigger miyoo mini and now they make a bigger miyoo mini! The timing!! I'm loving thr 35xx though getting my buddy to help me install garlic os on it so I imagine that'll just make it better
I preordered my miyoo mini plus and even though I already have a miyoo mini v2, I’ll use the mini v2 when I go traveling or on breaks at work. The Mini Plus will be my go-to handheld for at home play. The build quality is so high that I think the price point for both of them is justified. I think if a person knows how to solder, these devices can last a very very long time. They have replacement buttons and it’s highly moddable.
@@TheMightyClark When it comes to these two, in terms of power it really doesn't matter. They both play up to PS1. If there is any more power, i mean what will you use that power for? to boot onlion os 1 sec faster? At the end of the day, they both run all the games up to PS1 the same, with fractional differences most likely.
I imagine it comes down to preference and custom firmware at the end of the day. Onion OS is likely more mature than the alternative, so that alone sells the Miyoo + for me.
With the current build of Garlic, the 35XX runs at 1.5 gHz without issues, so technically it's a little bit faster. It's pretty much the same thing with wifi, but then it's going to be harder to get and it's looking like about $10-15 more expensive.
@@Dalmatinac3 I mean I just saw Tekken 3 chugging on the Mini+ in this video. The 35XX at this point has been able to handle those more intensive titles with ease at stock clocks, and for anything that somehow slows it down, can boost the CPU to over 1ghz and play the whole PS1 library just fine. So if someone were to want these handheld with PS1 in mind, there will be a tangible difference in terms of compatible games.
Well, I ordered one. It should come in about a month. This is my first time getting into this sort of thing, so I'm kind of excited. I'd love to hear more about the wifi features, especially the whole retro achievements thing.
great channel. i discovered it looking for steamdeck accessories and have now seen a number of your other videos and have found them very well put together . you earned my subscription. alas you're costing me money as i tend to want to buy everything you review. on my way to find a miyoo mini plus
An update video on how the mini+ is handling would be nice. People seem to be having issues on control quality of the device. Screen falling out, artifacts, dead pixels, etc.
I'm not normally crazy about most of these kinds of retro units to be totally honest, but the possibility of RetroAchievements and the atomic purple style is totally a selling point for me.
@@NamelessDjinn as someone who has 0 idea what you are talking about. I do know what regular achievements are (unlike Nintendo who end up doing it better.)
@@bland9876 retroachievements is a website/database that basically has scoured the code of thousands of retro games that allow them to have an achievement system. Not all games have them, but the majority of the games you played as a kid have a good chance of having achievements via the website.
Because of you, i purchased miyoo mini and i really like it. Because, at that time, i'm going for surgery on my right hand, so it's comfortable to use on 1 hand. I even decide to buy 1 more miyoo mini so i can swap micro sd from 1 to another if the first one battery depleted. Best decision. Thank you Russ.
My main complaint with using my vita as a retro handheld is the buttons. The psp buttons might still be my favorite feeling buttons on a handheld. So many of these handhelds go so small it's frustrating.
I have an honest question. How do you feel about so many people using your reviews as a major part in their decision making to spend their hard earned money? That has to feel like a really major responsibility. I don't take anything anyone does as gospel but you're one of those people for me that can sway my buying decisions. I'm looking forward to your Mini Plus/RG35xx comparison.
I've wanted a Miyoo mni plus every since I've seen the Miyoo mini. Unfortunately I could never find one and now that I've lost my job dew to my diabetes my gaming has come to a stop mostly, Great review as always and I defiantly got to get my hands on one of these ASAP.
LOL i saw the announcement last night that this would be uploaded at 10am est and that’s exactly why i’m on youtube right now 😅 really disappointed i couldn’t get a miyoo mini v2, but i’m curious about getting this one
"The Miyoo Mini era is now over" This statement made me very sad :( I feel very lucky to have managed to get my hands on one at a reasonable price; it's easily the most incredible small handheld that's ever been made and I really hope that someone can fill that market niche again with another amazing product!
Already bought the pre-order of my black transparent miyoo mini plus! Thank you for the reviews. Miyoo mini is apparently too small for me. Despite small hand's size, it's unplayable longer than 30 minutes and i hope the 3.5 Inch screen will save my eyes and hands.
My issue with PS1 on the Miyoo Mini was always the fact that it has no Analog Sticks, or more importantly, just too few buttons in general. Ape Escape, even Megaman Legends, were super tough to play without L3, R3, and the sticks. But also the shoulder buttons not being stacked like a PS1 and the heavier reliance on shoulder buttons in general made it feel more awkward as well. The GBA only had 2 shoulder buttons so I could just use both for the same function or choose whichever was more comfortable, and I could have a secondary shoulder button for things like fast forward or other OS features. But the PS1 needs **all** the buttons and gives me carpal tunnel. lol EDIT: Actually for GBA, I could make L/R to X/Y and ignore the shoulder buttons alltogether. PS1 is basically the only system I played often that needed shoulder buttons at all. So while you could run PS1 games on it, it's really not a comfortable experience. lol. I'd love to see an emulation handheld that looks like the New 3DS bottom half. (Dual analog) that can play N64 and PS1.
I'd like to go over some points about the device and this video. 1. I think mentioning the fact that it doesn't have a clock should get its own mention besides a footnote towards the end of the video. I know you mentioned the hardware was the same besides the Wi-Fi but I think it is an important enough feature that is a deciding factor for some people (for Pokemon games mostly). The automatically advancing clock every time you boot the console works but isn't accurate and manually setting the time on every boot/wake up from sleep is accurate but could get on people's nerves very quickly especially if use the device for short play sessions rather than long. Definitely would be on my list of dislikes. 2. Could you also say what that rectangle under the D-Pad is? is that where the Wi-Fi module is? 3. Maybe my unit was different but I find it hard to remove the battery cover from my Miyoo Mini. It's pretty solid for me. One slip and I feel like it could separate my nail from my nail bed or at least break it lol. But again it could be just my unit. I have the V3 version for reference, with the different sticker on the battery but before they did the chip swap that required the new firmware. 4. Miyoo Medium is accurate but what do you think of Miyoo Midi? 5. I think another thing to add to the list of dislikes is the lack of stereo audio. I kind of get the cramped nature of the Mini being only mono but I don't see why they couldn't have added stereo to the Plus. Maybe my point earlier about the Wi-Fi module being where the other speaker would be but I'm sure they could move things around easily to accommodate it. Thanks for reading ☺
I've really enjoyed this review! Out of all the awesome portrait handhelds displayed here, I still prefer my Wood Grain ANBERNIC RG351V. Though, I like them all. They are all great choices. The Miyoo Minis have that battery compartment door feature that's a very convenient feature for swapping out a bad battery. I do wish that ANBERNIC and Powkiddy devices had the battery compartment door feature.
Powkiddy v90 has a removable battery. It is a super low powered device, but it will eat up some gb games. Great for those and some light SNES. Its not a great device, but it's solid, pocketable and alot of fun if you don't think you are going to play PS1 on it.
I hope it will be easier to get, but I'm afraid scalpers are already on it. The only problem I can see with this device is that it looks like it will be as fragile as the original Miyoo was. The screen border is basically at the edge of the shell. One drop and you're out.
Jokes on them, apparently due to the demand of the original Miyoo is producing an absurd number of these. Scalpers might scoop up the first and even second waves, but Miyoo will keep putting more out and the scalpers will be left with suitcases filled with product they can't move at a profit.
@@zeframmann1641 jokes on you, 50% of RGH discord residence are scalpers. they will release 2ndhand used miyoo mini by any day now. because those hoarder junkies arent even gamers, they're smart sellers.
I'm a little bummed they replaced the volume wheel with buttons. But I'm also glad that many of the mods from the mini still work. Can you upgrade the speaker using the same upgrades available for the mini?
So I've been thinking about trying to get the mini V2 for a long time, but this Plus seems much better for me. Only hesitation on my part is not having Bluetooth for headphones as I don't want to go back to wired ones and don't want to be blasting out sound off the speaker when on the go, commuting etc ...what's everyone's take on this? Do you just play without sound when on the go?
Isn't this the truth... I've been into retro gaming for many years but still relatively new to these dedicated handhelds. I don't even bother watching videos from anyone else now that I've found his channel. I'm not even interested in the miyoo mini or the plus, but he's like the Bob Ross of retro gaming haha just awesome session after awesome session.
After all this time of wanting a larger Mini, now I find myself wanting to try the original mini just for that small size. FOMO is a pain haha The Mini Plus still seems good though. The 35XX's slightly larger size is a turn off, but the longer chin might be more comfortable to hold.
I find the chin almost necessary for my large hands. I usually end up using my pinkies as a form of support while holding it that I don't think the Miyoo can do. The buttons would be too low for me. Not to mention I think proportionally, anbernic nailed the Gameboy aesthetic better than Miyoo with the chin being more pronounced on the bottom, letting the speaker grill have it's space down there.
Against $70, I'm still quite happy for having hunted down 3 Miyoo original PocketGo's for under $110. Despite adopting to the same line early, to amount for plenty of flaws in the early builds, they're still largely the same experience for limited portable use, PSX plays about as fine as ever. And more money for me to buy new games with, not having to cry and moan about individual pricing between 60-70 bucks like it's the price of milk and eggs. Why three, well, I don't like catching a habit just to go cold turkey when the device breaks. And on top of more battery life than I ever could need, swapping the memory card is a clean way to organize stuff like rom hacks and regional variants. Mainly, for the use of playing RPGS side-by-side in two languages, which also benefits from the horizontal form factor and minimal size.
I snatched one of the last Miyoo Minis and was really unimpressed with the screen- the contrast changes dramatically at even the tiniest of angles, so much that my eyes are seeing different images (insert image of wide-eyed Byleth). Is the + any better, or maybe even the RG35xx a better buy?
I can confirm that the screen on the RG35xx is actually very nice. deep, dark blacks and good saturation. It's not an OLED but you could almost be forgiven for thinking it were one at a glance. However, the panel is somewhat prone to occasional microstuttering, so if you're sensitive to that, be aware. I don't think most people notice it, though. (And even I don't always notice it, and I am kinda sensitive to microstuttering.) The device has its quirks - the Garlic experience isn't quite at parity with Onion yet, but the build quality is immediately obvious, and the buttons feel great. The dpad issue can be DIY'd in a couple of different ways. I own a number of much more capable handhelds than the 35xx, but I keep coming back to it.
My Miyoo mini + has revived my love for retro games and gaming so much, I of course got it on amazon where it did come in its own carrying case so I didn't have that issue at all, as a woman I have smaller hands and I find the mini + fits perfectly and comfortably in my hands and I absolutely love everything about it. I don't think I will need to purchase another gaming device like the Miyoo anytime soon as long as I have this one :)
I bought an original miyoo mini (well, maybe a v3 or whatever) and got it all set up with onion OS and my stack of games. I don't remember even dropping it, but after I went through airport security and sat down before my flight and tried to turn on my system it didn't work. Really disappointing my portable broke before I even left for my trip. If this new mini plus is more sturdy, maybe it would be worth picking up to replace the original, although I'm wary that since the first one broke the same company makes a delicate product in my experience..
I have several handhelds and agree the original fragile Miyoo Mini isn't a good choice to travel with. My Anbernic RG280M is the one that seems most sturdy & pocketable.
@@granday nah I think the general consensus around the community is that this device is out of production for good at this point. But I do hope that somehow you’re right I’ve been wanting a miyoo mini 😩
They don't have access to the screens, which was a major reason for the shortages. Doubling down on a product they can no longer get the parts for doesn't make much sense.
in my opinion there is no valid reason to buy the miyoo mini plus because there is now the rg35xx on the market which costs much less, has higher specifications and a much higher build quality. Furthermore anbernic is the only company that offers the possibility of having, on request, all the spare parts and this is a fundamental thing that nobody says in their videos.
Your comments looks like propaganda as none of it is true :) I don't think the RG35XX costs less, as Anbernic count fees on shipping to hide the real handheld price. I also don't think the specs are much different. The rg35xx needs to be overclocked to have decent performances on garlic os and there is a huge hit on the battery. The miyoo mini SSD202 chip is just great for consumption (up to 10 hours on the miyoo mini plus) and retro gaming performances. Finally I never had issues with Miyoo spare parts, I have 3 spare screens, a dozen of membranes and buttons for the miyoo mini. They were always reactive with nice prices. (12$ for the screen, etc) As for the build quality, how can you say the anbernic is better as you don't have both in hands ?

The miyoo mini plus costs 150 dollars, the rg35xx with expenses and VAT around 85/90 dollars, but do you realize what you are saying? Do we want to talk about the layout of the back buttons? Are those of the miyoo mini better? But please! finally the spare parts are almost never available on aliexpress miyoo store and lately they can't be found anymore, anbernic gives you the possibility to buy everything you want from any console, in 5/6 days they arrive at your home and they respond to messages after 15 minutes! @@bear532 Someone mentioned in a comment that RTC will work thru WiFi. Is that not actually the case?
Your reviews are always so fair! Ive been watching several other channels and sometimes the criticism of these devices seem to seep into niche personal preferences based on the person reviewing. You however, seem to bring the least bias review with going into deep dives which most people can follow. Overall, I greatly appreciate what you do!
PS best intro and autro tunes! 🎶
I absolutely agree with you. Russ is pretty much the only one who actually does reviews that are comprehensive, concise, balanced, fair, and objective (as far as possible). This is the only video review he was waiting for to make a decision.
I bought my Miyoo Mini Plus recently, and i absolutely love this device. It's very pocketable, and you'll be doing lots of gaming with it if you have it with you. Absolutely get Onion on this device.

So you're one of those scalpers... awesome
@@Streetsupra88 Nope, I just don't use it any more as I have other devices. If I can make a profit, I'll take it just like anyone else.

Was it?
dood you look great in front of cam and its noticeable that you got comfortable with it, congrats on channel growth
Marketing wise, the name is perfect and a good idea to tie the 2 models together. They should have included the case too and upgraded the speaker, considering the widely available mod for the original mini.
Wonder if the speaker is the same and can use the same speaker to upgrade.
Thx for the video. The better d pad sold me. Just ordered the grape purple one! Can't wait!
What are the differences between Mini Plus and Mini v2?
Can't wait for a full comparison with 35xx, it's gonna be interesting
I feel like the 35xx might edge it out in power, but I am really excited to see.
I love how “well loved” your RG280V is. Looks like had some nice times.
Well, I ordered one. It should come in about a month. This is my first time getting into this sort of thing, so I'm kind of excited. I'd love to hear more about the wifi features, especially the whole retro achievements thing.

My main complaint with using my vita as a retro handheld is the buttons. The psp buttons might still be my favorite feeling buttons on a handheld. So many of these handhelds go so small it's frustrating.

That has to feel like a really major responsibility. I don't take anything anyone does as gospel but you're one of those people for me that can sway my buying decisions. I'm looking forward to your Mini Plus/RG35xx comparison.

LOL i saw the announcement last night that this would be uploaded at 10am est and that’s exactly why i’m on youtube right now 😅 really disappointed i couldn’t get a miyoo mini v2, but i’m curious about getting this one
"The Miyoo Mini era is now over"
This statement made me very sad :(
I feel very lucky to have managed to get my hands on one at a reasonable price; it's easily the most incredible small handheld that's ever been made and I really hope that someone can fill that market niche again with another amazing product!
But the PS1 needs **all** the buttons and gives me carpal tunnel. lol
EDIT: Actually for GBA, I could make L/R to X/Y and ignore the shoulder buttons alltogether.
Thanks for the write up. I’m torn between getting this and struggling with PS1 games or just buying two systems. One for SNES and another for PS1.

I don't know how much you get from the affiliate link, but I figured it's the least I could do given all the content you give us Russ. Thanks!
Thank you for doing the Contra D-pad test! Very useful info. Cheers!
@@jacobnobles8453 Thank You! The V90 is the other handheld that has the battery compartment door. I forgot all about it. I still have my black V90.

oooh, slick transition from the mini to the miniplus during the intro.

Awesome! I was more excited for this video than the Miyoo Mini plus release
After all this time of wanting a larger Mini, now I find myself wanting to try the original mini just for that small size. FOMO is a pain haha
The Mini Plus still seems good though.
Thanks for the link Russ.
Great review.
It's almost like it is made to be viewed rotated 90 degrees. The viewing angle reminds me of the 3ds sweet spot
@@integralogic Yes! I remember thinking something like that!
(And even I don't always notice it, and I am kinda sensitive to microstuttering.)
The device has its quirks - the Garlic experience isn't quite at parity with Onion yet, but the build quality is immediately obvious, and the buttons feel great. The dpad issue can be DIY'd in a couple of different ways.
I own a number of much more capable handhelds than the 35xx, but I keep coming back to it.

The mini was honestly too small for my liking. This looks a lot better!
Defo. Was perfect for my kiddies but I had trouble holding it comfortably
I think this channel might be better than wulf den coming from a noob. You helped me pick rg405m and mini plus
I think I prefer the rg35xx form factor as it's a bit bigger but maintain the same screen size
Did it come with Mario cart already loaded on it?
My Anbernic RG280M is the one that seems most sturdy & pocketable.
excited to check this out, love your videos 🙌🏻
But can it run DOOM?
If it can emulate GBA, there's ports for DOOM 1 and 2 :P

Instead of doubling down on their Miyoo Mini production, they moved away from the small form factor.....it's sad really.
There is Problem with screens. They can't double down because there are no screens produced.
no, what they are doing is providing a slighlty larger version to the people who dont mind the larger size, while they wait for more screens
@@granday nah I think the general consensus around the community is that this device is out of production for good at this point. It’s been a while since they’ve been readily available, the random limited drops we were getting a while back was most likely the last of the stock they had available.

Great video! I ordered the transparent black today.
in my opinion there is no valid reason to buy the miyoo mini plus because there is now the rg35xx on the market which costs much less, has higher specifications and a much higher build quality.
(12$ for the screen, etc)
As for the build quality, how can you say the anbernic is better as you don't have both in hands ?
@@zespacedog first of all how can you say that i didn't have the miyoo mini? i had it for months, i installed the onion os and i resold it, now i have a rg353p and i love it. the miyoo chipset is a dual core with 2 cortex a7 and does not have a graphics card, the rg35xx has a quad core with 4 cortex a9 with gpu, in theory it could have even better performance than the miyoo, the , the stock os sucks ,the screen is mediocre, anbernic screens are much better, the plastics too.
